Prayer During An Epidemic
Lord Jesus, Please hear our pleas, our Good Shep-herd and Divine Physician. We implore your mercy in the wake of an outbreak of serious illness and disease. Please guide our efforts to prevent contagion and make preparations to care for those most vulnerable. Please assist all professionals and volunteers who work to eradicate the epidemic now spreading. May our actions be marked by your steadfast love and selfless service and never by panic or fear. Please bestow your comfort and healing to the sick, sustain and strengthen them by your grace. May they know your closeness as they carry the cross of illness. And may all who have been called from this life come to worship you eternally with all the saints as you grant consolation and peace to their mourners. Amen.

Hello Brothers and Sisters in Christ, It would be difficult to overstate how challenging these days have been for all of us, as we face the various effects of the COVID-19 crisis on our families, jobs, and communities. Among the most dramatic ways we all have had to adjust to the coronavirus pandemic and control the spread of the virus is the suspension of Holy Mass and refraining from gathering in community. Please know that we priests miss our parishioners deeply! When we offer our private Masses each day, we are praying for your intentions. I hope you are praying a prayer of spiritual communion often, and that you are comforted by the constant presence of our Lord even when you cannot re-ceive him physically. In addition to the impact on our spiritual lives, the crisis is having significant financial and eco-nomic impacts on us all. Our inability to gather each week at Mass also means your parish is unable to receive your offertory gift there, and I cannot stress to you how vital this support is to your parish and the people who work there. Parish and parochial-school operating budgets depend on this reve-nue to pay employees and all the other monthly expenses associated with running the church. Most parishes don’t have large sums in reserve. Your continued support of your parish is crucial now. The purpose of this day is to publicly fulfill the Lord's instruction to, "Pray the Lord of the harvest to send laborers into his harvest" (Mt 9:38; Lk 10:2). Please pray that young men and women hear and re-spond generously to the Lord's call to the priesthood, diaconate, religious life, societies of apostolic life or

When was the last time you saw God? I don’t know about you, but I haven’t ever actually seen God. So how do we know God’s presence?
It’s a pretty interesting question. We can know God’s presence through the simplest of things. Something as simple as love because God is love. Where there is love, there is God. God is present when we love one another, and others see the goodness in the ways that we live. When we live and love like this, we are dwelling in God and God is dwelling is us. Dwelling in us through the Holy Spirit’s presence in our lives.
The evidence of God’s love is that He sent His Son into the world. After all, the reason for Jesus’ life, death and resurrection isn’t that we have to love God in return. No, God loves us freely and gave us, His Son as proof. All we have to do is to accept His love. What else can be easier to do? And isn’t this really what love is?
The most important thing about God’s love is not that we are com-manded to love, God’s loves is always with us. We know through the parting of Jesus from those who knew him was no ordinary parting or farewell.
The earthly part of Jesus ministry was drawing to a close and he had ascended to his rightful place alongside of his father. But through his Spirit, Jesus was to remain with his disciples, in spite of the parting, they wouldn’t be abandoned to fend for themselves. Jesus was to be with them after his ascension just as certainly as he had been before, but in a different way and still sharing his love.
It was difficult for the disciples to adjust. They had walked with Jesus, talked with him, broken bread with him, shared their lives and their dreams and now he was to be taken from their sight. They thought that they had lost him once, in death, but he had overcome their sad-ness by rising to new life.
Though they knew by this time his promise to remain with them through the Spirit would be kept, they still experienced the sad pangs of loss.
Yes, it was hard for the disciples but it’s hard for us too. We don’t have the consolation of his earthly presence, we haven’t heard his voice or touched his hand, and shared our food and drink as the disci-ples did. We have to struggle with his promise, trusting his word, believing in his spirit and living in his risen life. But our burden is our consolation. We know and believe, that we have heard his voice in our hearts, we know his call, we follow his teaching and we believe his promise of life. God sent his Son into the world to teach us how much God loves us. Giving us an example of unselfish living, without reservation, with no strings attached, and seeking nothing in return. By God’s grace we’re children of God and instruments of God in the world providing comfort to those who are sick and reaching out to the lonely.

