ST CHRISTOPHER is one of the most popular Saints of the East and West There are many legends concerning this Saint often confused and contradictory One of the most popular legends holds that St Christopher was a giant who helped people across a raging stream It is believed that he carried the Christ Child across this same stream Hence his name Christopher Christ-bearer He is the patron of motorists and is invoked against storms plagues etc He died a martyr during the reign of Decius in the 3rd century

PRAYER Almighty and ever-living God graciously pour out Your Spirit upon us Let our hearts be filled with that true love which enabled Your holy Martyr Christopher to overcome all bodily torments Amen

ST CHRISTOPHER Martyr The Same Day July 25mdashPatron of Motorists

My Dear Parishioners

On this 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time the scriptural texts presented for our reflection focus on the image of the good shep-

herd One of the characteristics of the kings of Israel was to be a good shepherd to the nation In the Prophet Jeremiahrsquos

chastisement of the monarch we see that the care of the sheep was not always a primary concern but rather the advancement

of selfish pursuits The Lord expected the kings to provide selfless and sacrificial care for those whom they were to lead

Todayrsquos Gospel shows us the Good Shepherd Godrsquos Only Begotten Son Our Lord Jesus Christ ldquoHe came and preached

peace to you who were far off and peace to those who were near for through Him we both have access in one Spirit to the

Fatherrdquo He came bringing good news of Godrsquos unconditional love for us which He demonstrated by His suffering and

death on the cross for our salvation The Gospel tells us of Jesusrsquo heart being moved as he observes the needs of the people

and He responds with pastoral care

Icons of Jesus the Good Shepherd are among the earliest paintings produced by Christians as evidenced in the catacombs

of ancient Rome and the house church at Dura Europus in Syria Jesus who tenderly holds and leads the sheep is the image

of pastoral care which the Church strives to mirror Sometimes the pastors of the Church fall short of this imitation and

many times they succeed Todayrsquos Scriptures provide us once again with the opportunity to remember all those engaged in

offering pastoral care especially our clergy religious sisters and parish lay staff Ministering to Godrsquos People in the man-

ner of the Good Shepherd is the mandate given by our Savior To remind myself and others of this care I placed a statue of

Christ the Good Shepherd in front of our parish office the place where pastoral care should be found I donated the statue in

memory of my parents Zigmund and Rose Peplowski who first showed me the importance of sacrificial love

As is evidenced in todayrsquos Gospel providing pastoral care is real work and Jesus noted that He and the Apostles needed

some time to rest before once again resuming their ministry The Gospel shows us that the work was never ending and that

the need was constant but rest is required The priests and many of the lay staff members are enjoying just a little bit of res-

pite during these summer days as meetings religious education classes etc are on a hiatus Time goes quickly and soon all

will begin again in full swing We do continue to minister during these summer days and provide the pastoral care which is

ongoing

Let us continue to encourage one another to participate in the Sunday celebration of the Eucharist when we are not away on

vacation Our presence and our offerings at the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass are powerful signs of our faith in Christ the Good

Shepherd who laid down His life for our salvation

God bless you

Father Zig

PS ndashIn case you have missed me I have been celebrating the Divine Liturgy at Saint Ann Church in Woodland Park and

Saint Demetrius Church in Cliff Side Park Both parishes are part of the Melkite Greek Catholic Eparchy (Diocese) The

priest is away on vacation and I have been asked to substitute I have biritual faculties from the Holy See to assist in the
