For reasons of prestige he was named imperial chaplain. Then during a thunderstorm in 1115, he only narrowly escaped death by lightning: the event changed his life. He took vows and conducted an upright and righteous life. Pope Gelasius authorized him and several companions to found a religious community at Premontre, France, which developed into the order of the Premonstratensian Canons, approved in 1126. That same year Norbert was chosen archbishop of Magdeburg, Germany. He died there in 1134 and was canonized in 1582 by Pope Gregory XIII. He is depicted with the white robe of the Premonstratensians, usually holding a monstrance. He is the protector of women in childbirth. Jesus told his disciples that he must leave them so that he might send them the Advocate, the Consoler, the Holy Spirit, to guide them in the way of truth and to understand all that Jesus had taught them. On this happy feast of Pentecost we know that we need a guide to keep us rooted in Jesus. We need a consoler because following the Gospel in this world is difficult. And we need the strength that the Holy Spirit gives because our own strength is so limited. So said blessed Cardinal John Henry Newman, a man whose knowledge and holiness were a great inspiration to me during my seminary days. He was an Anglican priest until he converted to Catholicism at age 44 in 1845, a conversion that took a lot of courage in 19th century Anglican England. He was beatified by Pope Benedict XVI in 2010, and it would be a beautiful thing if he were officially canonized. On this feast of Pentecost I offer you a beautiful prayer that Cardinal Newman composed. Mother Teresa prayed this prayer every day after Communion, which inspired me to begin the same habit a long time ago. You might clip this from the bulletin and add it to your prayer book or place it in your Bible. God bless all of you in the Holy Spirit today and always!

Sacraments Baptism - Parents requesting to have a child baptized are invited to call Father Berns directly at 715-384-9414. He will assist with any baptism preparation and scheduling a date.
Reconciliation - Celebrated on Saturdays from 4:45-5:15 pm and upon request. Communal Penance Services are held during Advent and Lent.
First Eucharist and Confirmation - Ongoing catechesis is essential in the faith formation of the youth of Our Lady Peace Parish (OLP). Therefore, any child must be enrolled continually from the First Grade, in either Columbus Catholic Schools or OLP’s Religious Education Programs, to receive either the Sacraments of First Eucharist or Confirmation.
RCIA Christian Initiation of Adults - Anyone interested in joining the Catholic Church should contact Sister Virdean Meyer at 715-384-3044. Classes begin each Fall.
Marriage - Knowing how important it is to marry in the Church, we are happy to see weddings take place in our parish. Father Berns looks forward to meeting with engaged couples to assist them in marriage preparation. As this preparation takes time, couples are asked to contact Fr. Berns 8-12 months before the wedding.
Anointing of the Sick - If any parishioner is ill at home or going into the hospital and would like to receive the Anointing of the Sick, please contact Father Berns at 715-384-9414. A Mass of Healing with anointing is celebrated during the year.

Gift Presentation: Would you consider carrying up the offertory gifts at Mass with your family, your spouse, or even by yourself? All you need to do is let the ushers know before Mass that you are willing to do it. It would be wonderful to see new faces presenting, to the Lord, our earthly gifts that become the Eucharist.

Come and venerate the official relics of Saint Padre Pio of Pietrelcina, in this first U.S. tour to celebrate the 130th anniversary of Saint Padre Pio's birth, and the 15th anniversary of his canonization.
Veneration of the relics will be offered from 9:00am – 11:45am and 1:15pm – 6:30pm. Mass will be offered at 12:10 and at 7:00pm. The 7:00pm Mass will be a Mass in honor of Saint Padre Pio celebrated by the Most Reverend William Patrick Callahan.

Our fear of boredom is in fact most perilous to fruitful participation in the Mass. It often seems that what we desire most in the celebration of the Mass is an occasion to be entertained. We want a homilist who can make jokes and tell engaging stories about his life. We want music that is upbeat, a liturgical equivalent to what we listen to while working out at the gym. We want liturgies that are short so that we can resume our busy schedules. Yet in this desire for entertainment we distract ourselves from the contemplative encounter that each celebration of the Mass offers. Boredom at Mass is not something that should be eliminated. The moment in which we find ourselves bored while listening to the readings and the homily, bored while hearing the same Eucharistic Prayer offered once again, and bored while singing this same hymn we chant every Advent, is also the moment in which we are invited to participate more fully in the love of God poured out in Christ. To let our minds be distracted by the way that incense fractures the colored light, revealing the beauty of a beautiful God, or to let our imaginations wander during the homily, may be less a matter of frittering away the time and more often a moment in which God's voice speaks in the stillness of our hearts.
