Editor’s Note

Hello Readers,

January, probably, is the busiest month in the academic year at SCIT wherein almost

everyone is busy in some or the other activity. That’s where it makes the task of coming

up with this month issue more challenging. You will find articles covering pure

technical workshop for students to Sanskrutik Mahotsav for all Symbiosis staff. You

will get to read some individual viewpoints and some experiences as a group.

We are happy to claim that SCIT grooms the overall personality of an individual.

Such an opportunity is thrown open for the students through SPL and SoccerSplash

S2 events. If you want to know more about who is the winner this season, what was the

spirit of participating and watching them, do read the cover story.

We have also covered two interviews this time; both the popular personalities - one

from the non-teaching and one from teaching faculties. I am sure you will feel

inspired after reading them. Read more about who were the guest speakers this month,

what were the workshops, how was the experience of team Eklavya being at Goa, how

Symbiosis Sankrutik Mahotsav rejuvenated the SCIT staff. We have a dedicated

article for those who missed the excitement of being at SCIT during Grafitti this year.

Do read it.

We are indeed indebted to all those who have already started appreciating this

initiative. It is a great motivation for the team to put in further efforts in making it

the favorite journal of SCIT. Still I sincerely appeal you to read and share your

Ruchi Nandita and Pratik Beedkar interviewed our very own Savitha Ma’am – the Placement Officer of SCIT

Ruchi: Please tell us about your experience at SCIT.

Ma’am: I joined SCIT in the year 2001 as P.A. to the then Director. I used to assist in placement related activities like maintaining company database, participating in B-School surveys which ranked SCIT along with the day to day work of assisting the Director. Gradually I realized my interest and inclination towards helping the students to get placed. After few years I took charge of the placements cell. Building a career path for the young MBA graduates and creating placement opportunity for them is my passion and I enjoy my work. Although I have completed my management studies, still I prefer to continue with my passion rather than joining the teaching profession. I am proud to be an SCITian.

Pratik: Since this is the month of Graffiti, please share your experiences in previous Graffiti events and expectations for the Graffiti 2013?

Ma’am: This year Graffiti will rock as always, as the students are putting in a lot of hard-work and dedication. The students are not only good in their academics but are also inclined towards extra-curricular activities. Also I would like to mention that we have an excellent creative team who has ornamented the campus with “NumeroGenesis” theme this year. We started off this event as “TechieKaun?” in 2005. But since the name seemed too technical, students of the 2009-2011 batch proposed changing its name to “Graffiti”. Graffiti justified both management and technical aspect of the event in true terms.

Pratik: What advice would you like to give to the students of SCIT?

Ma’am: Students should be more focused towards their aim. They should be clear in their thought-process and should be focused on their career path in the long run may be about 4-5 years down the line. Discipline is a MUST. I feel that the student must be an all-rounder and should be able to prove his adaptability in different environments.

Ruchi: What challenges you face to map profiles of students to the profiles offered by recruiters?

Ma’am: Surviving in the competition and maintaining confidentiality are some of the challenges I face in my job. We need to showcase our college by its uniqueness which is IT Business Management. Moreover, IT being a vast and diversified field, it sometimes becomes difficult to find a match among the opportunities in the industry.

Ruchi: About your family life?

Ma’am: My daughter is currently studying in the 11th standard. My husband is a businessman. We have been settled here for last 39 years. I have done my post-graduation from Symbiosis College of Arts and Commerce. I have a total of 16 years of work experience.

Pratik: What is the secret of your energy? How do you manage the hectic life of Placement Committee along with your personal life?

Reflections Jan 2013 Faculty Corner Rendezvous Ma’am: My students are my true source of energy. I spend most of my time with the students and am very fond of my students. When students perform well I am happy; when they don’t, I feel bad. I manage my personal and professional life quite well. Since my job is my passion, I enjoy it and don’t feel stressed out.

Ruchi: Thoughts on Reflections?

Ma’am: Truly a great work! It’s a very good initiative by students. I enjoy reading it. Keep your spirits up!

