Founded in 2005 by the James Barry Robinson Trust, Saint Patrick Catholic School is an independent Catholic school with an enrollment of approximately 400 students from pre-kindergarten through eighth grade. We are committed to educating the whole child through our distinctive model for educational success that allows us to celebrate the gifts of every child. Enrollment is open to children from all faith traditions, Catholic and non-Catholic alike, and spiritual instruction is designed to help the child as well as the family as they continue along their own faith journey. Saint Patrick Catholic School has defined education as the highly intentional, total formation of youth, and for the past decade we have held ourselves accountable to that vision. We have seen our graduates go on to claim remarkable accomplishments and have no doubt that in the future they will be among the top leaders of this community and beyond.

The educational world is in such a dramatic transition, largely driven by technology and the knowledge explosion. This transition is pleading for an educational system that can keep up with massive amounts of new information as well as guide the application of that knowledge toward morally acceptable outcomes. We know well that the answer to the challenge of education does not lie in the noise and clamor of the next external gadget, test or software program - but in following the whisper found within the souls and minds of children. A whisper that Isaiah recognized as the voice of God.

Over the last decade, we have all learned to recognize God in the whisper of children seeking affirmation and confidence, guidance and responsibility. In children who are finding out who they are, and who they are called to be. We can “see” their whisper in a look, a wince, a tear, a laugh, or in a student lingering at a desk for a moment longer than they might have. We recognize the whisper in subtle ways, imperceptible to most. It is a whisper that calls us, like Isaiah, to come out of our cave and meet God, face-to-face.

We answer that whisper, in a unique way, in a way that no other school in the world answers. It is not a particularly easy way; it is not expedient to our own needs. It is a child-centered way that respects students’ ability to choose and understands that inspiring right-thinking and guided decision-making is foundational to moral development, emotional health, leadership and service. Any school can teach a child how to use a powerful gadget and we, like other good schools, must do that as well. But we are obligated to also teach that its application must be used in respecting the common good. To do less is to fail. And when it comes to children, failure is not an option.

The reality is, it is expensive to nurture this unique program. Through your generosity over the last decade, we have been able to acquire the resources children need for this exceptional instruction. Going forward, there is no doubt we will depend on your generous support again, to continue and improve upon what we have started. Your support strengthens this faith-learning community which first sees each student as a child of God and helps tune our ears to that whisper guiding us in our service of children.

Annual Report of Giving: A Defining Decade 3

The Lacores After being stationed here in 2002, Pat and Nancy Lacore fell in love with the area and are happy to now call Norfolk, Virginia, home. Like more than thirty percent of those at Saint Patrick Catholic School, their family is a military one: both serve in the US Navy.

“I grew up in Albany, Pat grew up in Orlando,” says Nancy, “and Norfolk is exactly in the middle. We were living in San Diego but our family was all on this coast. When we got the opportunity to come back east, we jumped.”

Four of the six Lacore children were born by the time they moved to area, but the family struggled to find a good academic fit. “We tried lots of local schools for our kids, but I kept feeling I had to advocate for my child every day,” says Nancy. “It was exhausting.”

When Saint Patrick began recruiting students at their church, they liked what they heard. “I think what appealed most to us was the idea of zeroing in on what makes your child special,” says Nancy.

Oldest daughters Kasey and Mary Kate became Wolfhounds in 2006. Their four younger siblings soon followed suit.

“I am a 16-year veteran of Catholic schools,” says Nancy. “I like the idea of infusing religion into school and celebrating and praying in the classroom. But this is a different kind of Catholic education.”

“It isn’t one-size-fits-all,” adds Pat. “Each of our kids has a different learning style, but each has had unique opportunities to succeed. I can’t speak highly enough about the faculty; I’m floored by the dedication I see. Our kids feel cared for and loved. From lunch tables to prayer buddies, it’s all like a family.”

Kasey, Mary Kate and Patrick, who graduated last year, have all moved on to the Granby International Baccalaureate Program, where they are excelling. Nancy and Pat cite Saint Patrick with giving their children the confidence to take the next step in their own education.

“Middle school is such an awkward time, so for them to be able to figure out who they are in a safe place is invaluable,” says Nancy.

“I agree,” adds Pat. “Each of our kids walked into a school as big as Granby after being in a place like Saint Patrick for so many years, and they weren’t intimidated at all. They were confident and knew who they were.”

