“It is not the strongest or the most intelligent who will survive but those who can best manage change.”

― Leon C. Megginson

It is amazing what we can learn about ourselves when we are forced out of doing things the “usual way” or are deprived of what we are used to always having. The quote above hits it

right on the head… When we are faced with changing our habits out of necessity, we have two choices – roll with the punches or submit to the void. But even just rolling with the punches is not an assurance – the term “weathering the storm” does not merely mean that we survived, but that we have been changed (weathered) by it as well and that change is what will help keep us from getting tossed again when it returns.

I first, and best, learned this when I was unemployed for a few months in 2010. Heading into that unknown was super stressful and the temptation to despair was overwhelming: there was no way we were going to be able to pay the bills, how are we going to survive without that income? I will never get a job like that again; we are headed to bankruptcy for sure.

The waves seemed unsurmountable.

What was required to get through it was to look at things in a completely different light. The plans I had made before could not remain the same. Goals had to change and ways of approaching something as simple as dinner that night required a fresh way of looking at things.

In the end, instead of bankruptcy there grew new habits and ways of looking at things that have made us even stronger during the times of plenty, because now, instead of thinking the plenty could never end, we expect and plan that it will. We learned to live more simply, and instead of setting our sights on the five minutes ahead of us, we started to take the long view - we learned to embrace the changes as a positive and began to see where good can grow where only a desert seemed to exist before.

A sailor setting out to sea who navigates by only looking 100 feet ahead is bound to end up going in circles, lost at sea. One who’s sights are set on a distant star will be more likely to reach the destination. This does not mean that the waves and the wind will not kick up, nor does it mean that the leading star will fall out of sight at times, but when those temporary roadblocks become the focus, they will consume us.

Peter asks Jesus to call him out onto the water, and for as long as his sights are set on Jesus, he is able to walk on it. But the moment he looks at the wind and the waves, he loses faith, loses sight, and the sea overwhelms him.

Change is all around us now, and for some of us that change is profound; from the world, to our country, our job to our parish and families, the way of doing things before has been pushed aside and needs to be transformed. Only by keeping our sights on the long game, by keeping our sights on Jesus and not the storm, will we be able to push through what the world is throwing at us and by embracing the positive that change can bring, be all the better on the other side for it.

PRINCE OF PEACE SCHEDULE FOR THIS WEEK

Next weekend, August 15-16, with our normal schedule:

Weekday Mass August 10 – August 14 at 8:00am - WITH RESERVATION SYSTEM

Reconciliation is currently by appointment

Please call the parish office & leave a message or email Fr. John at [email protected] or Fr. Gerald at [email protected] to make an appointment.

The Cardinal recognizes that many parishioners are concerned about their health, and may be reluctant

to gather for Mass, so, the dispensation from attending Mass is still in effect. Since parishioners are still dispensed from coming to Mass, we will continue to record the Sunday Mass and have it available on our website.

We need to clean the church between Masses, so, we ask that parishioners exit the church building, to the parking lot, immediately after Mass so that this can be done.

We are using an online reservation system to monitor the number of individuals we can safely have in the church and maintain safe social distancing. If you are unable to access the reservation site by computer or cell phone, you can call the parish office and we will manually enter you into a time slot.

This sign up will be used for Masses AND Eucharistic Adoration. We are asking everyone to use the reservation system which is available from the front page of our website (www.princeofpeacelv.org).

If individuals come without a reservation it may be necessary to turn parishioners away if the church gets too full. I ask that you please understand the situation and please do not be offended if this happens. Again, I want to thank everyone for their patience and understanding.

Thank you for your cooperation with these new protocols we must follow. It has been wonderful to see everyone again. We look forward to when all of us can join together around the Lord’s table. Father Gerald, your parish staff and volunteer team

Special Intention for the week of August 10, 2020

That setting aside our very selves we may learn to be neighbors to those

who find themselves on the margins of human life and society.

Come, help us pray.

Have You Thought About RCIA?

