Queen Charlotte Yacht ClubAnother step closerThe last weekend in January was reason for both celebration and reliving happy memories. It was the last Saturday racing with the briefing held in the old boatshed.

Racing was outside with a stiff 15 to 20 knots northerly breeze. Beautiful conditions made for great racing except staying dry was not an option. The fleet of Optimists, Topaz, Open Skiffs, Splash, 420, Laser, Paper Tiger, Finn and a Nacra sailed 3 races before returning to Shelly Beach. After racing boats were moved into the new boatshed, which is part of the new club, still under construction.

On Sunday QCYC volunteers turned up to dismantle the old boatshed. It will be a while longer before the New QCYC water sport facility is fully operational, but it will be worth it and it will enhance all the great things already happening in Picton.

It has been a busy month for QCYC sailors. Several have attended regatta’s and National events all over the country. With a few more to come. From February 1 to 5 QCYC will host the Zephyr Nationals. A few weeks after that around 175 sailors will descend on Picton to take part in the 2020 Interislander Optimist and Port Marlborough Starling Champs at QCYC. QCYC sailors will also attend several regattas in March and April.

Thank you all for your continuous support and see you soon at Shelley Beach.

Picton LibraryBy Helen Devlin

After a busy summer holiday season the library is almost back to normal. I hope you are enjoying this lovely summer heat. The Library is an especially cool place to visit at this time of year.

The Children’s Summer Reading programme finished last week. This programme is always a popular way to encourage reading for children through the long school holiday break. It is also great fun for younger readers and librarians alike. Around 40 local children completed the reading programme this year, and through the summer we have had 270 attend our various children’s programmes.

Most of our regular Library programming has recommenced: Housebound Service has regular deliveries to registered users every 3 weeksBook Chat 2nd Wednesday of the month 10.30am looks at our new booksAfter School Fun Wednesdays 3.30pm from February 12Under 5’s Story and Craft alternate Fridays 10.30am starts 14 February Tasty Times restarts second term – (considerable interest in this already) Many of the local groups that meet regularly at the Library have also recommenced. Look for details on our Community Noticeboard.

Wheelie bins on the moveThe red and yellow litter bins located in Blenheim and Picton will soon be moved to some of Marlborough’s rural towns.

Solid Waste Manager Alec McNeil says the wheelie bins have been trialled in Blenheim and Picton for the past 18 months as part of the national ‘Litter Less Recycle More’ project.

“With only six months left until the trial concludes, we want to find out whether there is a need for the bins in some of our smaller towns,” Alec said.

The wheelie bins will be on the move from Monday 3 February. Servicing of the remaining litter bins for Picton and Blenheim will be adjusted to take account of the reduction in bins.

When the trial concludes in June, Council will review how effective the system has been and whether it should be continued.

Had a crash or near miss? Tell us about itHave you had a near miss when you’re out cycling or walking? If you have, Council wants to know about it.

In an effort to improve road safety, our road safety team is urging cyclists and pedestrians to report crashes or near misses.

Regular cycle commuter Luke Davies cycles to and from town for work every day to save money, keep fit and reduce his impact on the environment.

While most motorists appear to be aware of cyclists and share the road according to the road code, Luke has had several “scary” close shaves and one crash in which he was “lucky” to escape with only cuts and bruising and minor damage to his bike.

Council Road Safety Coordinator Robyn Blackburn says all near misses have the potential to be fatal.

“We want more people using active transport to get to school and work, but they need to feel safe doing so.

“To ensure we have all of the information we are urging people to report any issues to Council so we can build a solid case when advocating to improve any conflict points at intersections, or simply getting across the road.“

Tell us about your near misses at: https://bit.ly/mdcnearmissform or go to our website www.marlborough.govt.nz and search for ‘Near Miss.’
