Most o us would have heardo those unbelievable instanceso major brands messing upcommunication in dierentcountries around the world. akeor instance when Kentucky FriedChicken entered the Chinesemarket, to their horror theydiscovered that their slogan "ngerlickin' good" meant "eat yourngers o ! Or when Pepsi enteredthe Chinese market a ew yearsago, the translation o their slogan

"Pepsi Brings you back to Lie"turned out to be a little more literalthan they intended. In Chinese, theslogan meant, "Pepsi Brings YourAncestors Back rom the Grave"All these cross cultural gaescommitted by major brandsworldwide were dealt within detail by Proessor Atulandon, ormer Director and

Senior Proessor at MICA.His session was quite an eye-opener to the various culturalnuances and intricaciesthat need to be taken intoconsideration when brandsdecide to communicate with aglobal audience. Te studentsanalyzed amous ad campaignsthat had great impactworldwide such as Nike,United Colours o Benetton,HSBC amongst others. One important point madeby PA was that there are twokinds o advertisement - thosethat win awards and thosethat actually help sell theproduct. PAs sessions wereextremely inormative andgave us a resh perspectiveon branding and marketing.

Memories shared to be told in posterity:beautiul, happy and bright. Tere were asmany as nine activities, each o them being agroup task with a time-limit and a markingmatrix. Te entire batch was divided into twogroups. Each new activity saw a new leader.Te entire exercise saw the emergence o somebrilliant tactics and ideas in completing tasks.Tis spanned over two days. Te kaleidoscopeo memories was the camaraderie, the coolbreeze, the unication, the laughter, the

green trees, the singing, the sleepless sky, thedancing, the unspoken whisper, the untoucheddew - memories old and new, all celebratingthe spirit o the times, small, big and inbetween, that they lived together or now andorever at that magical place called SIMC- B.

Te dawning o the new millennium paved way tomany great inventions but the one thing that tookthe world by storm was perhaps the emergence oDigital Media. A new platorm which not only isopening new avenues but is also bringing the peopleo the world closer to each other, now one wouldnteven start to imagine in how many ways. SocialNetworking was probably the ultimatebreakthrough in the digital space during the pastdecade with popular websites like Facebook andwitter taking the lead. You know that theres boundto be big business involved when theres a reshindustry out there which has the potential oattracting sellers, consumers and marketers all

on to a single podium. Tats the place to be andmake your voice heard.90% o internet riendlycitizens around the globe use online channels tocompare and nd the best prices o a product beorepurchasing it. Tis is what Branding is comingdown to, Dierentiation - as in the actual sense,no other medium oers the power to analyse andeducate yoursel about the dierences betweencompeting brands as much asthe online consortium does. So, when was the last time you walked into a Malland received a Bluetooth message on your mobile?Mobile media is another such channel which waslef underutilized during the past two years. Oncontrary, mobile media has attracted manyyoungsters to adapt to the new platorm as thetech savvy youth nd it to be a value added servicewhich is being oered by companies. It would beinteresting to know that a vast majority opeople who receive such communication are likely to

entertain these messages by accepting them asmost o them oer inormation or ree. With newage sofware being developed or smartphones likeOxicash, users now have more powergiven to them, right at their ngertips. So much or competition on the digital ront -Microsof launched its much publicised searchengine Bing in 2009 and hoped to bring in a bigduel with Google, but did you ever realize that youcan be taken to another search engine with helpo one? ry Googling Bing or try to search orGoogle on Excite and so on, its as simple as thatto switch. Ten whats the scope o competition onsuch a platorm one might wonder, well virtually

all o them oer the same services, none greater, none lesser and surprisingly all o it seems to goback to one single channel the World Wide Web.Te real competition exists in the race to cast moreimpressions on as many users as possible.Te last decade saw a great uprising o the digitalera but ladies and gentlemen, you havent seenanything yet. Expect bigger things rom thisplatorm in the coming years as both marketers andconsumers slowly start realizing its potential andstart shifing ocus to this new side o the world.

    AppreciationMail or PRADimes:

I am very impressedwith the contents ofthe News letter andalso the happeningsat SIMC Bangalore.Wish I was there towitness theseinteresting events.

Buzz is about the excitement around brands asseen rom the point o view o the consumers. Inother words, it is the story o brands that the usersenjoy talking about. Just as conversation ebbs andows, so does interest in a brand. Facebbok topsthe list in this category ollowed by Blackberry andata Docomo. Te most striking aspect o this year'spoll is the number o new brands that have enteredthe list - and that too at the very top. In act, ouro the ve top brands weren't even in the 2010shortlist: BlackBerry, ata Docomo, Volkswagen andMicromax. Te other trend is t he domination o theupper echelons by brands rom the mobile space.Te report clearly shows that brands like Facebookand Blackeberry are here to stay and wouldsurely take the majority o the share o attentionas well as the share o wallet in days to come.