¿Cuándo fue la última vez que viste a Dios? No sé sobre ti, pero nunca he visto a Dios. Entonces, ¿cómo sabemos de la presencia de Dios?
Es una pregunta bastante interesante. Podemos conocer la presen-cia de Dios a través de las cosas más simples. Algo tan simple como el amor, porque Dios es amor. Donde hay amor, hay Dios. Dios está presente cuando nos amamos, y otros ven la bondad en la forma en que vivimos. Cuando vivimos y amamos así, estamos morando en Dios y Dios mora en nosotros. Morando en nosotros a través de la presencia del Espíritu Santo en nuestras vidas.
La evidencia del amor de Dios es que envió a su Hijo al mundo. Después de todo, la razón de la vida, muerte y resurrección de Jesús no es que tengamos que amar a Dios a cambio. Si no que Dios nos ama libremente y nos dio a Su Hijo como prueba. Todo lo que tene-mos que hacer es aceptar su amor. ¿Qué más puede ser más fácil de hacer? ¿Y no es esto realmente lo que es el amor?
Lo más importante sobre el amor de Dios no es que se nos ordena amar, el amor de Dios siempre está con nosotros. Sabemos por la separación de Jesús de aquellos que lo conocieron no fue una despedida o despedida ordinaria.
La parte terrenal del ministerio de Jesús estaba llegando a su fin y había ascendido al lugar que le correspondía junto a su Padre. Pero a través de su Espíritu, Jesús debía permanecer con sus discípulos, a pesar de la separación, no serían abandonados para valerse por sí mismos. Jesús debía estar con ellos después de su ascensión tan ciertamente como lo había estado antes, pero de una manera diferente y aún compartiendo su amor.
Fue difícil para los discípulos adaptarse. Caminaron con Jesús, hablaron con Él, les partieo el pan, compartieron sus vidas y sus sueños y ahora se lo quitarían de su vista. Pensaron que lo habían perdido una vez, en la muerte, pero había superado su tristeza al resucitar a una nueva vida.
Aunque sabían que para entonces su promesa de permanecer con ellos a través del Espíritu se mantendría, aún experimentaban los tristes dolores de la pérdida.
Sí, fue difícil para los discípulos, pero también es difícil para nosotros. No tenemos el consuelo de su presencia terrenal, no hemos escuchado su voz ni hemos tocado su mano, ni hemos com-partido nuestra comida y bebida como lo hicieron los discípulos. Tenemos que luchar con su promesa, confiando en su palabra, creyendo en su espíritu y viviendo en su vida resucitada. Pero nues-tra carga es nuestro consuelo. Sabemos y creemos que hemos escu-chado su voz en nuestros corazones, conocemos su llamado, se-guimos sus enseñanzas y creemos en su promesa de vida.
Dios envió a su Hijo al mundo para enseñarnos cuánto nos ama Dios. Dándonos un ejemplo de vida desinteresada, sin reservas, sin condiciones, y sin buscar nada a cambio. Por la gracia de Dios, somos hijos de Dios e instrumentos de Dios en el mundo que brin-damos consuelo a los enfermos y nos acercamos a los solitarios.

[April 26, 2020] Third Sunday of Easter By: Deacon Mike Turner
We read today how Cleopas and his companion fled Jerusalem after the death of Jesus and, although they had heard the testimony of the women that Jesus had been raised from the dead, their disappointment and grief would not allow them to believe such an amazing story. Their misery and anguish are captured in one simple but profound statement: “We had hoped…” And yet, Jesus was there with them, walking with them through their grief, helping them recognize how God had been, and continued to be, at work in the violence of Good Friday and the silence of Holy Saturday. But, in their despair, they still didn’t recognize Him. Do we echo these same words today? We had hoped to be back to Mass soon. We had hoped to get married next month. We had hoped to gather as family on Sunday. We had hoped everything would be back to normal next week. Personally, I had hoped to Baptize my new-est Grandson yesterday. I think we all have our own “we had hoped” stories. It wasn’t until as we read, “He took bread, said the blessing, broke it, and gave it to them.” “With that their eyes were opened and they rec-ognized him”. They recognized Him “in the breaking of the bread” the “breaking of the Eucharist”. And I believe one phrase that often gets overlooked in this passage, “He gave it to them”. He gave of Himself as He does every time we receive the Eucharist. Yes, I know the church is closed, we cannot attend Mass, we cannot receive in the traditional way, however; we are the body of Christ, you and I. We must never forget this. We can be Eucharist to one another in this time when we cannot receive the Eucharist as we would like. I believe whenever a heart is “broken” open in love, Christ will become visible. Whenever we give of ourselves, Christ will become visible. Whenever we receive any kindness from someone, Christ is there. As we walk on our own road of despair today, Jesus walks alongside us. Do we have trouble recognizing Him because He is wearing scrubs? Or is standing behind a plastic shield wearing a store nametag? Or because He looks just like a friend or family member who dropped off a “care” package? Or do you fail to recognize His voice over the phone? He is visible in so many ways in this time, our time of despair, we just need to have our eyes opened, just as Cleopas and his companion did. The hope and promise of the Resurrection on that Easter Day was able to dispel the darkness of grief and despair for Cleopas and his friend, just as it can for us today. This is what we continue to celebrate in this Easter Season. The Resurrection shows us, most explicitly, that, for all time, there is hope. That Christ remains with us, journeying with us always, as we walk our pilgrim path. Saint Oscar Romero said, “Easter is a shout of victory! No one can extinguish that life that Christ resurrected. Not even death and hatred against him and against his church will be able to overcome it. He is the victor!” In all situations, He is the Victor. Alleluia, He is Risen!!

