Page 2 4th Sunday of Advent

Dear Friends in Christ,

The message of Advent leading to Christmas is a simple but a powerful expression of God’s uncon-ditional love for us. It is also an invitation for us to make our world a place of love, peace and joy as we prepare for Christmas next week.

In the past weeks we heard about God’s plan of love for the world, in Jesus, through the prophets particularly John the Baptist. This fourth week of Advent introduces St. Joseph and his role in mak-ing that plan at Christmas a reality. He was a good Jewish man betrothed, that is, engaged to Mary. Before they came together she was found to be pregnant. The law prescribed capital punishment, through stoning, for such an offense. As Joseph plans to break the engagement quietly an Angel told him in a dream to take her home confirming what Mary reported about the expected child. Con-ceived through the power of the Holy Spirit, He would be named Jesus (the Greek form of a Hebrew

name, Jeshua or Jehoshua (Joshua in English), commonly interpreted “Yahweh saves” because He will save His people from sin. This is the central message of Christmas that we sometimes miss: Jesus is a savior from sin. No one can for-give sin but God alone. Hence, Jesus is God with us, the Emmanuel. Predicting His divine origin, “Isaiah, in his day, was speaking of a young woman giving birth and naming her child Immanuel. Matthew delights in the fact that the Greek Bi-ble translates almah (“young woman”) with parthenos (“virgin”), thereby making the words an especially apt description of Jesus’ origin. What is more, the name given to the child in Isaiah 7, Immanuel (“With-us-God”), applies to Jesus in a way neither Isaiah nor Ahaz, his interlocutor, could have guessed.” cf (Dennis Hamm, SJ, 2001 Let the Scriptures Speak, “Joseph’s Dream”, Sunday Website of St. Louis University).

Joseph’s response to the Angel’s request saves Mary from capital punishment, public ridicule and shame. Furthermore, it demonstrates that no earthy man is the father of Mary’s child. God confirmed this to Joseph and us through the Angel in the dream.

Mary’s “yes”, her steadfastness and faith to God in the midst of threats to her life and the obedience of Joseph to the Lord, despite his personal plans, are models for us. Like her, we are called to say YES to God, and like Joseph we make effort to do God’s will. The final week of Advent as a threshold to Christmas invites us to respond to God with love and with generosity to our brothers and sisters in need.

In Christ,

Fr. Godwin

THE O ANTIPHONS

As her final phase of preparation for Christmas, the Church recites or chants the O Antiphons during Vespers of the Liturgy of the Hours. The O Antiphons express the Church’s longing for and ex-pectation of the Messiah, and her startled wonderment at the full-ness of grace which the Christ-Child is about to bestow on the world.

Benedictine monks arranged these antiphons with a definite pur-pose. If one starts with the last title and takes the first letter of each one — Emmanuel, Rex, Oriens, Clavis, Radix, Adonai, Sapientia — the Latin words ero cras are formed, meaning, “Tomorrow, I will come.” In these words, the Lord Jesus, for whose coming we pre-pare in Advent and to whom we address these seven Messianic titles, now speaks to us. The O Antiphons not only bring intensity to our Advent preparations, but they bring our preparations to a joyful conclusion.

Please join me in prayer for the victims of the Reigner’s Church building collapse in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, in Nigeria (my home state). Many had been gathered last week at the church when the iron roof caved in. At least 160 people have died and many more injured. We ask the Lord to rest the souls of those who died and give strength and fortitude to all those who are injured and solace to the families of all those affected.

At the end of December, 14 members of ImaBridge Africa will be traveling to Nigeria for the Annual Mission Trip. Please keep them and all those awaiting their visit in Nigeria in your thoughts and prayers. You will be able to follow the trip on ImaBridge Africa’s webpage (www.imabridge.org) and Facebook Page - ImaBridge Africa.

St. Patrick Music Ministry

Did you know that our St. Patrick Music Ministry Team is mostly

made up of people just like you who may not be musically trained but who simply just love to sing? We are in need of parishioners like you who have a heart for singing our Lord’s praises.

Over these last few weeks of Advent we have “Open-Hymn Hour” where you can come to a rehearsal and sing with us to see if you might be interested in joining.

REHEARSALS Adults: Tuesday evenings at 7pm.

Children: Thursday evenings at 6pm. Place: Music Room - lower level of parish center

Beginning in February, we will have “Open-Choir Hour” where you can come join us upstairs in the choir loft when you attend one of the Masses at which the choir is singing (usually the 4pm or the 9am Masses). We will have extra music books available for you, so just walk up to the choir loft when you enter church.

