Apr. 8, 2018 John 20: 19-31 In todays Gospel, Jesus greets his disciples with the gift of peace. Jesus then commissions his disciples to continue the work that he has begun; as Jesus was sent by God, so Jesus sends his disciples. He gives his disci- ples the gift of the Holy Spirit so that they will be able to accom- plish this task. Jesuswords to his disciples also highlight the inte- gral connection between the forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit. With the grace of the Holy Spirit, we can share for- giveness and reconciliation with others. Thomas, the doubting disciple in todays reading, represents the reality of the Church that comes after this first community of wit- nesses to Jesus. All but the first disciples of Jesus must believe without seeing. Like Thomas, we may doubt the news that Jesus, who was crucified and buried, appeared to his disciples. Our hu- man nature seeks hard evidence that the Jesus who appeared to his disciples after his death is indeed the same Jesus who was cruci- fied. Thomas is given the opportunity to be our representative in obtaining this evidence. He gives witness to us that the Jesus who was raised is the same Jesus who died. Through the gift of the Ho- ly Spirit, we are among those who are blessed, for we have not seen and yet believe. Apr. 8, 2018 John 20: 19-31 In today’s Gospel, Jesus greets his disciples with the gift of peace. Jesus then commissions his disciples to continue the work that he has begun; as Jesus was sent by God, so Jesus sends his disciples. He gives his disci-ples the gift of the Holy Spirit so that they will be able to accom-plish this task. Jesus’ words to his disciples also highlight the inte-gral connection between the forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit. With the grace of the Holy Spirit, we can share for-giveness and reconciliation with others.

Thomas, the doubting disciple in today’s reading, represents the reality of the Church that comes after this first community of wit-nesses to Jesus. All but the first disciples of Jesus must believe without seeing. Like Thomas, we may doubt the news that Jesus, who was crucified and buried, appeared to his disciples. Our hu-man nature seeks hard evidence that the Jesus who appeared to his disciples after his death is indeed the same Jesus who was cruci-fied. Thomas is given the opportunity to be our representative in obtaining this evidence. He gives witness to us that the Jesus who was raised is the same Jesus who died. Through the gift of the Ho-ly Spirit, we are among those who are blessed, for we have not seen and yet believe.

We, the Roman Catholic parishes of Christ the King and St. James the Apostle, because of our faith in Jesus Christ and our love for one another, commit ourselves to continue the mission of Jesus Christ. As people of God, we are called to evangelize by:

Inviting people to worship with us

Reaching out to the less fortunate

Educating ourselves and others in the Catholic Christian faith

Recognizing the gifts and talents of everyone

Respecting all individuals

Committing ourselves to implement this vision of faith

2nd Sunday of Easter / Sunday of Divine Mercy Page 5

From the Desk of Deacon John J.M.J.

ALLELUIA, HE HAS RISEN!

We continue over these next 6 weeks of the Easter Season to celebrate Jesus’ resurrection as He has triumphed over sin and death, opening for us the gate of paradise! Continued Easter Blessings to all of you and your families. May the peace of the Risen Lord always dwell within each of us.

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my personal thanks to everyone who helped make our Holy Week and Triduum Liturgies so moving and uplifting. My thanks to our Music Minister, Brenda, to both par-ish choirs, the bell choir and the cantors for helping us lift our prayer in song. To all who assisted at the Holy Altar of God, the Lectors who proclaimed the Word of God, the altar servers who assisted at all the various liturgies and the ushers who assisted in greeting and assisting our parishioners and visitors. Many thanks to all those who took such time and detail in decorating the sanctuaries of our parishes from Palm Sunday through Easter Sunday. Everything looked absolutely beautiful for all the various liturgies. My thanks to all of the priests who continue to provide such wonderful service to our parishes, Fr. Frank Almade, Fr. Bill Siple, Fr. Zach Galiyas, Fr. Michael Peck, Fr. Jim Downs and our Vicar/Priest Director, Fr. Philip Farrell. My special thanks to all parishioners for sharing your faith with our parish community. The Easter season continues on up to Pentecost. Let us continue to celebrate this great season with joy and gratitude to our Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ!

