High-precision horizontal (R-axis) armThe straightness of the R-axis is greatly affected by the rigidity ofthe horizontal arm and the frame supporting the arm. TheMitutoyo arm has been designed to ensure the highest possiblerigidity through FEM structural analysis and the simulation oflocus at the stylus tip of a driven arm. The use of ceramicmaterial, improved two-dimensional moment through amodified cross-section, and other new technologies haveachieved a horizontal arm straightness of 0.5µm/200mm in theRA-H5000 Series.

Using FEM analysis to design a bodybaseThe body base is the foundation that supports the turntable, vertical column, horizontal arm and workpiece undermeasurement. The base needs to be extremely rigid in order tocombine these components into an instrument that can achievethe required accuracy. Mitutoyo created its new base byapplying the results of the FEM (Finite-Element Method)structural analysis, in which we simulated the distribution ofstress throughout the base. The RA-H5000's highly rigid baseexhibits little flexure as a result of load fluctuation duringmeasurement and movement. The base design also limits to anextraordinarily minute degree the adverse effects on parallelismbetween the table's rotating axis and the vertical column, thusensuring the greatest possible accuracy of measurement.

Extremely precise vertical column forcylindricity/straightness measurementThe vertical slider is driven up and down by a precision ballscrew along the column-guide surface, which is precision-finished. This slider has been designed with consideration forthe center of gravity during movement, virtually eliminating theeffect that the moment of inertia might otherwise have onaccuracy. Other design features include a proprietary run-outeliminator that removes minute run-outs during movement, anda counterbalance system featuring air cylinders. Thus the RA-H5000 Series models have the benefit of a high-accuracycolumn with a straightness of 0.05µm/100mm (within anarrow range).

Accuracy compensation function(Option)Measured data generally includes various error factors, one ofwhich is mechanical error (rotational accuracy and straightness)in the instrument itself. But the RA-H5000 Series has achievedthe highest level of mechanical accuracy, and we at Mitutoyobelieve it presents no problem in the evaluation of standardworkpieces. However, when measuring a precision workpiecethat requires an accuracy level equivalent to or greater than themeasuring accuracy of the instrument, the mechanical errorinherent in the instrument itself can be digitally compensatedfrom the measurement data, thereby achieving to a workpieceshape that's much closer to a true value.

Highly accurate table rotation due tothe high-performance air bearingThe RA-H5000 Series incorporates a turntable suspended by ahigh-precision air bearing. Mitutoyo employs "complexrestrictor" method for the air bearing, which are known for theirsuperior rigidity and uniform pressure distribution. Theturntable's rotational accuracy of (0.02+6H/10000)µm—thehighest in the world—has been achieved by improving theaccuracy of the rotor, stator and other components for agreater air-bearing effect, and also by optimizing the orifice andgrooves. Moreover, the capacity for load mass has beenincreased by as much as 30 percent over previous models, thereby permitting the measurement of heavier objects.

High-speed automatic centering andlevelingAll adjustment axes of the turntable incorporate Mitutoyo's high-accuracy linear scales, which minimizes positioning error duringtable adjustment and contributes to high-speed automaticcentering and leveling of the workpiece. This facilitatessubstantial reductions in overall measurement time, startingfrom the setting of the workpiece and ending with the displayof results. This automatic system even operates whenmeasuring notched workpiece.

Wide measuring range due toautomatic horizontal R-axis armdisplacementIncorporated with a precision linear scale, the horizontal armautomatically moves during rotating workpiece measurementso that the probe stylus can keep tracking the surface of aworkpiece. Otherwise, the displacement in roundness/cylindricity or the amount of taper that measurable through avertical motion would result in a measurement over range(maximum R-axis following range: ±5mm (±.2")).

Spiral measurementCylindricity and flatness can be measured in a spiral motion, combining table rotation and the rectilinear motions of thevertical column and horizontal arm. One single measurementaccomplishes intermittent measurements over multiple cross-sections, and the measurement data is saved continuously.Compared to the conventional measurement by sectioning, themeasurement time is greatly reduced while permitting detectionof flaws on the circumference.

Automatic positioning function for theturntableThis function allows the turntable to be rotated over a desiredrange, thereby permitting automatic rectilinear measurement ofa cylindrical workpiece at a predetermined position.

ROUNDNESS (LSC/MZC/MIC/MCC)The roundness (or out ofroundness) of a workpiece isdefined as the departure of thetraced/modified profile from ageometric true circle. To assess the round-ness a reference circle (LSC/MZC/MIC/MCC)is determined and the measured profile datais enclosed with two circles concentric to thereference circle. The radial separation of thetwo circles (Rmax - Rmin) is the roundness ofthe measured workpiece.

LSC (least squares mean circle)A geometric circle determined so that thesum of the squares of the distance betweenit and the measured profile of a workpiece isminimized.