Leímos hoy cómo Cleofas y su compañero huyeron de Jerusalén después de la muerte de Jesús y, aunque habían escuchado el testimo-nio de las mujeres de que Jesús había resucitado de entre los muertos, su desilusión y dolor no les permitiría creer una historia tan asombrosa. Su miseria y angustia se capturan en una declaración simple pero pro-funda: "Habíamos esperado ..."
Y, sin embargo, Jesús estaba allí con ellos, caminando con ellos a través de su dolor, ayudándoles a reconocer cómo Dios había estado y seguía trabajando en la violencia del Viernes Santo y el silencio del Sábado Santo. Pero, en su desesperación, todavía no lo reconocieron.
¿Nos hacemos eco de estas mismas palabras hoy? Esperábamos volver pronto a Misa. Habíamos esperado casarnos el próximo mes. Habíamos esperado reunirnos como familia el domingo. Esperábamos que todo volviera a la normalidad la próxima semana. Personalmente, esperaba bautizar a mi nieto el más menor ayer. Creo que todos tene-mos nuestras propias historias de "habíamos esperado".
No fue sino hasta que leemos: "Tomó pan, dijo la bendición, lo partió y se los dio". "Con eso se les abrieron los ojos y lo reconocieron". Lo reconocieron "al partir el pan", el "partir la Eucaristía". Y creo que una frase que a menudo se pasa por alto en este pasaje, "se los dio". Él dio de sí mismo como lo hace cada vez que recibimos la Eucaristía. Sí, sé que la Iglesia está cerrada, no podemos asistir a Misa, sin embargo, no podemos recibir de la manera tradicional; Somos el cuerpo de Cristo, tú y yo. Nunca debemos olvidar esto. Podemos ser Eucaristía el uno para el otro en este tiempo cuando no podemos recibir la Eucaristía como nos gustaría. [April 27, 2020] Monday, the Third Week of Easter
By: Deacon Gary Brys Welcome to Monday! Is it Monday? The days are blurring together, time is not as defined as in the past. Routines are somewhat out of sorts as I find myself searching at times for the way things used to be. Lynne and I often wonder when this new cycle of life ends what will be our new normal? I mean this is going to end, right? Listening to the news, which is part of our new norm, we hear how desperately people want a date that we can go back to the way it was, to do what we used to do, to live our live like we once did. I’m not a prophet, (did not learn how to be in Deacon school) but I think that the when is not as important as to the what. What does God want us to learn from this, what is His message to the world? For one, we all need to slowdown and smell the roses! Take the time to look at the small things in life that are much more important than getting ahead. I understand for some, just trying to survive and provide for yourself or family has become your focus. Maybe God wants us to realize that there are millions of people, families that this is their everyday exist-ence, just to survive. For others it maybe dealing with the loss of fami-ly and friends, not being able to have funerals or burials, no closure. Others are fighting for their lives with every breath they take, not knowing when their last gasp of air might be. Then there are the Hero’s, the First Responders, the Medical Staff, the Clergy and Religious who every day risk their lives to save those in need. Many are separated from their families because they do not want to risk exposing them to what they are exposed to. So what does God want us to learn from this? One thing might be is for us to know that God did not cause this to happen. God love us. He is with us, leading us through this. Like St. Stephen in today’s first reading, God needs us to work great wonders and signs among the people. We need to share the love of Jesus the Nazorean, the Christ with those in need. Share Jesus’ love with our families and friends. With those working to help the sick and injured, those men and wom-en protecting us from those that want to harm us. We can all take this newfound source of free time and get rid of the stuff we do not need and give it to those that do. If you can, buy a can or two of food and give it to your local food bank. Start a live stream prayer group. Facetime with your family and friends. Continue to support your Par-ish as they are facing financial challenges to keep the bills paid as they continue to help our brothers and sisters reaching out for assistance. We know that Jesus fed five thousand men with just a few fish and loaves of bread as we read in today’s Gospel from John (6: 22-29). We know that Jesus lives in us and that we can feed the physical and spiritual needs of thousands, millions by just giving what we can of our time, talents and treasures. Jesus wants us to know: “Do not work for food that perishes but for food that endures for eternal life, which the Son of Man will give you”. So what can we do to accomplish the works of God like St. Stephen? We can do the work of God that we
believe in! With the love of Jesus Christ, the one he sent.

