like expression of infinite sweetness. The Prince of Peace is twelve inches long and weighsover three pounds. It is yours for just $129 $99 (ship-

ping and handling included). Satisfaction guar-anteed. The tasseled gold damask pillow is free!

Prince of Peace

The Divine example is that of the Good Shep-herd who goes after the stray sheep to bring it

back to the fold. Another moving example is SaintMonica, mother of Saint Augustine. She never en-dorsed her son’s impure lifestyle and heretical be-liefs, but she also never stopped praying andworking towards his conversion. “A mother’s tears”eventually did convert him and he became one ofthe greatest Catholic luminaries of all time.

True compassion is an effect of charity.1 How-ever, the object of this virtue is God, whose love ex-tends to creatures.2 Hence the virtue of compassionseeks to bring God to the one who suffers and make

him participate in God’s infinite love. Saint Augus-tine expresses this very beautifully:

“Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.” Now,you love yourself suitably when you love God bet-ter than yourself. What, then, you aim at in your-self you must aim at in your neighbor, namely, that he may love God with a perfect affection.3

Thus, while commiserating with another’s suf-ferings, love of neighbor must always be for thelove of God.

From a Catholic and rational standpoint, com-passion is only true when it aims at the real good ofone’s neighbor. This good consists, above all, in hiseternal salvation but also encompasses alleviatinghis temporal sufferings. To assist him to remain invice and sin out of a misguided pity for his temporalsufferings is to ignore his spiritual welfare and sal-vation. There can be no greater cruelty. n

TheTFP’s words and efforts have always been faithfully atthe service of Christian civilization. The first TFP wasfounded in Brazil by the famous intellectual andCatholic leader Prof. Plinio Corrêa de Oliveira in 1960.His work inspired the formation of other autonomousTFP sister organizations across the globe, thusconstituting the world’s largest anticommunist andantisocialist network of Catholic inspiration.

Memberships Surge inSocialist Organization;“Clueless” MillennialsJoin in DrovesThe Democratic Socialistsof America proudly an-nounced that it now has25,000 dues-paying mem-bers, making it the largest socialist organization inthe country since World War II. The surge in mem-bership was attributed to supporters of Sen. BernieSanders joining the organization. A Harvard Uni-versity study found that 51% of Americans ages 18through 29 no longer say they support capitalism. But according to Jay Richards, executive editor ofThe Stream, most millennials are “clueless” aboutsocialism and communism. He attributes biasedmedia, which glorifies communism, and fuzzythinking, which results in a lack of knowledgeabout socialism, as possible culprits.

Obama-era Rulings Negated by TrumpAdministrationPresident Donald Trump abruptly announced that“transgender” people can no longer serve in theU.S. military in any capacity. The policy shift cameafter all of the armed services’ commanders-in-chief requested a 6-month delay before imple-menting former president Obama’s policy thatwould have allowed “transgender” people to enlistin the military. Meanwhile, the Wall Street Journalreported that President Trump is about to issue anexecutive order that would eliminate the Healthand Human Services (HHS) mandate that all em-ployers pay for abortifacients, sterilization andcontraception insurance. The order would rescindthe HHS mandate that is considered to be themost offensive part of Obamacare.

Americans Spend over $69 BillionAnnually on PetsAccording to the American Pet Products Associa-

tion (APPA), Americans’ obsession over theirpets has been skyrocketing with estimates of

spending up to $69 billion this year alone.$28.3 billion goes to the pet food industry, which offers “clean eating” options that in-clude costly premium food products.

Meanwhile, a 2013 research paper reportedthat: “pets outnumber children four to one in

the United States. The trend of pet ownershiphas been increasing: between 2002 and 2012, theU.S. pet population grew faster than the humanpopulation (United States Department of Agricul-ture, 2013).” If children can be substituted by pets,

it may be that the increased demand for pets is atleast partly attributable to the legalization of abor-tion in the United States.

Europe Is in a Crisis of “Childlessness”Although the industrialized world as a whole hasbeen facing a demographic challenge for quite sometime, termed a “birth dearth,” Europe’s childlessnesshas been rising to extreme proportions. A report onCNS News revealed that European governmentshave been enticing women with incentives such asmoney, cars, refrigerators and other prizes just to

have children, but with no success. Some pointedout that the examples of most of the European lead-ers who are childless themselves is a stark illustra-tion of “Europe’s democratic suicide.” Leaders ofEurope’s largest economies (Germany, Great Britain,France and Italy) as well as several smaller nationshave no children of their own.

Czech Republic Tells its Citizens “You can Now Shoot Terrorists on Sight”A new law took effect in the Czech Republic thatgives its citizens the right to carry guns and shootterrorists on sight. 139 out of 168 deputies in theirlegislature voted in favor of the amendment. Thenew law means that approximately 360,000 licensedgun owners in the Czech Republic are allowed tocarry their weapons in public and use them in caseof a public order emergency, such as terrorism. In-terior Minister Milan Chovanec said, “we do notwant to disarm our own people at a time when thesecurity situation is deteriorating.” The Czech Re-public has not seen any attacks in years and isranked the sixth safest country in the world.

In Brief

Page 5: Prince of Peace - tfp. · PDF fileForeign Correspondents: Charles E. Schaffer, Austria; José Carlos Sepulveda, Brazil; Philip Moran, United ... Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church,

One of our modern novels could present thefollowing situation: The heroine, let’s call her“Gina,” is an up-to-date woman. Very rich

and provided with a husband who thoroughly spoilsher, she has dogs, cats, a parrot, and a monkey, butno children. This spoiled existence depresses herand she doesn’t even know why.

Among her friends are mothers with childrenwho courageously use their modest resources torear a family. Often when an illness breaksout among the children, a friend of thefamily will take two or three of theothers for the time. To cure Gina ofher depressed spirits, her friendJamie persuades her to take careof a young boy whose brothersand sisters have the chickenpox.

Gina is bewildered; sheknows perfectly well how tocare for a monkey or a parrot, but she finds herself embar-rassed before this little boy whohas already judged her severelyfrom the height of his four years.“How much is lacking in her training! She knows how to smoke,” he says to him-self sadly, “but she can’t button my shirt.” He didnot complain nor did he reproach her; but on seeingher so clumsy, he thought she had much to learn tobecome a woman like his mamma.

Happily there are other kinds of women. Amother of a family and a brilliant author was askedto write for a series entitled The Up-to-DateWoman. She writes, “How shall I ever write this lit-tle book? There are no up-to-date mothers. Thereare only Mammas.” And with charming dash cou-pled with irresistible conviction she gave youngwives this advice:

“Little Lady… Do not listen to those frustratedwomen or those soured unmarried girls, or thoseJezebels who have nothing of the matron aboutthem but their age and have no real experience; donot let them draw you out of the right way. Be con-vinced, that the joy which babies bring is inex-

pressible and makes up for all the torment and fa-tigue of bearing them. Be certain that the sight ofthat plump, smooth little body; of those dimpledhands and feet, both like pink silk yet providedwith sharp nails; of that darling little mouth withits toothless smile, so simple and so trustful thatthe bright look, so marvelously pure, the softcheeks, the silky hair, the utter quiet abandonmentof this little being who issued forth from us floods

our soul with an intense and intimate ecstasysuch as I have never known before.”

If only the up-to-date womanwould be a mother for the future.

After the dark hours of the war,new life must be born. There willbe lives only if there are mothers, mothers who respond to theiressential and divine vocation.Even if there were not this mo-tive of special need, eternal rea-

sons still have force—the law offecundity and the law of chastity.

Although it is permissible for mar-ried persons to abstain from the con-

jugal act or to perform it only whenthere is the least possibility of conception

provided their reasons are not selfish; if they doperform the marital act they may do nothing to pre-vent the generation of a life which is in the plan ofGod. That is clear.