MIC (maximum inscribed circle)Largest circle that can be fitted inside themeasured profile of a hole.

MCC (minimum circumscribed circle)Smallest circle that can be fitted around themeasured profile of a shaft.

MZC (minimum zone circle)Two concentric circles enclosing themeasured profile and having a minimaldifference in radius values.

ROUNDTEST TERMINOLOGY

Controlling roundness is becoming more and more vital in various industries for improved performance andextended durability of products. Rotating shafts that are required to rotate smoothly, rollers that arerequired to provide a constant feed, and pressure cylinders that are required to be air-tight—all require strictroundness control through precision measurement. Mitutoyo's Roundtest Series is the most advanced meansof measuring/analyzing roundness and cylindricity of cylindrical forms. It precisely measures the inside oroutside of a cylindrical part, using the most advanced technologies, and displays various measuringfeatures, including roundness, cylindricity, flatness, parallelism, run-out, etc.

FLATNESSFlatness is defined as thedeviation of a plane from ageometrical plane. Todetermine the deviation, first determine thereference plane from the measured data(vertical displacement of the circumference). The flatness is determined from the distancebetween the two planes that are parallel tothe reference plane and that enclose themeasured data.

If roundness is assessed based on theLSC, the following data can beobtained from the calculation usingradius R0 of the reference circle.Peak height: Maximum deviation(Rmax - R0) of the measured profile thatprojects outside (positive) the referencecircle.Valley depth: Maximum deviation(R0 - Rmin) of the measured profile thatprojects inside (negative) the referencecircle.Mean roundness: The arithmeticalmean of the absolute values of thedeviation of the measured profile fromthe reference circle.Peak count: Number of peaks thatare outside the reference circle.

The Roundtest RA-H5000Series can also measurethe flatness of the surfaceof a workpiece in a desiredrange including multiplecircumferences. The flatness is the maximumvalue of all data in the range.

PARALLELISMParallelism is defined as"where two planes aredesigned to be parallel, thedeviation of an objectiveplane from a geometricalplane which is made at the position of theobjective plane and is parallel to the datumplane as selected so from the two planecomponents". To assess the deviation, firstdetermine the datum plane for each planecomponent from the measured data (verticaldisplacement of the circumference). Selectone of the datum planes as a referenceplane and provide two planes that areparallel to the reference plane and thatbound the other datum plane. The parallel-ism is the distance between these boundingplanes.

The Roundtest RA-H5000Series can also measurethe parallelism of the twoplanes of a workpiece ina desired range includingmultiple circumferences. The parallelism is the maximum value of alldata in the range.

CONCENTRICITYConcentricity is thedeviation of the centers oftwo reference circles determined from thetwo circular features of a cylindricalworkpiece in the same plane and squareagainst the rotation axis. To determine theconcentricity, obtain the roundness of eachcircle, and double the distance between thecenters of the two reference circles.

COAXIALITYSuppose that a workpiececonsists of cylinders of differentradii, as with a cam shaft.Coaxiality is defined as thedeviation of the center of onesectional circle of one cylinder, from thedatum axis, which is determined as thecenter axis of the other cylinder. To assessthe deviation, set the center axis of onecylinder as the datum axis, then assess theroundness of a section on the other cylinder. The coaxiality is double the distancebetween this center and the datum axis.

The Roundtest RA-H5000Series can also measurethe coaxiality of the othercylinder itself to the datumaxis totally. The coaxiality isdouble the maximum distance between theaxis of the cylinder and the datum axis in adesired range L.

THICKNESSDEVIATIONThe Roundtest can assessthe thickness deviation of a workpieceradially or vertically. The wall (radial)thickness deviation of a cylindricalworkpiece, such as a doughnut, can bemeasured by logging the circumferencedata of inside and outside circles that are inthe same plane. The thickness deviation isdefined as the maximum form deviation(maximum thickness - minimum thickness) ofthe wall.

The vertical thicknessdeviation of a disk or aflange, in the same way,can be measured bylogging the circumferencedata of upside and underside circles that arein the same radius.

CYLINDRICITY(MINIMUM ZONECYLINDRICITY)Cylindricity is defined as thedeviation of a cylindrical formfrom a geometrically true cylinder. To assessthe cylindricity of a cylinder, several sectionsare measured to determine a reference axisusing the minimum zone circle method, then all the measured data are enclosedbetween two datum cylinders which arecoaxial to the reference axis. The cylindricityis the difference of radius values (Rmax -Rmin) of the two cylinders.

SQUARENESSSquareness can beobtained with axis referenceor plane reference. To assess the squareness ofa plane against thereference axis, first log the measurementdata on the objective plane, as well as ontwo sections of the cylinder, excluding theobjective plane. Using these two sectionsdetermine the datum axis with an appropri-ate reference circle. The squareness isdetermined from the distance between thetwo geometrical planes that are squareagainst the datum axis and that enclose theobjective plane data.

