This week we would like to acknowledge our good friend, Charles Benn, for all of his contributions to the parish as member of finance council. After 15 years of service to the parish in this capacity, Charles has announced that he will be retiring from this role. Charles has generously volunteered his time and talent, attending monthly meetings, reviewing financials, and providing insights and perspectives as a contributor to the steer of our council and subsequent guidance to our parish clergy over this time. All of us as members of finance council are most appreciative of his perspectives, ideas, and advice as we evolved our internal technical capabilities. While he relinquishes responsibilities on this council, Charles remains a parishioner and therefore he is not going too far away from us! On behalf of finance council, we thank Charles for his support and extend best wishes to Charles and his family.

2020 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL – SEEING CHRIST

IN THE FACES OF OTHERS “The Annual Catholic Appeal, with its theme, Seeing Christ in the Faces of Others invites each of us to open our eyes and recognize Him in those who seek our help. It is a reminder of the parable when Jesus said that “whatever you did for one of these least brothers of mine, you did for me.” (Matthew 25:40) That verse was a favorite of St. Teresa of Calcutta, who said, “I see Jesus in every human being”. Within the next few days, you may receive a mailing from Bishop Malooly inviting your participation in the Annual Catholic Appeal. For those of you who have given to this year’s Appeal, thank you for your generosity. For those who have not, please prayerfully consider supporting this important effort. In the meantime, you are encouraged to learn more about the Annual Catholic Appeal by visiting www.cdow.org/annualcatholicappeal. Please view the brief video offering inspiring testimony from recipients of featured Appeal supported ministries. A direct link to video can be found at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80gz5V5VaH8&t=2s.

The Word in Our Lives Readings for June 7, 2020

The Most Holy Trinity

First Reading: Exodus 34:4b-6, 8-9 Early in the morning Moses went up Mount Sinai as the LORD had commanded him, taking along the two stone tablets. Having come down in a cloud, the LORD stood with Moses there and proclaimed his name, "LORD." Thus the LORD passed before him and cried out, "The LORD, the LORD, a merciful and gracious God, slow to anger and rich in kindness and fidelity." Moses at once bowed down to the ground in worship. Then he said, "If I find favor with you, O Lord, do come along in our company. This is indeed a stiff-necked people; yet pardon our wickedness and sins, and receive us as your own." Responsorial Psalm: Daniel 3:52, 53, 54, 55, 56 Second Reading: 2 Corinthians 13:11-13 Brothers and sisters, rejoice. Mend your ways, encourage one another, agree with one another, live in peace, and the God of love and peace will be with you. Greet one another with a holy kiss. All the holy ones greet you. The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with all of you. Gospel: John 3:16-18 God so loved the world that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him might not perish but might have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through him. Whoever believes in him will not be condemned, but whoever does not believe has already been condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the only Son of God.

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION AND SACRAMENT PREPARATION NEWS!

Registration forms for Religious Education and the sacraments of Reconciliation, First Eucharist and Confirmation will be available on the parish website, www.stjosephmiddletown.com on Monday, March 2nd. Religious Education registrations are accepted from registered parishioners on a first-come, first-served basis until August 31, 2020. No registrations will be accepted after August 31, 2020, except from families that are relocating to our parish, moving from their existing religious education program to our program. In order to ensure both the accuracy of our records and the safety of our students, we will be unable to process any registration that does not include all required information, payment, and/or documentation. Incomplete registrations will be returned. If your child has completed grade one, either in our Religious Education program or in Catholic school, and is enrolling in grade two, you must complete a separate form to register for the sacramental preparation program for Reconciliation and Eucharist. This is a separate process from Religious Education class registration and has a separate schedule and fee. The Confirmation preparation program also has a separate registration form, schedule and fee. In conjunction with the Diocese, we also offer a Special Needs Religious Education program. Contact the Religious Education Office at 302.378.5800, ext. 107 for further information. St. Joseph Parish has one of the largest Religious Education programs in our diocese. We are always in need of volunteers and gratefully welcome those that are willing to share their time, talent and faith. We look forward to working with you and your family.

MARRIAGE MOMENTS Does your marriage sometimes feel like each of you speaking but not understanding each other? Take time today to really listen to and understand each other.

PARENTING POINTERS Discuss the many different jobs that people in your family do? Which is the most important? Wrong question - since each person has different talents and time. Is it time to reassess who does which jobs?

Your Council in action: donations of the

breaded fish were made to Emmanuel Dining Room of Wilmington and Sisters of the Poor in Newark.

Reflecting on Pentecost: The work of the Church began with the gift of the Holy Spirit on Pentecost. See how the Knights have joined in. Check kofc.org and look for “Into the Breach.”

Remember the Knights are encouraged to pray the Rosary daily. It is like a pilgrimage into the life of Jesus and we enjoy Mary’s loving protection.

Want to join our Council? Contact any Brother Knight or GK Marty Brett at [email protected].

WEDNESDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY—POSTPONED

The Wednesday Morning Bible Study meets weekly at 9:30 am in the Parish Center. Come join us as we discuss the readings for the upcoming Sundays. Any questions, please call 302-378-5800.

DID YOU KNOW... in first century Palestine one of the seven Jewish feasts was the “day of first fruits.” More formally it was the Festival of Weeks and was linked to the first harvest. It was celebrated seven weeks and one day after the first Sabbath of the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Hence we get the word Pentecost (fiftieth). The Church also celebrates Pentecost as a Feast of First Fruits. What were those first fruits? The Apostles filled with the Holy Spirit now preached boldly. There was a miracle of “hearing” as Jews from many nations all heard them speaking of Christ in their own native language. There were many converts, about 3,000 that same day. The Church launched into action and The Good News of Christ began to spread throughout the known world. We have been reading about this every day since Easter in the Book of Acts. How did it spread so fast? The power of God, by the Holy Spirit, was unleashed in the Apostles. They persisted in preaching even in the face of persecution and opposition. Go back and read the whole story in the Book of Acts, a history of the beginning of the Church.

SEEKING BASIC NEEDS HELP DURING THE COVID-19 CRISIS? Living paycheck to paycheck? Worried about what will happen if you don't receive a paycheck for a week or two? Many working families now find themselves only one or two paychecks away from a utility disconnection, eviction, or homelessness. Reduced work hours/layoffs, and the need to continue paying your bills is a sobering reality during the current pandemic. Catholic Charities Basic Needs Program helps families and individuals who need help maintaining their self-sufficiency. This program not only lends a hand to deal with the immediate need, but also provides budget counseling, financial coaching, additional program information, and referrals to other services to prevent future emergencies. If you are facing overdue rent, mortgage, or utility bills, help is available. Jointly, you will work with an experienced case manager to identify opportunities, to help you achieve self-sufficiency. Working together, you will create a plan of action to help meet your goals. If you have become homeless, the Rapid Rehousing Service will help you find and secure safe, affordable housing. Once rehoused, you can continue to work with your Rapid Rehousing Service case manager to create a plan for self-sufficiency. Your plan will include case management services and other supports to help find income, receive assistance in obtaining food, clothing, and learn about other helpful resources.