Ruchi Nandita interviewed our very own Rashmi Ma’am just before her last day at SCIT

Ruchi: Please tell us about your experience at SCIT.

Ma’am: I have just one word to say – Ecstatic. It has been a very overwhelming and mesmerizing journey of one year in SCIT! Everyone is so nice to be with – Faculties, staff, students. It’s by far the best teaching experience I have ever had in my whole career till date. A great experience indeed!

Ruchi: Any special moment in SCIT that you would like to share with us.

Ma’am: My performance at SCIT’s Foundation Day! It was spontaneous! I was a little anxious but I just flowed with the moment and the enthusiastic crowd. I never imagined that it would be so wonderful, but then, there it was. Another special moment was when I taught Kathak to the Japanese students on campus during their last visit. It is very memorable. SCIT gives unique and unconventional opportunities to encourage not just students but to also faculties like us.

Ruchi: If not a professor what would you have been?

Ma’am: If not a professor, I would have been into professional counselling and religious activities.

Ruchi: Any funny instance

Ma’am: The lunch sessions of the faculties sitting together are all very funny. Everyone is so genuine during that duration that lunch time is really very enjoyable. It’s a time when the faculties get out of their roles as teachers and interact among themselves; the real person comes out and it is so fun. I will genuinely miss it


Ruchi: How was your experience with the students? Any advice for them.

Ma’am: It was good. Students here have good intellect and they respond well. My only advice to the students is to be independent, proactive and not be spoon-fed. They should try out things themselves. It would need continuous and honest effort. Carrot and stick approach should be avoided. They should try to be as participative as they can.

Ruchi: Your hobbies

Ma’am: I like singing, reading, playing basketball and of course not to mention – dancing. I am a trained dancer and it is more like a profession for me.

Ma’am: It is a very good initiative and a great platform to express; it’s about the freedom of expression. A good medium to get to know the campus activities and is a collection of good articles.

Ma’am: I am from Delhi and originally from Uttarakhand. I have an experience of around 8-9 years in the teaching profession. Now I am moving to Bangalore. I have worked with SCIT for about an year.

Ma’am: It’s the feedback from students; their positive response gives me the energy and the boost. I am energized if I could relate to the class and students.

Ma’am: I will miss SCIT. Even though I would love to continue, but I have to shift due to some personal reasons. I will miss the faculties, the staff and the students. This institute gives a unique blend of facilities. I have had good rapport with all. I have fond memories and will take back a lot. “Missing” is an understatement.

It has been an amazing journey of a year with you ma’am. As most of us were from a non-

commerce background, our concepts with finance were not strong. We really needed

someone who, in a short time, could strengthen the fundamentals to prepare for the future.

And you really took that role well. You were more than a teacher; mentor and guide for us

students here. We now realize the value and importance of your strict disciplinary measures

and your occasional ‘scolding’ which has actually helped us in the long run.

The students and the whole of SCIT is going to miss you too; you always will be a part here

in the memories and in the values that this institution instills.

As rightly quoted by the Indian International Player Arata Izumi “Once 11 players play together football becomes an art”. Similar was the atmosphere around when around 20 teams from different Management Schools across Pune participated in SoccerSplash Season 2. SoccerSplash is a Flagship Sports event organized by SCIT. SoccerSplash Season-2 was held between 18th to 20th January 2013 with approximately 10 matches played each day. SoccerSplash was founded in the year 2012 where around 18 teams participated and the tournament was won by AISSMS Management College and the Runner up was the home team of SCIT. Mr. Pankaj Gaikwad and Mr. Sabitra Banerjee were the founder members and also the main Co-ordinators of the inaugural Season of SoccerSplash and the onus of taking the SoccerSplash to a higher level in Season-2 was handed over to Ashish Punia, Akashdeep Singh & Jimmy Roshania of the 2013 batch. SoccerSplash is a platform for all football lovers from various management colleges to come, show their love & talent for football. Matches were played under flood lights at Symbiosis Infotech Campus Hinjewadi, Pune. The main Mission of this event is to take futsal to a different level. Team of 6 players from same management college can take part and compete in this one of a kind event. Lots of cash prizes and trophies are up for stake. All the participating teams got VVIP match passes for Pune FC vs Sporting Club de Goa. SoccerSplash gives a complete flavor of the Symbi Sports culture. SoccerSplash Season-2 was Sponsored by SCIT and Pune FC together with around 8 more sponsors which had Evonix Technologies as website partners, Online Partners were MBASkool.com, Styling partners as ColorSplash, Food partner was Brikks pizza, QuizCraft as Knowledge Partner, Sports partner was Dolphin Sports, IT partner was OM Computers, Computer Solution partner was Priyal Enterprises and last but not the least, Goodwill Partner was Swad Punjab Ka.