Bienvenido al lunes! ¿Es lunes? Los días se difuminan, el tiempo no está tan definido como en el pasado. Las rutinas están un poco fuera de lugar, ya que a veces me encuentro buscando cómo solían ser las co-sas. Lynne y yo a menudo nos preguntamos cuándo termina este nuevo ciclo de vida, ¿cuál será nuestra nueva normalidad? Quiero decir que
esto va a terminar, ¿verdad?
Al escuchar las noticias, que es parte de nuestra nueva norma, escu-chamos cuán desesperadamente la gente quiere una cita en la que podamos volver a ser como era, para hacer lo que solíamos hacer, para vivir nuestra vida como una vez lo hicimos. No soy un profeta (no aprendí a estar en la escuela de Deacon) pero creo que cuándo no es tan importante como el qué. ¿Qué quiere Dios que aprendamos de esto, cuál es su mensaje para el mundo? Por un lado, ¡todos nece-sitamos desacelerar y oler las rosas! Tómese el tiempo para mirar las cosas pequeñas de la vida que son mucho más importantes que ade-lantarse. Entiendo que para algunos, solo tratar de sobrevivir y man-tenernos a nosotros mismos o a la familia se ha convertido en su en-foque. Quizás Dios quiere que nos demos cuenta de que hay millones de personas, familias, que esta es su existencia cotidiana, solo para sobrevivir. Para otros, tal vez se trate de la pérdida de familiares y ami-gos, no poder tener funerales o entierros, sin cierre. Otros luchan por sus vidas con cada respiración que toman, sin saber cuándo podría ser
su último suspiro de aire.
Luego están los héroes, los primeros respondedores, el personal médi-co, el clero y los religiosos que todos los días arriesgan sus vidas para salvar a los necesitados. Muchos están separados de sus familias porque no quieren arriesgarse a exponerlos a lo que están expuestos. Entonces, ¿qué quiere Dios que aprendamos de esto? Una cosa podría ser que sepamos que Dios no hizo que esto sucediera. Dios nos ame Él está con nosotros, guiándonos a través de esto. Al igual que San Esteban en la primera lectura de hoy, Dios necesita que hagamos grandes maravillas y señales entre la gente. Necesitamos compartir el amor de Jesús el Nazoreano, el Cristo, con los necesitados. Comparta el amor de Jesús con nuestras familias y amigos. Con aquellos que trabajan para ayudar a los enfermos y heridos, esos hombres y mujeres nos protegen de aquellos que quieren dañarnos. Continúe apoyando a su parroquia mientras enfrentan desafíos financieros para mantener las cuentas pagadas mientras continúan ayudando a nuestros hermanos y hermanas a buscar ayuda.
Sabemos que Jesús alimentó a cinco mil hombres con unos pocos peces y hogazas de pan mientras leemos el Evangelio de San Juan de hoy (6: 22-29). Sabemos que Jesús vive en nosotros y que podemos alimentar las necesidades físicas y espirituales de miles, millones sim-plemente dando lo que podamos de nuestro tiempo, talentos y tesoros. [April 28, 2020] Tuesday of the Third Week of Easter

Our reading from the Acts of the Apostles presents us with two men of great faith. The first is Stephen who had the courage to witness to the Gospel in the early Church. He was one of the first ordained deacons and the first Christian martyr of the Church. We celebrate his feast day each year on December 26, right after Christ-mas. The other one we hear about in our first reading today is Saul. He stood there watching and consented to the killing of Stephen. We know that later on, Saul would change his name to Paul. After his conversion, he would become the greatest missionary the Church had ever seen. He himself would die a martyr’s death in Rome.
Perhaps Paul’s conversion could be seen as a fruit of Ste-phen’s prayer during his martyrdom, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” The blood of countless martyrs planted seeds of faith in the early Christian Church. Why would Stephen, Paul and many early Chris-tians readily sacrifice their lives for Christ? Think about the heroic efforts of our doctors, nurses and medical personnel who risk their lives for others and for Christ at this time when you try to answer this question.
In today’s Gospel, people were asking for a sign so they could believe that Jesus was really sent by God. Jesus give them the greatest of signs: the Bread of Life, the Eucharist. The Eucharist is God’s answer to our prayer to truly know that He is with us in this life. To quote Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI: “The Eucharist means God has answered: The Eucharist is God as an answer, as an answering presence.”
In the Eucharist, God answers our prayers to know that He is with us in our challenges, crosses, temptations, doubts, sickness and even death. He is with us when we are challenged to love our enemies and forgive those who have hurt us. He is with us in all our struggles and in moments of personal weakness.
Last weekend, Bishop Soto wrote a letter to all the faithful expressing his hope that we can gather again at the Eucharistic table. I know some of you sincerely desire to be in communion with the Lord Jesus and one another through the Most Holy Eucharist. We therefore pray through the powerful intercession of Saints Stephen and Paul that we can celebrate again with our Risen Lord Jesus, the Bread of Life – the Most Holy Eucharist.
May He truly be God’s answer to all our prayers at this most difficult time! AMEN.

