Pewed Surveyed 2,252 parents and kids in 2012.....

Only 38% of kids read during their spare time

51% said they enjoyed television over reading.

We live in a world where screens dominate our time

So how might we help new readers & parents fall back in love with reading together?

Page 7: Sara Olson

“Emitt struggles on certain words. It would be great if we could organize the words each day that we need to work on together. “

Sue Voekel & Emitt

Daria has a hard time finishing books. She tends to read books above her level and we have a hard time wanting to interfere in her decisions. I think she would like reading to be more social and with her friends.Victoria Heilwel

“We are a family that reads all the time. However, Zane is very aware of his reading level and just needs that boost of confidence to get excited about the books.”

Anastasia & Zane

What are today’s parents experiencing?

Parents not only struggle to get reading routines organized, but it is hard to know where to start and

how to make it fun.

Inspiration & Form

Playful, fun, and simple. The bookmark should integrate craft and technology. Warm hues mixed with warm materials like wood.

Great Level Match! This book is level with Billy’s

other readings.

Have you ever dreamed of being locked in a department store at night? The endearing story of Corduroy paints a

picture of the adventures that might unfold (for a teddy bear at least) in such a situation.

I took apart several types of cameras, in order to really understand the basic mechanisms inside.

Page 17: Sara Olson

Looking beyond traditional camera mechanisms, I experimented with things like ice cream scoops, game controllers, and calculators. This

was in hopes of pushing the idea of common function.

The SpaceThe story starts here with this empty classroom. Our goal was to help the middle school students to envision a new space for making, creating, and designing.

Page 27: Sara Olson

Trash in the treasureThe Kidmob team was able to save over $3000 in materials cost by using the post-finals trash left at the California College of Arts dumpsters.

Page 28: Sara Olson

A vinyl cutter and Makerbot 3D printer were graciously donated to the classroom. The kids were able to see the endless possibilities that come with exciting tech.

Ideas become reality! The students were encouraged to take their ideas and build them out, helping to bring design vision to life.