Our Chief Guest for the opening ceremony was our very own Prof. DR. PRASENJIT SEN where Sir also showed some Soccer skills.The final turned out to be a battle of rivals from the Symbiosis family where SCMHRD locked horns with SIBM.

SCMHRD had a lot of home support which helped them trounce SIBM 2-1 in the finals and life the SoccerSplash Season 2 trophy. SCIT and IISER were the other two Semi finalists. Closing ceremony witnessed Mr. Yogesh Sarwade give away the Prizes. Winners- SCMHRD Runners up- SIBM Best Player- Varun Gill (SIBM) Goal Machine- Md. Amir Sadiq (IISER) Safe hands- Karma Bhutia (IISER)

All in all it was a complete 3 days of soccer extravaganza and Soccer was the Ultimate winner. This event was conducted in the Symbiosis Infotech Campus, which includes SCIT, SIIB and SCMHRD, from 9th Jan to 17th Jan 2013. Here 8 team names out of 9 (Kolkata Knight Riders , Delhi Dare Devils, MUMBAI INDIANS, Royal Challengers Bangalore, Chennai Super Kings, Rajasthan Royals, Kings XI Punjab, Pune Warriors India) were auctioned publicly on the 3rd of Jan ‘13 and the group of students who quoted the highest price bagged it. This year Rajasthan Royals was the most expensive team sold in the SPL at the sum of Rs12500 and it was owned by SIIB students. Apart from that, two complete teams and one partial team were owned by SCIT student namely Royal Challengers Bangalore, Pune Warriors India and Kolkata Knight Riders. A total amount of Rs92500 was collected after biding of 8 teams. Then each team owner was provided with 10 Crores of virtual bounty to buy players in the players auctioning. A total of 149 students enrolled for playing the tournament and their auction was conducted on the 8th Jan ’13. The players were assigned with 30 lakhs as base price and their prices were quoted in multiples of 2 lakhs. In that fashion, with a minimum of 10 players, each team had to buy with a upper cap of 12 players. The 8 teams were divided into 2 pools consisting of 4 teams in each pool. Initially they played in a round robin way and the two top teams from each team was got through for 2nd round. Then the concept of Qualifier and Eliminator was applied for deciding the first three positions. Qualifier: top teams (Kolkata Knight Riders and Chennai Super Kings) from each both pools played against each other and winner qualifies for the final match. Eliminator: rest two teams (Delhi Dare Devils and Pune Warriors India) played against each other and the winner of eliminator played against the looser of qualifier round to qualify into finals. The two teams qualified for finals were Chennai Super Kings and Delhi Dare Devils. Total of 16 matches were played in the tournament and the tournament was won by Delhi Dare Devils. Overall, as always, this year too it was a fantastic event organized by the sports and cultural committee of SCIT; and a great platform for students to display their cricketing talent. * Special thanks to Anupam Prasad for his contribution to this article.

