Bunnings BBQ- Sunday 2nd September 9am- 4pm Volunteers required. If you can assist for an hour out of your day please speak to Mr. Clarke. Thank you. PYP PRIMARY YEARS PROGRAMME EXHIBITION The Primary Years Programme (PYP) exhibition is a requirement of all authorized PYP schools. It represents a significant event in the life of a PYP student, making sense of the essential elements, skills, knowledge, attitudes, concepts and action of the PYP and sharing them with the whole school community. The exhibition provides the culminating experience of the student’s engagement with the Primary Years Programme (PYP) and provides a forum for demonstrating the attributes of the Learner Profile to our community. The staging of the exhibition is the culmination of this extended collaborative investigation and the students enjoy the experience of sharing their learning with both their parents and the wider school community. The transdisciplinary theme being explored this year will be- How we express ourselves An inquiry into the ways in which we discover and express ideas, feelings, nature, culture, beliefs and values; the ways in which we reflect on, extend and enjoy our creativity; our appreciation of the aesthetic. The Grade 5/6 Exhibition will take place on Thursday 18th October. The IB Learner Profile A major focus for the grade 5/6 students at the beginning of the exhibition is spending some time on what it means to be an internationally minded person. The aim of the IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognise their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world. The learner profile is central to the PYP definition of what it means to be internationally minded, and it directs schools to focus on the learning. The profile of an internationally minded person is a set of ideals that can inspire, motivate and focus the work of the school, teachers and the school community, uniting them in common purpose. The learner profile is seen as a significant part of the development and education of the whole student. The attributes of the learner profile are: Inquirers, Knowledgeable, Thinkers, Communicators, Principled, Open- minded, Caring, Courageous, Balanced, and Reflective. These attributes are known within the school as the Learner Profile and are the dispositions we want the students to; feel, value and demonstrate towards people, the environment and their learning. At Glenroy West Primary School ( and in fact and PYP school) , a truly internationally minded person is one who is developing and living the attributes of the learner profile in all situations, not just at school. Uniform Reminder This is a reminder that to comply with our Sun Smart policy our community should be wearing their hats from Thursday September 1st. Please use these couple of weeks to find your child’s hat in time for this date.

On Tuesday 21st August Glenroy West Primary School celebrated the Children’s Book Council of Australia’s Book week. The children and staff all entered into the spirit of the day by dressing as their favourite book characters. All of the school took part in a parade where they could share their costumes with the rest of the school and appreciate and enjoy the efforts of others. Thank you to the families who came to enjoy the day as part of the school community. It is pleasing to see there is such a love of reading and books across the whole school. “I was Little Red Riding Hood and I was chosen to speak on the microphone. I love reading” Emma 34B “I liked the parade because we got to dance to fun music” Jessica 34B

This term in 3/4A, we have been learning about different celebrations. Students have written information texts to demonstrate what they have learned. The following are snippets from some student’s work. “The legend says that a dragon named Nian is very scary. Nian comes at the end of winter to scare the people of

China.” – Chloe McConnell

“Later, a wise man had an idea to scare Nian. The wise man’s idea was to make lots of sounds, the village to be

covered in red and to have fire. The idea worked to scare him away. He never came back.” George Adamopoulos

“Ramadan is a Muslim celebration. It is estimated that about 1.6 billion people in the world celebrate Ramadan.

That is about one quarter of the world. Did you know that about 604, 000 Australians celebrate Ramadan?” Jordi

Hernandez

“Ramadan is a celebration that follows the moon. Ramadan goes for a whole month and is the name of the

month.” – Yaman Jabbour

“Ramadan is celebrated each year. This year Ramadan was celebrated from 17 May to 14 June. Ramadan follows

the lunar calendar. Luna is another word for moon. Ramadan is before Eid.” – Hossein Kaab Omair

SAME DAY NOTIFICATION OF UNEXPLAINED STUDENT ABSENCES All parents and guardians can access COMPASS to log student absence or otherwise contact the school directly or via the school email [email protected] PLEASE READ THE DET FACT SHEET BELOW Fact sheet for parents/Carers, If your child is sick or absent, you are required to notify their school as soon as possible on the day of absence using one of the following methods-

1. Online Compass

2. Telephone the school office and let the staff know your child’s name, class, date of absence and reason

3. Email the school and provide the same information as stated above.

Why do I need to notify the school if my child is absent? Schools need to know when and why a child is absent and you need to know if your child isn’t at school. From the end of Term 2 2018, all Victorian Government schools are required to contact parents/carers as soon as practicable on the same day of an unexplained student absence. If you have not contacted the school to explain why, the absence will be marked as unexplained. This system also promotes daily attendance. Going to school daily is the single most important part of your child’s education, they learn new things every day- missing schools puts them behind. What is your responsibility? You are legally required to ensure your child attends school daily or you must provide an explanation for their absence. You should let the school know in advance of any upcoming absences. In order for schools to implement the same day notification requirement, it’s essential that you provide the school with your most up to date contact details. What is the school’s responsibility? The school must notify you of an unexplained absence in relation to your child as soon as practicable on the same day. EVERY DAY COUNTS- ATTENDANCE IT’S NOT OK TO BE AWAY.EVERY DAY COUNTS We are presently reviewing our processes for daily attendance and ‘lateness.’ DID YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD’S BEST LEARNING TIME IS THE START OF THE SCHOOL DAY? THAT’S WHEN EVERY MINUTE COUNTS THE MOST! It is very important to receive notification from parents or guardians when children are absent from school as we have an accountability to the Department of Education. Please use the following methods to inform us and include your child’s name and grade, date and reason for the absence.

Phone in

Written note

Speak directly to the Classroom teacher. Teachers have a Duty of Care to call parents if a child is absent

more than 2 days.

Respond to text message

At Glenroy West Primary School we are committed to providing your child with an excellent education. The building blocks of an excellent education begins with all students coming to school each and every day. Regular school attendance is vital and missing school days can have a big impact on a child’s future. Missing one day a fortnight will equate to missing four full weeks by the end of the year. Each day a student misses school puts them behind and can affect their educational outcomes. Some of the reasons for student absence at GWPS

Staying home to celebrate a birthday

Going shopping

Looking after a sibling

Spending time with a relative

Extended weekends

Overseas travel

Dental and medical appointment

Illness

If for any reason your child must be absent from school, parents or guardians are required to provide written notification, stating the reason for their child’s absence. This information will be retained by the teacher and archived by the school. This is a DET requirement.
