SAINT JOSEPH WELCOMES A SEMINARIAN We are delighted to announce the arrival of seminarian Carlo Santa Teresa to Saint Joseph Parish. Carlo will be shadowing our priests, learning about parish administration, sitting in on committee meetings, participating in liturgical life and getting to know the people of Saint Joseph Parish. Carlo is a Third Year Theology student at the College
Seminary of the Immaculate Conception at St. Andrew’s Hall at Seton Hall University. He will be ordained a Transitional Deacon in May of 2020. He anticipates ordination to the priesthood in June of 2021. We are very happy to join Carlo on his journey to the priesthood. Born in Voorhees, NJ and raised in Cherry Hill, Carlo, an only child, attended Camden Catholic High School and Camden County College where he majored first in political sciene and then in English. Before he entered the seminary, he worked for a time in Trenton speaking to legislators on behalf of the Knights of Columbus and civil liberties. Carlo’s childhood pastor, Monsignor Jim Tracy of the Camden Diocese, left a very strong impression on Carlo, making him want to live his own life “in service to God and the Church to the fullest extent possible.” Please keep Carlo in your prayers and be sure to say hello if you should see him!

THIRTY FIRST SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME ~ NOVEMBER 3, 2019
FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK
NO NOVENA—NOVEMBER 4 Because of the All Souls Memorial Mass, there will be no Miraculous Medal Novena THIS Monday, Nov. 4. It will resume Monday, Nov. 11.
ALL SOULS MASS —NOVEMBER 4
A Mass commemorating the faithful departed will be celebrated at Saint Joseph Church on Monday, November 4 at 7:30 pm. At that Mass, the names of all those who have had funerals at Saint Joseph Church this year will be read. (See page 4 for information about the Knights of Columbus Memorial Mass on Thursday, November 7.)
Elizabeth Lev teaches art history at Duquesne University’s Italian campus. She has also written
outstanding books on paintings by Catholic artists, including How Catholic Art Saved the Faith: The Triumph of Beauty and Truth in Counter-Reformation Art (Sophia Institute Press, 2018). In an article for the current issue of Catholic Digest, she reminds us that
The month of November, when the days grow shorter and darkness encroaches faster, is traditionally the month when the Church remembers the dead and the fleeting nature of our mortal existence.
Besides being the patron of the Universal Church and of workers, St. Joseph is the patron saint for a happy death, a subject many artists have depicted. Francesco Trevisani painted his Death of St. Joseph for Rome’s church of Sant’ Ignazio in 1712 (shown above and on the bulletin cover). I’m sure you can also find the painting using a computer search. Describing it and commenting on it, Elizabeth Lev writes that
… Jesus’ foster father lies on his deathbed while Mary gazes at him devotedly. Jesus stands before him pointing upward authoritatively toward Heaven. Joseph was the first man to know with certainty that he would go to the “house of the Father.” St. Joseph illustrated the most peaceful passing in human history. Jesus, radiant, seems to open the heavens so God the Father can welcome him. Soft light gently caresses his moribund face while hosts of angels pray around him.
Death is the most important inevitability that confronts us. People can react to it in various ways, whether they fear it, or try to ignore it or distract themselves from it, or face it stoically or courageously. But it is part of our life and part of our faith, and so we should be praying about it and preparing for it in a believing way. Above all, we should regard death as the moment of our decisive transition to the eternal realities and, most importantly, as our permanent and wholly fulfilling encounter with God and those who share his life. The late Father Benedict Groeschel, one of the Principal founds of the Francisican Friars of the Renewal, once offered wise counsel about how we
(continued above)
should think about the prospect of death and be at peace with its inescapability. He said that
Many things in life are worse than death. Death can be a very gentle sleep, a sweet passing over to the other side. You close your eyes one last time and you open them in eternity. Why be worried? Why be afraid? Our human instinct is to back away, but our faith should help us face it head-on.
Our parish’s Mass for your family and friends who have died this past year will be
this Monday evening at 7:30. We will read the names of all whose funerals took place here since last All Souls Day and the names you also wish to be included if their funerals took place elsewhere. (If you have names to submit, please call the parish office before 5:00 on Monday. Or let us know in church before the Mass begins.)
