CODE (formerly known as the Canadian Organization for Development through Education) is Canada’s leading international literacy organization. CODE has been honoured by UNESCO, the Government of Canada and the International Reading Association for its work in education and literacy.

CODE currently works in Africa with education/literacy partners in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Malawi, Mali, Mozambique, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Tanzania to empower children to learn. In so doing, we deliver an essential, sustainable development solution that endures. CODE also has a program in Guyana. Our programs support libraries and teacher training as well as national and local book publishing in about 20 languages.

In Canada, Project Love is CODE’s award-winning program that encourages children to think globally, act locally, and make a difference. Along with receiving educational resources, Canadian students are also given the opportunity to assemble Project Love kits of school supplies that, along with a letter of correspondence, is sent to a child in a developing country. Since 2008, 12,656 Project Love kits have been assembled in the GTA by 13,667 participants from over 30 schools and community groups.

Our programs advance literacy in developing countries through professional teacher and librarian training, support for libraries and publishers, and by supplying books which are culturally, age and gender appropriate.

Vision:To support a sustainable literate environment

in the developing world.

Mission:To enable people to learn by developing partnerships that provide resources for learning, promote awareness

and understanding, and encourage self-reliance.

CODE’s ability to make real and lasting change is directly related to the generous support received from individuals, corporations, service groups and foundations that are committed to our overseas programs.

In 2010–2011, CODE supporters donated $2,034,868 to support literacy programming. CODE also is fortunate to be the ongoing recipient of in-kind support from North American book publishers: in 2010–2011 CODE shipped $4,576,936 worth of donated books overseas.

Public funds raised by CODE are leveraged at a rate of 3:1 by CIDA.

Help CODE improve the standard of learning for thousands of children in the developing world... and have a ball doing it!