For every Punjabi, Lohri finds a very special place in their heart; and for SIC, Lohri exuberates a similar feeling for every student studying here. People, especially in the northern Indian states of Punjab, Haryana and parts of Himachal Pradesh, are known for their celebrations during Lohri — the long-awaited bonfire festival — when they can come out of their homes and celebrate the harvesting of the Rabi (winter) crops and give in to the relaxing traditional folk songs and dances. Significance In Punjab, the breadbasket of India, wheat is the main winter crop, which is sown in October and harvested in March or April. In January, the fields come up with the promise of a golden harvest, and farmers celebrate Lohri during this period before the cutting and gathering of crops. Customs & Legends On the morning of Lohri, children go from door to door singing and demanding the Lohri 'loot' in the form of money and eatables like til (sesame) seeds, peanuts, jaggery, or sweetslike, gachak, rewri, etc. They sing in praise of Dulha Bhatti, a Punjabi avatar of Robin Hood who robbed the rich to help the poor, and once helped a miserable village girl out of her misery by arranging for her marriage like his own sister. The Bonfire Ritual In the evening, with the setting of the sun, huge bonfires are lit in the harvested fields and in the front yards of houses; and people gather around the rising flames, circle around (parikrama) the bonfire and throw puffed rice, popcorn and other munchies into the fire, shouting "Aadar aye dilather jaye" (May honor come and poverty vanish!), and sing popular folk songs. This is a sort of prayer to Agni, the Fire God, to bless the land with abundance and prosperity. After the parikrama, people meet friends and relatives, exchange greetings and gifts, and distribute prasad (offerings made to god). The prasad comprises five main items: til, gajak, jaggery, peanuts, and popcorn. Winter savories are served around the bonfire with the traditional dinner of makki-di-roti (multi-millet hand-rolled bread) and sarson-da-saag (cooked mustard herbs).

Song & Dance Bhangra and gidda dance by men and women begins after the offering to the bonfire. Dancing continues till late night with new groups joining in amid the beat of drums. Like every year Lohri preparations at SIC started almost a month before with seniors from all three college- SCIT, SIIB and SCMHRD conducted meetings with juniors and providing them all the guidance required. Most of all the rituals were followed with utmost care and the Ardas (a

prayer to a superior authority) was also done before the bonfire. Bonfire was ignited by the honorable guest of the evening, Mr & Mrs Kadam. The bonfire fir was followed by Special Bhangra & Gidda performances. As the tradition goes, Lohri 2013 also had a surprise element where the dancers of the last dance troupe were introduced by the organizers on a tractor riding them onto the dancing area. There were special decorations done by the creative team where they tried to replicate a hut

and also did a complete makeover of the mess adding to the ambience and delicious taste of the special Punjabi food. Lohri 2013 team for the first time also made a small contribution to the Prayatna team in the form of some cash. All in all, Lohri 2013 was a grand success and the team hopes to make it bigger and better next year as it has been doing for the past years.

Symbiosis Sanskrutik Mahotsav, in true sense, is a symbiotic culmination of extra ordinary talents showcased by the valiant workforce of the SIU. This year it was celebrated on 21st January 2013. The wide spectrum of the competition included various different categories, right from sports to cooking to cultural. This year I was fortunate enough to participate and represent our mighty SCIT. After clearing the elimination rounds, I realized that I was participating in not one or two but three competitions. So this year I gave the members of the SCIT fraternity enough reasons to scream (encourage) their team in finals. The events I participated were Personality contest, Dance competition and Antakshari competition. The entire experience was quite surreal. Although that day I was working like a busy bee, changing costumes and hopping from one event to another. But it was worth the exertion. So my first event, personality contest went well. I can say that since I ended up winning a runner up trophy (although with the kind of performance I gave, I was hoping to win the first prize). Then came the dance competition! My forte! This year the organizers had given a theme – colours for the even. All the dancers had to use it in their respective performances. I thought I performed well but not good enough to fetch a prize for that. However, technically only I followed the theme, unlike the other performers and especially the one who won! Anyhow, the last even of the day for me was Antakshari. In the preliminary round, me and my partner (Prof Sadhana Ghalsasi) landed on a tie breaker in 2 other teams. Unfortunately we couldn’t break the tie and our dream of winning the competition came to an end. Howsoever, we were very happy that one SCIT team (Prof Anuradha and Prof Apoorva) had already entered the finals. So our participation changed as that of being an audience, cheering them up! Anyway, prize or no prize, I completely had a ball with the whole event. I am certainly going to miss this very much. My best wishes to SCIT for giving tough competition to other symbiosis institutes in future as well.