Give me, O my God, the grace through respectfor You and for Your work, always to have a devo-tion to and a respect for life; grant that I may neversully my own existence by any criminal attemptupon new life. Grant me also the grace to be inYour Hands a not too unworthy instrument of Yourcreative power. Let me be “up-to-date” wheneverit is a question of enrolling a new name in the Bookof Life. n

We have reached a point in ournation’s history where the de-bate is becoming ever more vi-

olent and uncivil. This can be seen in thestatue wars now raging after the rally inCharlottesville. The event served as anexample of the growing frustration withthe political process that many claim isirremediably broken.

Indeed, it is hard to get things done.Worse, things are done outside the normal

processes and even the rule of law. Hence, statues are defaced by vandals or removedat night without regard for the views of thepublic. Protests have turned violent. Fan-ning the fires, the media frame the issuesso as to favor a liberal narrative andagenda. People become frustrated andwant quick solutions.

And that is the problem. These aretimes of frenetic intemperance, manypeople no longer want to make the im-mense effort to change things. Whetherit be politics or consumer goods, peoplewant everything now, quickly and with-out complications.

The Hurricane Men AppearThese circumstances prepare for thecoming of the “hurricane men.”

Throughout history, there have al-ways been hurricane men. The expres-sion is used here figuratively to meanany man, woman, group or movementthat in a time of crisis appears like a hur-ricane. These figures or movements gooutside the political process and breakthe rules to push their agenda.

Not all such figures have been bad peo-ple. Some merely disrupt and don’t over-throw their societies. At times, societiesbenefit from abrupt changes but notwithout damaging society in some way.

Like hurricanes, these people vary in theirdegree of intensity, thus differing as to theextent of the devastation they cause.

Harming Society by Their ActionsHowever, most hurricane men havebeen revolutionaries of the left that endup harming society much like hurri-canes do in the places where they land.

The names of these harmful figuresare legion—Robespierre, Lenin, Hitler,

Mao, Che, Castro and countless others. The sixties introduced a generation ofhurricane people with the sexual revo-lution. Today’s mass society tends tocreate hurricane movements (like An-tifa and Black Lives Matter) that pro-duce much the same effect.

Steamrolling over Laws and SentimentsWhat characterizes a hurricane man ishis willingness to go outside customsand laws. With no principles to bog himdown, he proposes quick solutions andpithy slogans to overcome the frustra-tions of a society in crisis.

In the statue war, two hurricanemovements clash. The first movement isthe gaggle of Antifa-type leftists, who vi-olently attack the second movementmade up of the extremists of the so-calledalt-right. When these leftists steamrollover laws and public sentiments, theother side is tempted to slug right back.

Times become dangerous when thishappens. The debate ceases tobe civil or even rational. All sides arecommitted toanarchy. Thevictory belongsto the side that

presents the better narrative or wields theheavier fist.

The Clash of Hurricane MenLeading to StrifeAnd that is what has happened in thestatue wars. The media have framed thecontroversy to the left’s advantage. Thehurricane men of the left have under-mined the rule of law. Cowardly politi-cians call for society to give in to the leftistnarrative. The powerful captains of in-dustry cower in fear of displeasing politi-cally-correct diktats of the hurricane men.

Rather than craft a counter-narra-tive to win the war for public opinion, many statue defenders find it muchsimpler to rely upon their own hurri-cane men, which serves only to create amore intense hurricane. This is not theclassic clash of right versus left, butrather a recipe for anarchy. No one re-spects the rules or principles anymore. This is the stuff of civil strife thatthreatens the nation.

* * *What is missing today are those who

defy the culture and make the effort toframe the debate in defense of order andhistory. What is needed are not hurri-cane men, but calm representative fig-ures spread throughout society, who bytheir example and integrity can lead anation through the storm and accom-plish great things.

In times of crisis, hurricane men ap-pear. However, the same crisis can alsocall forth principled and coura-geous figures who will opposethe hurricane men. The timehas come for many who nowwatch to step up to the plate.

As in times of natural dis-aster, all Americans urgentlyneed to call upon God’s helpto save the nation fromdevastation. n

Asatanic offensive is taking place in America. It can be seen not only in large cities and lib-eral strongholds, but in small communities

like Belle Plaine, Minnesota. This city served as the stage for a highly symbolic

sequence of events. In April, officials there ap-proved plans for a satanic monument to be erectedin a free speech area of the town’s Veterans Memo-rial Park. The effort was a project of the SatanicTemple, based in Salem, Massachusetts, and a localreligious freedom group. The sponsors designed, fundraised and built a symbol-laden monumentwhich was to have been the first satanic monumenton public property in United States history.

The move was met with significant oppositionby townspeople and concerned citizens all acrossthe nation. Over 25,000 people signed one petitionasking for its rejection. A recent protest attractednearly 300 people to the site. The vigorous oppo-sition led the City Council to vote on July 17 toabolish the park’s free speech zone. The Satanists’move was defeated.

Not a Case of Religious LibertyWhat carried the day was protesting.

Most of these fights across America are beingpresented as simple cases of religious freedom. InBelle Plaine, the Satanists claimed that since thepark had a much-beloved monument of a soldierpraying over a grave with a cross, the alien satanicmonument should enjoy an equal right to be pres-ent in the free speech zone.

However, the real issue in this controversy goesfar beyond religious freedom or freedom of ex-pression. It is best not to waste time arguing aboutthese freedom issues since it allows the enemy tochoose the battlefield. Religious freedom is onlybeing used as a pretext for Satanists to obtain theirgoal. And their real goal is much more sinister thanthe equal placement of a monument.

Looking for Acceptance of the UnacceptableThe real issue is acceptance of the devil.

The real issue is all about the mainstreaming ofSatanism in America. Much as the same-sex “mar-riage” debate was about acceptance of the homo-sexual lifestyle, so also satanic groups seek socialacceptance.

Indeed, this is what the Satanists themselvesdeclare. For them, it has nothing to do with reli-gious practices. Many of them even allege theyhave none. They simply want to mainstream Sa-tanism so that it will be viewed as normal.

Indeed, the devil is the last great victim of dis-crimination in America. He represents all that is evil, hideous and macabre. As long as the devil is rejectedin the minds of people anywhere, there remainssome objective distinction between good and evil.

From time immemorial,Satan has been abhorred. There has always been a bar-rier of horror that separateshim from mankind. Satanicgroups now want to teardown this last barrier ofmoral health to overwhelmthe crumbling ramparts ofthe moral order.

The Satanic OffensiveThis explains the new Satanicoffensive. The target is the

moral order, especially as upheld by Christian civ-ilization. The fight is not new in itself since Satanicsymbols and lyrics have long pervaded modernculture. What is new is its more open expression.

Open adherents of Satan are now demandingspace in the public square. Satanic groups have in-creasingly been holding high-profile staged events, even in Bible-belt areas, that aim to create a senseof normality around the abnormal Satan.

It is truly an offensive. It involves not justone Satanist group but a whole spectrum ofgroups in which each has its role in the overallbattle to secure social acceptance.

There are the “dark” Satanists who indeedworship Satan in macabre ceremonies thatfrighten the public. These radicals make Lu-ciferians, and more moderate Satanists, seemmore reasonable and acceptable to the main-stream. Finally, there are even “enlightened” Sa-tanists that claim they do not worship Satan atall, but merely use his image and symbols torepresent tenets of reason and science.

Different TacticsThese groups employ different tactics. Thus, somegroups, for example, have concentrated on merelyusing the legal system to advance their goals.

This is the case of the Satanic Temple. It has fo-cused on making inroads by taking advantage ofreligious freedom provisions to score symbolic vic-tories. They arranged, for example, to set up AfterSchool Satan Clubs in elementary schools acrossthe nation to counteract the influence of afterschool Christian clubs. They have also tried to setup hideous satanic statues next to Ten Com-mandments monuments on public land.

