From the Pastor’s Desk I shall never forget the day I received the clinical diagnosis of Mul ple Sclerosis. I was only ordained six months and began to stumble and fall o en. The rumors began to fly and I was simply trying to get through the

changes that seemed to occur so rapidly. First a drop foot, then op c neuri s, other eye problems,

ngling in my hands, heavy legs, braces, canes, crutches, and within another six months I landed in a wheelchair. That was quite a bit to absorb for someone who was 28 and in the prime of life. However, I have learned to cope throughout the years by taking things as they are and relying on God to carry me through. You have o en heard me preach about one par cular episode that kept me in a hospital for nearly nine months. That exacerba on (flare-up) became so intense and seemed to ravage my en re body. The most trauma c moments occurred the night before Thanksgiving, 1992, at 9:48 PM, when I inhaled a breath of air, and then lost the ability to exhale. I remembered calling for the nurse with my quad bell (a devise to call a nurse, using one’s head instead of hands). The last thing I recalled was the respiratory therapy team racing into the room. I awoke to find myself ven lator dependent and then struggled for the next three months to learn to breathe all over again. We rarely think about breathing, which is one of the most basic and ordinary func ons of life, that is, unless we struggle with breath. It is such an ordinary func on, that we do it constantly and consistently throughout the day. Ironically, we become keenly aware of the necessity to breathe at moments when our breathing is compromised. Do you remember holding your breath under water and struggling to gasp the air? When we do such things, we are reminded of the importance of breath. And, as the Psalmist proclaimed if God takes away our breath, we will perish. I am certain that most people know someone who struggles with such issues. Here lies some food for thought. Did you no ce that the word “breath” is the exact meaning of the word spiritus—in La n. It even sounds like breathing. Ancient peoples directly associated

breathing with life; God was said to have brought life by bringing the “breath” of life to all creatures. There is probably no be er explana on of the Holy Spirit then the Breath of Life. We think of the Holy Spirit indwelling, but we might also speak of him as “inbreathing.” His presence, in us, is fundamental to our Chris an lives. Just as we have no real life without physical breathing, so we have no genuine Chris an life without the Holy “Breathing.” (For it is the Holy “Spiritus” which breathes within us a profound and immeasurable spiritual strength.) As we struggle to survive when we do not have air, we struggle even more when we a empt to live as disciples, without the presence of the Holy Spirit. I shall never forget the first me I was able to breathe on my own a er several months of being ven lator dependent. That day brought fulfillment beyond measure. The joy of that day is beyond descrip on. I liken it to the difference between the indwelling of the Holy Spirit in the Chris an life, and the absence of it. With the Holy Spirit, we can accomplish all things. Apart from the Holy Spirit we risk having our lives misled and separated from the love of God. This is the Spirit of Pentecost: “If you take away their breath, O God, they perish and return to their dust. When you send forth your Spirit they are created, and you renew the face of the earth.” As we are grateful for physical breath as the means of life, so are we immeasurably more grateful for the Holy Spirit—without whom we have spiritual death. St Paul speaks of God “in whom we live, we move, and have our being.” Today’s Psalm gives us a physiological experience of how essen al the breathing of the Holy Spirit is to renew the face of the earth. Remember, God breathed over the waters and the world was created. He breathed again over the Virgin Mary and the Christ child was conceived. Finally, he breathed tongues of fire over the Apostles and the Church was born. Imagine what could happen in you, if you are open to the breath of God. “Breathe on me on breath of God and give me the

strength to endure.” I started this ar cle talking about the early days

of my priesthood, shortly a er my ordina on. During an ordina on ceremony one of the first things that takes place, immediately following the Gospel, is the calling of the candidate. The Deacon proclaims in the church…Will those to be called to the Priestly Order come Forth. He then states the name of the candidate. When the name is called, the candidate stands, reverently bows to the bishop and says “Present”. On my ordina on day I thought the word present meant for the ordina on ceremony. However, through chronic illness, paralysis, numerous assignments in the diocese and my pastoral ministry at both St. Vincent Pallo and St. Andrew the Apostle I have come to realize that God is always calling us forth. God always wants us to be Present. And God con nues to call over and over again. Being present to the people of God as a priest has provided me a Joy that is beyond descrip on. I would not change it for anything in the world, despite the challenges in life I had to endure. And, I strongly encourage any young man to consider priesthood as a viable life op on. My voca on is a gi from God, and provides a grace beyond words. This weekend, the people of St. Andrew the Apostle should be extremely proud for helping another young man embrace his life as a priest. You will remember that Carlo Santa Teresa was assigned by the Bishop to St. Andrew the Apostle Parish so he could learn what a vibrant parish is like, to live with joyful priests, and to be mentored along his journey. You were a significant part of Carlo’s journey to the priesthood, and I am very proud to announce that Carlo will be ordained this weekend on Saturday, May 22nd. I hope you will remember Father Carlo (has a nice ring to it, don’t you think) in your prayers in a special way this weekend. Further, I hope you will consider joining us on June 6 at the 10 AM Mass as Father Carlo returns to St. Andrew to celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving. Please join us for this special Mass, and for a safe recep on a erward in the parish hall where you will be able to receive a newly ordained priest’s first blessing. With a loving and grateful heart, Msgr. Marucci

PS: On a separate note, there are not enough words to express my profound gra tude to everyone who made a pledge to the House of Charity. If you have not done so yet, I ask you to please make this commitment today. As disciples of Jesus each of us have a fundamental responsibility to care for the poor. Jesus said, “The poor you will have with you always…and whenever you wish…you can do good to them.” I know that everyone can make some gi to the House of Charity. Perhaps for some a sacrifice is required, but God always blesses the generous heart.