The Web & Media Team had their heads up even before the theme for the Graffiti’13 was finalized and we had started working on the structure for a new website. However, plans for new website was dropped in the later phases as we were given a deadline of 4 days to make graffiti.scit.edu LIVE. The UI revamp started the very same day and Yes, we as a team delivered it on time. And then began an endless era of making posters, flexes and of course Graffiti’13 Teasers

All the work pertaining to W&M Team lies before the D-day and hence all of us (Naveen, Arjun, Tauseef, Malav & I) were helping & volunteering in various events so that Graffiti’13 emerges out to be the biggest and yes it did!

7 of us were selected to represent the Marketing and Branding Team for Graffiti’13. During our interviews it was mentioned that we would be responsible for establishing a strong online footprint for Graffiti. Each one amongst us was in charge for one or the other social media tool. Our team focused majorly on three channels for effective branding – Facebook, Twitter and Blogs. The aim was to generate a buzz before Graffiti commences. Team M&B hosted an array of Pre-Graffiti online events that left the audience want more!


The stats did the talking for Team M&B! Over 2,125 likes on our official Facebook page and more than a 1,000 hits on Graffiti’s official Blog! This solid online presence that was fashioned from the cumulative efforts of Team M&B was Graffiti’s link to the outside world!

It was clearly seen that the people who were working for Graffiti ’13 to be the Best GRAFFITI ever, were very excited to achieve this vision they had when they all have selected for different committee. I indeed was also got that lucky chance to be a part of GRAFFITI Web n Media Team. We all were having several ideas to make this Graffiti 2013 best when it comes to creativity and visibility for outside world. Rohit Menon (Main Coordinator) took the responsibility to handle Graffiti Web n Media Team and he has worked very hard with us to achieve what we wanted to. We had our meeting with Dr. Raman Sir and Savitha Ma’am, regarding the website development. Meeting ended up with a deadline for us to make Graffiti Website live in 5 days. All the members were contributing to make Graffiti’13 Website to be one of the best amongst all the Event websites, and when the D-day came for us to show our hard work to Dr. Raman Sir and Savitha Ma’am, they were very happy by our work which we did by working for continuously for 5 days by skipping our lectures,. During these days it happened many at times that my eyes were getting blurred since working for 10-12 hrs a day on laptop continuously for 5 days


We thought that our major task is achieved now we just have to concentrate on Videos, Posters and Flexes etc. But this was just the beginning; again we were ready step up for the Events team or by Sponsors Team. I hope we did a good job to justify ourselves as well as all the seniors who interviewed us hoping that we will do best.

When we had to go for PR activity to different colleges we actually got to know as to how renowned is our college and Graffiti. And with this we got to know how much work had to be done.


After all that promotion we felt that we were getting quite good response due to our pitching and everything started to go as planned after a lot of pitching and promotion. And as we had some of the best exciting events, we started to get a huge footfall. Overall it was a very overwhelming experience.

I did my debut into Public Relations with Graffiti 2013. I had an impression that PR work is only selling the events to the students of other colleges. But now I know it’s much more than that. It’s a kind of management and that too instantaneous. You just don’t speak to a person about your college events but you speak according to his/her reaction, his/her gestures. You have to frame your sentences for each person differently. You look at people from distance and with the look on their face you know, ”Bang On-this is my target”. So, what I learned from my PR work is how to talk to people frankly and convince them in those two minutes, even if you are seeing them for the first time and would probably not see them again.


Since we were able to convince people to come to your college events and were able to build an image for your college, Graffiti is the time when we had to maintain it at your best. People call you to know where your college is located, you need to respond to them, they call you for registrations, you need to address that, they meet you at the PR desk; you need to guide them. Coordinating with the events team for information on how many participants actually appeared on the day was also an important job for us. So, finally I think that one of the most exciting and challenging job is of the PR people because they are the one who generate awareness at the start and take that to the end.

