From Fr. Nelson

9 February 2020

Dear Parishioners,

This past weekend we had Fr. Brennan visiting the parish and he tried to be present at all the Masses. He was happy to be here. Although he was in a frail condition he was determined to see and greet as many of us as his strength would allow. He feels very weak and he has gone back to have radiation therapy. We must continue praying for him especially when we meet as a group on the first Fridays of the month. We pray both for his recovery and for our sick and home-bound parishioners. “More things are wrought by prayer than this world dreams of.”

The parish office has been gifted with two volunteers. We have Karen Falk who has been doing this service for a month and you may have seen her if you came to the office on Thursdays and Fridays. Then we have Chris Furnari who many of you know. He helps out Mondays and Tuesdays. We thank them for their assistance and concern for our parish. Also at this time I would like to thank all our volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to the service of the people of God. In addition, I would like to thank a special group of volunteers: our Religious Education teachers. They are present on 24 Sundays to share their faith with the children of our parish. I must tell you that they must really love the kids and their faith to do this mission for our parish. The highest gift we can give to our kids is the gift of faith.

Being a deeply faith-filled community of believers that belong to a church that is based on the word and the sacraments, we find great joy in being present as a community for the Mass. We hear His word and partake of the Bread of Life. This leads us to be a community that thrives, creates and innovates. We thrive because of the Food that we eat at the weekly celebration. We thrive both as individuals and as a community. This leads us to have compassion for those who are hungering for the Bread of Life and have nobody to lead them to it. We need leaders who will lead our community in this direction. The Church of Holy Name of Mary needs to thrive by reaching out in every way possible to every person in our neighborhood assessing what they are thirsting for and to quench their thirst. We do have members who can do this and we also have the strength of the Holy Spirit to guide us through. The “Parish Alive” group is trying to implement this but we do need more members and volunteers who have a compassionate heart to reach out to the lost sheep and bring them home.

Yours in Christ,

Fr. Nelson Couto
