Jonathan, his wife Barbara and their children Luca 7, and Vittoria 2, are currently living in Naples, Florida. Jonathan is currently the deacon and youth minister at St. Monicas Episcopal Church. Prior to that position, he served for 5 years as the assistant pastor at First Presbyterian Church in Naples. Barbara works as the Chief Development Officer of Grace Place for Children and Families. A curate differs in a few ways from a priest-associate. Traditionally, the church places newly ordained clergy as curates to serve under the direction of a seasoned parish priest and staff. This mentorship enables young clergy to develop skills vital to their future ecclesial leadership. In recent years however, the number of such positions has declined. So its important that parishes like ours, with a multi-clergy staff, create the opportunity for a curacy. Both Bishop Smith and I believe that St. Boniface with its wealth of active and gifted laity, assiting/retired clergy, and excellent professional staff, is most appropriately suited to both form and launch the Episcopal Churchs future leaders. So we will! Beyond his regular clerical duties of preaching and administering the sacraments, Jonathans specific ministry portfolio will include coordinating our pastoral care program, and further developing Christian formation for all ages (with special emphasis on youth.) His ordination to the priesthood will occur here, sometime this summer. Next, The Rev. Dolores Deede Montmollin has joined our roster of assisting/retired clergy. Rev. Dee preached here on April 23 and will now be hanging her stolewith us when she and her husband Phil are not in North Carolina. Third, our parishioner Elisa Hansen, who, as part of her formation to become a deacon has been interning at St. Margarets, will be returning to St. Boniface in May. She was recently nominated by our vestry as a Candidate for Holy Orders, a last step in her ordination process, so we look forward to Elisa being ordained in December. Finally, Carol Beevers, a nun with the Sisters of St. Joseph, will be joining us here on the St. Boniface campus offering individual and group spiritual direction to the community. Carol has recently moved to Sarasota from Ft. Myers and has a long relationship with the clergy and laity of the Episcopal Church. So even as we say goodbye (for a while) to our seasonal residents, things are far from slowing down here at the parish. Writings from Wayne Easter 2017

Dear Friends ,

My heartfelt thanks to all of the volunteers, clergy, staff, and donors who each contributed so much to our meaningful Holy Week and glorious Easter celebrations. “Wow!” was the response that we heard over and over from folks. Everyone worked so hard, God was glorified, and I am grateful.

Now, I want to share some exciting staffing news with you.

First, we have called a curate! The Rev. Jonathan Evans will begin work here around June 1. Jonathan, his wife Barbara and their children Luca 7, and Vittoria 2, are currently living in Naples, Florida. Jonathan is currently the deacon and youth minister at St. Monica’s Episcopal Church.

So it’s important that parishes like ours, with a multi-clergy staff, create the opportunity for a curacy.

Both Bishop Smith and I believe that St. Boniface with its wealth of active and gifted laity, assiting/retired clergy, and excellent professional staff, is most appropriately suited to both form and launch the Episcopal Church’s future leaders. So we will!

Beyond his regular clerical duties of preaching and administering the sacraments, Jonathan’s specific ministry portfolio will include coordinating our pastoral care program, and further developing Christian formation for all ages (with special emphasis on youth.) His ordination to the priesthood will occur here, sometime this summer.

Next, The Rev. Dolores “Dee” de Montmollin has joined our roster of assisting/retired clergy. Rev. Dee preached here on April 23 and will now be “hanging her stole” with us when she and her husband Phil are not in North Carolina.

Third, our parishioner Elisa Hansen, who, as part of her formation to become a deacon has been interning at St. Margaret’s, will be returning to St.

God bless you, Wayne+

MAY at St. Boniface Church

BISHOP’S VISIT Bishop Dabney Smith will visit St. Boniface Church on Sunday, May 14, at 6:00 p.m. for an adult baptism, confirmation and reception service, to include parishioners from St. Boniface and St. Margaret of Scotland. A reception will follow, all are welcome to attend.

MAY’S GIVING TREE May’s Giving Tree supports Sarasota’s Healthy Families program, working to halt the cycle of child abuse and neglect. The highly successful program teaches parenting skills and other tools to at-risk families with young children. Parents who participate earn “points” for necessities in the program’s “store.” To learn more about Healthy Families and how you can stock the “store,” pick a tag from the Tree in the Parish Hall during Coffee Hour, or in the church entry area, or visit our website. Your support encourages these families to continue in the program, receiving home visits from trained family service workers, learning parenting skills, getting well-baby check-ups, and receiving other support. Questions? Call parishioner Nancy Rafter (941-735-3174).

Can’t get to the Tree? The program welcomes receiving blankets or any type of baby blanket, bath towels – hooded or not, Onesies (one-piece baby outfits) or other outfits (size: newborn to 3-months), diapers (any size). Please place your (new, please!) donations under the Giving Tree in the Parish Hall by Sunday, May 28.

SUMMER GREETERS If you are here during the summer months of

June-September and are willing to be a Greeter

for the 10:00 am Sunday service please contact

Connie Mereness at 941-346-1844 or

[email protected].

MOMS, DADS & GRADS

Looking for something a little different to celebrate your mom, your dad or your new graduate? A commemorative brick makes a lasting tribute for Mother’s Day, Father’s Day or graduation day – or other special occasion. Create your own message to be permanently engraved on a brick, let us know which area of the Courtyard you’d like it placed, and we’ll do the rest. $125 per brick. Order forms are available in the church entry or on our website (www.bonifacechurch.org , type “brick” in the search box).