In Belle Plaine, the Temple first obtained the re-moval of the cross monument and then acceptedits return together with its Satanic monument.

Other Satanists are much more aggressive intheir behaviors and make no attempt to hide theircontempt for the Church. They organize, for ex-ample, caricatures of the Catholic Mass, calledBlack Masses, which are openly blasphemous andsacrilegious, even to the point of attempting (un-successfully) to desecrate a consecrated host.

l The Satanic Temple attempted to hold aBlack Mass at Harvard University, a time-hon-ored institution meant for America’s best andbrightest, in 2014.

l In 2015, Fox TV aired a new series onprime-time television called Lucifer. The pro-gram, recently approved for a third season, wasdesigned to mainstream the devil, making himappear to be a likeable and misunderstoodyoung man.

l That same year, Bert’s Entertain-ment Complex in Detroit unveiled the Sa-tanic Temple’s 9-foot tall statue of thedemon Baphomet with two children nextto it. In addition, this statue was designedto allow children to climb up and sit onthe demon’s lap.

l On December 24,2015, Christmas Eve, afterconducting a Black Massand mocking Our LordJesus Christ, Satanists inOklahoma performed whatthey call the Consumptionof Mary. This involved de-capitating her holy image, pulling a pig’s heartfrom inside the statue and eating it, then

One group in Oklahoma City held strange cere-monies on the street in front of a Catholic church,in which they defiled, with fake blood, a statue ofthe Virgin Mary on Christmas Eve. Another groupset up a Satanic church in an upscale family shop-ping area in Spring, Texas.

The True Goal: Numb the ResistanceThese Satanists care little if they win or lose theconcrete fight over the monument, the statue, theBlack Mass, or whatever. Using the false argumentof religious freedom, they will seek to remove across or religious symbol in the public square. Ifthey win, the hated cross will be gone. If they lose, they will strive to put up their monument withequal exposure.

But all this is insignificant to them. They areafter much larger rewards. Their true strategic goalis the framed debate, with its substantial media ex-posure and its accompanying tragic numbing ofthe fibers of resistance in the souls of many.

Belle Plaine monuments and Oklahoma CityBlack Masses are not aimed at attracting a largenumber of followers—very few ever show up.Rather, they seek to put Satan in the news andmake Satanists accepted at the table. They try towear down the resistance of Christians who op-pose their offensive actions. They gradually hopeto win a reluctant acceptance on the part of thegeneral public tired of fighting against them.

Protest: The Most Effective ActionMany Christians have tried to oppose the satanic of-fensive through legal proceedings. While such ac-tions are welcome and are sometimes successful, they cannot be the only line of defense. Some judgesmay rule favorably, but there will always be a federal

judge somewhere to side with the Satanists. The most effective means of action is public,

legal, prayerful, and peaceful protest. Since thebattlefield is the hearts of Americans, it is in thecourt of public opinion that the real fight takesplace. Protest denies the Satanists the acceptancethey crave. Protest nourishes and invigorates thefibers of resistance Satanists seek to numb. Re-gardless of the outcome, if the protests are ferventenough, the bad publicity generates results thatfrustrate the Satanists’ goals and often ends inChristian victory.

This can be seen in three ways.(1) Direct VictoryWhen a protest is fervent enough, it often stim-

ulates authorities to find the means to take action. This is what happened with the Satanic Temple’s

Black Mass scheduled at Harvard University for May12, 2014. Thousands of students and Catholicsprocessed through the streets of Cambridge toprotest this blasphemous act from being staged oncampus. Tens of thousands signed petitions. Theevent was canceled.

smashing what remained of her sacred image. This was donein a public venue; people paid money to watch this on a stage.

l Oklahoma City granted Satanists a permit to hold a pub-lic sacrilege in front of Saint Joseph Old Cathedral on Christ-mas Eve, December 24, 2015. One Satanist poured stage bloodover a statue of the Virgin Mary treated with “sulfur powderand ash.”

l Beginning in Phoenix, Arizona,in 2015, Satanists in various citiesacross America tried to introduce anopening prayer (to Satan) at the CityCouncil meetings.

l The Greater Church of Luciferset up shop in a family-friendly shop-ping district in Old Town Spring,Texas in October of 2015.

l In 2016, the Satanic Temple

began infiltrating our schools to “teach” our children the“virtues” of Satanism. They have already

started in a school in Portland, Ore-gon and they have spread toTacoma, Washington.

l In December 2016, a massivesatanic pentagram was placed in aFlorida park, in Boca Raton’s San-

born Square, located next to a nativ-ity scene. Preston Smith got a permit

from the city for the display.l Professed Satanists are running for pub-

lic office (California).l In the summer of 2017, the Satanic Temple opposed the

display of a Christian symbol (cross) in the Veterans’ Park inBelle Plain, Minnesota. They then proceeded to demand theright to display a satanic symbol there as well.

In rejecting “Satanand his works” theseCatholics are honoringtheir baptismal vows, and in so doing, making reparation forthe blasphemousBlack Mass held inOklahoma City, 2016.

Page 10: Prince of Peace - tfp. · PDF fileForeign Correspondents: Charles E. Schaffer, Austria; José Carlos Sepulveda, Brazil; Philip Moran, United ... Magisterium of the Roman Catholic Church,

And this is what happened July 17, 2017, whencity officials eliminated the free speech zone in theVeterans’ Memorial Park.

(2) Reversing the Victim GameWhen the protest is fervent enough, it has the

effect of depriving the Satanists of the stage theydemand to push their victim narrative. In fact, thevictim game is reversed. People begin to see thetownspeople, Catholics or other offended partiesas the victims of authorities that deliver top-downdecisions against the wishes of those they are sup-posed to represent.

Again regardless of the outcome, the Satanistscome to be seen as the imposers and oppressors thatthey are. This is the bitter case of the Pensacola CityCouncil, which allowed the Satanic Temple to de-liver the opening invocation on July 14, 2016.

Sometimes this perception of new Christianvictims is enough to win the case. At other times, the Satanists may win a victory, but it is a pyrrhicvictory, that leaves a nasty aftertaste. Even a courtvictory can represent social defeat for them. It re-sults in rejection by the general public, not the ac-ceptance which is their true goal.

(3) Making the Satanists RetreatFinally, when Satanists perceive an overwhelm-

ing rejection of their actions, they often retreat. Or,they are forced to beat a dead horse by carrying ona program with no future.

When the Greater Church of Lucifer set up shopin Spring, Texas, the protests against the intrusionturned local people and merchants against them. The social rejection eventually led to the Satanists’abandoning the location they had rented.

Similarly, the bad publicity drummed up when103,000 people signed a petition against an After-School Satan Club in Port Defiance, Washington, was so intense that two weeks after its launch, nota single student signed up.

Protests Block the Satanists’ GoalThus, protest is fundamental in the fightagainst the Satanist offensive. The main

thing to never forget is that social acceptance is theSatanists’ goal. Thus, protest is an excellent form offree speech that can be extremely effective in deny-ing this acceptance. Legal, prayerful, and peacefulprotests offend no one’s rights. In their strengtheningof the moral fibers and the natural horror for the devilin people’s souls, protests help assure a social victory, regardless of the actions taken by authorities.

Protests Help Uphold the Moral OrderIt is also important to remember two reasons whyChristians must protest Satanism. First, by theiractions and stated positions, Satanists reject amoral order based on an objective notion of rightand wrong that is found in the Ten Command-ments. They consistently support abortion, same-sex “marriage” and so many sins that destroysociety and offend God.