Nuestra lectura de los Hechos de los Apóstoles nos presenta a dos hombres de gran fe. El primero es Stephen, quien tuvo el coraje de dar testimonio del Evangelio en la Iglesia primitiva. Fue uno de los primeros Diáconos ordenados y el primer mártir cristiano de la Iglesia. Celebramos su fiesta todos los años el 26 de diciembre, justo después de Navidad. El otro del que escuchamos en nuestra primera lectura de hoy es Saúl. Se quedó allí mirando y consintió en el asesinato de Ste-phen. Sabemos que más tarde, Saúl cambiaría su nombre a Pablo. Después de su conversión, se convertiría en el mayor misionero que la
Iglesia había visto. Él mismo moriría como un mártir en Roma.
Quizás la conversión de Pablo podría verse como un fruto de la oración de Esteban durante su martirio, "Señor Jesús, recibe mi es-píritu". La sangre de innumerables mártires plantó semillas de fe en la Iglesia cristiana primitiva. ¿Por qué Stephen, Pablo y muchos cris-tianos primitivos sacrificarían fácilmente sus vidas por Cristo? Piense en los heroicos esfuerzos de nuestros médicos, enfermeras y personal médico que arriesgan sus vidas por los demás y por Cristo en este
momento cuando intenta responder esta pregunta.

Para citar al Papa emérito Benedic-to XVI: "La Eucaristía significa que Dios ha respondido: La Eucaristía
es Dios como respuesta, como presencia de respuesta".
En la Eucaristía, Dios contesta nuestras oraciones para saber que Él está con nosotros en nuestros desafíos, cruces, tentaciones, dudas, enfermedades e incluso la muerte. Él está con nosotros cuan-do tenemos el desafío de amar a nuestros enemigos y perdonar a quienes nos han lastimado. Él está con nosotros en todas nuestras
luchas y en momentos de debilidad personal.
El fin de semana pasado, el Obispo Soto escribió una carta a todos los fieles expresando su esperanza de que podamos reunirnos nuevamente en la mesa Eucarística. Sé que algunos de ustedes desean sinceramente estar en comunión con el Señor Jesús y entre sí a través de la Santísima Eucaristía. Por lo tanto, oremos por la po-derosa intercesión de los Santos Esteban y Pablo para que podamos celebrar nuevamente con nuestro Señor Jesús Resucitado, el Pan de

“HOLY REBELLION: AN OXYMORON IN FAITH” The Memorial of St. Catherine of Siena,
Virgin and Doctor of the Church Wednesday of the Third Week of Easter

In the beginning of the 14th century, mainly due to political instability under the Roman Empire, the Papacy (The Holy See) was moved to Avignon in France. For almost seventy years, Popes resided in France as they governed the Catholic Church up until a young and very holy woman named “Catherine” (means “Pure” in Greek) was able to persuade Pope Gregory XI to return the Papacy to Rome.
Do not think for a second that Catherine’s purity makes her a “fragile holy creature” who cannot even exterminate a fly with her absolute
humility and polished demeanor. She was very prudent but never naïve. She may have been very young but her spiritual and theological maturi-ties were beyond her years. Fearless cannot even satisfactorily capture her zeal to protect the Church that she loved deeply. Her holiness was deeply rooted in her love of our Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Mother Church. Driven by her deep sense of love and fear of God, she became an instrument of the Holy Spirit to call on Pope Gregory XI to put the will of God first and not his selfish will. She did this by sending him several let-ters and even meeting the Pope in person while in France.
It is quite fitting that we celebrate and honor St. Catherine today, when Catholics all over the world are becoming restless and (im)
patiently waiting in lockdown for the day to come when we can all publicly celebrate the Holy Eucharist and receive the Real Presence of our Lord Jesus Christ, His Body and Blood. Perhaps some of you are already inspired by St. Catherine that you have already written a draft of a letter de-manding the bishop that our local parishes be opened immediately and to receive communion, not hands but by tongue under both species, and so on. I just want to be clear that I am neither suggesting that a rebellion a la St. Catherine of Siena be made, nor making light of the heartbreak-ing reality that public celebration of Masses are suspended until further notice, nor I am throwing a shade to those who genuinely are accustomed to receive the Holy Communion only by tongue. The important point to deduce from these words is the fact that our experience of being deprived of our spiritual banquet, the Eucharist, has been very emotionally painful and spiritually devastating on both personal and communal levels. All of us are grieving as Catholics not just locally here at St. Rose of Lima Parish in Roseville but also globally.
The juxtaposition of the two opposing realities in the person of St. Catherine, “the holy in the eyes of God and the rebellious in the eyes
of humanity,” is not only groundbreaking but also life altering for the whole of the Catholic Church (especially coming from a young woman in a male dominated institution during the Medieval Era). If we are truly to imitate the deeds and ways of St. Catherine, remember that her enthusiasm was rooted in well-founded faith and holiness, not in anger. Her zeal to call for a change in the Church was entrenched clearly in the understand-ing that the safety of the whole Church takes precedence over her own personal desires. Her demand for the Papacy to return to Rome was driv-en by her deep love for Christ and how this love affects everyone around her.
Holiness is the key to St. Catherine’s story, not resentment or bitterness. Let us always be considerate and continually discerning in
the ways we express our faith and love for our God and His Church. Let us stand up against injustice and fight for the vulnerable, even if some-times, and sadly, this fight has to be made from within. We do this, however, not as rebels without a cause but with men and women of solid faith in Christ, great mercy, justice, prudence, and humility! Like St. Catherine of Siena and not like the fallen angel who was banished from Heaven to the fiery Gehenna.
P.S. St. Catherine is also the Patroness of Italy and of Nurses. She can be also be invoked for a good death and guidance in time of plagues. These are just some of the many reasons why it is quite fitting for us to ask for her intercessions in this time of pandemic. If you have developed a migraine or about to have one after reading this, remember that you may also invoke right away this saint’s name from Siena.

