An Employee to RECognize!Meet UAB Campus Rec Employee and new alum Troxell Pautler. He just earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Community Health Education in December 2011 from UAB.

Troxell's passion for healthy living and exercise makes him a stand out employee at the Campus Rec! He has been a dedicated weight room supervisor since the fall of 2010 and has demonstrated very consistent customer service skills to all variety of patrons he encounters. Troxell also has helped with facility setups for special events on occasion. Troxell is the kind of employee that would fit well in most any employment setting.

Troxell is slated to marry his fiancée Jacqui in the summer of 2012. He enjoys wizards and dragons and is also a fan of fantasy books or self-improvement and life philosophy books. He is also a people person that enjoys learning, writing and helping. Troxell lives by the quote “Que Sera Sera."

Did you know? The NIRSA (National Intramural Recreational Sports Association) will be hosting its 2012 National Championships at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte from April 13-15. v UAB Intramurals offers our Intramural Basketball champions the opportunity to travel to Extramural Tournaments to play against other schools. We want to put our best up against the best competition around the country.

We are also offering a large variety of events and tournaments in the Spring. These events and tournaments include:

Table Tennis Ladder•Racquetball Challenge Ladder•Squash Challenge Ladder•Corn Hole Tournament•Tennis Singles/Doubles•Triathlon•Billiards Tournament•NCAA Tournament Picks•Disc Golf Tournament•Swim Meet•Badminton Challenge Ladder•

That's right! The people have spoken and due to an overwhelming demand, Badminton is in!

Diversify Your IM Sports Repertoire!During the spring semester UAB Intramural Sports will be rolling out a variety of Intramural sports for participants to partake in. We will be offering our traditional league sports: Basketball, Indoor Soccer, Kickball, Ultimate Frisbee, and Softball, as well as our newest addition, Indoor Flag Football!

I know what you’re thinking, are they allowed to offer two semesters of Flag Football!? Isn’t that too much of a good thing!? Well yes and no. We feel that Flag Football is something that the students, faculty, and staff at UAB just can’t get enough of. In order to make the experience different for returning Flag Football players, we have decided to move the game indoors to the gym.

To go along with playing on a smaller playing surface, we have tweaked some of the rules in order to accommodate competitive game play. The biggest difference between offering indoor versus outdoor is that Indoor Flag football will be played 5 on 5. Traditional Flag Football is played 7 on 7 but the playing field is much larger. We expect this 5 on 5 game of Flag Football to be faster paced with both teams finding the end zone more often.

It is essentially an arena brand style of football that should be fun to both play and watch! A complete list of rules will be coming soon, so be sure to continue checking out our intramural page on our website at www.uab.edu/campusreccenter so that you can study up on the league’s nuances.

Sink or Swim! Will a concrete canoe sink or float? When UAB Senior Civil Engineering majors are in charge, the answer is float... in a Blaze of Glory! And of course you know that UAB Campus Rec Aquatics Director Don Sanders would not anything sink in his pristine pool!

Daniel Brown, Matt Coe, Ethan Parker, Joe Phillips, and Paisley Marotta are ASCE (American Society of Civil Engineers) members preparing

for the Southeast Student Conference competition.

This test model, coined Blaze of Glory, weighs approximately 170 lbs and measures about eight feet in length.

These engineering m a s t e r m i n d s

started from scratch. After a lot of hard work, time, and personal funding, they are now focused on building the full-sized, 20 feet long concrete canoe in order to race in the competition.

The competition is March 22-24 in Tallahassee, Florida and more information can be found here: www.eng.fsu.edu/asce2012/competitions.php.

Good luck crew, and GO BLAZERS!

New Classes are Making a Splash! The Aqua Zumba class is turning into a tidal wave of success! The class which started on January 11, 2012 has maxed-out the provided space ( lap lanes 1 & 2 ) on both of its previous meetings and if the patron numbers continue to grow - a request for a third lap lane is being considered!

The Scuba Diving class is making bubbles, according to Mark Di Giorgio, Padi Master instructor; the numbers are good for a start-up class.

So if you are interested in getting your feet wet and learning to dance or dive in the water, check our UFit schedule online at www.uab.edu/campusreccenter and join us today!

Please keep in mind that the aquatics staff is able to accommodate special needs upon request, i.e. swim classes for females with a female instructor and the “water Joey,“ which is aquatic exercising for expectant moms - for more information please email or call Donald Sanders at [email protected] or 205-996-5037.

Keep it up and follow these helpful tips!Nutrition Tip: Pair your meal with a cup of fat-free or low-fat milk. They provide the same amount of calcium and other essential nutrients as whole milk, but less fat and calories. Don’t drink milk? Try soymilk (soy beverage) as your beverage or include fat-free or low-fat yogurt in your meal.

Courtesy: United States Department of Agriculture Center for Nutrition Policy and Promotion (June 2011).

Fitness Tip: Did you know that you spend the same amount of calories if you run 1 mile in 20 minutes or 1 mile in 5 minutes!! So it is distance what counts. If you are in a crunch with your time, do a shorter workout with higher intensity.

Training Tip: TO BURN FAT OFF YOUR MUSCLE, DO MULTIPLE SETS USING LIGHTER WEIGHTS AND HIGHER REPETITIIONS! Take minimum rest between sets in order to keep your heart rate up!!

Example: 10 pushups (or modified pushups on your knees) followed with 15 body weight squats would be one set. Do 3-5 sets with minimal rest in between sets.

You can also participate in one of these new UFit classes offered through March 18th:

Sun: Dance at 5pmM/W: Crunk at 6amTues: Water Tone & Walk at 6:30am - poolWed: Aqua Zumba at 5:30pm - poolThurs: Spin Class at 6amFri: Yoga-lates at 7:30am

The final week of weigh in’s will be the week of Mar. 12th-15th. Weigh in times are M/W from 5-7pm and T/Th from 11-1pm in the Wellness Suite, Rm. 170, of the recreation center. Individuals and teams of 2 and 3 people are competing to see who loses the greatest % of weight over a 9 week period. All participants must weigh in 3 times to be eligible for the grand prizes. Prizes will be given to the Overall Biggest Loser, the winning 2 & 3 person teams.

Tips!

Fitness/Wellness will be hosting an AFAA Group Exercise Certification workshop on April 7th from 8-6pm at the Rec Center. Go to afaa.com to register.