Secondly, Christians are practicing self-defensesince it is the Satanists who are attacking what re-mains of Christian civilization. By protesting,Christians counter-attack and send a message tothose who contemplate such actions that they willbe opposed.

Protesting helps maintain the natural barrier ofhorror that has always stood and must continue tostand between the devil and humanity.

Protests Mean Fidelity to Our Baptismal VowsPerhaps the most important reason to protest is thatit serves as a reaffirmation of one’s baptismal vows.At Baptism, Christians are called to reject Satan andall his works. At Baptism, Christians affirm belief inGod and promise to love and serve Him for their life-times. When tempted so brutally and directly by thissatanist offensive to renege on baptismal vows, legal, peaceful, and prayerful protest is the natural ex-pression of love and fidelity. n

TFP in Action™N O V E M B E R / D E C E M B E R 2 0 1 7Fighting the good fight for moral values

For ten days in July, young volunteers of TFPStudent Action spent their summer vacationtraveling to six major cities in three states as

well as Washington, D.C. They campaigned onbusy street intersections against the perennial sinof abortion. Inspired and motivated most of all bytheir love of God, the young men of TFP StudentAction epitomized French poet and writer PaulCladel’s famous quote: “Youth was not made forpleasure, but for heroism.”

The scene on the street corners was colorfuland lively: bagpipes blaring; crimson standardsemblazoned with the golden TFP lion waving inthe wind; large pro-life signs and banners pro-claiming the evil of abortion; and young mendressed in suits and ties with red capes invitingpassing motorists to honk their horns in support.Pedestrians and on-lookers on both sides of the

issue could be seen engaging the young men in an-imated discussions.

The Pro-Life Caravan first stopped at the HuntValley Mall, just 19 miles outside of Baltimore,Maryland. Despite the rain, the enthusiasticyoung volunteers unfolded their banners andraised their standards to the full view of the busymall shoppers and motorists. A police officer whoanswered a complaint from a passing motorist, approached and instead, complimented theyoung men by saying, “I agree with you. Keep itup!”

On the second day of the campaign, Washing-ton, D.C. was the target. The busy intersection ofK Street and 17th Street NW was the perfect spotto get reactions. One lady stopped her car, rolleddown her window and said, “I agree with you. Youspeak the truth because I had an abortion and I’ve

had to live with it every single day. I know thetruth and I know abortion is a horrible thing.”On the opposite side of the issue, a man pointedhis hand as if holding a gun towards the volun-teers. He was clearly “pro-choice.”

Harrisburg and Camp Hill, Pennsylvania werethe stops on the third day. There was a steadyflow of honking cars driven by obvious support-ers of the campaign. One man, however, un-equivocally loud in proclaiming where his loyaltylay, screamed: “Throw all babies in the trash—Hail Satan!” Another motorist pulled over, refus-ing to honk her horn. But a TFP Student Actionvolunteer pointed out a sign on her car that said“Dog adoption and education services,” and said,“If you like adoption for dogs, why not for babies?”Realizing the contradiction in her attitude, thedriver decided to honk her horn.

The volunteers headed to Baltimore, Marylandon the fourth day. Downtown Pratt Street was busywith people that day resulting in the distributionof hundreds of the TFP flyer, “10 Reasons to Pro-tect the Unborn.” One cyclist stopped for a briefconversation and commented, “My mother con-templated aborting me. I thank God she didn’t.” Headded, “I have three beautiful children.” At somepoint during the campaign, a kind and generouspro-life couple cooled the young volunteers fromthe sweltering heat by offering snow cones. Whata blessing!

Day five brought them to Lewisburg, Pennsyl-vania. The volunteers noticed that most of the mo-torists passing by were favorable. One man crossedthe street to thank each one of the volunteers. Afterpraying, the group shouted the TFP battle cry:“Tradition! Family! Property! — America!”

The sixth day of the campaign was spent at thepopular tourist destination of Gettysburg. After set-ting up in the center of Lincoln Square, flyers werehanded out to passers-by. Then a man in a carshouted, “Everybody hates you! Go home and dosomething useful!” A lady who stood at the corner

across the street, yelled, “Get a job!” An-other lady with twochildren in her carshouted, “I hate you! Ilove abortion!” But inthe afternoon, a ladygave the young volun-teers a large batch ofhomemade chocolatechip cookies—enoughto end the day on asweeter note.

The last three daysof the campaign were spent in the bustling city ofChicago and its suburbs. Tents were set up in anearby camp site which served as home for the nextthree days. The first day in Chicago was spent atMadison and La Salle Streets. The young volunteershad to struggle against the wind to raise their stan-dards and unfurl their banners and signs. Therewere plenty of engaging debates with pro-abortion-ists and a good amount of pro-life support as well. The next two days were spent at Water Tower Placeon Michigan Ave. and the Art Institute of Chicagowith some “colorful” reactions from the public.

To conclude the campaign, the young volunteerswent to Saint James Chapel, a marvelous church re-sembling the famous Sainte-Chapelle in Paris. Be-fore leaving the church, the group sang the SalveRegina in honor of the Blessed Mother Mary.

The experience gained by these young menthroughout the ten-day campaign enabled themto sharpen their debating skills and stand up todefend the moral values we all hold so dear. Hav-ing attended a TFP Chivalry Camp, they alreadyknow that defending the rights of the unborn isjust one important way to practice the virtue ofchivalry—boldness and peaceful Christian daringin the public square. n

Ionce heard a very young boycall out for his daddy in abeautiful, clear, and diminu-

tive voice while he was playing. The father, moved by it, re-sponded lovingly, “Yes, my heart?”And something about that inter-action touched me. If that boy ishis father’s heart, then he is themost important thing to him. Theheart is the core or center of a per-son in a figurative way. And, in themost literal and physical sense, theheart is the engine or the motor ofthe body. It pumps our entire lives, never sleeping. It keeps us alive. Ifa father can love his son to the core

of his being so that he calls himhis heart, then we can un-

derstand more how Jesusmust love us.

In the image of the Sa-cred Heart, Christ extends to us His flam-ing heart that has been lanced andpierced with thorns. It is a sufferingheart. Christ loves us by saving our lives

in exchange for His life. We, as the Body ofChrist, are called to do the same.

One way this love is embodied is in pro-life work. It is, at its essence, a work of self-

giving love for children in the womb whodon’t even know we are loving them. And it is

a lifesaving work that comes with a cost. Thecrown of thorns on the heart and the pierc-

ing with the lance symbolize the

suffering that all those whodefend the unborn will un-dergo; defend the unbornand you will be treated likethem. Despite suffering,Christ’s heart keeps on beat-ing inside His body. So mustwe persevere within theBody of Christ.

And we worship the Sa-cred Heart of Jesus. Hisheart is part of His body, and it is the body of God.The Feast of the SacredHeart, and our devotion tothat heart throughout theyear, bring to the forefront

the reality of the Incarna-tion. And so does pro-lifework. Just as the heart is aphysical organ, pro-lifework is a physical con-

cern, not just a spiritual one. We must pray for thechildren in the womb, but we must also encounterthem physically and defend them physically. Wepray at the places where they are being killed, wecounsel the moms in whose wombs they are nour-ished, we bury the bodies of those we could notsave. We act, in the body, because we are moved byHis love, which He shows us in His Body.

Moreover, the passion of love in the SacredHeart is also the passion of love by which we de-fend the baby in the womb; His heart of mercy isthe mercy we extend to all who have been involvedin abortion. Pro-lifers are often stereotyped asbeing single-mindedly concerned with saving ba-bies and nothing more. This claim couldn’t be fur-ther from the truth. Our ministry at Priests for Lifeministers to everybody. Rachel’s Vineyard offershealing retreats for families broken by abortion.Silent No More gives them a voice and a vote. Thisis the work of mercy.

