Mary Advent is known as the season that prepares us for the coming of Jesus Christ. In our case, it is about the “second coming”. As such, there are a number of prominent figures that define this important season in our liturgical year. Among them is Isaiah, with his beautiful, poetic prophecies about the coming of the Messiah and thus the “messianic age”. Then there is John the Baptist, the final prophet, who seeks to prepare the world to receive its’ Sav-ior. He was stark and abrupt, living in the desert with nothing, simple in dress and fasting so as to be humble enough to recog-nize his role as announcing the good news about the Messiah, while asking people to repent to make ready the way.

Finally, there is Mary, the vessel of God’s plan to carry the Son of God in her womb. She is the feminine presence in the life of our church. She is seen as the perfect disciple in the writings of Vatican II. Our own archdiocese, and indeed our country, recognize her Immaculate Conception, which is, Mary being born without origi-nal sin. As the patronal feast of our country, thus the reason that this solemnity is moved to Monday, so as not to interrupt the 4 Sundays of Advent, but still properly celebrated. Despite the obli-gation being removed this year, we will celebrate our 3 Masses in the church like any holy day.

In addition, we are so happy to be placing a statue of Mary per-manently in the church. This is all due to the generosity of a sin-gle family who donated this hand carved work of art from Italy. It is a reminder to us all about this courageous young lady, who despite not understanding all that was happening to her and around her, said yes to God as the maidservant of the Lord. When Jesus was born, the Scriptures told us how she reflected on everything in her heart.

These two actions of sublimating our will to God’s will, as well as, deep reflection and prayer, are common to all who are called to discipleship, today that being you and me. It should be a source of deep comfort and an inspiration to have Mary present in our worship space.

So, I invite you to attend a special Mass when we unveil and bless this new statue. Please join us tonight, Sunday Dec. 8th at 7PM. We will pray the prayers of the Immaculate Concep-tion. May this be a visible sign of our desire to be the kind of disciple that Mary modeled for all of us.

Second Sunday of Advent

Today’s Readings First Reading He shall bring justice for the afflicted; the earth shall overflow with the knowledge of the LORD (Isaiah 11:1-10). Psalm Justice shall flourish in his time, and fullness of peace for ever (Psalm 72). Second Reading Glorify God by living in harmony with one another, welcoming each other as Christ welcomed you (Romans 15:4-9). Gospel Produce good fruit worthy of your baptism; repent, for the reign of God is near (Matthew 3:1-12). The English translation of the Psalm Responses from Lectionary for Mass (c) 1969, 1981, 1997, International Commission on English in the Liturgy Corporation. All rights reserved.

As the Sundays of Advent unfold the scriptures shift focus from the final coming of the Lord to his historical birth. Today’s scrip-tures blend the two. Isaiah’s disillusionment with the kings of his own day led him to envision an ideal king who would rule with divine approval and be led by divine wisdom. For centuries the Jewish people anticipated the arrival of that Messiah, who would usher in a blessed age when the whole world would finally dwell in justice and peace.

After centuries of such growing expectation, the preaching of John the Baptist about the imminent arrival of the Messiah could not help but provoke intense interest. The Baptist’s message about preparation for “the one who is coming” (Matthew 3:11) makes clear that Jesus is, in fact, the long-awaited one who is ushering in the new age foretold by Isaiah and all the prophets.

Please join us TONIGHT, Sunday December 8th - on the Eve of the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception -

for the unveiling of our new statue, Our Lady

“I am the Immaculate Conception”

In 1858, Our Lady appeared 18 times to a 14 year old French peasant girl, Saint Bernadette Soubirous.

The young girl repeatedly asked the beautiful woman her name and finally Mary responded,

“I am the Immaculate Conception”.

All are Welcome! Join us tonight in the Church from 7-8 PM. We will gather for Mass, prayer and a recitation of the Rosary.

Refreshments to follow.

Bambinelli Sunday Each year, on the Third Sunday of Advent, children gather with

their families in St. Peter’s Square for “Bambinelli Sunday”. Families bring with them the figure of the Christ Child

- the “Bambinelli” - from their family’s Nativity scene. During the Noontime Angelus prayer, the Pope blesses the

children and the figurines they have brought.