A principios del siglo XIV, principalmente debido a la inestabilidad política bajo el Imperio Romano, el Papado (La Santa Sede) fue trasladado a Aviñón en Francia. Durante casi setenta años, los Papas residieron en Francia mientras gobernaban la Iglesia Católica hasta que una joven y muy santa mujer llamada "Catalina" (significa "Pura" en griego) pudo persuadir al Papa Gregorio XI para que devolviera el Papado a Roma.
No pienses ni por un segundo que la pureza de Catalina la convierte en una "criatura sagrada frágil" que ni siquiera puede exterminar a
una mosca con su absoluta humildad y su pulido comportamiento. Era muy prudente pero nunca ingenua. Ella pudo haber sido muy joven, pero sus vencimientos espirituales y teológicos fueron más allá de sus años. Sin Miedo ni siquiera puede capturar satisfactoriamente su celo por proteger a la Iglesia que amaba profundamente. Su santidad estaba profundamente arraigada en su amor a nuestro Señor Jesucristo y a la San-ta Madre Iglesia. Impulsada por su profundo sentido de amor y temor a Dios, se convirtió en un instrumento del Espíritu Santo para llamar al Pa-pa Gregorio XI a poner primero la voluntad de Dios y no su voluntad egoísta. Ella hizo esto enviándole varias cartas e incluso conociendo al Papa en persona mientras estaba en Francia.
Es muy apropiado que celebremos y honremos a Santa Catalina hoy, cuando los Católicos de todo el mundo se están inquietando y
esperan pacientemente en el cierre del día que vendrá cuando todos podamos celebrar públicamente la Sagrada Eucaristía y recibir la Presencia real de nuestro Señor Jesucristo, su cuerpo y sangre. Quizás algunos de ustedes ya estén inspirados por Santa Catalina de que ya han escrito un borrador de una carta exigiendo al Obispo que nuestras parroquias locales se abran de inmediato y reciban la comunión, no con las manos sino con la lengua debajo de ambas especies, y así sucesivamente. Solo quiero dejar en claro que no estoy sugiriendo que se haga una rebelión a la Santa Catalina de Siena, ni aclarando la realidad desgarradora de que la celebración pública de Misas se suspende hasta nuevo aviso, ni les estoy dando sombra a aquellos quienes genuinamente están acostumbrados a recibir la Sagrada Comunión solo por la lengua. El punto im-portante a deducir de estas palabras es el hecho de que nuestra experiencia de ser privados de nuestro banquete espiritual, la Eucaristía, ha sido muy dolorosa emocionalmente y espiritualmente devastadora tanto a nivel personal como comunitario. Todos estamos afligidos como católicos no solo localmente en la parroquia de Santa Rosa de Lima en Roseville sino también a nivel mundial.
La yuxtaposición de las dos realidades opuestas en la persona de Santa Catalina, "la Santa a los ojos de Dios y la rebelde a los ojos de
la humanidad", no solo es innovadora sino que también altera la vida de toda la Iglesia Católica (especialmente viniendo de una mujer joven en una institución dominada por hombres durante la Era Medieval). Si realmente vamos a imitar los hechos y las formas de Santa Catalina, recuerde que su entusiasmo se basaba en una fe y santidad bien fundadas, no en la ira. Su celo por pedir un cambio en la Iglesia estaba firmemente arraigado en el entendimiento de que la seguridad de toda la Iglesia tiene prioridad sobre sus propios deseos personales. Su demanda de que el Papado regrese a Roma fue impulsada por su profundo amor por Cristo y cómo este amor afecta a todos a su alrededor. La santidad es la clave de la historia de Santa Catalina, no el resentimiento o la amargura. Seamos siempre considerados y continuamente discernidores en las formas en que expresamos nuestra fe y amor por nuestro Dios y su Iglesia. Pongámonos de pie contra la injusticia y luchemos por los vulnerables, incluso si a veces, y tristemente, esta lucha tiene que hacerse desde adentro. ¡Sin embargo, hacemos esto no como rebeldes sin causa, sino con hombres y mujeres de fe sólida en Cristo, gran misericordia, justicia, prudencia y humildad! Como Santa Catalina de Siena y no como el ángel caído que fue desterrado del cielo a la ardiente Gehenna.
Santa Catalina es también la Patrona de Italia y de las Enfermeras. También puede ser invocada para una buena muerte y orientación en tiempos de plagas. Estas son solo algunas de las muchas razones por las cuales es bastante apropiado que le pidamos sus intercesiones en este momento de pandemia. Si ha desarrollado una migraña o va a tener una después de leer esto, recuerde que también puede invocar de inmediato el nombre de esta Santa.

