Twenty-First Sunday in Ordinary Time | August 23, 2020 | Page 2

Congratulations to our first communion class from St. Mary, Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish. Eleven made their first communion last Saturday plus one last Wednesday. They were Asher Bowser, Brennan Chapman, Carsten Colberg, William Cravenor, Liliana McGaughey, Grace Meighan, Sydney Miklos, Janae Monroe, Leo Shotts, Raife Swartz, Marie Webb and Chase Vukovich.

During their first communion, I encouraged them to have a personal friendship with Jesus so they will know Jesus deeper and they will grow in faith as they go along with their journey. I also asked the parents to continue to be their inspiration in living out the faith because if they do not see them practicing the faith, neither will they be encouraged to practice their faith. For instance, if parents do not come to the Church for Sunday or holy day, they will not come also. However, if parents go regularly to the Church and pray, they will learn to value the faith and the importance of coming to the Church. Their knowledge of Jesus and understanding of the faith will not just be confined to the reception of the sacraments but also in prayer and the Scriptures.

St. Jerome once said that ignorance of Scripture is ignorance of Christ and that is true. In this Sunday’s gospel, Jesus asked His disciples how people perceived Him? He was in the region of Caesaria Philippi where people had several encounters with Him already but to His surprise people have different perception about Him. Some said He was John the Baptist, others Elijah, still others Jeremiah or one of the prophets.

How did they arrive into different answers? It was because their encounter of Jesus was limited. They based their knowledge only on what they saw and heard. Unlike the disciples when Jesus asked them, Peter gave him a profound answer and have known his identity deeper as Christ, the Son of the living God to which Jesus acknowledged it and said, “Blessed are you Simon, son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. How did Peter come up with it? It is because of his personal encounter and journey with Jesus. Peter followed and journeyed with Him and that is where he came to know Jesus that He was not just a teacher but also the Christ, the Son of the living God.

Because of that profession, Jesus built His Church upon his rock and in a symbolic way handed down to him the keys of the kingdom of heaven and gave the authority to govern. What a great privilege Peter had received!

In our faith journey, we can also receive blessing even a surprise more than what we deserve if we know Jesus Christ intimately, profess it and live it out faithfully. By doing so, we give witness to the world of who we are and who knows, we inspire others to know and get closer to Jesus.

Father Ron

To stand in the presence of God is to stand

in the presence of incomprehensible

mystery. We are people of proofs and facts.

With good reason, we are becoming more

doubtful of what presents itself to us, as

technology makes it easy to fabricate false

images and distort what is actually true.

What we think is real actually may not be.

We become skeptical. Does this skepticism

affect our relationship with God? To have

faith in God means that we must be willing to

trust in the absence of full knowledge. To

know the mind of God means we would

know God himself, and that is impossible. To

acknowledge Jesus as the Christ means we

acknowledge that the reality and presence of

an incarnate God has a fundamental claim

on who we are. When we name this truth,

we participate in a depth of knowledge that

stretches us far beyond the scope of

our minds. It brings us to silence, which is

the only way to touch our soul.

Annual Diocesan Collection for the Benefit of

The Catholic University of America and Catholic

Schools in the Diocese of Greensburg

Next Weekend - August 29 & 30

The Catholic University of America is unique among the Catholic institutions of higher education as the national university for the Catholic Church in the United States. Its mission is to prepare future leaders for the Church and the nation who are formed in the Catholic tradition that faith and the intellectual life enhance each other. This year fifty percent of this collection will be used to aid the Catholic schools here in our own Diocese where parents of students in our 12 schools sacrifice to send their children to a Catholic school because they recognize how important academics and Catholic values are to their child’s lifelong success. Our Catholic schools are centered in Christ's teachings and Catholic doctrine. We recognize that each student is created with unique talents and intellect. Please give generously!

Anyone interested in helping as a classroom support aide in our primary grades, please contact our office at 724-763-3761. Thank you!

Catholic Charities Offers Virtual Counseling

Social distancing can take a toll. So can waiting in line to get into a grocery or hardware store. It’s not unusual to feel angry, or frustrated, or confused. For some people, the pandemic restrictions can magnify feelings of

anxiety, depression, interpersonal conflict, grief and a wide variety of other issues. Catholic Charities provides virtual counseling to help address those issues and more. Taking care of your own emotional well-being is

very important to you and the people you love. You don’t need to face these feelings alone. Call Catholic Charities at 724-837-1840 or email [email protected].
