SAINT JOSEPH GIRL SCOUTS RECEIVE AWARD

Members of Girl Scout Troop #5571 (4th and 5th graders at Saint Joseph School) received the "I Live My Faith" award from Reverend Timothy Graff at the Cathedral Basilica of the Sacred Heart in Newark on March 4. The award recognizes work done by the girls since September as they explored their Catholic Faith. “I Live My Faith” is a nationally recognized program that focuses on the themes of Belief, Sacraments, Catholic Christian Living, and Prayer. The girls of Troop #5571 (shown opposite and led by Saint Joseph parishioner Gina Barnes) were among only 41 girls throughout the entire Archdiocese to receive the award at this ceremony.

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER ~ APRIL 15, 2018

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

The actor and playwright Noël Coward was one of many wealthy Englishmen who relocated abroad to escape crushingly high

tax rates imposed by his country. When he moved to Switzerland, a reporter sent to interview him asked him why he was doing so, and Coward replied that he was “devoted to chocolates.” This year’s tax returns are due this Tuesday. Taxes, of course, are nothing new. I thought you might be curious about what they were like in the time Jesus lived on earth. The Romans insisted on a variety of taxes, both direct and indirect. They would assess districts a certain amount, which would then be collected by publicans (tax farmers), private contractors who were obliged to extract from the people an amount Rome assigned, an arrangement that allowed them to enrich themselves by gathering revenue that exceeded what they had to turn over to the empire, something they were free to do. The Gospels usually call them sinners (see, among other passges, Lk 5, 30; 7, 34; 15, 1; 18, 11 and especially 19, 1-10, the account of Jesus’s encounter with Zacchaeus, who is movingly won over to the Lord’s ways.) It would be hard to improve on this system as a means for incentivizing greed and injustice. The Romans required Judea, the area that included Jerusalem, to pay 600 talents of silver, about 18 tons. Landowners paid with their produce according to the size of their holdings at an approximate rate of 10% a year. Non-landowners paid based on a declaration of the value of their personal possessions. This necessitated a census, which is why Joseph and Mary reported to Joseph’s ancestral city of Bethlehem at the time Jesus was born (see Lk 2, 1-5). The tax on the estimated 250,000 working males under Roman rule in Palestine was the equivalent of three weeks’ work a year, a heavy burden for the numerous poor. Rome’s indirect taxes, also administered by the tax farmers, included customs duties, which were high in Palestine, and fees merchants were charged to enter cities with their goods. Only cargoes destined for the great Temple in Jerusalem were exempt from these taxes. Undeclared goods were subject to confiscation by the tax farmers’ agents, who also enjoyed the power of determining the value of the merchandise. The Biblical scholar Thomas E. Schmidt, describing their tendency to station themselves near the more important commercial centers, says that “in these locations of large-scale exchange, tax collectors gathered—and were esteemed—like flies.” The typical

(continued above)

customs tax was an estimated 2-5%, but merchants’ goods were subject to multiple hits during their transportation. Popular resentment about Roman taxes and operatives was all the more seething,

Schmidt says, because “an occupation that depends for success on suspicion, intrusion, harassment and force tends not to attract the most pleasant personalities,” besides being “a painful symbol of conquest” by a foreign power. There were also taxes of Jewish imposition. The Temple tax (see Mt 17, 24) of 2 denarii a year, the equivalent of two days’ wages for an agricultural worker, was

paid by men 20 and older even if they lived abroad. Interestingly, the Roman army provided security for the transportation of the money that was collected outside the Holy Land. There were also tolls at bridges, gates and crossroads as well as tithes, which were usually paid in kind. They were collected for the birth of a first-born child, for a first harvest or for aid to the poor (see Dt 14, 26-27). Tithes on livestock supported the Levites, the Temple workers who provided music, sacristan services and the approximately 9,600 police and guards who had security responsibilities. Benjamin Franklin’s famous remark that “In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes” could have accurately described New Testament times.

Msgr. David Hubba

GET WELL SOON, MONSIGNOR! We are happy to report that Monsignor Hubba’s surgery last Monday went very well. We wish him a speedy recovery. He extends his thanks to everyone for their prayers and good thoughts. Monsignor has graciously provided us with a number of “From the Pastor’s Desk” columns so that we will not miss his presence or his wisdom in our parish bulletin during his recovery. But hurry back, Monsignor, because we do miss you!

WITH OUR SYMPATHY

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our dearly loved school crossing guard, John Jennings, whose post of many years was right in front of our church on Elm Street. We will forever be indebted to John for keeping our children safe, and we will never

forget his warm smile and his never failing kindness. John, originally from County Galway, Ireland, resided in River Edge with his dear wife Kathleen. They were blessed with five children and seventeen grandchildren. Visitation was at Volk-Leber Funeral Home in Oradell and a Mass of Christian Burial was held on April 7 at St. Peter the Apostle Church in River Edge.

May eternal rest grant unto his soul, O Lord, and may he rest in peace.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “Jesus himself stood among them and said to them,

‘Peace be with you.’ But they were startled and frightened… .” LUKE 24: 36-27

Throughout the day we have many opportunities to “see the face of Jesus” in others and to “be the face of Jesus” to others. Do we take the opportunity to provide “peace” to those we encounter or are we afraid of what others will think of us and do nothing? Pray for the strength to live a “God-centered” life and not a “self-centered” life.
