Notes From The Pastor's Pen Happy New Year,
I received a Christmas card from my best friend from high school the other day, normally both of us are kind of late on them and we receive each other’s after Christ-mas but I have to say I got his written and mailed so he should have received his about now also (this is a few days before Christmas that I’m writing this). He is one of those friends that most years we don’t see or hear from each other more than once or twice a year anymore, but we do write a long letter to at Christmas time. I was reminded when I was writing to him of Hurricane Harvey, as he lives in Galveston, TX, towards the gulf from Houston. One of the regrets from the last year was that I should have con-tacted him during the flooding to see how they were doing, I know they hadn’t been hurt by storms in the past, but Harvey was different (they had no flooding or water damage at their home), that’s one of the things I should do different next year.
Of course he wrote about his oldest son who went off to college this year and his youngest son who just entered high school, but his letter obviously had a bunch about Harvey. The biggest part was about his wife, Jodi, and how well she did at helping oth-ers affected by the flooding. He mentioned how a group of friends would go to one of their homes that needed to be cleaned out, all the wet things removed, and quickly to avoid mold. And inevitably while they were there they would find a stranger in the ar-ea that also needed help and go there next. Jodi was quickly recognized as the leader because she was decisive and knew things had to be taken care of, but she could also talk with the people who live there, getting their approval/direction, and help them through what needed to get done and get it done. Special qualities Jodi had that came together perfectly for this situation that made her captain of their recovery team.
And Jodi was impressed with the high school kids and all they did. Especially just sending one off to college she knew the focus on college applications and resumes and yet none of the kids were worried about documenting their help as service work, they were clearly there to help people that they could.
Writing to him, and thinking of Harvey, made me remember that we didn’t have a natural disaster this year but were blessed with a different type of natural event that got all of our attention, the eclipse. Or as we realize here what was important was the ‘path of totality’ and how long you were in it. It was such a big topic in the summer, how did we let it affect our lives that still matters today?
As we look back over the past year what do we remember the most, the tragedies or the selfless acts that people did in response to them? Do we focus on what we missed or the blessings we received? For most of us there were challenges and sadness, but also joy and love. Especially as we celebrate New Years in the Christmas season hope-fully we can reflect on the past and see the many ways God was with us through this last year, and be ready to see the opportunities to receive him and to bring him to others in the year to come. Have a Happy New Year.
Peace, Fr. Nick

Parish School of Religion Update Merry Christmas! Remember the Christmas season continues until the Baptism of the Lord on January 8th. Leave up the decorations! Celebrate the gift of the Incarnation, this is the ultimate gift of God to humanity. Emmanuel “God with us”, there is no better gift than the creator of the universe coming to earth and exalting what it means to be fully human. Celebrate the beauty of all the feasts during the Christmas Season: St. Stephen 12/26, the first Christian martyr; the Solemnity of the Holy Mother of God 1/1, when we celebrate the gift of perfect love Mary gives us as the mother of God and our mother too; Epipha-ny 1/7, the coming of the wise men to worship the Christ child; finally the Baptism of the Lord 12/8, Jesus gives us an example of humility and reverence in going to John the Bap-tist to be baptized. Read these Bible stories to the children on the days we celebrate these events. Continue celebrating Christmas for the whole season.
ave you felt a tugging on your heart? Are you looking for a way to share your love of the Catholic faith with others? Or maybe you’ve thought about teaching PSR? God calls all of us to be active in our own way. St. Joseph Parish School of Religion is a great place to develop your talents. We are not necessarily looking for professional teachers to be catechists. We need people with a love of God and His Church, who are will-ing to devote some time to pass the faith on to the next generation. If you have ever thought about helping teach catechism classes please consider coming to the Catechist Informational Night on Monday January 8th at from 7:00 to 8:00 pm. The meeting will take place in the school for one hour. Get your questions an-swered, find out about Catechist formation, meet the Coordinator for Religious Education, and see if God is calling you to be a catechist at St. Joseph.
PSR Breaks
PSR Christmas Break continues through January 1. Classes resume January 7th & 8th. Special Family Activity Days held on January 14 & 15. Regular classes resume January 21st and 22nd.
THANK YOU FROM THE ST. VINCENT DEPAUL SOCIETY
"Come to me all you grown weary and burdened, and I will refresh you" The Gospel of St. Matthew
On behalf of the people aided by this year's Giving Tree Campaign, the members of the St. Vincent DePaul Society offer heartfelt thanks for your extraordinary generosity. All 127 Ornaments representing individual gifts, as well as baskets for entire families, were taken and requested items returned promptly. This allowed for distribution on December 16th.
Because of you help was extended not only to those approaching St. Joseph's directly, but also to those seeking assistance in several other parishes where resources are overwhelmed by need. And, you supported one of the most respected children's homes in the St. Louis area.
Each year Giving Tree commitments are increased because you rise to the occasion. This year was certainly no exception! It is an honor for St. Vincent members to represent you to those served.
