St. Vincent de Paul Church Cleveland, Ohio

Dear Parish Families, How’s your Lenten rebuilding, your “Extreme Home Makeover” going so far? Were you able to check the foundation of your life for the cracks that temptation throws our way? Have you spent some time consulting God’s original blueprints, His original plans, to get your construction project heading in the right direction? If not, don’t worry, we’ve still got some weeks left in our Lenten journey, let’s not allow the time to pass us by! This week, we encounter a reality that happens in so many construction projects, changes of plans. We set out with a plan, a course of action, in mind, & something happens that causes us to change those plans. Maybe the materials we needed are no longer in stock, maybe we discover something like a water pipe or some duct work that we didn’t know was there, that causes us to reroute our plans. For one reason or another, we realize that our plans need to be changed & our rebuilding project ends up going in a different direction than we had originally laid out. Samaritans & Jews in the time of Jesus were, to put it lightly, not friends, the Gospel tells us that Jews used nothing in common with Samaritans. There was no love lost between them. So when this Samaritan woman approached the well to get water & saw this Jewish man, Jesus, sitting there, she was probably dreading the encounter, thinking it would be nothing more than a nuisance. But that meeting changed her life, that encounter changed her plans & set her construction project off on a new & very much unexpected course. She found salvation, she found direction, in a place & a person where she never expected to find it. We too can, at times, think that we have figured out where we need to go, where God is calling us, where He’s leading us, but then some unexpected, unplanned, situation or encounter changes our plans. We encounter God’s call in a way we had never expected to. We realize that God is leading us in a way that we had never thought he would. We encounter God’s call through a person we didn’t think we would ever find Him in. So, my brothers & sisters, let’s not be too quick to dismiss any opportu-nity to encounter God, let’s not be too quick to write off any person, any situation, as a way that God might be leading us. The honest reality is that we just never know where, when, how, or through who God is going to reveal His construction plans to us. Have a blessed week! —Fr. John
