Page 2 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time Dear Friends,

In February, St. Patrick’s Church starts a Bible study on Monday nights called “First Corinthians.” For 7 weeks in a row, our 2nd readings for Sunday mass will come from St. Paul’s 1st letter to the Church in Corinth. The Corinthian Church was out of control! There was sexual immorality problems. Members were taking each other to court. Some were receiving the Eucharist unworthily. Others did not believe in the resurrection. No matter where you looked there were signs of division and discord.

Are there divisions in your home? If so, take heart because Jesus wants to help you resolve them. Paul’s words to the Corinthian Church can help us today. Before Paul gave his advice, he thanked God for all the bless-ings they received. Then he addressed their challenges one by one. Paul knew the Corinthian’s were in God’s hands. God is always pouring His blessings on us and offering grace for healing and reconciliation.

Part of healing and reconciliation is forgiveness. Set the tone for your family and friends. Try to practice forgiveness at every chance you get. Let us ask Jesus to heal our division and discord and to send us His Holy Spirit to teach us how to forgive and love each other more.

Look for details on page 10 of this weekend’s bulletin for info on Monday nights Bible Study. If you do not have time on Monday’s, try to read 1 Corinthians at home. Peace in Christ Deacon Dennis

DAY OF PRAYER FOR THE LEGAL PROTECTION OF UNBORN CHILDREN WILL BE OBSERVED THIS MONDAY, JANUARY 23, 2017

The over 56 million abortions since the 1973 decisions of Roe v. Wade and Doe v. Bolton reflect with heartbreaking magnitude what Pope Francis means by a “throwaway culture.” However, we have great trust in God’s providence. We are reminded time and again in Scripture to seek the Lord’s help, and as people of faith, we believe that our prayers are heard. The General Instruction of the Roman Missal (GIRM), no. 373, designates January 22 as a particular day of prayer and penance, called the "Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of Unborn Children”: “In all the Dioceses of the United States of America, January 22 (or January 23, when January 22 falls on a Sunday) shall be observed as a particular day of prayer for the full restoration of the legal guarantee of the right to life and of penance for violations to the dignity of the human person committed through acts of abortion.” As individuals, we are called to observe this day through the penitential practices of prayer, fasting and/or giving alms.

St. Patrick’s Church Bells will toll for 56 minutes beginning at Noon on Monday, January 23rd - 1 minute for each of the mil-lions of abortions since 1973.

A great prayer for life is urgently needed, a prayer which will rise up throughout the world. Through special initi-atives and in daily prayer, may an impassioned plea rise to God, the Creator and lover of life, from every Chris-tian community, from every group and association, from every family and from the heart of every believer. Pope Saint John Paul II, Evangelium Vitae, no. 100

9 Days for Life 2017 Saturday, January 21 - Sunday, January 29

9Days for Life is the U.S. bishops’ annual period of prayer and action focused on cherishing the gift of every person’s life.

While the overarching intention of the centerpiece novena is the end to abortion, each day focuses on a different aspect of respecting each other’s God-given dignity.

Download or sign up to receive the novena any of four ways: free mobile app, test message, email or social me-dia. For more information see: www.9daysforlife.com.

2017 Catholic Schools Week January 29th - February 4th

The theme for the 2017 National Catho-lic Schools week is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge

and Service.” The theme encompasses several con-cepts that are at the heart of a Catholic education. First, schools are communities - small families in their own right, but also members of the larger community of home, church, city and nation. Faith, knowledge and service are three measures by which any Catholic school can and should be judged.

The logo features a swirl of colors around a cross, which is at the center of all Catholic education. The vibrancy of the colors and the movement and shadows in the logo portray the inner-connectivity and community life that are in our Catholic Schools.

2016 Tax Statements

Like last year, the parish office will automatically gener-ate Tax Statements for all parishioners who contribut-ed $250 or more during 2016. We will either mail or email tax statements as soon as they are ready (you don’t need to call the parish office to request yours). Please contact Kenne Ludwig (Ext x204) in the office if you have any questions.

Important Note – This year, our parish statements won’t include any Diocesan Appeal donations. Donors will re-ceive a separate statement from The Diocese of Rockford. The Diocese will generate tax statements for all parishion-ers who sent contributions to DSA, National, International and Mission Appeals in 2016. They are to be mailed by January 31, 2017. Your donations to the Diocese and to St. Patrick Church are greatly appreciated. If you need to follow up with the Diocese about your tax statement after the first week of February, the phone number is (815) 399-4300.

If you contributed less than $250 in 2016 and would like a Tax Statement: Please call us or e-mail us at [email protected] / (815) 385-0025 and we will mail (or e-mail) one to you. We appreciate everybody’s generosity and commitment to St. Patrick Church. Thank you.

The Offering Report from this past weekend, January 15, will be printed in next weekend’s bulletin. The report has been delayed as our bookkeeper is out of the office on vacation. Thank you for your understanding.