Have you thought about becoming a Catholic? Are you a Catholic who has never moved beyond the Sacrament of Baptism? Do you know others who have mentioned an interest in learning about the Catholic religion, those never baptized or baptized in a different Christian religion? Or, do you know someone who was baptized Catholic but never received further instruction to receive First Communion and Confirmation? RCIA is here for all of you!

This year’s RCIA (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) formation group is scheduled to begin meeting on September 8, 2020 (this date is like all other dates at this time, likely to be changed since it is dependent on our ability to get together safely). Once you have made contact as listed below, we will keep you informed on our status and plans.

Meeting on Tuesday evenings at 7:30 p.m. until about 9:00 p.m., people who meet the conditions mentioned in the questions above come together to learn about the Catholic religion in an adult learning environment. The class format allows and promotes interaction between the presenter and the participants, and asking questions is strongly encouraged.

No commitment to become a member of the Catholic faith is required of those who attend until well into the process. All are welcome to come and see what the RCIA is all about and to join the group’s leader, Deacon Tim Leonard, on this journey of faith discernment. Please contact Deacon Tim at (847) 265-0686 or email [email protected] if you have an interest in exploring the Catholic faith or if you would like additional information. He’s waiting to hear from YOU!

“He said, ‘Come.’ Peter got out of the boat and began to walk on the water toward Jesus.” (Matthew 14:29)

When you hear Jesus calling, do you respond immediately and trust that He knows what He’s doing? If so, you are walking on water! When we say “yes” to Jesus, we feel the power of His presence in our lives. We can feel the freedom it gives us! Listen to how Jesus is calling you to live the extraordinary life He has intended for you.

What Do I do with My Church Donations since we are not Passing the Basket?

Please consider signing up for Electronic Giving for your Sunday contributions. You can sign up for a regular giving schedule through Give Central (the “Donate Now” button on our parish website) or fill out an “Electronic Giving” form and return it to the church. A form an be found on our website or can be mailed/emailed to you.

Why should I sign up for Electronic Giving?

You don’t have to worry about remembering your church envelope when you come to Mass. Or worry about mailing your donation to the church. Couldn’t we all use one less thing to think about/remember?

You can give from your checking/savings account OR with a credit card (how many earn rewards with their card?) You are able to support your parish even when you are unable to attend Mass. It’s a “greener” option - less envelopes = less paper, less postage, less waste. YOU decide how much, how often & when the contribution is given. Instead of a monthly envelope packet you receive a quarterly packet, which contains envelopes for any special

collections (i.e. St. Vincent de Paul, Mother’s Day, Father’s Day, etc.). OR you can opt for no envelopes at all.

If you have questions, please call the parish office (847-356-7915) or email our Business Manager, Barb Ruhl, at [email protected]. Thank you!

A Prayer for Vocations:

Heavenly Father, Your divine Son taught us to pray to the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into His vineyard.

We earnestly beg You to bless our Archdiocese and our world with many priests and religious men and women

who will love You fervently, and gladly and courageously spend their lives in service to Your Son’s Church under

the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We pray that their lives may be always centered on our Eucharistic Lord; that

they be always faithful to the Holy Father; and that they may be devoted sons and daughters of Mary, our

Mother, in making You known and loved; and that all may attain Heaven. Bless our families and our children and

choose from our homes those whom You desire for this holy work. We ask this in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Please inform the parish office of any additions to your family, changes in member status or address changes. All Catholic adults, 18 years old and no longer in school, who live within the parish area should register in their own name. Active and supporting membership includes offering one’s time, talent and treasure to assist in promoting the Gospel and the mission of Prince of Peace Parish. Please help us maintain our parish records by registering or

advising us of changes as soon as possible. Welcome to Prince of Peace! We are glad you are here!

Prince of Peace staff and the Communications Ministry frequently videotape or photograph participants enjoying programs, Masses and other events at our facility. These photographs are taken for use in parish publications, flyers, our website, brochures and future materials. All photos and videos taken on Prince of Peace property are for parish use and become the sole property of the parish. If you or a member of your family does not wish to be photographed, please contact the parish office.