Finally, let me also thank those who have been faithful to their Catholic Strong Capital Campaign Pledges. As you can see, we are almost finished another project, namely, the replacement of the concrete around the church. You have made it possible for people using wheelchairs, walkers, crutches, and canes, (and high heels) to enter the church safely. Thank you, thank you, thank you. As we enter this current fiscal year, we aim to move to the second to the last project which is replacing the ligh ng inside the church. Our final project deals with an addi on onto the church, which I will address in the weeks ahead.

INTRODUCTORY RITES

Gree ng In the Name of the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit. Amen.

The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And with your spirit.

Peniten al Act I confess to almighty God and to you, my brothers and sisters, that I have greatly sinned, in my thoughts and in my words, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do, through my fault, through my fault, through my most grievous fault; therefore, I ask blessed Mary ever-Virgin, all the Angels and Saints, and you, my brothers and sisters, to pray for me to the Lord our God. Amen.

Lord, Have Mercy

Kyrie eleison Christe eleison Kyrie eleison

Gloria Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace to people of good will. We praise you, we bless you, we adore you, we glorify you, we give you thanks for your great glory, Lord God, heavenly King, O God,

almighty Father. Lord Jesus Christ, Only Bego en Son, Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us; you take away the sins of the world, receive our prayer; you are seated at the right hand of the Father, have mercy on us. For you alone are the Holy One, you alone are the Lord, you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ, with the Holy Spirit, in the glory of God the Father. Amen.

First Reading Acts 2:1-11 A reading from the Acts of the Apostles When the me for Pentecost was fulfilled, they were all in one place togethr. And suddenly there came from the sky a noise like a strong driving wind, and it filled the en re house in which they were. Then there appeared to them tongues as of fire, which parted and came to rest on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in different tongues, as the Spirit enabled them to proclaim. Now there were devout Jews from every na on under heaven staying in Jerusalem. At this sound, they gathered in a large crowd, but they were confused because each one heard them speaking in his own language. They were astounded, and in amazement they asked, “Are not all these people who are speaking Galileans? Then how does each of us hear them in his na ve language? We are Parthians, Medes, and Elamites, inhabitants of Mesopotamia, Judea and Cappadocia, Pontus and Asia, Phrygia and Pamphylia, Egypt and the districts of Libya near Cyrene, as well as travelers from Rome, both Jews and converts to Judaism, Cretans and Arabs, yet we hear them speaking in our own tongues of the mighty acts of God.” The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm 104:1, 24, 29-30, 31, 34 R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. or: R. Alleluia.

Bless the LORD, O my soul! O LORD, my God, you are great indeed! How manifold are your works, O LORD! the earth is full of your creatures. R.

Mass and Worship

R. Lord, send out your Spirit, and renew the face of the earth. or: R. Alleluia.

May the glory of the LORD endure forever; may the LORD be glad in his works! Pleasing to him be my theme; I will be glad in the LORD. R.

If you take away their breath, they perish and return to their dust. When you send forth your spirit, they are created, and you renew the face of the earth. R.

Second Reading 1 Cor 12:3b-7, 12-13 A reading from the first le er of Paul to the Corinthians

Brothers and sisters: No one can say, “Jesus is Lord,” except by the Holy Spirit. There are different kinds of spiritual gi s but the same Spirit; there are different forms of service but the same Lord; there are different workings but the same God who produces all of them in everyone. To each individual the manifesta on of the Spirit is given for some benefit. As a body is one though it has many parts, and all the parts of the body, though many, are one body, so also Christ. For in one Spirit we were all bap zed into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, slaves or free persons, and we were all given to drink of one Spirit. The word of the Lord. Thanks be to God. Gospel Acclamma on R. Alleluia, alleluia. Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. R. Alleluia, alleluia.

Gospel Jn 20:19-23

The Lord be with you. And with your spirit. A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Mark. Glory to You, O Lord.

On the evening of that first day of the week, when the doors were locked, where the disciples were, for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, “Peace be with you.”

When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his side. The disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” The Gospel of the Lord. Praise to you Lord Jesus Christ.

Homily

Profession of Faith I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Bego en Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, bego en, not made, consubstan al with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salva on he came down from heaven, and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. For our sake he was crucified under Pon us Pilate, he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church. I confess one Bap sm for the forgiveness of sins and I look forward to the resurrec on of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen.

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

Pray, brethren, that our sacrifice… May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church. Amen.

6

The Lord's Prayer Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us: and lead us not into tempta on, but deliver us from evil.

Deliver us, Lord… For the kingdom, the power and the glory are yours now and forever. Amen.

Lamb of God Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world, have mercy on us. (repeat) Lamb of God you take away the sins of the world, grant us peace.

Communion Behold the Lamb of God... All: Lord, I am not worthy that you should enter under my roof, But only say the word and my soul shall be healed.

CONCLUDING RITES AND FINAL BLESSING Sending Hymn

Mass and Worship

P S . J O dearest St. Joseph, I consecrate myself to thy honor and give myself to thee, that thou mayest always be my father, my protector, and my guide in the way of salva on. Obtain for me a great purity of heart and a fervent love of the interior life. A er thine example, may I do all my ac ons for the greater glory of God, in union with the Divine Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary! And do thou, O Blessed St. Joseph, pray for me that I may share in the peace and joy of thy holy death. Amen.

Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.