There are other aspects of the Saint Patrick education the Lacores credit for their children’s academic success in high school.

“What I love are the opportunities for public speaking,” says Pat. “I notice that the students coming out of Saint Patrick all seem to be confident speaking to adults. The faculty encourages them to advocate for themselves. I think that combined with things like Legati and presenting in front of chapel and student assemblies leads to kids who are capable of confident conversations with people much older than they are.”

They also reference National History Day, in which seventh and eighth grade students choose a subject based on a yearly theme and then present it, as a strong influence in the lives of their children. The assignment emphasizes research, collaboration and presentation skills.

“History Day was a great lesson,” says Nancy. “Kasey is finishing a two-year senior project and I think the methodical approach she learned at Saint Patrick definitely helped her to prepare.”

As for the three who still walk the Saint Patrick halls, Pat and Nancy are pleased with both the learning and the living that Lucy, currently in seventh grade, Evelyn, in third grade and Lily, in second, experience.

“Lily has fallen head over heels for every teacher she’s had,” says Nancy. “The girls are all totally happy. Saint Patrick is a loving, nurturing environment and they love their big family.”

arlos Betancourt is a picky shopper, especially when it comes to his work pants.

It isn’t the style, the color, or even the price; it’s the knees.

“I probably blow through a pair of pants a month because I’m on the ground playing with the kids in my class so much,” he explains. “I wouldn’t pick stressing about my clothes over bonding with the students, so if there is anything I like to wear, I don’t wear it to work.”

As one third of Saint Patrick Catholic School’s pre-Kindergarten faculty team, Betancourt has been sacrificing slacks for nearly ten years in a career where men are a rarity. According to 2012 labor statistics, ninety-eight percent of pre-K teachers are women.

In all, two out of three pre-K faculty at Saint Patrick share the Betancourt name; his wife, Sarah, teaches in the classroom adjacent to his. The two were dating when his now-wife left Maryland after both had completed their Master’s programs (she also finished post-grad work)to take a position at a new, innovative Catholic school in Norfolk, Virginia. When the principal, Steve Hammond, asked if she knew of other teachers who might be a good fit, she mentioned Betancourt.

“I told him during the interview that I was intending to propose to Sarah. In fact, Steve knew before Sarah that I bought a ring. I wanted him to know that it was a serious relationship and that if I moved down here I wasn’t planning on moving again anytime soon. Thankfully he bit and so did she and I’ve been here ever since.”

It would be easy to peg Betancourt’s blooming relationship as the sole trigger for his move to Saint Patrick, but his connection went much deeper. It represented an opportunity to break free from the regimented public school system he had seen. “There, it was like ‘on day 104 this is what you should be teaching,’ and at Saint Patrick the children could help lead the way in what we learned,” says Betancourt.

In his classroom, pint-sized chairs barely contain his tall, sturdy frame, yet none of his students has seen him sit in anything else. Betancourt is nearly always on eye-level with his students.

Most of his class claims “centers” as the favorite part of their day, a portion of free time when they get to choose areas set up with various toys and activities. Betancourt engages with each child as they play. Today, he is receiving a checkup from 5-year-old Riley, whose miniature white coat barely covers his jeans and Irish t-shirt. It doesn’t matter that he has used his stethoscope on Betancourt’s scalp, Riley still gets a high-five from his teacher after declaring him clear of any monkeys in his ears and administering a Fisher Price shot without pain.

Only two months into the school year, the tenor of the class is remarkably sedate. Each child seems calm and happy, content playing in his or her area of the room. Students know their responsibilities; when one leaves the household center untidy, she is gently redirected by Betancourt to clean up and returns without a fuss to finish the job.

“He’s like birthday cake,” says Juliana when asked about Betancourt. “Because it’s my favorite.”

Hopefully future generations will get to experience his classroom skills, too.

“If I leave this place, it’s to start a new chapter of my life, not to teach anywhere else. This place should be modeled and be accessible to children of all walks of life,” says Betancourt. “By teaching kids from all socio-economic levels we have proven that our method is successful and the experience here should be available to everyone.”

In the meantime, he has found at least one use for the pants he happily surrenders to the job he loves: he hands them down to his nephews. “They love the ‘worn in’ look,” says Betancourt. “So now when I have a pair where the threads are showing, they actually have a use.”

sLife of Mind

• Saint Patrick Catholic School received the National Blue Ribbon Award from the Department of Education for academic excellence.