All are invited on December 15th to bring the Christ Child figurine from your home crèche for a blessing.

This will be done at the 10am mass only.

Blue Christmas Mass St Luke’s Church in HoHoKus will offer a special

“Longest Night” service on Friday, Dec. 20th at 7PM. Please join us in sharing and hearing prayers, scripture, and mu-sic that acknowledge that God’s presence is for those who mourn, for those who struggle, and that God’s Word comes to shine light into our darkness. For many, Christmas can be a painful time. It may be the first Christmas without a loved family member who has recently died; it may be a time that has always been difficult. The constant refrain on the radio/television, in shopping malls and churches, about the happiness of the season, may remind many people of what they have lost or have never had. The anguish of broken relationships, the insecurity of unemployment, the weari-ness of ill health, the pain of isolation – all these can make us feel very alone in the midst of the celebrating and spending. Our spir-its sink, as the days grow shorter. We need encouragement to live the days ahead of us. We need the space and time to acknowledge our sadness and concern; we need to know that we are not alone. Please join us, all are welcome.

Faith and Grief Luncheon

Open to all faiths, Faith & Grief Luncheons are opportunities for those mourning the loss of a loved one to gather together and be strengthened through sharing, scripture, prayer & reflection. In cooperation with Valley Hospice, CHCC offers these gatherings on the third Wednesday of the month and include a complimen-tary lunch. Faith & Grief is a ministry of compassion that provides an opportunity for people dealing with grief and loss to share a meal and talk with trained facilitators and others who are experi-encing the same issues. The next luncheon is Wednesday, Dec. 18th from 12noon - 1pm at the Christian Health Care Center Auditorium, 700 Mountain Ave., Wyckoff. Register at www.faithandgrief.org. Contact CHCC Pas-toral Care Dept. at 201-848-5839 for more info.

December 2019 Dear Fellow Parishioners: As the members of St. Catharine’s Finance Council, we are pleased to furnish you with the enclosed “Comparative Summary of Revenues and Expenses” for the fiscal year that ended on June 30, 2019. To ease comparison year over year, this summary includes data for revenue and expenses for Fiscal Year ’18 as well. These numbers speak for themselves, but we’d like to bring a few things to your attention. First and foremost, we see that we operated at a deficit last year, a loss of a bit more than $116,000. Our ordinary expenses remained fairly constant, rising about 4%, largely due to an increase in the assessments we paid to the Archdiocese. Our ordinary revenues, however, didn’t keep pace with this increase in our expenses and, in fact, declined about 3%. The other significant change comes with our “restricted gifts and bequests,” where we had a decline, year over year, of approximately $70,000. These gifts and bequests are most welcome, and, in years past, have covered the shortfall between ordinary revenue and ordinary expenses. Yet as we’ve emphasized in our previous reports, these special gifts and bequests (from a parishioner’s will, for example) are by their very nature irregular, unpredictable, and can vary dramatically over time, as they did this year compared to last, and last year compared to the year before. We can’t assume that we’ll have this income in meaningful amounts every year. The conclusion we draw from all this is that we must increase our ordinary revenues - the dollars that go in the basket on Sunday and on Christmas and Easter, or that are contributed through Faith Direct. Those revenues have remained basically flat for the last decade, and we’ve reached the point where the inexorable climb in ordinary expenses over those same years gives rise to a significant operating deficit such as we now have. As we’ve heard from the pulpit the past few weeks, we now risk losing programs that have long made our parish life as distinctive and productive as it is. There is a silver lining here. We’ve studied our situation closely and have concluded that if each of our active households increases its weekly donation by as little as $5.00, we can eliminate our deficit and ensure that we can fund our operating expenses. Our situation will further improve if we all make our donations on line through Faith Direct, as we can then predict, and enjoy, reliable income. Many thanks for all you do for St. Catharine. Respectfully, Michele Theuerkauf Ann Boyle Bill Hansen Bob Hemmer Dennis Looney Bob Stickles Mary Ann Galati (Trustee) Marty Petraitis (Trustee) Fr. Tom