Jesus said He is meek and humble of heart, andthis also brings us to the heart of the pro-life move-ment. The attitude of humility is the opposite of pro-choice, which asserts itself. Humility humbles itself

John Horvat: Just a word of explanation. I appeared on yourshow recently and read your book, The Super Couple. I wasvery impressed by your perspectives on marriage in ourfrenzied times. It coincides with a lot of the themes Idevelop that stress the need for stability in marriage. In my book, Return to Order, I talk about what I call freneticintemperance in economy and culture, which is the desireto have everything instantly and effortlessly. I talk abouthow this impacts society and economy. How is this freneticintemperance reflected in today’s marriages?

Dr. Christine Bacon: This is such a great question to pon-der. But the frenetic intemperance of marriage is that desire tohave the “perfect” marriage on day one of a couple’s life togetherwithout any need for work or without ever having to endure anytrials. It is represented in the “if this spouse doesn’t make you

happy, then divorce him/her and move on to thenext one who certainly will make you happy”mindset. We rush through relationships withoutever taking the time to sit back (before, duringand after [in some cases]) and consider what aremy expectations of marriage. We take little to notime to consider what we are to sacrifice, andwill our sacrifice produce fruit. Frenetic intem-perance in marriage mirrors frenetic intemper-ance in our spending with an attitude thatseems to say “buy now, pay later.”

John Horvat: Why do you passionatelybelieve that marriage should be saved evenwhen it appears that all is lost?

and accepts the choices of God. It accepts thatGod’s will and plans are better than our own, even if they come unexpectedly. A story re-cently broke about an Olympic athlete whodiscovered she was pregnant weeks before theOlympics. Blindsided and panicked by thepregnancy, she hastily aborted so she couldparticipate in the Olympics. But the decisionwas met with instant regret. She and the fatherrealized that what they decided demonstrateda desire to control their circumstances. Shewishes she had had a more open heart.

The Sacred Heart is a welcoming and openheart. It welcomes the unexpected. When wehave Jesus’ heart, we see Him in the stranger. We must not treat our children as strangers

in the womb, but we must welcome them asif we were welcoming Christ. We make roomfor the woman in crisis as if we were wel-coming Christ. We open our hearts tothe broken-hearted who regret theirabortions. And we even open our heartsto those who have yet to see the error oftheir ways. We see Christ in each ofthese and we choose love.

The Sacred Heart of Jesus, and ourworship of that heart, represent the heartof the pro-life movement, and enable usto be transformed according to thatheart. Every aspect of the pro-life move-ment is motivated by love, and that is whywe can be confident of victory, for “Love isstronger than death, more powerful eventhan hell” (Song of Songs 8:6). SacredHeart of Jesus, lead us to the victory of lifeand of love! n

Dr. Bacon: I believe it should be saved because I knowthat it can be saved. All marriages! Even in cases of abuse, addiction or infidelity, I’ve seen people’s hearts turn andtheir behaviors change. Most, though, believe in quittingon the relationship because they believe there is no hopeof redemption. My faith teaches me that redemption ispossible for every soul and thus for every marriage. Theirony is that most hearts turn back toward one anotherprecisely because one spouse did not lose hope and be-came a Stander—and stood for reconciliation until deathdo they part. The primary role of the spouse is to love theother yet we cease to love at numerous moments withinour marriages and thus the loving feelings go away. Whenthis happens, what we need to do, what I do in my dailyprofession, is to teach couples how to actively love an-other. I give them strategies for ways to be patient and kindto one another, to not be rude, and to not keep a record ofevery wrong their spouse committed against them. Ap-pearances are deceiving.

John Horvat: Could you comment on theimportance of having a whole society thatbelieves in marriage and disapproves ofdivorce? How does this reinforce marriage?

Dr. Bacon: Absolutely! There is a theory taught inacademia called the Theory of Social Proof. In simpleterms, it means that if everyone else is doing it, it mustbe ok. Abortion rates went up (not down) when it be-came legal because it validated in many minds that “Ifthe law says it’s ok to do, then I guess I am ok to haveone myself.” When supposed “no-fault” divorce becamelegal in the 1970s, divorce also skyrocketed for the samereasons—“If everyone else is doing it, it must be ok.”

We look to our leaders, our mentors, and those whohave gone before us to show us the way and share withus their wisdom. If our mentors are divorcing they willnot only NOT stop us from considering divorce our-selves (because their actions speak louder than theirwords) but sadly, many who have divorced will oftentell us to do so in order to validate their having gottendivorced. More than two generations out from this no-fault divorce ruling there are fewer examples of thosewho fought to save their marriages and lived “happilyever after” than there are couples who have divorcedand so our children have few to emulate.

Should society again validate the efficacy of standingfor our marriages and teach our children that to do so isa much more preferable option to divorce for a plethoraof reasons, the divorce rate would come to a screechinghalt. If adults considering divorce would honestly con-sider the pain they endured as a child from their ownparents’ divorce they’d also likely slow the divorce trainsignificantly. But often that does not happen. The painone is currently enduring in his or her marriage is so ex-treme that the potential divorcee convinces themself

that their case is unique and that their own children will“get over it” just like they did—without realizing thatthey never really did get over it as seen through theirown consideration of divorce.

To be more succinct, for I fear I have digressed, if whenone considers divorce, one’s parents, colleagues, andfriends all delivered the same message that the marriageis worth fighting for and that happiness can absolutelyreturn, then a struggling spouse would regain the neededhope and encouragement to continue fighting. When allthe same individuals tell that person that divorce is a vi-able option and the stander’s voice is drowned out bythem it is nearly impossible to overcome.

John Horvat: Could you speak about the stabilitythat marriage gives to society? The stability overgenerations?

Dr. Bacon: Marriage is foundational to any humansociety. The phrase “there is strength in numbers” canfirst refer to marriage and the family. Marriage givesthe greatest opportunity to practice conflict manage-ment skills, interpersonal communication, love, re-spect, and compassion. Marriage provides a safe placeto share, to bare one’s greatest fears, failings, successes, and every other example in between. Marriage teachesselflessness. Marriage teaches us that we have a choiceto focus on one’s strengths over one’s weaknesses be-cause no one sees both more clearly and intimatelythan a spouse.

All the strengths that any society needs to surviveand thrive are first practiced in the marriage. And aswe’ve seen in today’s society, not only are we now lack-ing in those practices and qualities in our marriages andfamilies but we are lacking them in our governments

C r u s a d e N o v e m b e r / D e c e m b e r 2 0 1 7 n w w w . T F P . O R G 15

The indissolubility of marriage is instinctive. Everyone knows, or at least senses, that marriage should be forever. But the struggle to make this happen is a muchbigger story with the capacity of sanctifying the spouses if they take up thechallenge and never give up. Padlocks used as symbols of undying love cover thesides of Pont de l’Archevêché (Archbishop’s Bridge) in Paris.

and our media as well. The epic levels of mudslingingand disrespect we see between political parties and onreality TV shows first began in our marriages. We do notknow how to be nice to one another anymore and wecertainly don’t know how to put the needs of others be-fore our own anymore.

Should a married couple learn and put into practicethese loving and respectful strategies, those same prac-tices, attitudes and behaviors would naturally carry intoour professional and public relationships as well. Shoulda society begin to practice these edifying behaviors andteach them to our children, they would necessarily bepassed on to the next generation of children as well. Sta-ble marriages (where one individual feels secure and con-fident that the other will still be there when they get homeeach night—despite whatever negative things may havetaken place), bring to society the same security and whereotherwise its citizens seek to find order, truth and some-thing they can believe in. Where there is security there isstability. Where there is one the other naturally follows.

John Horvat: You are Catholic as I am. Could youspeak about the role of the Catholic faith inmarriage? Why is the Church and sacramentallife so important to marriage?