Today, the Church also celebrates Divine Mercy Sunday. Please note this afternoon we will have Divine Mercy Sunday Devotions at 3 p.m. at St. Anthony Church in Bessemer. Divine Mercy Sun-day is celebrated on the Sunday after Easter, the Octave Day of Easter. The feast day is observed by Roman Catholics as well as some Anglicans. It is originally based on the Catholic devotion to the Divine Mercy that St. Faustina Kowalska reported as part of her encounter with Jesus, and is associated with special promises from Jesus and indulgences issued by the Church.

The feast of Divine Mercy, as recorded in the diary of Saint Fausti-na, receives from Jesus himself the biggest promises of grace related to the Devotion of Divine Mercy. In specific, Jesus said that a person who goes to sacramental confession (the confession may take place some days before) and receives Holy Communion on that day, shall obtain the total forgiveness of all sins and punishment.

The devotion was actively promoted by St. Pope John Paul II. On April 30, 2000, the Canoni-zation of Faustina Kowalska took place and the Sunday after Easter was officially designated as the Sunday of the Divine Mercy in the General Roman Calendar.

We will have exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, sing the Chaplet of Divine Mercy and also included will be a special prayer and recognition for our Confirmation Candidates who will be present at this service along with their families. I invite everyone to this beautiful service this afternoon as a way of giving thanks to our Lord for His infinite gift of Mercy, and to also pray for our youth as they prepare to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation.

Alleluia, He is risen! He is risen indeed! May the peace of the risen Lord be with you all!

Trivia Answer: F) any of the above

Currently the sacrament of Confirmation is cele-brated at various ages of candidates in the Church. There is still a debate in the Church concerning the age that is best for celebrating this sacrament of initia-tion. So there is no one right answer to this question; actually, each one is right, in a way.

In the early days of the church, Confirmation was not a sacrament separate from Baptism. New Christians would receive all the sacraments of initiation at the Easter Vigil liturgy, like they do today. The person was baptized by being im-mersed in a baptismal pool, then anointed with chrism by the bishop and then wel-comed at the Lord’s Table of the Eucharist. But when more and more people be-came Christian, the bishops were unable to be at every Baptism, so they would go from parish to parish to confirm all those baptized during that previous year. Then, when people began baptizing infants, Confirmation became separated even further from Baptism until it evolved and was considered a special sacrament in its own right.

Today, the Church allows bishops to set the age for Confirmation in their own countries. In the U.S., each bishop sets the age he considers best within his own diocese. Currently in the Pittsburgh Diocese, that age is about 14. In some neighboring dioceses, the selected age is before First Communion. In East-ern Rite Catholic churches, infants are confirmed when they are baptized. Adults and children who are just becoming Catholic celebrate Confirmation during the Easter Vigil. While there are advantages for each of the different ages, there is much diversity within church practice at this time.

All bishops encourage parishes to renew the connec-tion between Baptism and Confirmation, no mat-ter what age the candidates are. Whenever Confirma-tion is celebrated, we believe that the Spirit received in Baptism is intensified in the candidate being con-firmed. The anointed person is strengthened to live out her/his baptismal call to share God’s life with oth-ers and to help make the world a better place. This cannot be done alone, but by joining with others in the church community who also are committed to build-ing God’s reign on earth.

When were you confirmed? How is the Spirit ac-tive in you and helping you to be a faithful follow-er.

MATERNAL WOMB OF MERCY

A special weekend program sched-uled at Villa Maria beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday, April 13, and con-cluding at noon on Sunday, April

15, will feature Brother Mickey McGrath, an Oblate of St. Frances de Sales and an award winning artist, author and speaker.