To assess the squarenessof a cylinder against thereference plane, first setthe datum plane with anappropriate referencecircle, and from it, createtwo geometrical lines square against to theplane. Obtain the axis from two sections ofthe objective cylinder so that it passesthrough the center of each measuredsection. The squareness is determined fromthe distance between the two additionallines and that enclose the obtained axis.

SIMPLIFIED CYLINDRICITYSimplified cylindricity is defined as thealmost same way as the cylindricity. Toassess the simplified cylindricity of a cylinder, several sections are measured and the upperand the lower sections of them are extractedto determine a reference axis using anappropriate reference circle, then all themeasured data are enclosed between twodatum cylinders which are coaxial to thereference axis. The simplified cylindricity isthe difference of radius values of the twocylinders.

MEAN CYLINDRICITYTo assess the mean cylindricity of acylinder, several sections are measured andthe arithmetical mean circles are obtainedfrom them. Desired two circles are extractedto determine a reference axis, then all themean circles are enclosed between twodatum cylinders which are coaxial to thereference axis. The mean cylindricity is thedifference of radius values of the twocylinders.

RADIUS VARIATIONThe radius variation of atapered cylinder can bemeasured with the Roundtest. To do this the Roundtestdetermines two reference circles at twodesired sections, then calculates thedifference in the radius of two referencecircle.

CIRCULAR RUN-OUTBy preliminarily determiningthe reference axis of acylinder, the Roundtest canmeasure the radial or axialcircular run-out of thecylinder (i.e. the maximumvariation of the radius ifmeasured from thereference axis to thecircumference).

TOTAL RUN-OUTThe Roundtest doesn't onlymeasure the circular run-out, but also the radial oraxial total run-out of thecylindrical workpiece bytracing multiple crosssections.

DIAMETERMEASUREMENTThe Roundtest can determine aworkpiece diameter to a highdegree of accuracy by using thefunction to compare themeasured data with the diameter of thereference circle, which has been determinedwith the master workpiece using the leastsquares method.

SPIRALMEASUREMENTThe Roundtest RA-H5000 Serieshas a spiral-scanning function bywhich the cylindricity can beassessed with one measuringsequence. The surface of the cylinder istraced by spiral scanning, instead of tracingmultiple circular sections on the cylinder. This completes the cylindricity measurementin minutes. (If the cylindricity is assessed bythe spiral measurement function, thereference axis is determined based on theleast squares circle.)

STRAIGHTNESS(RECTILINEARMEASUREMENT)Straightness is defined as thedistance between two geometri-cal lines which are parallel to the leastsquares mean line of the traced profile of aworkpiece and bound the profile.

SLOPE(RECTILINEARMEASUREMENT)Slope is defined as the distance betweentwo geometrical lines which are parallel tothe rectilinear motion of the Z-axis column(when performing a vertical measurement)or the R-axis arm (when performing ahorizontal measurement) of the Roundtestand bound the traced profile of a workpiece

ECCENTRICITY OF THEWORKPIECE (OUT OF THEROTATING CENTER)The Roundtest can display the location of anoff-centered workpiece on the turntablefrom the rotating center as the values ofeccentricity coordinates, distance, andeccentricity angle.

ROUGHNESS COMPONENTREDUCTIONGenerally, in roundness measurement, theroughness components included in themeasured profile are removed so that thewaviness data can be used for formevaluation. The rate of roughness compo-nent elimination (= cut-off value) is usuallyexpressed in "undulation per revolution". Forexample, a 15 upr low-pass filter will removepeak and valley components which appearmore than 15 times per revolution.

NOTCHED WORKPIECEMEASUREMENTEven on a notched workpiece the correctroundness can be obtained by setting theeffective data range beforehandand eliminating the abnormalrange value.

CENTERING OF THEWORKPIECEIf a cylindrical workpiece is not correctlycentered on the turntable, the resultantmeasurement values may vary significantlyand may greatly exceed the measuringrange. To avoid this problem, centering theworkpiece axis with the axis of table rotationis essential.

LEVELING OF THEWORKPIECEIf the axis of the cylinder being measured isnot perpendicular, the locus of points tracedby the stylus tip will result in an ellipse. Toavoid this problem and achieve accuratemeasurements, leveling the workpiece isessential.

PARTIAL CIRCLEMEASUREMENTIf a workpiece cannot be measured byphysically rotating it by a full-turn due tosome obstruction (projection), segments ofthe circumference can be measured in orderto evaluate the cylindrical form. Thismeasurement is called "partial circlemeasurement".

TAPER RATIO(RECTILINEARMEASUREMENT)Taper ratio is defined asthe inclination differenceper unit length L of two contour linesagainst the datum axis. The contour linesshould be measured on two sides which areopposite each other and have the sameevaluation length L on a conical workpiece.
