Task Locate at least 6 items at home and identify what the item is, where you found it, what it is used for, what its active ingredient(s) are, and if possible, the chemical formulae of the compound in the active ingredient(s)and the names of the elements in the compound. Please present your findings in a table or similar and it would be great if you could include a photograph of each of the items. You may need to use the internet to research some ingredients. Also please ensure that you acknowledge all sources used by including a bibliography. You may email your report to me at [email protected] . Don’t forget to include your name on your report!! Task

Locate at least 6 items at home and identify what the item is, where you found it, what it is used for, what its active ingredient(s) are, and if possible, the chemical formulae of the compound in the active ingredient(s)and the names of the elements in the compound.

Please present your findings in a table or similar and it would be great if you could include a photograph of each of the items.

You may need to use the internet to research some ingredients. Also please ensure that you acknowledge all sources used by including a bibliography.

A bibliography is list of information sources you have found useful while preparing to write an assignment. There are many ways of setting out a bibliography. At Don, we suggest the style shown below. It is important that you are consistent in your bibliographic method. As a general rule, if an item does not appear to have a known author, put the title of the publication (i.e. the book, magazine, CD-ROM etc.) first.

1. What to include when referencing books The name of the author – surname first Year of publication Title of book – underlined Place of publication.

Example: Howitt, Bernie (1994). Rock through history, Melbourne: Longman Cheshire.

2. Referencing articles in encyclopedias Title of encyclopedia - underlined Year of publication, or edition Title of article - in quotation marks Volume number of encyclopedia Place of publication Publisher

Example: World Book Encyclopedia. (1992). “Dancing”, Vol.5, Chicago: World Book Inc.

3. Referencing articles from a CD-ROM Name of author - surname first (if known) Year of publication Title of the article - in quotation marks Name of the CD-ROM - underlined. Publication information.

Example: Kohn, Hans (1993). “Nationalism”, Microsoft Encarta, Microsoft Corporation.

4. Referencing an Internet site Name of author - surname first Date the document was created or last modified. If no date is given, write n.d./

followed by the year the document was downloaded Title of the document - in quotation marks Type of document - in square brackets URL - underlined You may also need to add the date you visited the site – in brackets, and in the form

(visited Year, Month Date)