Dr. Bacon: As a young spouse, Inever fully understood the teachingthat marriage is meant to make usholy, not happy. It soundedso…well…miserable. It sounded asif to choose holiness one waschoosing suffering and doomingthemselves to a marriage of tolera-tion—similar to the marriages ofour grandparents who stayed mar-ried until death but were unhap-pily so. Marriages of today areparadoxical to that. They seek onlyhappiness and thus lack longevityand commitment. After nearlythirty-four years of marriage andhaving endured many trials, infi-delity and even separation, I havecome to see that the journey itselfgives me the opportunity for both.If I choose happiness I will likely beneither happy nor holy. If I chooseholiness I will likely attain both.

When I interviewed my SuperCouples to discover the formula fortheir extreme happiness in marriage,I saw quickly the formula that usesthe acronym S.A.C.R.E.D. (I can’thelp to think how detailed God is tohave chosen that acronym to express

extreme happiness!) If we look only at the first letter ofthat acronym, we find the key to holiness: Selflessness.Super spouses strive daily to put the needs of theirspouses before their own needs. And that is exactly whatthe Church teaches. It is exactly what Christ taught. It isexactly what Christ DID. He surrendered Himself for theneeds (and souls) of each and every one of us. We arecalled to be Christlike in all our thoughts, words and ac-tions. If all my thoughts, words and actions toward myspouse are selfless and focused on his good, how can Inot be holy and how can we not both be happy?

For the Catholic marriage, the Sacraments magnifythis calling to holiness and simultaneously give us thetools through which we can more easily become holy. IfI receive the Eucharist as often as possible, my physicaland spiritual body becomes more Christlike and thus Iam more able to live my marriage in a more Christlikemanner. I am strengthened. The Sacrament of Reconcil-iation at its very core teaches the need for humility, for-giveness, repentance and then grants grace to the seekerof those qualities. It reminds me always to humble myselfbefore my spouse as neither I nor he is perfect and thuswe will fail. It teaches me to forgive not seven times, butseventy times seven times my husband who since 1983

has never once remembered to put his shoesaway in the front closet! (Notice a slight

note of sarcasm there.) The Sacramentof Baptism reminds me that I am partof a bigger family and that thingsaren’t always to be done in a way thatis strictly Christine Bacon focusedbut family focused. And Confirma-tion teaches me to soldier on.

Our Catholic faith teaches most ofall the essential need to pray with andfor my spouse. It teaches that no mar-riage can survive without daily com-munication just as no relationshipswith our Lord and Creator can be sus-tained without daily prayer. Andlastly, the reason why I am a stander,is that my Catholic faith teaches andexpects the forgiveness for all sinnerseven when an injustice has been com-mitted. Christ forgave us in spite ofthe fact that we were stealing, lying, drinking, and committing adultery.

My Catholic faith teaches me that I amto do the same. My love for my spouseis not contingent upon his good be-haviors but on my following the ex-ample of the merciful God. To be aholy spouse means to also be a merci-ful and loving spouse—just as Christis to me, a member of His Church andHis Body. Need I say more? n

One hundred years ago, the Mother of God appeared in Fatima,Portugal a total of six times. At every one of those apparitions

she made the same simple request—“Pray the Rosary.”In an effort to equip as many Americans as possible with a rosary

worthy of her request, America Needs Fatima has distributed a totalof 1,523,460 Fatima Centennial Rosaries as of August of 2017. In an-ticipation of further orders of approximately 260,000, we could po-tentially distribute 1,785,866 Fatima Centennial Rosaries during the100th Anniversary Year of the Fatima apparitions. This monumentaleffort was made possible through the generosity of many donors whosupport our work through their sacrificial gifts.

As we approach the year 2018, let us all redouble our efforts to ful-fill Our Lady of Fatima’s request to pray therosary. As Pope Pius XI has said:

“The Rosary is a powerfulweapon to put the demonsto flight and to keep one-self from sin… If youdesire peace in yourhearts, in yourhomes, and in yourcountry, assembleeach evening to re-cite the Rosary. Letnot even one daypass without saying it,no matter how bur-dened you may be withmany cares and labors.” n

ANF PROGRESS REPORT

On August 12, 2017, America Needs Fatima organized yetanother anti-blasphemy rally. The infamous P*** Christ

blasphemy once again reared its ugly head. The blasphemyis a color photograph of a crucifix immersed in the artist’surine. It came to the Station Museum of Contemporary Art inJune, 2017, and America Needs Fatima has been doing ralliesof reparation since then and will continue until it leaves.

The rally on August 12th at 4:30 p.m. was attended by alarge crowd of enthusiastic Catholic Texans. A group had ar-rived early and was forming around a large statue of Our Ladyof Fatima, brought by a participant, while others were holdingthe America Needs Fatima banner and signs boldly pro-claiming their rejection of the blasphemy. Before long every-one had spread out along the sidewalk in front of the museum, rosaries at the ready.

One gentleman in a wheelchair came to the protest, spar-ing himself no excuse to defend the honor of Our Lord. In spiteof daunting physical challenges, this soldier of Christ was thefirst to arrive at the rally spot and the last to leave. This was ahumbling lesson for all of us. Is not Our Lord worthy of over-coming every obstacle we may have?

It was beautiful to see the joy on people’s faces as they slowlytrickled in. When they saw the formidable presence of the firstgroup their faces lit up. What brought so much joy and happiness

was the realization that they were not alone. In the immense cityof Houston, where sin is so rampant, they are not alone in the fight. They are not alone in saying “NO! We will not stand by idle as OurLord is blasphemed and persecuted.”

The full Rosary was prayed along with Catholic hymns andother prayers of reparation. Slogans were given between eachdecade. A few examples of the slogans are:

Leader: Why are we here?Reply: Like Mary at the foot of the cross, we are here to con-

sole Jesus. Another one really brought home the gravity of blasphemy:Leader: Blasphemy! Reply: A sin that cries out to Heaven for vengeance! Repara-

tion! Reparation! Reparation! Thus, with the echoes of these slogans still reverberating

off the surrounding buildings, the participants wrapped uptheir protest after spending nearly two hours in the Texan sungiving great glory to God. n

Transgender Tyranny Opposed in TexasAmerica Needs Fatima made its presence known in a prayer rally

on the steps of the Texas Capitol, in Austin, Texas this August15th when a Texas version of a North Carolina-style “bathroom bill”dealing with “transgender” people was put to a vote. Republicanshave continued pushing to make Texas the first state to follow NorthCarolina and North Carolina and prevent “transgender” bathroomtyranny in schools and public spaces.

Trying to shed a little light on a dark dilemma, the main versionof the Texas bill would have required transgender people to use pub-lic bathrooms that correspond with the sex on their birth certificate.

Practicing perseverance, these Catholics protest a blasphemous “art”exhibit, and will continue to do so until the filth is removed from their city.

In the land of the Alamo, will this be Catholics’ last stand inthe face of the transgender insanity that has swept the nation?

Hurricane Harvey was truly devastating; weather officialsused words like “catastrophic.” Many people lost family

members to flooding and houses were destroyed. However, it isduring times of suffering that people turn back to God. Withthe aim of touching as many souls as possible, two full-time vol-unteers of TFP-Louisiana distributed hundreds of rosaries andSaint Michael medals at the George R. Brown Convention Cen-ter in downtown Houston where ten thousand refugees werebeing sheltered. e response from the refugees was that of anAmerica that yearns to return to God.

On August 31st, people were gathering around the two vol-unteers to receive their free Rosaries. Wanting to make surethat everyone who received the rosary knew that it was notjust a piece of jewelry, the two volunteers would instruct themon how to pray the rosary. Certain parts of the Hail Mary some-times brought tears to the eyes of the refugees. One man, as hewiped a tear from his cheek, said: “I remember learning thatfrom my mother. It’s been too long since I have prayed thatprayer. It’s time for me to come back.”

ere was a large presence of policemen at the ConventionCenter to keep order. ey loved the Saint Michael medal andwere extremely thankful. One police officer said: “I already haveone on me, but I will take one for my friend. He needs one.”

