TWENTY FIFTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ SEPTEMBER 24, 2017

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

CELEBRATE 100TH ANNIVERSARY

OF THE MIRACLE AT FATIMA

—OCTOBER 13 6:00 PM AT THE GROTTO

This coming October 13 commemorates the final apparition of Our Lady of Fatima as well as the great "Miracle of the Sun" that took place in Fatima, Portugal on October 13, 1917. Our Lady, who appeared to three shepherd children, left us a message to pray always,

pray the Rosary, read Scripture, and receive the Sacraments so that we can grow closer to her Son. Let us try to live this message by joining our parish in a special program on Friday, October 13 at 6:00 pm in the Grotto next to the church (on Harrison

Street) that will include an outdoor rosary procession plus an indoor program in the Upper Church with a guest speaker, music and prayer before the Blessed Sacrament. Refreshments will be served afterwards (approx. 7:15 pm) in Mary’s Chapel. EVERYONE IS INVITED TO PARTICIPATE IN THIS HISTORIC EVENT IN HONOR OF OUR BLESSED MOTHER.

The actor David Niven once paid a visit to his friend Errol Flynn, the Australian who was one of the greatest movie stars of his era, not long before Flynn’s death. Flynn had spent

many years in dissipated escapades—some of the most notorious in the history of Hollywood—and had experienced many burdensome tax woes, but now he seemed very relaxed. He said to Niven, “I’ve discovered a great book, and I read it all the time…. It’s the Bible.” In Catholic understanding, the Bible is a collection of 73 books the Church has recognized as its own, which truly communicate what God wishes to tell us about for the sake of our salvation. We believe that these books are a collaboration between God, who inspired them, and their various human authors, some known to us and some unidentifiable, who have their own individual styles, human backgrounds and experiences. Whether the human authors of Scripture write history, poetry, or insights on how to live wisely, they were guided and helped by God to teach us what will lead us to lives of fulfillment and meaning. As the great 19th-century Danish writer Søren Kierkegaard urged us to keep in mind:

When you read God’s word, you must constantly be saying to yourself, “It is talking to me, and about me.”

Our Church continually advises us to read the Bible and take advantage of the immense richness it contains, especially its nourishment for the life of prayer. Even if we devote just a few minutes to its use each day, the rewards that will come our way will be many. Today’s Bibles are available in many fine, easily readable translations. The main Catholic ones are the New American Bible (the translation used for our public worship), the Jerusalem Bible and the Catholic edition of the Revised Standard Version. Most editions of these translations have a helpful apparatus of introductions and footnotes that explain many details that might otherwise puzzle us because of the cultural differences between our own times and those of the biblical writers.

Each year about fifty of our parishioners take part in Bible study sessions that use solid and interesting materials published by Ascension Press. Consider joining them to gain further insights into God’s beautiful outreach to us through Scripture. As the Second Vatican Council’s

Constitution on Divine Revelation reminds us: (continued above)

In the sacred books the Father who is in Heaven meets his children in great love and speaks with them; and the force and power in the word of God is so great that it remains the support and energy of the Church, the strength of faith for her sons, the food of the soul, the pure and perennial source of spiritual life.

MINISTRY OF MOTHERHOOD ("M.O.M.")

FALL KICK-OFF—SEPT. 27 Ministry of Motherhood warmly in-vites all mothers to join in our monthly

prayer gathering. Our first meeting will be held Wednesday, September 27th, 7:30 - 9:00 pm at the Saint Joseph Parish Life Center on Grove St. (behind the lower school). M.O.M. aims to provide mothers with an opportunity to meet, pray, reflect and share the bless-ings and challenges of motherhood in a fun, no-pressure setting. This growing ministry provides a place for moms to take a time-out from the craziness of every day to recharge our spiritual batteries. No membership or fees required, just a desire to deepen your relationship with God. Coffee & tea and snacks will be served. If you have any questions or would like to be added to our email list for reminders about our upcoming meetings, please email us at [email protected] or call/text Maureen Hunt 908-770-2969. We hope to see you there!

THE FUTURE OF OUR CHURCH DEPENDS ON YOU!

CATECHISTS URGENTLY NEEDED FOR GRADES 7-8

Is God calling you to share our beloved Catholic faith with the young people of Saint Joseph Parish? Without people like yourself who love God and our Church and are willing to give a little of their time and talent, the next generation will not have the wonderful relation-ship you have with Jesus Christ. Please prayerfully consider volunteering with our young teens as they journey toward the Sacrament of Confirmation. If you can help, please call Deacon George or Mrs. Kennedy at 201-261-1144 or email at [email protected] or [email protected]

“The Church needs your enthusiasm, your creativity and the joy

that is so characteristic of you.”...Pope Francis

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION “So the last will be first and the first last.”

MATT 20:16

You’ve heard the saying “it’s not where you start, but how you finish.” This certainly applies to this Bible passage. We have a responsibility not only for our own lives, but for the lives of others as well. We are called to generously share our gifts with others, not hoard them for our own use. Our gratitude and generosity helps us live “God-centered” lives and not “self-centered” lives.
