Celebrating 165 years of Pastoral Service to the Catholic Community of Berea

Mission Statement

St. Mary is a faith community which worships together, follows the teachings of Jesus Christ in our everyday lives,

evangelizes others by our lives and actions, gives generously of our time and resources in service to others, shows

compassion and love towards one another, provides religious education and works for social justice for all.

Thirtieth Sunday in Ordinary Time

October 29, 2017

The series of controversies between Jesus and the religious leaders comes to a

head in today’s Gospel. “When the Pharisees heard that Jesus had silenced the

Sadducees, they gathered together.” The disparate groups against Jesus have

now joined forces.

Way back in chapter 5 of Matthew’s Gospel, Jesus offered a new interpreta-

tion of the Law and told his followers that their righteousness should exceed

that of the scribes and Pharisees. Now, his opponents question him about the

Law. As Jesus answered the scholar of the Law, he likewise answers the leader-

ship. LOVE God. LOVE your neighbor!

Reflecting on the Gospel from Celebrating Sunday for Catholic Families, “There are no laws, rules, tal-

ents and merits that can surpass love. Love for God, others, and self should

be all-consuming. It should pervade our hearts, minds and spirits so much so

that there is no space for anything else. The way Jesus spoke of the com-

mandments gives us a clue as to how to live them. Instead of giving a list of

what not to do, he tells us to focus on what and who we should be. When

this becomes our focus, there is no room for anything else.”

Today is about understanding that God has loved us first and we

must return that love in kind again and again. We can’t demand it, obligate it, restrict it or oblige it. It must

come from within.

That’s the lesson Jesus teaches. Look within, be attentive to what God has given and respond to that

with one another.

My personal THANKS to all of YOU for taking the time to respond prayerfully and enthusiastically to

the Grateful Giving Program commitment with your Intention Card. I know these kinds of requests are both

difficult to ask as well as difficult to receive, but I THANK YOU for your

prayerful response in HOW to financially support and sustain our parish

mission. 165 years and counting!

As I said last week our discipleship is what is important in our lives

and our decision to follow Christ and live our lives accordingly is the great-

est decision we can make as His disciples!

If you have NOT YET turned in your Intention Card, they are in

every pew and you can take the time to prayerfully fill in the Card and

drop it in the collection basket. Remember, IF you are interested in Elec-

tronic Giving, check that box on the card and we will keep you informed of

our next steps. Again, THANK YOU to all who have generously responded with their Intention Card and may I

ask that you please continue to pray for the widest possible participation in our Grateful Giving.

Please join in giving to the Lord a portion of all that we have received. May God bless you and stir up

in all of us the gifts of the Holy Spirit received in Baptism and sealed in Confirmation.

Many THANKS for your financial commitment to the Parish this past weekend. Blessings and peace to

all.

Fr. John

Family Perspective

Today Jesus tells us love of God and neighbor are two parts

of the greatest commandment. Loving families do both.

They express their love of God as a family knowing this will

help them love each other. What energizes their love? Lov-

ing God through loving people.

“Love as normal as living and breathing”

“Love one another, even as I have loved

you.” These words should be not only a

light to us, but also a flame consuming the

selfishness which prevents the growth of

holiness. Jesus loved us to the end, to the very limit of love,

the Cross. Love must come from within—from our union

with Christ—an outpouring of our love for God. Loving

should be as normal to us as living and breathing, day after

day until our death.

Catholics across the country will be celebrating Priesthood

Sunday on October 29, 2017. It is a day set aside to celebrate

the importance of the gift of priesthood in the life of the

Church. It is a time for us to reflect on the ministry that our

priests share with us when we gather at the Table of the Lord -

when we call in our times of need. Consider sharing a per-

sonal note or card of thanks to Fr. John and Fr. Max.

Together we pray that many of our young people will be in-

spired by the ministry and witness of our priests. May their

hearts be open to hearing and responding to God’s call in their

lives.

Bible Study & Faith Sharing

With the death of Solomon the kingdom begins to fall

apart. The people begin to stray from God’s rule. We

will meet Tuesday from 11:00am—12:00noon in the

chapel. Even those who have intimate relationships with

God can be tempted to serious sin. Come and see if your

story can connect to the scriptures. Bring your Bible and

join us to see if the Lord might have a message for you.

Quiet Prayer

Quiet prayer will meet on Tuesday at 12:30pm in the

chapel. Quiet prayer will be followed by the second half

of the Keating CD “Contemplation as Method.” We will

close about 1:15 pm. As we move into the autumn season

and before the rush of the holidays, why not give yourself

the opportunity to try this method of prayer.

12 Step Spirituality

12 step will meet Thursday afternoon from 2:30pm -

4:00 pm as we continue our reflection on the principles of

the program. Come and join us and share your experi-

ence, strength and hope of living a 12 step based life.

Music Ministry and Liturgy Notes

By Angela Kovacs Director of Music and Liturgy

LIFE HAS CHANGED, NOT ENDED

This week is chock full of happy days in which we can celebrate the fall season. Of course, the children will be enjoying Halloween on Tuesday

(or on Sunday, if you are participating in the Church’s indoor event at the Father Garrity Center!) On the more liturgical side, Wednesday is All

Souls Day, the time in which we take special reflection of all of those faithful men and women of whom the Catholic Church has confirmed to

have found their way into the kingdom of heaven. This solemn feast is one of six holy days of obligation observed in our church, not including

every Sunday!

On Thursday, we celebrate All Souls Day, which gives reflection to our loved ones who have passed from this earth. Unlike All Saints Day, All

Souls Day is not a holy day of obligation. However, every year, St. Mary’s church holds a special Memorial Mass to celebrate the lives of all

those that we have buried from the church in the past year. There will be a candle set out for each of our beloved friends and family who have

passed, and relatives of those are welcome to take the candle at the end of the Mass. Even though these people may not be here on earth, their

spirit still live on in our hearts. May they rest in peace in eternal paradise with our Lord in heaven.

Choir Rehearsal Schedules: Traditional Choir meets to rehearse on Tuesday evenings at 7.30pm. Youth Choir also rehearses on Tuesdays at

5.30pm. If you are interested in participating in any of these choirs, cantoring, or playing an instrument during mass, please call or see Ms. Angela

Kovacs after mass up in the loft. The Music Ministry office number is 440.243.3877 ext 27.

Join us after each Mass on Sunday, November 12th to enjoy

men and women follow when they discern religious and lay

vocations. Did you know there are seven (yes, seven!) semi-

narians currently studying for the priesthood from our two

parishes of St. Mary in Berea and at St. Mary of the Falls?

The Knights of Columbus joyously provides tuition support

to those seminarians and the funds we raise help make that

happen.

The Vocations Information Fair will take place right along-

side our Pancake Breakfast. It will feature representatives

who will share insights on how to make sense of the various

calls we all receive as Catholics — not just to ordinations

and religious life, but also to family formation and the fully

engaged laity. God’s plan is a good plan — each of us has a

role.

Please participate in the prayer Novena that starts Satur-