I have been with Graffiti ‘13 since the day of its inception. I was selected by the conveners of 2011-2013 batch for the Events team and have worked for Events team from Day-1. It was fun preparing events, planning and executing them. We completed dry runs for Cric Subasta for getting the feedback of our fellow friends. The game turned out to be awesome.


Conducting the event for the participants of other colleges was fun too. They thoroughly enjoyed the game and gave very good feedback verbally and on the feedback wall. Waiting or Graffiti ’14 from now on!

We had a PR team of about 40 odd people. Initially we were not sure how to go about. We started collecting informal contacts through friends in other colleges and contacted SPOCS of their colleges. Then we started cold calling these colleges for desk set-up permissions. By this time events were finalized and we had received the needed posters and flexes. Our team had worked very hard because it is difficult to daily spend the entire day pitching. For this we needed to be very crazy! You have to attract the attention of the crowd to explain the details of the events. Sometimes there were no collections but the team needed to be kept motivated. Slowly we started getting registrations and in no time we reached upper limits caps of events.


The event was a huge success and all hard work paid off. We had almost 700 participants’ on-campus. Seniors especially Parag guided us a lot. Even on D-day desk set-up went flawless…no major glitches…It was a great show indeed!

While working as a Member of M&B Team some of the amazing facts that I come across are: - Reach to 68,159 people in a single day - 300% growth in Number of followers We witnessed Queries, Participation, Suggestions, involvement from all corner of India. The First time ever in history of Graffiti that independent Online Marketing & Branding Team was formed, consisting of 7 members. It was really a wonderful learning experience to work with a talented team mates.

We reached around 20000 people. With more than thousand participants from large number of Colleges 2 days Flagship event had set very high standards for coming year. Advitiya, RockShow, DJ night, etc everything was just wow! I volunteered two events IPL Auctioning, Corporate Strategy. Seeing such a huge response for Graffiti and the praise received from main coordinators was a completely overwhelming experience.

We at Eklavya have always on a look out for places to shine; opportunities where we can explore ourselves more; delve deeper into ourselves to bring out our inner being and try to put forward a thought in front of the society. So keeping up with this tradition, the 5.0 generation of Eklavyians headed out to capture hearts at the Channel V Nokia India Fest which was held in Goa! After qualifying for the India Fest from the Pune region, we were all pumped up and ready for the final performance at Goa. We started off our journey from Pune by the Goa Express with all the enthusiasm. As soon as we took our seats, an old gentleman in a nice suit caught our attention. He seemed to be a familiar face. Suddenly someone from the group realized that he was none other than Mr. Sudhir Moghe – a veteran Marathi actor who has done many Marathi plays and movies. We caught up with him and exchanged greetings. He was also on the way to Goa for a stage performance. We were all shocked to hear that even at the age of 84, he was so enthusiastic about the stage! We invited him to see our practice which he graciously accepted and was very much impressed with our dialogue delivery. After we were done with our practice, we sang along and everyone was having fun. Travelling overnight, we reached Goa in the morning at around 6.30. Goa – what a place! A land full of sunshine, palm trees, beaches and wonderful people. After searching for a place to settle down, we freshened up and hit it to Baga Beach where the Channel V Nokia India Fest was hosted this year. And we were blown out seeing the whole setup! It was huge! Spread over quite a large area, we had many colleges from all over India participating. The place was literally thronging with activities. At one place we had DJ Suketu upping the ante with some really foot tapping music, informal events happening everywhere, separate sections allocated for different events! We registered our team and were informed that the streetplay event was scheduled the next day So we returned back the next day determined to win the event! We had seen the whole setup and were pretty much convinced that it will be hard work. The event was set up in a tent and when we entered a previous event was still underway. The judges were having an immense theatre background and were acclaimed in their field. So we waited for our event to start with a lot of anticipation and revising our lines continuously. They were the 21 colleges from all over India participated in the streetplay competition. These colleges included the likes of Hindu College from Delhi, Punjab Engineering College, Bhavans College from Mumbai, other regional colleges from Orissa, Gujarat etc.