Each day our community uses 100 units of blood to meet the demands of surgery, burn victims and chemotherapy patients. Roll up your sleeves on Sunday, May

14 and help fill the demand! It’s quick, easy and (generally) painless. As long as you’re over 17, there’s no age limit – in fact half of all donations come from those 65 or older. To schedule your appointment time and avoid long waits, sign up at Coffee Hour. Child care available 8:45 – 11:00 for donors. Sunday, May 14, 8:30 – 12:00, in the church parking lot. For info contact Nancy Rafter (941-735-3174).

MITE BOXES for ERD During Lent, mite boxes provided a daily practice of providing for others from our own abundance with intentional offerings - over $1,200 was collected for Episcopal Relief & Development. Thank you!

SUNDAY MORNING STUDY GROUP

Each Sunday we gather at 9:00 a.m. in the St. Francis Room for lively discussion based on our mutually chosen book. Recent titles have included Mysteries of Faith, by Mark McIntosh; The Divine Dance - The Divinity and Your Transformation, by Richard Rohr; and Convictions - How I Learned What Matters Most, by Marcus J. Borg. This month, we take a break from reading to watch Richard Rohr’s video on contemplative prayer. So, the lively discussions will continue! We hope you’ll join us.

SPECIAL GIVING Each month, above and beyond our regular giving, we have an opportunity to support a specific aspect of or parish life at Saint Boniface. May’s giving decorates our altar on Mothers’ Day with an arrangement that celebrates Mothers on their special day. It also helps adorn our altar throughout the year with linens and other decoration that dignify and beautify our worship. Your gift may be given in tribute or memorial. Extra envelopes are available in the church entry area, or you may make your check payable to St. Boniface Church and note Mothers’ Day Flowers on the memo line. All gifts received by May 9th will be noted in the leaflet on Mother’s Day, May 14.

NURSERY VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Our nursery is open from 8:45 – 11:45 Sundays, although help is most needed from 9:45 – 11:45. If caring for the youngest among us is your calling, please contact the church office (941-349-5616). Our professional nursery care giver welcomes your help and love for youngsters.

PRESCHOOL NEWS Another year at our Preschool is coming to a close, with graduation on May 18 and our last day the 19th. Congratulations to our graduates David, Audrey, Zaile, Tanner, Fiona, Sonja, Sebastian, and Juliet, who will be moving up to Kindergarten! All are welcome to the ceremony at 7:00 p.m. in the Church.

We are gearing up for some summer camp fun with art, music, science, fitness, drama, and many more activities. Three sessions are being offered for children ages 1-5, and we’d love to have you join us! Contact Preschool Director, Sarah Schebel, 941-349-5616 x330 to register and learn more.

AND the Preschool is now registering for the 2017-2018 school year! Contact Sarah for details.

LIBRARY NOTES As the summer sets in and activities slow down there is more time to read and relax. Perhaps you would like to borrow a book from the St. Boniface Library? Visit the Library on Sundays and check out books written by our own talented authors, or choose a book from our collection of self-help or religious topics. The Library Team is in the process of creating a digital list of books housed in the library, and we look forward to having it on the St. Boniface Church website in early 2018. Happy reading! The Library Team

HEADING “HOME” FOR THE SUMMER?

unopened, non-perishable items to the church.

video-streaming! Visit the worship tab of our

website to watch live or later at your leisure.

FIGHTING CHILD HUNGER

This summer 40,000 children in our community will go hungry. St.

Summer Hunger, providing meal-filled backpacks for local children

this summer. For $160 you can give a hungry child in Sarasota or

Desoto County a WHOLE summer's worth of backpacks for $160.

Or, give any amount you choose and feed a child for part of the

summer. (Make your check payable to St Boniface and note “AFFB

“POUNDING” the GUYERS & EVANSES!

A long standing tradition of hospitality in the Church is to welcome new ministers and their families with a "pounding" - helping stock up their pantries with a pound of something. These days, poundings include cleaning and household items and gift cards to local restaurants, entertainment, home improvement stores, etc... Use your creativity and shop for both the Guyer family (6) and Evans family (4). We will be collecting these items throughout May in the narthex on Sundays or the office on weekdays. Be part of this practical celebration of hospitality! Questions? Contact Trish Farrell 941-922-4715 or [email protected].

HELPING UN-HOUSED FAMILIES and CHILDREN

Did you know nearly half of the homeless in our community are

families with children? And St. Boniface is part of the solution,

helping some of these families work their way back to

independence! Serving as a host congregation one week each

quarter, we provide shelter, meals and companionship – right

here on our campus! – to up to three families at a time in the

highly successful Family Promise program. These are

families who have found themselves without housing because of

illness, job loss, family upheaval or other crisis. Each host week

nearly 100 of your fellow parishioners rally to help set up the

guest families’ rooms and dining/lounge space, prepare meals,

wash bed linens, act as overnight or Saturday hosts (staying in

the Healing Mission with its on-site restroom), and simply to

enjoy getting to know these wonderful people and their

children. We invite you to join us! Our next host week is

May 21 – 28.

See www.familypromisesarasota.org to learn more, and contact

parishioners Ray and Lea Droege (941-346-7809) to volunteer.
