A TRIBUTE TO OUR PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY

Saint Joseph’s Prayer Shawl Ministry has donated over one hundred prayer shawls, lap blankets, hats and scarves to Life Source Hospice. The handcrafted items were delivered to those in need at the Wanaque Health and Rehabilitation Center following their Valentine celebration. It was a wonderful event and the smiles on the faces of those who received these gifts, many of them children, was a blessing to all.

The care and the love of knitting and crocheting have been combined into a prayerful ministry that reaches out to those in need of comfort and solace. Many blessings accompany each shawl.

The knitter begins each shawl with prayers for the recipient. Intentions are continued throughout the creation of the shawl. When the shawl is completed, it is offered a final blessing [by our own Deacon George] before being sent along its way. Life Source Hospice wishes to give heartfelt thanks for all the work these ladies have put into the shawls. We are looking forward to continue working with Saint Joseph’s Prayer Shawl Ministry in the future.

Sincerely, Angela Marsh 230 E. Ridgewood Ave. Paramus, NJ

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that be God’s will, than for doing evil.” 1 PETER 3:17 The old line says “if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans.” Many of us are diligent in our planning, making sure things are progressing smoothly, then disaster strikes, we don’t get the result that was intended. An unforeseen problem arises. Many times we may respond negatively. Why me? I did everything right! Here’s the thing—God has a different and better plan in store for you.

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

St. Rita of Cascia (1377-1457), whose feast day is Monday, may not be one of the most famous saints, but she has a great deal of human appeal and generates considerable

sympathy from those who get to know the story of her life. The daughter of peasant parents from the Umbria region of Italy, at age 16 she wished to become a nun, but her parents had other plans for her future and arranged for her to marry Paolo Mancini, a man who possessed some wealth. Unfortunately, he was unfaithful to her and also had a terrible temper, which Rita endured for eighteen years of a marriage that produced two sons. Paolo’s ways, not surprisingly, gained him a number of enemies and the result of this was that he wound up being murdered. Rita’s sons were determined to avenge his killing, but died in an epidemic before they could do so. Free of family responsibilities now, Rita pursued her earlier intention of entering religious life. But things never seemed to happen easily for her, and she was refused entry to the convent three times before the Augustinian Sisters of Cascia finally accepted her in 1413. For the next forty years, Rita was an exemplary nun. She was very prayerful, excelled in obedience and mortification, took loving care of the sick nuns of her community and was often sought out for advice by many local people who visited the convent. In her prayers, Rita was intensely devoted to the sufferings Our Lord endured and, one day, when praying before the crucifix acquired a kind of stigmata when a thorn fell from it and became embedded in her head, giving her a wound that resembled Jesus’s injury from the crown of thorns.

(continued above)

This is depicted in the portrait painted on her sarcophagus that can be seen in the monastery at Cascia that is now named after her. A lovely contemporary poem is inscripted on her casket:

Blessed by God, You were a light in darkness through your steadfast courage when you had to suffer such agony upon the cross. You turned aside from this vale of tears to seek wholeness for your hidden wounds in the great passion of Christ. … You were not content with less than perfect healing, and so endured the thorn for fifteen years before you entered into the joy of your Lord. A notary at Casica recorded eleven healing miracles that occurred within days of Rita’s death from tuberculosis on May 22, 1457. Popular affection for Rita has led to her being invoked as a saint to turn to in difficult cases, especially ones having to do with married life. For some reason I have not been able to track down, she is also regarded as the patron saint of grocers and salami merchants. Each year at the grounds of her shrine, there is a blessing of motorbikes, whose riders ask her to protect them and offer her red roses. This charming custom is connected with something that reportedly happened when Rita was in her final illness. She requested a rose from her parents’ garden—and a single red one, found growing there out of season, was brought to her. Several of our parishioners have motorcycles. I get nervous when I drive in back of motorcycles, because I’m afraid that, if they have an accident, I might not be able to stop quickly enough to keep from doing their riders further harm. From now on, I’m going to say a little prayer to St. Rita for the safety of motorcyclists when I see them.

SAINT JOSEPH CHURCH ORADELL/NEW MILFORD, NJ

“CATHOLICISM” Join us again on Wednesday, May 24 at 9:30 am in the Jackson Room of the lower church for the next episode of this remarkable series. There is no cost. Episode 9: “The Life of His Love: Prayer and the Life of the Spirit On pilgrimage to the places where the great saints and spiritual masters lived, Bishop Barron explores the different types of prayer: contemplation, adoration, petition and intercession. In telling the stories of Catholics like (shown below left to right) Thomas Merton, St. Teresa of Avila and St. John of the Cross,

Bishop Barron demonstrates how the human person can be

transformed through prayer that manifests a deep, spiritual commitment centered in Christ.

YOUTH GROUP The Archdioceses of Newark Pilgrimage to the 2017 National Catholic Youth Conference (NCYC) in Indianapolis, IN, will be on November 15 - 19, 2017. It is a powerful, three-day experience of prayer, community, and empowerment for Catholic teenagers. It would take too much space in the bulletin to explain it, but if you email me I will send you a booklet that will give you the details including the cost and more. Please feel free to contact me for more information, I have been to several of these events and have found them enjoyable for teens and adults alike. —Donna Cirino, Youth Minister

STATEMENT FROM ARCHDIOCESE REGARDING VETERANS FLAGS

The staff of Catholic Cemeteries of the Archdiocese of Newark empathize with grieving families who wish to add temporary, personal

items to the memorials of their departed loved ones. We do not remove permanent monuments or affixed memorialization from any headstone. However, certain cemetery decorations are not permitted since they may present a safety hazard to our visitors and grounds workers. Wooden, glass, plastic or metal items, especially when not permanently affixed to a headstone, can easily become a tripping hazard or a serious threat when airborne from lawn equipment. We have an obligation to all the families we serve and to the loved ones interred at our cemeteries to maintain a consistent standard of reverence, safety and appearance around our property. Signs are posted at all locations to notify visitors of routine seasonal clean-up of decorations so families have ample time to remove items they wish to keep. The cemetery staff holds removed personal items for a reasonable period so families may retrieve them. It is not our intention to upset or offend any family or individual. We honor and cherish our fallen heroes and veterans, and remember them throughout the year during monthly Masses, Veteran’s Day, Flag Day, and certainly on Memorial Day. Flags are flown daily in designated areas over all Archdiocesan Cemeteries to honor those presently serving and those who have served. Additionally, we place more than one thousand American flags at the memorials of veterans interred at our Catholic Cemeteries for Memorial Day, and those flags remain through Flag Day. All are invited to visit the graves of our fallen heroes as we pray for all our departed loved ones at Memorial Day Mass on Monday, May 29 at 11:00 am. (Please see article above.)