Before the event kicked off, there was some drama waiting to unfold. While the convener started to announce the rules for the events there was some confusion. Few colleges were given incorrect information about the duration of the play. Now the rules said that the duration is less than what was told earlier. This created a furore among the participating colleges and there was a huge chaos. Fortunately there was no confusion on our part. After a lot of consolation, there was some relief and the event finally began! The first one to perform was the prestigious Hindu College from Delhi. Amongst the 21 participating colleges, they were the one to watch out for. And they did what they are best at - scintillating performance with the theme ‘Incredible India’. They vowed everyone with their acting skills. After some superb performances, it was our turn. We prayed for a few seconds and bang, the convener announced – Eklavya! Determined to win this coveted competition, we started our performance in trademark Eklavya style – Suno Jara, Suno Jara – calling the audience to pay attention to what we want to talk about. Ours was the theme – ‘Society’s outlook towards LGBTs’. It talked about the 21st century India & how it treats the LGBT community. Even with the law giving them the freedom to choose their lives, how society, peer pressure and the so called Moral Police do what they don’t understand; rather, they don’t want to! This theme was put forward to the audience using different scenes such as the youth’s attitude towards LGBTs, an orphanage denying the right to adopt a child by a gay couple, a Khap panchayat honour killing and finally a marital rape! Some hair-raising performances by the Eklavyians earned big round of applauses from the audience. By far, this was the most difficult performance for Eklavya with Farhan Akhtar belting out some popular rock songs and a crowd of around 10,000 odd people shouting their hearts out just in the vicinity. So we have to ensure our dialogue delivery is immaculate and audible to the audience. After an honest performance and earning accolades from the crowd and judges, we were very happy. More so, because everyone knew that everyone in the team gave their hundred per cent! We left no stone unturned in making sure this was the best performance till date! The winners of the competition were Punjab Engineering College, Hindu College and Bhavans College. Disappointed – yeah a little, but we were more than happy for winning hearts!

SCIT, in association with SAP Labs, Bangalore organized a three-day workshop ‘Train the Trainer’ on SAP Business By Design. Target audience consisted of faculties from colleges such as SCMHRD, SIIB, IILM, New Delhi, etc. Prof. SVK Bharathi took over the session as the facilitator and shared insights on SAP Business By Design in a span covering three days. Participants learned the underlying framework of SAP By Design, understood the key concepts and applied them in the hands-on training session. Reference and training material was provided by SAP Labs which benefited the participants a lot in understanding the nuances of the subject. Hands-on sessions covered modules such as User Account Creation, Profile Update, Employee Self-Service, Purchase Order Generation, Customer Invoicing, etc. This session helped the participants to understand SAP Business ByD in a practical way. Many related resources from SAP UA Portal were also shared by Prof. Bharathi to help us know more in this exciting field of enterprise integration.

With the inquisitive mind of knowing more about ethical hacking, SCIT witnessed a great participation from its own students and from the students of SICSR, Pune. A three-day workshop of ‘Ethical Hacking’ was organized by Tech Defence in collaboration with Entrepreneurship Development Cell, IIT Delhi.

Workshop was conducted by the senior employee of Tech Defence, Rahul Tyagi. He started with basic concepts of information security and covered various aspects of hacking such as E-mail hacking, Web Application Hacking, Vulnerability Scanning, Windows Password Cracking, Software Version Cracking, etc. His practical insights on proxy servers, his experiences with real-life case studies helped the budding and curious hackers to understand the true essence of ethical hacking.

The jolly nature of Mr. Rahul Tyagi helped the students to gel well with him which resulted in a more lively discussion on hacking concepts. The students also dirtied their hands in testing various scenarios covered as part of the workshop. After a rigorous and value-added session covering three days, all participants received a certificate of Certified Ethical Hacking Expert (CEHE Level 2.0) and a one year free access to HackTrack portal. The workshop was well organized and coordinated by JP from 2012-14 Batch.