• As part of the Virginia Star Quality Initiative, Saint Patrick Catholic School’s Pre-Kindergarten program was awarded a five-star rating by the Virginia Early Childhood Foundation. This was the only five-star rating achieved by a faith-based school in Virginia.

• Saint Patrick Catholic School received dual accreditation from the Southern Association of Independent Schools (SAIS).

• Six students were awarded the top three prizes in the Friends of the Norfolk Public Library Book Review Contest.

• Ten middle school students participated in the Ghent Business Association’s annual mask contest and all first through third place award winners were among them.

• The Dance Theatre of Harlem performed for students, thanks to the Virginia Arts Festival and a gift from a generous donor.

• Over sixty students participated in last spring’s production of the “Wizard of Oz.”

• The Saint Patrick strings group won first place at an annual Busch Gardens concert for the second straight year.

Life of ReLationship

• A revision to the Graduate at Graduation process enabled students to reflect on their personal stories and better evaluate their growth in all areas of total formation.

• Twelve alumni returned to serve on a panel for the eighth grade presentations.

• While the Colombian Exchange program with the Rochester School is now in its fourth year, the first group of Saint Patrick students made the journey to Bogotá in the fall of 2013.

• Both parent and student alumni came together for separate opportunities to share high school experiences with eighth grade students and families.

• Once a week Mr. Hammond met with middle school for specific grade-level conversations (Hammond Chats).

• Saint Patrick Catholic School hosted William Glasser Institute’s annual conference for the Southeast Region. Several parents, faculty and staff were certified at the basic, intermediate and advanced levels.

• A record number of alumni attended the annual reunion and barbeque.

the physiCaL Life

• In June of 2014, students participated in the Presidential Physical Fitness testing with 40% of second-eighth graders achieving the Presidential level, and 40% achieving the National level.

• 74% of our school population participated in at least one sport. Among our third-eighth grade students, 92% of children participated.

• Saint Patrick athletes won six Eastern Tidewater Independent School Championships: Seventh and eighth grade volleyball, middle school boys soccer, middle school girls soccer, middle school girls basketball, and seventh grade boys basketball.

• The school soccer fields now have a new scoreboard, thanks to generous sponsors.

• Over fifty students from grades kindergarten-eighth grade participated in cross country.

Life of spiRit

• Father Jim Curran officially became the school’s first chaplain.

• Kindergarteners and first graders were matched with middle school student “prayer buddies” during chapel and Mass to help foster relationships.

• Twelve pastors, from a variety of area churches, were introduced by members of their faith community as part of Christian Unity Day.

• A group of eighth grade students developed and presented a proposal to the Board of Directors for a labyrinth to be built on the grounds of the school.

• A special chapel, featuring the Stations of the Cross, was presented by the eighth grade class.

• The eighth grade class dedicated the Seventh Station of the Cross.

Life of VoCation

• Upon hearing of a family tragedy at the home of a Saint Pius X family, the eighth grade basketball team, under the leadership of one of its players, took action and collected gift cards and donations totaling $1,460 to help the family.

• Over 500 inches of hair have been donated to “Locks of Love” since the initial challenge made by a second grader in 2011.

• Seventh and eighth grade math classes collected over 400 cans of food for the Catholic Worker, then analyzed the size and volume of each can as a math assignment.

• In the fall of 2013, the first annual “Walking with the Wolfhounds” was held to benefit the Norfolk SPCA.

• All Wolfhounds continue to collect canned goods, on a weekly basis, for the Norfolk Catholic Worker and other local charities.

• The eighth grade class hosted the fifth annual Servant Leadership dinner to honor individuals, from five local churches, who give back to their community.

• A third grader initiated a school-wide JOY Fund project to collect money for Joy Children’s Village Orphanage in Kenya. Over $700 was raised.

• For the fourth year in a row, Saint Patrick Catholic School received the River Star Model School designation.

• Over 350 volunteers donated their time and talent to support athletics, Evenings at Saint Patrick, the theater program, and other special events.

• Adult Evenings classes (Evenings at Saint Patrick) raised over $60,000 to support the school’s scholarship fund.

Graduate Class of 2010 We are pleased to report that our third class of Wolfhounds are heading off to college. Of all the graduates, 75% were honors graduates from their respective high school programs.
