Club Bulletin - Issue 19 Monday 9 December 2013 Thank you all for your enthusiasm and input in to the Club Forum last week. We went well over time and, for that, I apologise. We did not manage to cover all that we needed to so this week we will do Club Forum Part 2! Friday night sees some of our members at the Goldfields Repertory Club to enjoy their famous Christmas Show. This is always a great night out and an opportunity for members to meet in a Social setting. Sunday we are off to Hammond Park to cook for the Paddington Christmas party. This should be a fun afternoon. Thank you in advance to those who are able to assist at this busy time of the year. Monday 16 December is our last meeting for 2013. This meeting will take on a festive theme. We have invited guests who have supported us throughout the year and will be presenting Certificates of Appreciation to those able to attend. The night is a Family night so please bring along your family. Don't forget to let Peter know how many will be with you so adequate meals can be catered for. Bring along a small non gender type gift valued at $10 and also gifts to cover any guests you are bringing along. The gifts will be distributed like a lucky dip! Monday night I mentioned the TCF Ormoc Village Sewing Centres in the Philippines who suffered devastation through Typhoon Yolanda. The Belmont BEC is seeking donations to assist them to rebuild the Centre. I have listed below the types of items they are seeking. If you can assist bring along to the meetings over the next two Mondays. George and I are driving to Perth on 19 December and will deliver them. Portfolio Update:

Membership Definition of Rotary

How do you describe the organisation called “Rotary”? There are so many characteristics of a Rotary club as well as the activities of a million Rotarians. There are the features of service, internationality, fellowship, classifications of each vocation, development of goodwill and world understanding, the emphasis of high ethical standards, concern for other people, and many more.

In 1976, the Rotary International Board of Directors was interested in creating a concise definition of the fundamental aspects of Rotary. They turned to the three men who were then serving on RI’s Public Relations Committee and requested that a one-sentence definition of Rotary be prepared. After numerous drafts, the committee presented this definition, which has been used ever since in various Rotary publications:

“Rotary is an organization of business and professional persons united worldwide who provide humanitarian service, encourage high ethical standards in all vocations, and help build goodwill and peace in the world.”

Those 31 words are worth remembering when someone asks, “What is a Rotary club?”

Monday 2 December Our meeting on 2 December 2013 was a Club Forum.

It was great to get an overall update from President Esther and for all of the portfolios from each of the Directors.

We had a lot of laughs and a lot of fun and fellowship, rounded off by Sergeant James and his Fines session.

We’ve got lots of things to look forward to in the coming months with the Great Aussie Breakfast on Australia Day, another “Introduction to Rotary” function, Battle of the Brains Quiz Night, Vocational meetings, guest speakers and lots more.

“Ormoc City in Leyte Province was among the hardest areas hit by the Typhoon, along with Dulag, Tolasa, and Tacloban City, leaving over 10,000 who have died in the region. Ormoc Rep. Lucy Torrez-Gomez told ABS-CBN that “there is not a single home in Ormoc that is not severely damaged.” Ondo Codilla, Mayor of Ormoc City, says the damage is “severe.” “The roofs of most houses have been blown off, majority of houses in coastal barangays have been wiped out, roads are impassable, power and communication lines are mostly out, and so many are in dire need of relief,”.

BACKGROUND ON TCF ORMOC AND TCF ESVU PROJECT

The Textile, Clothing and Footwear Resource Centre of WA (TCFWA), MY Fashion Incubator, BPW Business Incubator and BPW Belmont are calling for donations to assist with the TCF Ormoc, Philippines community village sewing project.

This innovative project provides opportunities to 29 village sewing centres with 250 women and men that live in Leyte Province, regional Philippines to expand their small sewing-related business to generate income and assist additional village sewing centres to start. The TCF Ormoc Project has also expanded to include a TCF Centre of Entrepreneurship at the local ESVU University, we are now calling for donated reference materials for the sewing training courses, including books on design, patternmaking, textiles, crafts, etc. are much needed.

TCFWA/TCF Global Manager, Carol Hanlon, also volunteers to visit Ormoc to give business workshops and assist with Ormoc Fashion Festival now in its 3rd year. If you would like to volunteer your time to visit Ormoc and share your skills and talents please email [email protected]

Belmont BPW accepted a global award for the Ormoc Sewing project at the BPW International Congress in Helsinki, Finland, 2011. Over 340 climbers took the challenge and raced up the tower at 108 St Georges Terrace on Sunday 13 October in the third Climb for a Smile.

The quickest climber ascended the 50 floors in just six minutes and twenty nine seconds....just under 8 seconds per floor!!

Whilst the compeiton was tough up the stairs, the real winners were the causes that were the beneficiaries from the day, which shared in over $55,000 worth of funds, including Interplast, the Rotary WA Cordblood Bank and Rotary’s End Polio Now campaign.

Congratulations to the Rotary Club of Kenwick on another successful event.

A Letter from Mike Greenslade

November has been a momentous month for ShelterBox. Whilst we were responding to an earthquake in the Philippines, the country was struck by the strongest storm ever recorded. Super Typhoon Haiyan left an estimated10,000 people dead and hundreds of thousands in desperate need of shelter.

ShelterBox responded immediately, dispatching more SRTs to the area, along with aid, pre-positioned in the Philippines and Dubai, whilst volunteers at HQ packed boxes. An international "Typhoon Haiyan Emergency Appeal" was launched.

ShelterBox Australia set a fundraising target of $500,000. In an amazing outpouring of public generosity, in just 3 weeks we broke through this target.

With the help of Rotary, individuals, and charitable foundations we have raised over $510,000 .... and the fund is still growing! Obviously, the need is huge and the more donations we receive, the more families we'll able to help. We have since raised the bar to $750,000.

To all those that have donated, a big thank you! Your generosity will have a huge positive impact on families in desperate need. Stay tuned to the website for deployment updates.

This months quote comes from Oscar Wilde, “The smallest act of kindness is worth more than the grandest intention"

Thanks for your continued support.

Mike ShelterBox

Potable Water Project To help provide potable water to the Rosario National High School and surrounding communities.

The scarcity of potable water, particularly the coastal town of Rosario, has been a perennial problem for one of our adopted schools, Rosario National High School (RNHS) & its community. Students & local residents have to manually pump salty water from dilapidated shallow wells to be used only for washing & cleaning. Potable water has to be purchased from nearby water refilling stations.

Water related diseases are rampant in the community. Through the initiative of Rotary Club of Cavite Export Processing Zone (RC CEPZ), a Potable Water Project aims to provide clean & potable water through a purification water system to benefit the RNHS populace & its community. Our match club in Korea, Rotary Club of Icheon West, District 3600-Korea has partnered with us to install a water station with a filtration system to make the water potable. The two water stations built are still operational as of today (November 20, 2013) with the help of the Rotary Community Corps organized in the schools.