It’s hard to imagine a Smartphone with no apps installed. And when it comes to Android, then we have the flexibility to not only use such apps but also develop them and upload them to Google Play store. With this intent in mind, SCIT organized National Android Developer Competition (NADC) 2013 in association with IIT Delhi. Workshop was conducted by a professional android developer, Tazeel, who is also working with Sapient, Bangalore. Tazeel shared a brief introduction on Android development and very quickly students started with hands-on experience of developing applications on Android platform. Beginning with developing ‘ Hello World’ application, very soon we shifted our gears to build some more advanced apps such as ‘Media Player Application’ and also witnessed a tour of Android simulator. This two-day workshop generated sufficient interest to all the attendees (from SCIT and SICSR) to build their own apps and upload them for public use. At the end of workshop, a competition of creating a particular app was organized. Students of SICSR won the competition. At the end, all the attendees received Certificate of Participation from ARK Technosolutions and IIT, Delhi. The workshop was well organized and coordinated by Jay Magdani from 2012-14 Batch.

The month of January can also be known as “The Guest Lecturers’ month” in case of SCIT 2012-14 batch! There were many guest lecturers who visited campus and gave their valuable insights to students on various subjects. Let’s re-wise some of them here!

Mr. Pawan Desai, COO & Partner - MitKat Advisories Pvt. Ltd | Topic: BCP DR insights on live projects Mr Pawan Desai is Chief Operating Officer and partner of MitKat Advisories. He has a vast experience in Information Security field. IT Security is one of the most favorite elective streams among students. Hence students especially from this elective are always eager to gain more knowledge. Mr Desai gave his insights for Business continuity plan and Disaster recovery and management. He covered following areas: • Security Industry Market Trends, Predictions and Forecasts • Emerging Information Security Threats • Industry trends (from Governance and compliance perspective) • Risks (From a software development perspective) • Certifications in a security profile Students gained ample knowledge from this guest lecture.

Indian Power Sector is one of the booming sectors. SCITians were lucky enough to get the highly experienced person from the industry to gain

knowledge about Power Industry. The guest lecturer was Mr Sukant Bapat who is in higher level management position in TATA Power. He shared his experience regarding power industry, the challenges faced by the Indian power industry in recent times and need of innovation to make the optimum use of renewable energy sources like wind energy, solar energy etc. He also shared the scope of IT in Power sector. Students got good knowledge about Indian Power sector.

The Guest lecture series goes International!!! We had a guest lecturer from Australia named Joshua Mackenzie. He is the co-founder of “Development Beyond Learning” firm which basically gives various types of trainings to the students to sharpen their skills. Joshua Mackenzie and his team beautifully presented the content to students. The lecture was very interactive and interesting. The students really enjoyed his style of delivering the lecture. He delivered lecture on how to become successful in life by implementing fundamental principles and also gave very useful tips. During Question-Answer session, he also gave the free copy of the book written by him to the student who asked the “Best Question”. The lucky person was Nitin Saxena.

This was one of the best guest lectures in the month of January. Market Research is very interesting subject. If you have a person from one of the world class market research firm, the knowledge you are going to gain is just amazing. It happened in SCIT when Mr Shrikant Kulkarni, Director, Nielsen visited SCIT to explain the Market Research in real life business environment. The session was very fruitful and knowledge gaining for all the students as well as faculty members. Students along with the faculties made the session very interactive and live. Also the richness of the content delivered by speaker was of immense use to all the students as well as faulty members! Special thanks to Anuradha Ma’am for arranging the guest lecture!

What chance does the country have if it cannot let a girl child pursue her dreams? She can be anyone, a sister, wife, mother or a friend. And we are the ones who victimize her, punish her for no fault of hers. We are all at fault, irrespective of our age, region, religion or gender. And we have not changed, no matter how many Nirbhayas suffer and die. We have not woken up, our mindset has not changed. Deep down we are still the same old chauvinistic society that looks down on the other gender. We talk of morals and equality, but from within, most of us don’t believe in it. It becomes easy for us to attack them, abuse them, malign them and use them. Our attitude has not yet changed, neither has our outlook or stance. And till the time, that happens, this country is not a place where a girl can be born, grow, learn, aspire and live like she wants. And that is the sad truth of the country today! And that is her story today!
