GIVING THOUGHT The magi of old offered their gifts to the newborn king of the Jews. Each Sunday as the collection basket passes before us, we have the opportunity to give a gift to the Lord. Our generosity in the collection should be motivated not so much by the needs of the parish but rather by our need and desire to show our love and reverence for Christ the Lord, the King of all creation!
JOIN US FOR “AN AFTERNOON
OF CHRISTMAS JOY” TODAY
SUNDAY, JANUARY 8, 3 PM
This afternoon Sunday, January 8, at 3 pm, those involved in the music ministry of our parish and school will present a musical program featuring a variety of styles of Christmas music — traditional, contemporary, religious, and popular. Plan to join us for some Christmas joy today, the Feast of the Epiphany, at 3 pm in the upper church. Be sure to bring your relatives, friends, and neighbors. They will have an enjoyable time!
A NOTE OF APPRECIATION Father Tom recently received the following note of thanks from Father Peter Wehrle of Our Lady of Fatima Parish in North Bergen. He would like to share it with you since it is about the generosity of our parish.
Dear Father Tom,
Merry Christmas! Fortunately, the weather was wonderful the evening of December 18th and our Operation Santa went on as scheduled. I want to take this opportunity to thank you and the parishioners of St. Joseph Parish for your assistance.
For the past five years, parishioners of Our Lady of Fatima have volunteered to bring the Spirit of Christmas to needy families. This year, various organizations, including Saint Joseph Parish, donated gifts, and we, as a community, were able to assist 73 families. It is comforting to know that I can count on you, your staff and the parishioners of St. Joseph Parish to be there to help the people of the parish at Our Lady of Fatima.
On behalf of the entire congregation of Our Lady of Fatima, I thank you for your time and consideration. Be assured of our prayers during this Christmas season.
Sincerely in Christ,
Rev. Peter G. Wehrle, Pastor, Our Lady of Fatima Parish

JANUARY 8, 2012 THE FEAST OF THE EPIPHANY OF THE LORD
Love, Father Tom Iwanowski
THE PASTOR’S COLUMN
THREE GIFTS FOR THE LORD,
TWO GIFTS FOR US In today's Gospel, we read how magi from
the east searched out the newborn king of the Jews and presented him with wondrous gifts. In recognition of that event, in many cultures, the Feast of Epiphany is a day for giving gifts. As the magi gave gifts to the child Jesus, people give gifts to people who have a special place in their life.
Today, Epiphany Sunday, January 8, and tomorrow, Monday, January 9, the final day of the Christmas Season, are days when we as a parish family will be presented with two special gifts.
GIFT ONE A MUSICAL GIFT
Today, Sunday, January 8, at 3 pm in the upper church, our music ministry will present us with the gift of a Christmas Concert, entitled, "An Afternoon of Christmas Joy." Our adult choir, school choir, cantors, leaders of song, instrumentalists, and others will share with us the gift of their time and musical talent.
These music ministers, under the direction of Monroe Quinn, our Director of Music, will give us the gift of song. They will present Christmas music in a variety of styles, including traditional, contemporary, religious, and popular.
The media usually puts away Christmas music right after December 25. However, in church we begin singing Christmas music with the first Mass of Christmas Eve and we continue singing such music until the Christmas season ends with the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, which this year falls on January 9.
So I encourage you to come this afternoon with your family, friends, and neighbors to listen to the gift that our music ministers want to give us for Christmas. Also, since by now the hectic pace of the season has lessened, this is a perfect way to spend an enjoyable afternoon reflecting on Christmas and truly listening to the words of the Christmas music that often just becomes background noise as we rush from one thing to another during the holiday season.
GIFT TWO A HOPE-FILLED GIFT
Tomorrow evening, Monday, January 9, our parish fam-ily will receive another gift. At 7:30 pm in the gym of our lower school on Elm Street, we will receive the gift of a strategic plan. Entitled, Forward in Faith 2016, this plan maps out the direction that our parish, including our school, will take in the next four to five years.
This plan was developed by dedicated parish members working with Tom Heding and Sister Mary Anne Heenan from MEITER CONSULTANTS of Hales Corners, Wiscon-sin. The plan incorporates input that the consultants and the members of our parish Steering Committee received from all of you through the in-pew survey taken early last year, focus groups, interviews, meetings with vari-ous committees, and also parish wide consultations.
Forward in Faith 2016 is a gift because it is statement of our hope in the future! If we were not hopeful and optimistic and certain that God would be with us, we would not be planning for the future.
I encourage all of you come to this parish wide meeting. As we said in previous bulletins, "You spoke. We listened. We're mov-
ing Forward in Faith!" Come tomorrow, listen to what you said and what we heard, and learn the directions your input and the guidance of the Holy Spirit has set for our parish.
WORDS OF THANKS Before closing, I want to thank all of you for celebrating this Christmas Season with faith, love, and joy. I think our Masses were powerful celebrations of God's con-tinuing presence in our lives and in our world. The priests, readers, ministers of Holy Communion, greet-ers/ushers and Mass servers all did a wonderful job in leading us in prayer. I would especially like to thank all our ministers of music for helping us to praise God in song.
And certainly, I want to thank Father Raul and all those who worked with him to clean and decorate our church for the Christmas Season. Their efforts truly enhanced the beauty of our church.
Anyone who was with us for Christmas Mass certainly experienced that Christ the Lord was born among us once more. You could feel his spirit and presence in the celebration of our Christmas Masses.
I hope to you see you later today and tomorrow! Don't miss receiving the gifts that have been prepared for you!

