Fourth Sunday of Easter April 22, 2018

A True Servant of God Early in the morning of April 9 we lost a true servant of God, Deacon Carlos Simon Valentin, at the age of 40. I want to share with all members of our two parishes some of what I spoke in my homily at his funeral on Tuesday, April 17. Deacon Simon left behind his wife, Angelica, and two sons Nick and Angel. Please pray for them and also for all his extended parish family who grieve his death.

Our hearts are heavy today, heavy with sorrow at the death of Deacon Simon Valentin. To many of us he was a friend and brother. To all he was a true servant of God. It is very hard to let go of him. But now God calls us to trust him in his plan for us. As I have been thinking about him and praying for him, I have come to realize much better the gift that he was. So today I believe God wants us to appreciate the life he gave to us, as well as surrender him to the Lord he loved and served so faithfully. I knew Simon for many years, before and after his ordina-tion as a permanent deacon on September 20, 2014. God spoke through him a clear and consistent message to us. We will find true happiness by loving the Lord, by caring for our families, and by coming together as family with God at the table of the Lord. Loving the Lord. Being a very regular guy, loving peo-ple and sports (especially the Seahawks) as he did, Simon had to learn, like us, that he would find his greatest happi-ness in loving the Lord. Once he discovered this, began to seek a way that could deepen and express his love for Jesus. He found a community at Saint John the Baptist parish where that love could be nurtured. Slowly but sure-ly he realized he had a call to serve the Lord he loved as a deacon in the Catholic Church. Candidates for the diaco-nate often start this journey later in life but Simon's love for the Lord was so strong that he was able to convince the Archdiocese of Boston that he was ready at a young age to take on a long program of formation even while he was working and raising a family. Adding to the test of his faith and devotion to the Lord was his struggle with diabetes and later the need for a kidney transplant which he would find in his fellow pastoral companion, Dawn Alves. Yet nothing - the demands of work and study or any human illness - could weaken his resolve to serve the Lord he loved. He drew inspiration from his mentor, Dea-con Valentin Rivera, who was much loved in both the American and Hispanic community at Saint John's for his simple, dedicated way of caring for the people of God. When Deacon Valentin was called home to God, it

was as if God assured Simon that he would, like Elijah to Elisha, give a portion of his spirit to the one who would succeed him. And he did! Caring for our families. Simon loved his family as much as any man I have known. He was so dedicated to caring for Angelica, Nick and Angel. More than his own love, he taught them the love of God and how to believe and trust in God. At the same time, Simon did not think of his family only as those who lived with him at home or who were related by blood. In his heart there was also a much larger family, joined to him by the Blood of the Lord. He felt a special call to help married couples and those preparing for marriage to recognize and rely on God's grace in this sacrament. His family circle began in the Hispanic community of Saint John's. But it never stopped there. He became a brother to everyone he met. He went on an men's ACTS retreat and discovered a new band of brothers from St. John's, St. Thomas and beyond. As a member of an ACTS team he went out and got every Hispanic brother he could find to bring them into this newer, ever expanding family. Coming together as family with God at the table of the Lord. The last Mass at which Deacon Simon served with me as deacon was on Holy Thursday, the Mass of the Lord's Supper. This Mass recalls the last supper at which Jesus washed the feet of his apostles, and then broke bread with them, instituting the gift of the Eucharist: the Body and Blood of the Lord. There was such enthusiasm and joy in him that night, after he had carefully planned and prepared everything. This Mass brought together His-panic and American people, young and old, poor and rich. Simon had a most beautiful and inspiring love of the Eu-charist. He realized that in this sacrament of the altar, which he so loved to contemplate in adoration, Jesus nourishes his Father's vision of one people of every race and nation. Here Simon's love of the Lord and his care for his human and spiritual family all came together. How deeply he wanted the diverse peoples of our parishes to grow together into a fuller expression of the Body of Christ, united in one peace and in one mission to bring Christ to the world. As we pray for Simon and God's ultimate gift for him of eternal life and peace, let us take from his life the gift the Lord gave to us in him. Jesus said "Here am I in your midst as one who serves." Pray that we too may find our happiness in loving the Lord, in building up the family he is growing in and around us, here at the table of the Lord. Well done, good and faithful servant!

God bless. Fr. JohnFr. JohnFr. JohnFr. John

Fourth Sunday of Easter April 22, 2018

Padre John

Fourth Sunday of Easter April 22, 2018

Bem feito, servo bom e fiel!

Deus abençoe. Pe. John

Mensagem do Papa Bento XVI no Quarto Domingo da Pascoa de 2011. Tradicionalmente, sempre se proclama a passagem do Bom Pastor no Evangelho.

* * *

Dear Parishioners,

The adult choir is singing at the 4:00 p.m. Mass at St. John’s, and all parish-ioners in both parishes are welcome to join us! We meet at 3:15 p.m. to rehearse. We can use all voice types, and all ages are encouraged to come and sing! If you are an instrumentalist and would enjoy playing, please contact Dr. Holly Zagaria at [email protected].

The outreach program at St. John’s is now accepting ALL seasons of ALL clothing for men and women. To further assist our brothers and sisters in Christ, we are partic-ularly in need of: NEW ONLY: white crew/ankle socks and

toiletries of any type, especially deodorant, bars of soap, and small packages of Kleenex tissues GENTLY USED: jeans, belts, sandals, and light jackets/sweatshirts, for men AND women. This spring we will be hosting an “open house”, inviting pa-rishioners and contributors to visit our distribution center, lo-cated on the second floor of the St. John’s Thrift Shop building. Our volunteers look forward to giving a tour of the center soon, in order that you may get a better sense of the actual out-reach that is occurring to help those in need in our community. We hope you will join us at that time! Stay tuned for more de-tails in the upcoming weeks! Thank you kindly for your countless ways of help and support, as our outreach program continues to provide what we can to alleviate significant burdens of everyday life. As always, you may drop off donations to the St. John’s Parish Center, Monday to Friday, from 9:30 to 3:30pm, OR a plastic bin marked : For Friday Outreach may be found in the left side of the foyer of the upper church. Parishioners at St. Thomas may continue to bring donations to the Spiritual Center during the weekdays. Please call Outreach Coordinator Pat Adam at 978-335-2080 for further information.

FLU PRECAUTIONS. The Archdiocese has rescinded its restriction in light of a decline of flu in some areas. In light of the ongoing risk of flu which is higher in some places than others, we ask you to follow these sim-ple precautions at Mass at this time: (1) Please limit the sign of peace: A simple friendly wave is appropriate in place of a hand-shake. (2) Please receive the host in your hand if possible to avoid another person's contact with your tongue which does happen. (3) Please do not drink from the cup if you have symp-toms of illness. Remember that you are not required to drink from the chalice.

Thank you for being mindful of others in all the ways we interact with one another.