I must admit I have had my struggles with this “stay in place” order. I discovered that my life really is my faith. It is where I find so much peace and joy, and I love all my ministries, even when I am crazy busy! Then, all of a sudden, boom…almost everything was gone except an occasional meeting by phone or video. Wow! I was not prepared for this! What was I do with all this time on my hands??? At first, I found it very hard to pray, just praying intermittently when I was use to pray-ing a lot. My heart was just not in it. I was very sad about this whole situation. So, what to do…I decided to find a good book to read. I went through my many books and found a few, one being The C.S. Lewis Classics. That definitely must have been an inspiration by God to read this author. He is an absolute genius Apologist and really puts our faith in perspective in layman’s terms. So, in case anyone else might be going through ministry withdrawals, I thought I’d pass along some inspirational thoughts just in case you may have felt or feel what I was going through. Faith is a very necessary virtue, but one must train their faith with daily prayers, scripture readings and receiving the Eucharist, either physically or spiritually. Trust your intuition, trust that God is with you. The mind creates doubt, the heart creates faith. Faith is based on an intuitive knowledge that comes from the heart, not the mind. We just need to silence the noise of our minds to experience the beauty of our faith. Everyone suffers by mistakes or the things that life might throw at us, but we need to keep the faith not only in good times, but in the tough times too. Worrying only makes things worse and doesn’t accomplish anything except cause more worrying. Just be. Nehemiah 8:10 Do not grieve, for the joy of the Lord is your strength. Isiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God.

Debo admitir que he tenido dificultades con esta orden de "permanecer en un lugar". Descubrí que mi vida realmente es mi fe. Es donde encuentro tanta paz y alegría, y amo a todos mis ministeri-os, ¡incluso cuando estoy locamente ocupado!
Entonces, de repente, boom ... casi todo se había ido, excepto una reunión ocasional por teléfono o video. ¡Guauu! ¡No estaba prepara-do para esto! ¿Qué estaba haciendo con todo este tiempo en mis manos? Al principio, me resultaba muy difícil rezar, solo rezaba inter-mitentemente cuando estaba acostumbrado a rezar mucho. Mi corazón simplemente no estaba en eso. Estaba muy triste por toda esta situación.
Entonces, qué hacer ... Decidí encontrar un buen libro para leer. Revisé mis muchos libros y encontré algunos, uno de ellos, The C.S. Lewis Classics. Eso definitivamente debe haber sido una inspiración de Dios para leer a este autor. Es un apologista genio absoluto y realmente pone nuestra fe en perspectiva en términos simples. En-tonces, en caso de que alguien más esté pasando por retiros del ministerio, pensé en transmitir algunos pensamientos inspiradores en caso de que hayas sentido lo que yo estaba sintiendo.
La fe es una virtud muy necesaria, pero uno debe entrenar su fe con oraciones diarias, lecturas de las Escrituras y recibir la Eucaristía, ya sea física o espiritualmente.
Confía en tu intuición, confía en que Dios está contigo. La mente crea dudas, el corazón crea fe. La fe se basa en un conocimiento intuitivo que proviene del corazón, no de la mente. Solo necesitamos silenciar el ruido de nuestras mentes para experimentar la belleza de nuestra fe.
Todos sufren errores o las cosas que la vida nos puede arrojar, pero necesitamos mantener la fe no solo en los buenos tiempos, sino también en los tiempos difíciles. Preocuparse solo empeora las cosas y no logra nada excepto causar más preocupación. Dejelo ser. Nehemías 8:10 No te aflijas, porque el gozo del Señor es tu fortaleza. By: Deacon Mike Turner The Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke each have the institution of the Eucharist story at the last Supper in one form or another, where-as, John’s Gospel does not. Instead John has these beautiful Last Supper discourses that include the washing of the disciple’s feet, the promise of an Advocate and much more. Now I don’t know if it is theologically correct, but I might propose that John’s Institution of the Eucharist is located in the sixth chapter of his Gospel that we have been reading these past few days, titled “The Bread of Life Dis-course”. We hear one of the seven great “I Am” statements, “I Am the Bread of Life”. He goes on to say, “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” Now, for us, this is a concept we have no problem with, we know who He is and we see the “end” of the story witnessing His glorious resur-rection. But for a first century Jew, I can understand their confusion. They saw a man, a great man, yes, a great teacher, a great Rabbi, but they were unable to understand that it was the Son of God who stood before them. So, to hear someone say they must eat his flesh and drink his blood was abhorrent to them; remember, these are peo-ple that would not even eat pork. To complicate it even further, the words Jesus uses literally translate to, “to gnaw or chew’ the flesh. I can understand why some walked away.
I have a more difficult time understanding in this day and age when someone walks away. I can’t help but feel that we, as clergy, we as parents, have failed in some way to properly pass on this miraculous message, that we have failed to evangelize and catechize these peo-ple. We must continue to teach, in our words and importantly, in our actions, that Christ is really present in the Eucharistic elements, that those who eats and drink the Lord’s Body and Blood becomes config-ured to Christ in a far more than metaphorical way. The Eucharist, “Christifies” us to become His hands and feet, His voice, His body, here on earth. The Eucharist truly transforms us.
The beauty of the Eucharist is that, even in these difficult times when we cannot receive as we have in the past, nothing changes. Jesus said, “whoever eats this bread will live forever.” He did not say, who-ever eats this bread every Sunday, will live forever. Whenever we receive, whether it was last month or last week, we have been trans-formed, we are His and continue to be His and that allows us to be “Eucharist” to one another.
Until that glorious day when we gather again as one, I will keep you in my prayers. Be safe, be kind, be Jesus to someone today. On another note, today is May 1st and as always, we dedicate this month to our Blessed Mother, she who brought new life into this world in our Lord Jesus Christ.
Let us pray: REMEMBER, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession was left unaided. In-spired with this confidence, I fly to thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother; to thee do I come; before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