If you play piano or another instrument, consider learning/rehearsing one or two songs to join in along with the choirs. We can provide the music and instruction.

St. Patrick Church Music Ministers make a joyful noise unto the Lord, enhancing our liturgical services. We are, however, in need of new members in order to continue!! Come, we have a place saved for you.

Please contact Cecilia Adams, Music Director at [email protected] for more information.

able in the parish office at a cost of $5.00 each. They can be purchased during normal office hours.

News and Thank You’ s

Thank you for your continued support of ImaBridge Africa. The cargo container

with all your donations will be arriving in Uyo, Nigeria (it’s final destination) shortly.

Montini Catholic Schools service project for this year is Ima-Bridge Africa: Building a Bridge of Love. So far an amazing $1,491 has been raised for Education & Uniforms. This money has been primarily been raised during Montini’s No-Uniform Days. The children make a donation to ImaBridge, so that they can attend school without their uniform, in order to provide a Nigerian child with an uniform allowing them to at-tend school. Just last week Nigerian children were being meas-ured for school uniforms. Each uniform is hand sewn and there are approximately 116 students who will be receiving uniforms through the Montini students generosity. This will allow them to attend school! The students will continue these fundraising events for the remainder of the school year. THANK YOU!

We’d also like to thank all our parishioners who have re-sponded to our request for reading glasses. Over 400 pairs of glasses have been received and have been packed to travel to Nigeria with the ImaBridge Mission Team. They will be dis-tributed to those in need at the 7 medical screening clinics planned during the trip. THANK YOU!

The Mission Team leaves for Nigeria on December 28th. Please keep them in your prayers. You can check the Ima-Bridge website (www.imabridge.org) and Facebook page for updates, pictures and more information.

Since the fall of our first parents, humanity has been tempted to mistrust the love that God the Father has for us. Scripture scholar Dr. Tim Gray takes us on a journey that addresses the perva-sive misconceptions that God is quick to anger, that the God of the Old and New Testaments are different, and that God doesn’t have a merciful heart for us. You will see that you can trust our heavenly Father, who is truly one with his Son.

Sacraments

Baptism of Infants or children under 7 years of age:

You must be a registered parishioner of St. Patrick prior to scheduling a Baptism. To schedule a Baptism, please begin by calling the parish office. Baptism is celebrated on the 2nd and 4th Sunday of each month immediately after the 11AM Mass. Please consider scheduling your child’s Baptism be-fore your child is born to ensure an opening in the month of your choice. In addition, a Baptismal preparation class is re-quired for the parents. This class is offered on the 1st Sunday of each month after the 9AM Mass. Sign-up is required and you may take the class before your child is born.

Sacrament of Marriage: At St. Patrick, couples planning to marry need to meet with the Pastor before a wedding date can be set. Please contact the parish office to setup an initial meeting at least 6 months prior to any requested marriage date. This initial meeting will give you an overview of the requirements for marriage and the preparation required. At least one of the couple, or their parents, must be registered parishioners for at least 6 months and be active participating members of St. Pat-rick Church in order to be married at the church. Both individuals must be at least 19 years of age.

Vocation Corner: Time Crunch

Believe it or not we’re only one week away from Christ-mas! For many people I think this is the time of year when they feel incredible pressure and maybe even anxiety to get the last presents purchased and wrapped and to get the house cleaned for upcoming Christmas celebrations. The bottom line is that there are expectations placed on us that need to be fulfilled in this final week, this period of crunch time, and so it is easy to create either a mental or even jot down a physical list of things to do. What is hard-er to do than creating that list is to remember to put “PRAY” as the very first thing on the list (and to put it down numerous other times on the list as well so that we don’t cross it off and call the job done!)

This is especially true when it comes to discerning our vocations and the bigger pieces of our lives. Society plac-es expectations on us when we graduate from high school or college, when we get married, and at other big mo-ments in our lives. And if we don’t know exactly what our next move is, yet the time to make a move is coming close, it can be easy to forget about God. The thing is that this is the time when we need Him and His guidance the most. So put communicating with God through prayer at the top of your to-do-list each day and then have confi-dence that everything will work out just fine in the end.

She is an independent middle-aged woman who raised her children on her own after leaving an abusive marriage. Things were going really well until the business where she worked closed and she couldn’t find another job. Losing her townhouse and

moving into a shelter wasn’t easy, but when her finances got even more strained, she reached out to St. Vincent de Paul. Through your financial support, Vincentians were able to help pay liability insurance on her car and provid-ed her with a paid phone card, enabling her to receive calls about and then drive to job interviews. John 15:12 This is my commandment, that you love on another as I have loved you.