Pope Francis has said the Church should be a Maternal Womb of Mercy, a home of joy and love, not a cold institution centered on rules and regulations. In this popular presentation, Bro. Mickey will share his color-ful paintings and the stories behind them. Each is in-spired by the Gospel and the lives of the saints from across time. In these anxious times of fear and divi-sion, come feel the healing power of beauty and joy, and a reminder of the gentle and loving maternal side of God. For more information go to www.villaprograms.org or call 724-964-8886 or con-tact Sr. Zoe Ann.

ST. JAMES BIBLE STUDY

All are welcome to join us at St. James for our weekly Bible Study on the Women of the Old Testament. We meet on Monday nights at 7:00-8:30 and Tuesday mornings at 9:15-10:45

in the Great Room. Choose whichever day better suits your schedule each week. In preparation for the next session on April 9/10 we will be reading about some Women of Courage and Strength with a focus on Judith and Susanna in the books of Judith Chap-ters 8-16 and Daniel Chapter 13. Contact Sr. Zoe Ann for more info.

RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS

A special and joyful WEL-COME and CONGRATU-

LATIONS to our newest Catholic at St. James, JA-SON MATHIESON, our neophyte (newly baptized). He celebrated all the Easter sacraments at the Easter Vigil last Saturday at St. Camillus with the other candidates. Accompanied by his godparents, Pete Pascale and Elizabeth Wilson, and his wife Katie Mathieson, Jason was baptized, confirmed, and then fed at the Table of the Lord with the Eucharist. We are so happy that he was chosen by God to be initiated into our church and we cele-brate our kinship with him in Jesus Christ! Alleluia!

St. James Calendar of Events April 8 through April 21

April 08, 2018

Dear parishioners,

Many of you have heard me talk about spiritual pilgrimages to faraway

holy places. This year, my spiritual pilgrimage at home through Lent

into the Easter season was most difficult.

I was sick the entire month of February. Weak, tired, with little energy.

But I didn't know why. A visit to my doctor didn't help.

On Friday, March 2, I went to the emergency room of UPMC Mercy

Hospital in Pittsburgh. I was admitted into the hospital for many

tests. The doctors determined I had bacteria on the aortic valve of my

heart. I needed open heart surgery to replace this valve.

I was transferred to UPMC Presby Hospital, where I was operated on

Thursday, March 8. The operation was a success, but the surgeon had

told me that the road to recovery would be long and slow.

Through the care of nurses, doctors and technicians, and with your

prayers, I have moved from the intensive care unit at Presby, to a step-

down unit, to a week's stay in a regular hospital bed.

As you read this, I am in a nursing rehabilitation facility in the South

Hills of Pittsburgh, for physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech

therapy and rest. Many more weeks of recovery are ahead of me on

this physical and spiritual pilgrimage—how many nobody knows.

I am most grateful for everyone's prayers. Thanks to our priests and

pastoral staff for taking such good care of our wonderful New Castle

parishes. I am slowly getting stronger. I am sustained on this

pilgrimage toward full health by God's love and your support.

May Christ the Divine Physician be there for all who are sick in our

parishes and families. Pray for me, as I keep you in my prayers.

Father Frank D. Almade

Pastor

Dear Friends,

We invite you to participate in the third course in the ChristLife series called Sharing Christ. In this course we

will learn how to express ourselves as true disciples to all those we meet. You need not have taken part in the

first two courses. All are welcome to participate in Sharing Christ.

Sharing Christ will be held at St. James the Apostle beginning May 8th for six consecutive Tuesday evenings.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and refreshments will be served at 6:45 p.m. Our meeting time will be 7:00 to 9:00

and the evenings are free of cost. We will also share a beautiful retreat together at the Villa Maria in New

Bedford on June 23rd from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Please send in your registration by May 1st. We are excited to reconnect with you through prayer, song, teach-

ing, conversation, and tasty desserts.

God love each of you,

The Greater New Castle Evangelization Team
