We had a great meeting on Monday night. Several members were back at the club after either leave of absence or illness. Again welcome back Gavin, Steve, Peter and Lin.

Also welcome again to Jo. A very special welcome to Anupam and Philip. It was a pleasure having you at our meeting, we hope to see you at many more.

Our Guest Speaker was John Bowler. I won't go into any detail here as I am sure Cherie will be sharing some information about his presentation to us.

We're off up to Karlkurla Park on

Sunday morning to assist KBULG with propagating some more cuttings. Our last effort saw 2600 cuttings done. Boulder and Hannans Clubs have been invited to join us; so it will be a great opportunity for fellowship with our fellow Rotarians.

We're starting at 8am for a couple of hours so those who are heading to the races can go home and freshen up for the afternoon. Those who aren't going to the races will head off to Monty's for a coffee (and maybe cake) when we finish.

Thank you to members who purchased tickets in the Climb for a Smile Raffle. Fingers crossed one of the prizes will come our way. At this

stage it is a good opportunity to wish all those participating in the event this Sunday all the very best. We will be thinking of you.

Monday 20 October we will be having a tour of the Kalgoorlie Courthouse. Details are to be finalised in the coming week. Boulder and Hannans club members have been invited to join us.

Plans are well in hand for the visit to the Clubs by personnel from St Jude's School in Tanzania. As I have mentioned this is a registered Rotary Australian World Community Service project (RAWCS).

A joint meeting will be held on Tuesday 21 October with Boulder Club holding their regular meeting with our Club, Hannans and interested members of the public attending. On Wednesday morning I will be taking them to East Kambalda School and then to O'Connor Primary School. Both these schools fund teachers in the School of St Jude. The team will then fly back to Perth on Wednesday evening.

A gentle reminder to members that Annual Dues are now well overdue. If you have not paid yet please make arrangements to do so as soon as possible. If you haven't

received your invoice yet please talk with Gavin.

Enjoy the rest of your week. I know I will especially at the Robbie Williams concert Thursday night with Cherie and my daughter Denyse.

Continue to Light up Rotary.

From President Esther ...

Our very interesting guest speaker on Monday 8 September was John Bowler.

While taking notes during John’s talk it occurred to me that it might be easier to list what he HASN’T been involved in, rather than what he HAS been involved in!

To say that John has made a contribution to the Goldfields and Western Australia is a gross understatement.

John was a member of the WA Legislative Assembly for 12 years, from 2001 to 2013. First as the member for Eyre, then as the member for Murchison-Eyre after boundary changes. During this time John was responsible for several difference ministries and portfolios.

John spoke about so many different organisations that he has been involved in locally that I was able to make a list only without really being able to flesh them all out with details.

Australian Prospectors and Miners Hall of Fame

Goldfields Sporting Hall of Fame

Goldfields Giants (basketball)

Olympians (basketball)

Goldfields-Esperance Development Commission (Deputy Chair)

Goldfields Miners Memorial Wall (Chair)

Re-enactment of the Goldfields First Troops Memorial March

SOS - Save Our School (WASM)

Discover the Round (Kalgoorlie Race Round)

John attributed his ability to maintain his commitment to the Goldfields while being a politician to the quality of his staff. When asked about the one thing that he is most proud of during his time in politics, John stated that Gay Reform in 2002 topped his list. This involved decriminalising gay behaviour Western Australia.

John is still involved with most of the organisations listed at the left and is kept busy by his sons and their families, including two grandchildren, Jacob and Sophie.

We could have listened to John for hours, but alas the meeting does have to end; so John was given a vote of thanks by Gloria Moyle, on behalf of President Esther and the members and guests present.

What a great meeting on 8 September! As President Esther has already mentioned, we welcome back some members we haven’t seen for a while and it was great to see their faces around the table again.

We also had three guests at the meeting who have shown an interest in Rotary. It was lovely to see Jo again and to meet Philip and Anupam. Also lovely to have Rebekah Moyle join us again so she could be with her Mum, Gloria, on her birthday.

It was decided that the Retravision sausage sizzle scheduled for Saturday 13 September would be postponed due to member unavailability. President Esther reminded us all that Climb for a Smile was taking place on Sunday 14 September for those who may be in Perth. Also on 14 September, the next KBULG propagation day, there won’t be a barbecue after this one.

Birthday girl, Gloria, was sergeant for the meeting and we had some great fines:

Peter, Gavin, Lin and Stephen - welcome back!

Gavin, Esther, Lin, Charmaine and Peter - no badge

Gavin & Jo - Dockers’ supporters

Peter - Swans’ supporter

Cherie - Cats’ supporter

John Bowler bought the box and told an old, but still interesting story, about member Cherie and a wrong number.

Peter bought the box and fined Gloria for her team’s success at the recent Business Awards

Cherie bought the box to brag about her youngest son, Tom, and his recent soccer successes.

