What You Should Know about Mosquitoes & TicksMosquitoes Ticks

• Mosquitoes lay eggs in most any place where water accumulates and remains for a period of time, i.e.: ditches, low areas, bird baths, boats, gutters, tires.

• A brood of mosquitoes emerge every 7-10 days during warm weather

• Mosquitoes found in Northern Illinois can transmit various diseases such as West Nile Virus, La Crosse and St. Louis encephalitis.

• Mosquitoes can travel up to 20 miles from where they are hatched.

• Mosquitoes do not live and breed in tall grasses.

• There are a couple species of ticks found in this area: the Dog Tick and the Deer Tick

• The deer tick is also known as the black-legged tick.• Ticks can transmit various illnesses, most notable in this

area is Lyme disease, though not common.• These arachnids do not fly. They wait on grasses and shrubs

for a host to come by.• Like a mosquito, the tick is looking for a blood meal from

warm-blooded mammals.• The process of sucking blood could take up to several

days to accomplish, at which time the tick drops off the host. Disease transmission occurs after 24-48 hours being embedded on the host.

• Only 2-3% of all persons bitten by a deer tick develop Lyme disease.woodhaven’s protocol on mosquito control:

• Clarke Mosquito Control is contracted each season to conduct larviciding throughout property by means of a helicopter. This occurs 3 times during the season: May, June, and July. The larvicide is applied to sights conducive to egg laying and larvae development. The larvicide prevents the mosquito from hatching into the biting adult. The application is effective for approximately 30 days.

• The Association conducts ground spraying through the season as needed to control adult mosquitoes throughout property. All roads and cul-de-sacs are travelled each time the machine is taken out. These sprays are generally conducted on Thursday evenings, weather permitting.

• The ground spray kills the adult mosquito and helps to reduce the population for a brief period of 3-4 days. Frequent spraying is harmful to beneficial insect species hence the reason for spraying only as needed. Sprays are conducted in the evening when the mosquito is most active and susceptible to the spray.

• Qualified staff members manually treat smaller areas of standing water that are holding mosquito larvae when they come across them.

Your responsibility:

• Look for standing water on your property and empty if possible.

• Treat any standing water with products specific for this, found at garden centers and hardware stores. Remember to follow the label.

• Most importantly, use personal insect repellants containing DEET while outside.

removing embedded ticks:

• Remove carefully with fine tweezers.• Grab as close to skin as possible, using a magnifying glass if

available.• Do Not: squeeze tick body, apply Vaseline, use burnt match,

or clean with alcohol while tick is attached.• Tick can be tested for the Lyme bacteria, so save in a

container.

Lyme Disease:

• The key is early detection, diagnosis, and medical attention. If you have found a tick embedded in you or someone else, keep an eye out for signs and symptoms.Symptoms• Bull’s-eye patterned rash in area where bitten• flu-like symptoms early on, i.e.: fatigue, chills, fever, headache, and joints ache

avoiding tick bites:

• Apply insect repellants containing DEET to clothing and exposed skin.

• Wear long sleeved shirt and pants when walking in the woods and fields. One can even tuck pants into socks.

• It is important to check yourself, children, and pets for ticks after spending time in areas where ticks are found.