Los Evangelios de San Mateo, Marcos y Lucas tienen la institución de la historia de la Eucaristía en la última Cena de una forma u otra, mientras que el Evangelio de San Juan no. En cambio, San Juan tiene estos hermosos discursos de la Última Cena que incluyen el lavado de los pies del discípulo, la promesa de un Abogado y mucho más. Ahora no sé si es teológicamente correcto, pero podría proponer que la In-stitución de la Eucaristía de Juan se encuentre en el sexto capítulo de su Evangelio que hemos estado leyendo estos últimos días, titulado "El discurso del pan de vida". Escuchamos una de las siete grandes declaraciones "Yo Soy", "Yo Soy el Pan de Vida". Continúa diciendo: “Yo soy el pan vivo que descendió del cielo; el que coma este pan vivirá para siempre; y el pan que daré es mi carne para la vida del mundo". Ahora, para nosotros, este es un concepto con el que no tenemos ningún problema, sabemos quién es Él y vemos el "final" de la historia presenciando Su gloriosa resurrección. Pero para un judío del primer siglo, puedo entender su confusión. Vieron a un hombre, un gran hombre, sí, un gran maestro, un gran rabino, pero no pudieron entender que era el Hijo de Dios quien estaba delante de ellos. En-tonces, escuchar a alguien decir que deben comer su carne y beber su sangre era aborrecible para ellos; recuerde, estas son personas que ni siquiera comerían carne de cerdo. Para complicarlo aún más, las palabras que Jesús usa literalmente se traducen como "roer o masticar" la carne. Puedo entender por qué algunos se fueron.
Me resulta más difícil entenderlo hoy en día cuando alguien se va. No puedo evitar sentir que nosotros, como clero, nosotros como padres, hemos fallado de alguna manera en transmitir adecuadamente este mensaje milagroso, que hemos fallado en evangelizar y catequizar a estas personas. Debemos continuar enseñando, en nuestras palabras y, lo que es más importante, en nuestras acciones, que Cristo está realmente presente en los elementos eucarísticos, que aquellos que comen y beben el Cuerpo y la Sangre del Señor se configuran para Cristo de una manera mucho más que metafórica. La Eucaristía, "nos cristifica" para convertirnos en Sus manos y pies, Su voz, y Su cuerpo, aquí en la tierra. La Eucaristía realmente nos transforma.
La belleza de la Eucaristía es que, incluso en estos tiempos difíciles cuando no podemos recibir como lo hemos hecho en el pasado, nada cambia. Jesús dijo: "El que coma este pan vivirá para siempre". No dijo que quien coma este pan todos los domingos vivirá para siempre. Cada vez que recibimos, ya sea el mes pasado o la semana pasada, hemos sido transformados, somos suyos y seguimos siendo suyos y eso nos permite ser "Eucaristía" el uno al otro.
Hasta ese glorioso día cuando nos reunamos nuevamente como uno, los mantendré en mis oraciones. Mantente a salvo, sé amable, sé Jesús para alguien hoy.
En otra nota, hoy es 1 de mayo y, como siempre, dedicamos este mes a nuestra Santísima Madre, la que trajo nueva vida a este mundo en nuestro Señor Jesucristo.
Oremos: RECUERDA, oh muy amable Virgen María, que nunca se supo que alguien que huyó a tu protección, imploró tu ayuda o buscó tu intercesión quedó sin ayuda. Inspirada con esta confianza, vuelo hacia ti, Virgen de las vírgenes, Madre mía; a ti vengo; delante de ti estoy pecaminoso y triste. Oh Madre de la Palabra Encarnada, no desprecies mis peticiones, pero en tu misericordia escucha y respóndeme. Amén.
