Cruise Ship Arrivals 2020P.S.A 16th March 2020Kia ora koutou

Over the weekend the Prime Minister announced further border controls for entry to NZ, including a temporary ban on cruise ships entering NZ waters.

This morning shipping agents have confirmed that all cruise bookings to Picton have been cancelled for the rest of this season.

All other international shipping (such as log ships) are subject to additional heightened border security measures. These measures include enhanced pre-arrival procedures and quarantine provisions. There have been no issues with any crew or vessel to date and we are constantly monitoring this.

We have been working with the Ministry of Health, Maritime NZ, Nelson Marlborough DHB, MDC and customers for some time, and will continue to ensure border controls are appropriate and the risk of spread of COVID-19 is minimised. Please be assured our priority is the health and well-being of our staff, customers and community.

We will be updating our website as quickly as possible with any changes and I encourage you to keep up to date with the Ministry of Health’s website.

Picton Historical Society

The CarnaticBy Alison Hinkley

The Carnatic was an 871 ton Clipper ship that made three voyages to New Zealand.

In 1875 she was the only immigrant ship to sail directly from London to Picton arriving on the 10th Jan 1875. She had 297 immigrants aboard.

One of the sailors summed up the voyage saying 'it had been a particularly fine one! - two deaths, one birth and no rows!'

It had a very large distinctive figurehead, said to be in the likeness of Queen Victoria. When Carnatic left Picton she was minus six sailors who had deserted. On this voyage she had no cargo as the Merchants were unsure whether she would come into Picton Harbour. However after the Captain speaking very highly of the capability of the Port and the anticipation of the railway being completed, he felt it would become a

favourite place for skippers, who would be glad to load in such a situation.

Sad to say in 1883 she suffered her demise and foundered in a heavy gale off Cape of Good Hope with all crew saved by another ship.

Work is underway at the Waikawa Stream mouth to improve its flood capacity and help protect nearby housing from flooding. The stream is a steep gravel bed river that naturally deposits gravel and silt into the sea.

The tides have provided favourable conditions for the work to get underway this week.

The extracted shingle will provide replenishment for nearby beaches, which will benefit local

bird life and means there is no overall loss of natural habitat. The shingle will also be used for the nearby Waikawa marina extension.

The Council is working closely with Port Marlborough, Te Atiawa and the local community, who have been supportive of the project. The work is expected to wrap up in early April.

If you have any questions, please contact David Aires, Rivers Operations Engineer on 03 520 7400.

Marlborough District CouncilWaikawa flood prevention work starts

Most boaties launching at the Picton and Havelock boat ramps this summer seemed to have safety at the top of their minds.

A recent Summer Safe Boating campaign run by the Marlborough District Council Harbours Team found approximately 90 percent of people heading out the Sounds this summer were wearing lifejackets – including their four legged friends.

Harbour Protection Officer, Jason Moore, says this was a great result.

“Our team spent time this summer at both the Picton

and Havelock boat ramps conducting lifejacket checks and reminding skippers of the importance of wearing a life jacket. Statistics show that each year up to two-thirds of recreational boaties who drown in our waters might have been saved if they had been wearing an appropriate life jackets.

“The fact that most people were wearing lifejackets showed they were generally well prepared,” Jason said.

The campaign also promoted other safety messages, like reminding skippers to carry at least two waterproof ways of calling for help, check the

marine weather forecast, and abide by the speed limit of 5 knots or less within 200m of the shore.

As part of the campaign the Harbours team gave away two children’s life jackets to age group winners of a colouring competition. Felix Ogilvy 7 years old (pictured right) and Tui Ogilvy 5 years old (pictured far right), both from Blenheim were the lucky recipients. Marlborough Sounds Marinas also gave away an annual lunching pass.
