It follows the original wording but leaves out some of the one-line comments at the end. They got their name because they frequently wore tam-o-shanter hats. In the early 60s at Bill Lowery's Studio in Atlanta, Georgia The Tams often encountered Tommy Roe (see under Rock ‘n’ Roll – Caveman). They were one of many R & B groups considered as purveyors of "beach" music, which was a special mix of R & B vocals oriented towards pop music and past Top 40 hits. The Tams had a major hit in the States with "What Kind of Fool (Do You Think I Am)" in 1964 and in England with "Hey Girl, Don't Bother Me" in 1971. Dutch Reissue LP: SILLY SONGS (1982) Hep HN 4591 12" 33rpm (Sd 2 – Bd 1) Notes: This a capella group first came into the spotlight with their performance of “At the Hop” at the Woodstock Festival in 1969. Ten years later, following the release of their extremely successful film, “Grease,” Sha Na Na had a regular television show from 1978 to 1981 and they were an important dynamo in the Rock ‘n’ Roll revival of the late 1970s in reaction to the insipid disco movement, which ruled at that time. This album dates to the end of that period. With their costumes and gestures the group was in many ways an over-the-top parody of the 1950s rock ‘n’ roll era, but they made an effort to perform faithful covers of classic rock songs. Santini explained their stage presence – “musically you’re going to hear – note for note – though not always – the songs of the period. We present them with a kind of vitality using dance movements and a lot of attitude that helps recreate the spirit of a concert from that generation, as opposed literally to what happened. For example, none of the groups whose music we do ever had big hand movements. They were all very small and subtle dance movements. What we do is take it to an extreme to show people the kind of fun in the music.” (Jones 1979) Bowzer added some comments – “we are a visual act to begin with and our approach to the oldies has always been to be faithful, to be authentic, to the best of our ability, not to rearrange, alter or change in any way the original records. With this music, the more you try to change it, the more you ‘kill’ it, in our estimation. Now this doesn’t cut much ‘wax,’ no pun intended, on records, because people can go out and buy the originals. Musically, in many cases, the originals really are better than what we can do or at least they are more directly expressive of the time that they were made than whatever we can come up with. So when you buy a Sha Na Na record, you lose a lot of the visual and the theatrical appeal of the group.” (Jones 1981) This photo shows (lt. to rt.) – Front row: Contardo, York, Ryan, Bauman; Second row: Greene, Simon, & Marcellino; and Back row: Baker & Powell. This version of the novelty song sticks pretty close to the original lyrics even using some of the same spoken closing lines. ELPS 4444 Spec: (All LPs) 12" 33rpm (Sd 2 – Bd 3) Notes: A disco version of this caveman classic, but the same familiar lyrics. This was just one of many rock numbers (New Wave, Indie, & Disco) used for the soundtrack of the 1984 film, “Bachelor Party.” This song was used for the "Cavers' Hop" at the Old Timers' Reunion in 1995 because, with its intense disco beat, it was considered to be the best arrangement for dancing at that time, not because it was considered the best version. Some people there felt that I should have played the original by The Hollywood Argyles. The producer here, Bob Gaudio, once played piano for the Royal Teens (see under Rock ‘n’ Roll – Caveman). Australian LP: THOROGOOD LIVE EMI Australia ST-240614 12" 33rpm (Sd 2 – Bd 1) Notes: In the early 1970s, George Thorogood formed a band, the Delaware Destroyers, with a high school friend, drummer Jeff Simon. With additional players they developed their own sound, a mixture of Chicago Blues and rock and roll. Eventually, they shortened the band's name to The Destroyers. On this live recording two of the regular band members are replaced: Hank Carter replaces Buddy Leach on sax and Steve Chrismar replaces Jim Suhler on rhythm guitar. This is a decent cover of the old Hollywood Argyles hit. The band gives it a heavy blues backup and George growls his way through the lyrics. QRS has issued the famous rock ‘n’ roll hit song for today’s fans and owners of a player piano. This is a modern piano roll released by the same piano roll company, QRS ("Quality, Reliability and Service") that issued a piano roll of the first Andrew Jenkins ballad, The Death of Floyd Collins, in 1925 (see under Country Music – Floyd Collins Ballads – Piano Rolls). In the States you could buy it through the QRS Website for $15. and the postage was reasonable, but now it is no longer available.