Having exhausted the supply of rosaries and Saint Michaelmedals, the TFP-Louisiana members wearily made their wayback to their car. e eventful day left them with much to re-flect on. e warm reception from everyone shows us all thatwe need not be afraid of taking our Catholic Faith into thepublic square. When done with courtesy and dignity, peopleappreciate it and are attracted to the Faith. ousands ofrefugees received the religious objects enthusiastically be-cause they were suffering from Hurricane Harvey. ey werehumbled and wanted to turn back to God.

e man who humbly acknowledged, “It is time for me tocome back,” spoke for all of America that day. Indeed, the dev-astation of Hurricane Harvey revealed that it is time for Amer-ica to come back to the Father’s House. n

“It’s Time for Me to Come Back.”B Y Z E C H A R I A H L O N G

In the wake of natural disasters like Hurricane Harvey, the Rosary offersrefugees hope and the comfort that only the Mother of God can give.

Unfortunately, just like in North Carolina, some of theworld’s biggest companies came out against the Texas bill, in-cluding Apple and Amazon. Even big oil joined the fight bysummer, with top Exxon Mobil and Shell executives saying thebill would harm Texas’ reputation and “negatively impact eco-nomic growth.”

Showing that it will take more than the nation’s biggestcompanies to discourage efforts to restore sanity in our dem-ocratic system, America Needs Fatima stood with nearly 100Texans on the courthouse steps to voice their support for the“bathroom bill.”

Despite the heat, these Catholics stood—and knelt—inan effort to keep use of bathrooms in Texas safe and Texans’right to privacy respected. They prayed with conviction toGod and the Virgin Mary in reparation for the sins of thenation, especially the sin of standing idly by while propo-nents of transgender tyranny run the country.

Supporters of the Texan “bathroom bill” say they’renot giving up, but given the legislative roadblocks, thebattle is now likely to shift outside the Capitol and intothe 2018 elections. n

On the Feast of the Assumption, concerned citizensof all ages sought to keep Texans’ right to privacyand safety in public restrooms respected.

“I brought my Fatima Centennial Rosary into the nursinghome that I administer the Holy Eucharist to on Sundays. There is one resident there, named Jessie. He was in a horribleaccident, took both his legs and he sustained a head injurythat has left him unable to speak. When he saw my rosary hestarted crying and kissing it. I told him he could keep it as hisown, and he looked at me, clutched it to his heart and saidthe only two words I have ever heard him speak: “Thank you.””

Scheduling a home visit with a pilgrim statue of Our Ladyof Fatima begins with postcards sent out by the America

Needs Fatima scheduling office in Kansas. These cards aresent to the area the custodians will be touring. Then, ourscheduling office usually follows up with phone calls. Thescheduler works out the time and day that is convenient forany person who expresses an interest.

Several years ago, a lady named Elizabeth received apostcard from our scheduling office asking if she wanted apilgrim statue of Our Lady of Fatima to visit her home. Shehad a very negative reaction. In fact, it was so bad she ac-tually thought to herself; “Why would anyone want to re-ceive that (referring to the pilgrim statue) in their home?”

She admitted that her reaction was not the best. As sheput it, she was not “in a good place” at that particular timeof her life.

Elizabeth stuffed the postcard into a drawer, intend-ing to dispose of it later on.

Years passed and the postcard was all but forgotten. Oneday she was rifling through her drawers looking for some

random object. Instead, she found the forgotten postcard. She remembered how she had reacted years ago, sud-

denly feeling remorse at her reaction. When she realizedthat she had turned away the statue of Mary from comingto her home, she began to cry.

While in this state, her phone rang. By the designs ofGod, it happened to be a call from our scheduling office. The caller said; “Hello, Elizabeth, this is Catherine fromAmerica Needs Fatima. Would you like the pilgrim statueof Our Lady of Fatima to come to your home?”

Already in an emotional state, the very words of thescheduler drove the point even deeper and she brokedown sobbing. The unsuspecting scheduler thought itwas an inconvenient time, so she asked, “I’m sorry. Is thisnot a good time?”

Elizabeth responded, between heavy sobs, “No, youcould not have timed it any better.”

Elizabeth scheduled a visit and she finally receivedMary into her home. n

On the morning of May 13th, 2017,perhaps the most amazing eventthat happened at the Shrine of

Our Lady of Fatima in Portugal was thecanonization of Jacinta Marto and herbrother, Francisco. They became theyoungest children to be canonized (whoare not martyrs) in nearly 2,000 years ofChristianity. How did these two childrenachieve Christian perfection at suchyoung ages? How did they acquirevirtues in the heroic degree which tookother saints a lifetime of asceticism toachieve? How did Our Lady transformthese two children into great saints?

Transformation from Child to SaintThe saints agree that perfect obediencerequires giving up one’s own will. SaintsFrancisco and Jacinta adhered faithfullyto Mary’s will at the least prompting. Herapparitions gave their lives a higher pur-pose and transformed them in a matter ofmonths. One sign of this transformationis a change of will. Our Lady told them topray and they did. Our Lady asked themto offer sacrifices and they did. They didnumerous penances such as wearingcoarse ropes directly against their skin allthe time. Even when the rope cut intotheir skin and the pain it caused pre-vented them from sleeping at night, theywouldn’t relent from practicing such a se-vere penance. However, when Our Ladyinstructed them not to wear the ropes atnight, they again obeyed.

Another remarkable transformationtook place in the very hearts of Jacintaand Francisco. The children’s only desirewas to please Mary. They were willing todo anything for love of Jesus and Mary, offering penances of hunger, thirst, dis-comfort and the constant harassment ofdisbelievers.

One radical example of the veryreal persecution they endured oc-curred on August 13, 1917. On theirway to their fourth appointmentwith Our Lady, the three childrenwere abducted by the administratorof Ourém. During their imprison-ment, the other prisoners wanted to dis-tract Jacinta by singing and dancing withher. She quickly tired of this. In order to dosomething more pleasing to Mary, Jacintahung her Brown Scapular on the wall, in-vited everyone in the prison cell to kneelbefore it, and they all prayed the Rosary.

Even when the administrator threat-ened to throw them in a cauldron ofboiling oil if they didn’t reveal the secretOur Lady entrusted to them, these chil-dren chose death rather than displeas-ing Our Lady. To live or to die no longermattered to them. To please Jesus andMary became their only concern.

Mary Changed Their Lives and DreamsIt is known that these children were notalways little saints. They began as verytypical children. One example of this isthat, before the Angel of Peace appearedto them, they prayed an abbreviated ver-sion of the Rosary. Instead of saying eachprayer, they would simply say the words“Our Father” and “Hail Mary.” In this way, they were able to get back to their gamesall the sooner. Mary radically changedtheir lives. What they used to see as achore was now a source of spiritual nour-ishment. They soon burned with the de-sire to pray the Rosary, not just every day,but many times throughout the day.

All children grow up full of hopes andexpectations. Some will dream of be-coming famous like a professional athleteor an actor. Others dream of becoming

rich. Others dream of something morehonorable like becoming a firefighter, apoliceman, a professor or a war hero.Surely, Francisco and Jacinta had theirchildhood dreams as well.

But, when Our Lady appeared tothem, any dream they may have had van-ished. They no longer dreamed aboutthe joys of the world. Their only joy wasto obey Mary’s will. They no longerhoped for a long, full and happy life.Their only hope was to go to Heaven. They no longer dreamed of fame orriches. Their only dream was to pleaseGod, console the Sacred Hearts of Jesusand Mary, and convert and save sinners.