SPEAKING UP FOR ROTARY YOUTH LEADERSHIP AWARDS Sixteen years ago, as a student at Cardinal Heights Middle School in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada, I received an award from the local Rotary club at my graduation. I didn’t know what Rotary was or even why I had received the award. Time went by and it was forgotten at the bottom of some boxes packed away.

Eight years later, I was sponsored to go to a Rotary Youth Leadership Awards event in my district. This life-changing week and the support from Rotary throughout my life has convinced me that this organization is full of amazing people that can really change the world for the better.

Starting the week at RYLA with a group of strangers that eventually become some of your closest friends still astonishes me every year we run the program. The Speak-ups are by far the best activity during the week. Each participant has five minutes to talk about a defining moment in their lives. It is always the most dreaded activity at first, but the most valued by the time we get to the end of the week.

Today, I’m proud to be a member of the Rotary E-Club of Southern Ontario, Canada & Western New York in District 7090, marking my first anniversary on 11 July. I serve as the youth service chair for my club and district, striving to make the same change in future generations that Rotary has made in me. Thank you Rotary.

Classifications

Did you ever wonder why Rotary has classifications? What are classifications supposed to represent? Who and what factors determine what classifications a club may have? Here are answers to some of the most frequently asked questions that arise regarding classifications, taken from the most authoritative, written sources available from Rotary International.

Why does Rotary have classifications?

Rotary uses a classification system to establish and maintain a vibrant cross-section or representation of the community's business, vocational, and professional interests among members and to develop a pool of resources and expertise to successfully implement service projects. This system is based on the founders' paradigm of choosing cross-representation of each business, profession, and institution within a community. A classification describes either the principal business or the professional service of the organization that the Rotarian works for or the Rotarian's own activity within the organization.

Does Rotary International maintain a list of classifications?

RI does not maintain a general list of classifications. Due to the ever-changing landscape of professional work and the unique commercial environments in which Rotary clubs are located, Rotary no longer keeps a standard list of classifications on file. Clubs are encouraged to create their own classification lists by using their local Yellow Pages, chamber of commerce, or other business directories. Classifications aren't rigid and can reflect the many different types of professions and positions that exist in industries. One example would be the classification of lawyer/barrister; this standard classification can be broken down into criminal law, tax law, or intellectual property law.

What are the occupational codes, and how do they differ from classifications?

Rotary International's occupational codes were created some years ago in the event that Rotary found reason to research the industries represented in its membership. These industries are also used when determining the makeup of RI committees. These broad industry titles should in no way be confused with classifications. Rotary International no longer tracks occupational codes.

Should a club deny membership to a transferring or former Rotary based on a classification limitation?

The classification of a transferring or former member of a club shall not preclude election to active membership even if the election results in club membership temporarily exceeding the classification limits.

What limitations, if any, exist on the election of a member to a classification that is already held by another member?

The club shall not elect a person to active membership from a

classification if the club already has five or more members from that classification, unless the club has more than 50 members, in which case the club may elect a person to active membership in a classification so long as it will not result in the classification making up more than 10 percent of the club's active membership.

What classification does a retired person hold?

Retired persons inducted into active membership in a Rotary club shall use their former profession as their classification, but this will not be counted towards the club's limit of members in a single classification. Club classification rosters shall not include retired Rotarians.

Do Honorary Members hold classifications?

Honorary members do not hold classifications, but shall be entitled to attend all meetings and enjoy all the other privileges of the club.

How broadly are clubs encouraged to interpret classifications?

While adherence to the classification system is desirable, the Rotary International Board of Directors has agreed that each Rotary club should consider carefully the classification practice and broaden the interpretation of classifications where necessary to meet the modern business and professional environment.

What is a classification survey, and how can I find out what classifications are "open" in the club?

A systematically prepared list of classifications is the logical basis for club growth. RI does not maintain a general list of classifications. To identify relevant business and professional practices within a community, clubs are encouraged to conduct a thorough classification survey. Surveys act as a basis for developing and aggressively undertaking specific, ongoing plans for building and strengthening club membership in order to serve more effectively in all areas of activity. The classification committee of the club is responsible for developing and maintaining an up-to-date classification survey of the community in which the Rotary club is located. Clubs should maintain and use up-to-date classification surveys to develop and strengthen club membership by identifying and recruiting qualified members to classifications that are open. While the club's classification committee compiles the classification survey, it is the club's membership committee and board that reviews and determines the classification of all prospective members.

What should the classification survey and the membership of the club reflect?

A club should have in its membership a representative of every recognized business or professional activity in the community insofar as it is possible to obtain such representation in conformity with the principles laid down in the RI constitution, article 5 and the standard Rotary club constitution, article 6. Clubs are encouraged to review the demographics of an area to verify that all respective segments of the population are represented within its membership.
