The Holy and Glorious Great Martyr Demetrius the Myroblite, and the Great Earthquake October 26

Demetrius was born in Salonica. His father was the military commander of Sa-lonica. Upon his death, the Emperor made Demetrius the military commander of Saloni-ca. He then commanded Demetrius to exterminate the Christians of Salonica which Demetrius refused to do, declaring that he was a Christian and denouncing the Emper-or’s idolatry. For this he was martyred. A healing myrrh began to flow from his body. A church was built over his relics. In 740 a terrifying and long-lasting earthquake struck Constantinople. The peo-ple entreated the Mother of God and St. Demetrius with great penitence, until God had mercy and earthquake ended.

PARISH COUNCIL MEETING UPDATE

The following items of note resulted from business discussed at the September 9, 2019 Parish Council meeting:

The Community Picnic was a success with over 250 people attending.

The Pavilion has been painted and the floor is being installed. Garage doors were ad-justed.

The Pavilion roof will need to be replaced soon, the Hall kitchen will need some minor repairs as well.

We have identified drivers for our church bus on Sundays to help those in need get to church.

There will be a Special General Assembly to address iconography on September 22nd 2019 in Church after services.

The church will begin compliance procedures for the Youth Safety Act. This includes background checks for all individuals working with children.

The Parish Council has identified four subcommittees within the council to help with the day to day functions of the church.

St Anthony The Great and The Shoe Maker

At some time, St. Anthony the Great thought to himself, “I wonder with whose spiritual achievements my spiritual life can be compared with”. God, however, in order to humble his thought revealed to him in a dream that superior to him was a shoe-maker who had a small store in the back streets of Alexandria. Once it was daybreak, the saint took his staff and headed off to the city. He wanted to meet in person this famed shoe-maker and see his virtues.

With great difficulty he discovered his store, sat down at the counter and began asking about his life.

The man was simple and didn’t even occur to him who this elderly monk was that had come so unexpectedly into his store querying him.

The man, while continuing to work and without taking his eyes off the shoes he was work-ing on replied gently; “Elder, I don’t know if I have ever done anything good. Every morning after waking up, I pray and then I start work. First, I think to myself how every person in this city, from the youngest to the oldest, will be saved, and only I will be condemned due to my countless transgressions. And in the evening when I go to sleep I have the same thoughts. St. Anthony rose with awe and embraced and kissed him and said emotively: “You, my brother, like a good merchant, have gained the priceless pearl (=humility) with-out toil. I have grown old in the desert, sweated and toiled, but have not reached your lev-el of humility!”

From the April 2019 Orthodox Observer…..

It’s Not Only Yiayia’s Philoptochos

We’re learning that the key to promoting membership is flexibility: Allow members to choose the projects that interest them, and allow them to meet at times convenient for their schedules. Don’t expect young women, who are busier than ever, to come to every meeting; em-brace new ideas, protocols and projects.

The Portland, Oregon Philoptochos chapter of Holy Trinity Church has perfected this concept, and over the past 50 years, has built its membership to over 140 members.

The chapter has six different circles, each named for a different woman from the Bible. Each circle has approximately 20-30 members and is part of the larger Philoptochos chapter.

Every circle meets at a time that is convenient for their members, and they work on projects that particularly interest their members.

One circle meets on Sunday after church because they can no longer drive at night; another circle only meets in the evenings so as not to conflict with work schedules.

Each circle attracts ladies with similar interests and at similar stages in their lives. One member from each Circle serves as liaison to the Philoptochos chapter board and

attends the monthly board meetings to share information. When the chapter holds a major fund-raiser, all of the circles pitch in and take a task.

They call these “oli mazi” projects. Each circle is responsible for fulfilling the responsibilities of Philoptochos for a month.

Examples include: parish coffee hours, passing trays, manning informational tables, etc. The Seraphima Circle is made up of women in their mid-20s through mid-30s. Their responsi-

bilities include the decorating of the Epitaphion for Good Friday services and decorating the church icons with flowers to celebrate various Feast days of the Church.

Recently, the Seraphima Circle asked members in other circles to teach them how to make the traditional Vasilopites.

What a beautiful way to bring generations together to expand our sisterhood and continue the traditions of our faith!

These faith-based circles have created bonds of love and deep friendship centered around Philoptochos.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and really take it in….we want all young ladies

to join us and thought this was a great way to let you know that we are open to new ideas in

which to interest you with. We are a great group of strong Orthodox women and want to

pass it down the line to you one day.

Blessings upon blessing to you all, Leigh Cortesis, secretary

Sunday School News from the Annunciation

Sunday School is officially underway! We have had a wonderful start to our 2019-2020 year. It seems like our teachers and students have really started to enjoy the first weeks of class. We would like to thank our teachers who have donated their time and talents to help educate our children. They were eager to get into their classrooms and to get to know the kids. This years’ theme is “Called to be Disciples.” Schedule for Liturgy and Sunday School:

10:00 am Liturgy Begins

11:00 am Youth proceeds to classes after Holy Communion

11:45 am Dismissal of Sunday school

Parents with students kindergarten age or younger are asked to proceed to the classrooms

for student pick up immediately following the sermon (but no earlier than 11:45 am).

Please remember that in order to participate in youth activities outside of Sunday School

(GOYA, Greek dance, etc.), a child must attend more than 55% of his or her classes. At-

tendance will be taken and must be consistent throughout the school year. Divine Liturgy

in another town can be counted towards attendance if the appropriate forms are completed.

If you have further questions about this, please contact the Sunday School Directors.