They Made Her Heart TheirsHow were such young children trans-formed into great saints? The answerseems to be an invitation and a chal-lenge to everyone, especially children, for all times. They simply made Mary’swill their will. They made her desirestheir desires. They made her hopes anddreams theirs. In short, they made herheart theirs. Perhaps, this is the best ex-planation of what devotion to the Im-maculate Heart of Mary is. n

Barnaby was a juggler. That was hisprofession, you see, and he wasquite good at it. His father before

him had been a juggler, and so had hisgrandpa. His father had taught him howto juggle and how to dance, how to tum-ble and how to sing.

But when Barnaby was about tenyears old, something very sad hap-pened—his father died. Now, Barnabymust continue to do as his father hadtaught him, wherever he was welcome. So, he gathered up the little treasures hisfather had left him—his two sticks, acouple of hoops, some brightly coloredballs, and some apples—and set off tofind some work.

People stopped to watch his tricks

and many times they laughed andsmiled. While spring flowered into sum-mer, Barnaby tramped all over the coun-tryside to earn his daily bread. The skywas his roof at night, and during the daypeople were kind to him. All went verywell until winter crept in.

One day, Barnaby sat shivering at thefoot of a big oak tree, trying to keep backhis tears, as the cold seemed to freezeeven his thoughts. Just then, he heard amuffled step and, looking up, saw amonk before him. “Where is your home, young boy?” he asked kindly. Barnabyshook his head miserably. “Would youlike to come with me?” the monk askedhim. “Come, you will be warm presently.”So it happened that Barnaby found a

new home where he was kept warm andwell fed.

Christmas was fast approaching. Themonks were preparing gifts to presentto the Infant Jesus and His Mother.Brother John was composing a newchant, for which Brother Matthew waswriting lyrics. Brother James was carv-ing a gorgeous new manger, and BrotherJuniper polished the altar candlesticksuntil they gleamed like the sun. Barnaby, watching the monks as they worked, grew increasingly sad. “Oh, how worth-less I am!” he cried to himself, “Whatright have I to stay here in this abbeywhen I don’t know how to do anythinguseful?”

One day, Barnaby knelt in the chapeland stared up at the statue. “Oh, sweetVirgin,” he sighed, “how can I serveyou?” Suddenly, the bells of the churchbegan to peal and lovely waves of soundfilled the air. Barnaby cried, “I knowwhat I can do for you, Blessed Mother.Watch me!” He spread his thin rug onthe floor before the statue. Then he laidout his two sticks, his hoops, his balls, and his apples. Giving a deep bow, hebegan to leap and tumble in the air. Hejuggled the balls and apples in a greatrainbow of colors, behind his back and

under his feet. At last, half an hour andmany tumbles later, the little juggler col-lapsed at the feet of the statue. “Oh,sweet Lady, I have given you my bestperformance. I shall come here everyday and juggle for you and your Son!”

Barnaby spent many an hour tum-bling and somersaulting for the Motherand Child. Of course, the brothers beganto wonder what he was doing while theyprayed. When Christmas was but twodays away, Brother James decided to dis-cover what it was that Barnaby did inthe chapel by himself. He quietly fol-lowed the boy and peeked through acrack in the door. He was amazed bywhat he saw! There was Barnaby grin-ning from ear to ear, juggling merrily be-fore the statue.

“Why, this is scandalous!” exclaimedthe monk to himself. “While we aretending to our souls, this little fool is ca-pering about like a little goat in ourchapel! I must inform the Abbot!” Andhe did. The Abbot, however, was wiseman and never made ill judgments ofpeople without proof. “Now, now,” hesaid to Brother James, “do not acthastily. Let me see the boy for myself.Next time he begins his juggling, call mewithout telling anyone else.”

The next night was Christmas Eve.All the monks presented their gifts tothe Blessed Mother and the Infant Jesus, and Barnaby thought he had never seensuch a beautiful array! “Oh, sweetMother, how I wish I had something asexquisite to offer you.”

When the ceremonywas over and the monkshad returned to theircells, Barnaby stole softlyback to the chapel. Hethought himself alone, but there were two sets ofeyes following his everymove from behind theconfessional in the darkside of the chapel. Barn-aby laid out his rug andbowed low before thestatue. The Abbot andBrother James stared ashe tumbled merrily fromstep to step, standing firston his hands, then on onefoot, then on the other. Hedanced and juggled as he hadnever before done in his life, forthis night was the birthday of theChrist Child and he wanted to do hisbest for his Infant God.

Suddenly, the Abbot and the monkwatched in awe as a dazzling Lady de-scended daintily from the niche wherethe statue stood. Her robes shimmeredwith precious stones, diamonds andsapphires. The air around her vibratedwith the hum of angelic voices. She drewclose to the prostrate little juggler andwiped his brow with a silken handker-chief, then bent down and kissed it gen-tly. Before anyone could stir, shereturned to the niche above the steps.

On Christmas day the Father Abbotcalled for the little juggler. Barnaby

went to him thinking, “Surely he hasfound me out and is going to send meaway for tumbling in the chapel.” But,to his great surprise, the Abbot huggedhim and said: “Barnaby, my son, do youwish to stay here at the monasterywith us?” “Oh, yes, Sir!” answered theboy all a glow. “Then we want you tostay also. But from now on, you musttumble for Our Blessed Lady and theChrist Child openly and no longer insecret. I believe They like your tum-bling very well.” n

THE

REALMAN

If you can keep your head when all about you are losing theirs and blaming it on you,

If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you, but make allowance for their doubting too;

If you can wait and not be tired by waiting, or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,

Or being hated, don’t give way to hating…”—Borrowed from R. Kipling’s poem “If—”

This poem’s beginning delivers to the mind an important aspect ofwhat a man should be: secure but not arrogant, determined butnot proud, patient and not given to falsehoods.

But Real Manhood has become a concept of the past in our sad mod-ern age and such is a real tragedy. With the loss of manhood, a crucialaspect of the Divinity is gone from our planet; lost, vanished, and rele-gated to the category of the unimportant and not politically correct.

But some still long for the Real Man… at least real women do. Thenostalgia of the inherent values of a Real Man is still at times felt in theair by a few, and it is to these few this page is dedicated.

If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster and treat those two impostors just the same;

If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,

Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken, and stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:

If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,  or walk with Kings—nor lose the common touch,

If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you…

The Real Man is one who possesses a great sense of stabilitywithin and thus is able to communicate it to others and createaround him that same sense of the stable, calm, secure and good.

The Real Man knows how to remain above it all. He lives hislife based on principles and thus does not change direction with

each wind that blows. The Real Man knows that others will lookto him for security and direction and he takes it as his mission to give

it; he expects no earthly reward in return. It is his mission as a man. The Real Man is kind and patient with the good but firm and im-

placable with evil. He is not a fool and believes no lies and yet, never letshope die in his heart.

The Real Man is humble and thus acknowledges that he is nothingwithout the aid of a higher power. He bends his knees and prays. TheReal Man is thus pious. His notion of piety is not sentimental, but mil-itant. He was placed on the battlefield of life to aid the good against theevil forces and piety is where he obtains his internal strength.

The Real Man is therefore a friend of God and thus he is pure; hishero is none other than Jesus Christ, true Man and true God. The keyto the Real Man’s purity of body and soul is self-control. He knows hisworst enemy is within and not without. He knows he cannot win theexternal battle unless he first wins the internal one and that any alter-native is a piece of fiction.

The Real Man did exist and he can come to exist once again…When mankind has finally fallen on its knees and beaten its chest

with great compunction for its many sins, the Real Man will again makehis appearance and fathers will again be able to say to their sons,

“Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,   And—which is more—you’ll be a Man, my son!” n