In mid-December, a local woman made an emergency trip to Florida to pickup her young niece and nephew. These children are now in a safe environment, but these new members of the family resulted in un-expected expenses and additional needs

just before Christmas. A call to St. Vincent de Paul result-ed in this family receiving the assistance it needed to pro-vide winter clothing and blankets for the children as well as several bags of food to help feed the family through the holidays. Vincentians prayed with the family for continued strength and peace.

Proverbs 31:20 “She opens her arms to the poor and extends her hands to the needy.”

2017 Week of Prayer for Christian Unity

January 18-25, 2017

God of all, we pray as one, that we may be one, just as the Lord Jesus prayed we may be one in Him. Your son Jesus compels us to be reconciled to one an-other. May our spirits be joined to your Holy Spirit, that we may witness to the visible unity of your Church. May we all recog-nize that we are truly one with you, Father, Son and Holy Spirit

and grow together in peace. We ask this in the name of Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Vocation Corner: 2 Minutes!

This past weekend I was helping with a high school retreat for the Youth Group at my parish. At one point our youth minister came up to me and said that in just a bit we'd be having a session in which each of the leaders would be getting up and giving 2 minute talks on various topics. We kept it to 2 minutes (and even had a timer up on a big screen!) because this meant that the teens would get the info in bite sized nuggets – but at the same time it meant that we had to distill our wisdom and make sure to make the words count! I was asked to speak on discernment. I thought about all of the things that I could say in regards to "How to Discern" but right before I got up for my chance to speak I quickly tossed all of the tools and tips on how to discern aside because it hit me what I had to say if I only had time to say one thing!

I got up and I simply explained that if we really want to discern God's will and to figure out what it is, that the very first step, the foundation of everything, is being open to every possibility that God may be calling us to. THE KEY IS OPENNESS! I say this because I can have all of the wisdom and the tools in place to be able to discern if a certain thing is what God is calling me to or not, but if I'm not open to the one thing that God calls me to then I'll nev-er actually do God's will! So trust in God and be open to whatever He may be calling you to!

If you are new to the area or visiting from another parish, welcome to our faith community! Please visit our website www.stpatrickmchenry.org to find out more about St. Patrick parish. We invite you to become a member of our parish. Sacraments

Baptism of Infants or children under 7 years of age:

You must be a registered parishioner of St. Patrick prior to scheduling a Baptism. To schedule a Baptism, please begin by calling the parish office. Baptism is celebrated on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month immediately after the 11AM Mass. Please consider scheduling your child’s Baptism be-fore your child is born to ensure an opening in the month of your choice. In addition, a Baptismal preparation class is re-quired for the parents. This class is offered on the 1st Sunday of each month after the 9AM Mass. Sign-up is required and you may take the class before your child is born.

Sacrament of Marriage: At St. Patrick, couples planning to marry need to meet with the Pastor before a wedding date can be set. Please contact the parish office to setup an initial meeting at least 6 months prior to any requested marriage date. This initial meeting will give you an overview of the requirements for marriage and the preparation required. At least one of the couple, or their parents, must be registered parishioners for at least 6 months and be active participating members of St. Pat-rick Church in order to be married at the church. Both individuals must be at least 19 years of age.

St. Patrick Catholic Church Parish Registration - Do You Need to Register?

ARE YOU: (1) New to the parish; (2) Moving back; (3) Just Married; (4) Attending mass but never officially registered? (4) Even if you grew up in St. Patrick, you (as an adult) need to register independent from your parents.

Please do not take your church registration for granted. Attending Mass is not enough; there must be an official rec-ord of your membership in the Parish. Parish registration is essential for many reasons. It becomes important when you or your family members are receiving the Sacraments - First Communion, Baptism, Confirmation and Marriage. Registration is also required for those wishing to become a Baptism or Confirmation sponsor. In addition, becoming a member of a parish gives one the identity of belonging to a family—the parish family of St. Patrick Catholic Church.

If you are not officially registered with the parish, please do so as soon as possible. All you have to do is contact the par-ish office at 815-385-0025 or stop in during office hours and request a registration packet. Registration packets are also available on the parish website at www.stpatrickmchenry.org—just click on Registration/Moving at the top of the screen.

St. Patrick Music Ministry

Did you know that our St. Patrick Music Ministry Team is mostly made

up of people just like you who may not be musically trained but who simply just love to sing? We are in need of parishioners like you who have a heart for singing our Lord’s praises.

REHEARSALS Adults: Tuesday evenings at 7pm.

Children: Thursday evenings at 6pm. Place: Music Room - lower level of parish center

Beginning in February, we will have “Open-Choir Hour” where you can come join us upstairs in the choir loft when you attend one of the Masses at which the choir is singing (usually the 4pm or the 9am Masses). We will have extra music books available for you, so just walk up to the choir loft when you enter church.

If you play piano or another instrument, consider learning/rehearsing one or two songs to join in along with the choirs. We can provide the music and instruction.

St. Patrick Church Music Ministers make a joyful noise unto the Lord, enhancing our liturgical services. We are, however, in need of new members in order to continue!! Come, we have a place saved for you.

Please contact Cecilia Adams, Music Director at [email protected] for more information.