A DAY OF RECOLLECTION JUST FOR WOMEN
SATURDAY, JANUARY 21, 2012 Join us for a day of prayer and reflection at the start of this New Year. We will spend time looking at the year past—its struggles and gifts. We will be quiet enough to be aware of ourselves in the present moment. We will pray for the grace to be open to the new life God wants to give us in 2012! There will be time for quiet reflection and solitude. And, we will do what we do best as women —share. Share our experience and support one another.

A NOTE FROM YOUR PASTORAL COUNCIL St. Joseph Parish Pastoral Council held its monthly meeting Monday, December 26, 2011. Major topics addressed at the meeting included:
The selection of new Pastoral Council members for a three term effective January 2012. Gerry Murray and Tracy Schoenberg have accepted the Council's invitation to serve as new members of the Council. Please wish them well in their new role.
Planning for a five week Lenten Faith Sharing Small Group Program. The Pastoral Council will introduce this program the weekend of February 11 & 12. The book Open our Hearts will be used to guide the meetings. The book invites participants to deepen their faith and service by linking reflections on scriptures to their lives as individuals, family members, and parishioners.
The formation of a committee to review our current Sunday Mass schedule. The objective is to look for ways to allow for more time between Masses and lessen traffic congestion and parking problems and also open the possibility for gatherings after Mass. This committee will also look into the feasibility of scheduling a Sunday evening Mass. The consideration of a change in our Mass schedule originated with the In-Pew Survey conducted last March. Look for more information in future bulletins.

The Gospel is the Good News about Jesus. The Gospel Reading for today is from St. Matthew
Chapter 2 verses 1-12.
In today’s Gospel we are told about the three wise men who wanted to find the child Jesus. They were told to follow a special star and they would find the little boy they were seeking. When they found him, they were excited and they presented him with three special gifts, gifts of gold, incense, and an expensive perfume called myrrh. They gave him these gifts because he was the newborn king of the Jewish people.
God wants certain gifts from all of us. God does not want expensive things, instead God wants us to love him and love others. God wants us to be forgiving and kind. God wants us to be good people.
Our greatest gift to God is simply to live as one of his children just as Jesus showed us.
NOTE TO KIDS
Welcome Back!
As we start the New Year, be sure to use your special
envelopes in the Sunday collection. You can extra
envelopes during the Liturgy of the Word With Children.
Just ask Fr. Tom.
NOTE TO PARENTS
The Liturgy of the Word with Children takes place at our 9am Sunday Mass. During that Mass the younger children are sent forth just before the First Reading and go to the lower church for their own celebration of God's Word. The readings, homily, songs and prayers are geared to their understanding. The children return before the presentation of the gifts to continue the cele-bration of the Liturgy with their families. We want God's Good News to be exciting for the younger mem-bers of our parish family. You can contact us at ([email protected]).
MISSION OF THE WEEK Show your mother and father that you love them by helping them around the house doing chores. In that way you will give a gift to them and a gift to God!
Compiled by the Liturgy of the Word With Children Committee.
Sometimes giving someone even a little gift that shows our love and care
can make a person very excited and happy!
