The lyrics are based on the prayer by a 13 th century bishop, Saint Richard of Chicester. The song affirms that one should pray to do three things: “See thee more clearly, Love thee more dearly, Follow thee more nearly, day by day.” In that same spirit I pray that we will connue to do these things month by month as we have done. AUGUST/SEPTEMBER I am so very grateful to God for the response of God’s people to help others in the aſtermath of Harvey. That response began almost immediately aſter the rain stopped and the water receded. During those first two weeks, we distributed supplies and food to almost 1200 families, did the necessary demolion in almost 60 homes, and provided hospitality to others who assisted in feeding people. That does not count what Southmainers did individually helping their neighbors. I am very grateful for the generosity of our members in giving almost $40,000 designated “Harvey Relief” and for the giſts that we received from churches and individuals from Texas and eight other states. I am so grateful for the many persons who volunteered me and energy. OCTOBER On the first day of this month, we will celebrate Communion together in both morning worship mes. Then on October 22, our deacons will take Communion to our members who are unable to be with us in worship. We do this twice a year. It is a wonderful way of being the presence of Christ with our “Homebound” members. The special Ordinaon Service for our newly elected Deacons will be in the evening worship of October 1. NOVEMBER Of course, the highlight of this month will be the privilege of expressing gratude to God for his many blessings. We will gather as families to celebrate Thanksgiving on Thursday, November 23. At the beginning of that week, we will gather as a church family to celebrate Thanksgiving at our tradional banquet on Sunday, November 19. DECEMBER As another year draws to a close, we will enjoy the wonderful music of Christmas. For the second me we will present our giſt to the community in the interacve experience called “A South Main Bethlehem,” December 8-10. We will pray that God will again bless us and bless the many persons who will come and walk through our village represenng the place where Jesus was born. Two weeks later we will gather on Sunday, Christmas Eve, to be blessed by our Service of Carols and Candles. I do pray that we will seek to see God more clearly, love him more dearly, and follow him more nearly, in all that we do, month by month. Like many of us, Carol Lozano, loves her church family and this building. Unlike the rest of us, she cares for our building in a way most of us wouldn’t think about. Carol has spent the last 17 years working with South Main in the custodial capacity. She works diligently to keep our facility clean and helps prepare for and clean-up after

the numerous events we schedule on a daily basis. Before coming to us, Carol worked ten years for the school district in the custodial department and before that she worked in food service at a local nursing home. Her many years of experience is a great benefit to South Main and I am happy she chooses to work with us. Carol is a mother of four young women who have blessed her with six grandchildren and another to be added to the family this month! Carol’s favorite part of the day is her early morning prayer time and her favorite scripture is Psalm 23. So that you may get to know Carol better, here are some fun facts: If she won the lottery Carol would give a big portion to SMBC first.

Then she would buy some land and have a neighborhood built just for her family including her mom, siblings and spouses, and all their offspring!

Carol’s dream vacation would be to spend time on the white beaches of Florida.

Her favorite movies are Grease and Urban Cowboy. She likes The Notebook and Titanic, too, but confesses she can’t watch them in their entirety because she gets so emotional.

In her free time, Carol likes being with her family and, believe it or not, likes to clean her home!

The favorite part of her job is the variety of duties that each day brings. She wouldn’t like to have the same routine every day.

Carol’s favorite birthday cake is a yellow cake with vanilla frosting topped with strawberries.

Choirs are off and running this Fall, even through a soggy beginning. I trust you and yours are faring well and things are improving regarding Harvey and the issues he brought. Our smallest singers from ages 3 through grade 6 are having a great time on Wednesdays. The two older groups, grades 3-6, are preparing to sing for you in both morning services on Sunday, October 8. This year’s group is a talented bunch, and you will enjoy their contributions to worship throughout the year.

Rehearsals are underway for our students in grades 7-12. They will travel off campus for a music/ministry concert on Sunday, October 29. They are in the process of learning music for their Music and Ministry Trip set for June 16-22, as well as preparing selections for the advent season. The group rehearses Sunday afternoons from 4:30-5:30 and welcomes all who are ready to join in on the fun. The Adult Choir, along with the Prairie View University Chorus and the Adult Choir from Clear Lake United Methodist Church presented selections from the music of composer, Rollo Dilworth on September 17. You will enjoy some of those selections in the upcoming weeks. This group will begin transitioning towards the music of advent. It certainly is not too late to join one of our choirs. We welcome all and look forward to meeting you and calling you friend. You will notice new singers and perhaps a new instrumentalist in our band that leads our 10:45 worship. Tony DeSoto is doing a wonderful job leading this group and is always looking for additional talent both vocal and instrumental. Bobie Miller

Our College & Career Ministry moves into the Fall semester with some awesome transition in progress, and I am excited to see God work in this important area of ministry in our church! We are so blessed as a church to have such dedicated hard working leaders who love the Lord, and who love working with this group. Each Sunday morning their faithfulness is obvious, and God is blessing their efforts! EDGE, our Monday night in depth Bible Study group continues to see growth, and it is so exciting to be a part of! This group is living through a crucial phase in their lives where many life lessons are learned, and it is paramount they understand how to apply the truth of God’s Word and promises of Christ to their individual experiences! Please continue to pray for our College and Career ministry and its leaders as it moves into an exciting new phase here at SMBC! Brian Sadler

Upward Soccer and Air It Out Flag Football season has begun after a delay due to hurricane Harvey. Pray God will continue to be at work in and through this ministry. Join us on a Saturday morning to watch some Soccer or Flag Football. As this month begins, I will be transitioning from Minister of Family Life to Minister of Young Adults. God has shown me so much through Family Life Ministry. There are so many people to thank for allowing me to grow as a minister. Thank you to all of those I have served alongside of in FLC ministry over the years. A special word of appreciation to Loyd Wells for all that he does for the FLC and his incredible servant leadership. Thank you South Main for always supporting me and my family over the years. The FLC will be handed over to Kevin Richard. Pray for him as he begins Ministry as the new Minister of Family Life. As my wife and I begin this new journey in ministering to young adults at South Main, we are excited and know God has many wonderful plans in store. This is an amazing body of Christ and I thank God all the time for South Main. Tico Montoya

I’m thankful for the opportunity to begin serving as your Family Life Minister. Tico and I have changed offices and are getting settled in our new responsibilities. I ask for your prayers as I transition into this new position, and I look forward to serving each of you. Kevin Richard

Our SMBC Student Ministry is enjoying the Fall and the exciting events it brings with it. We recently held our first of four scheduled “Friendsday Wednesday” events which are designed to encourage our students to invite their friends for the Youth Worship Service that designated date, and it was a HUGE success! God blessed the efforts of our students who did a great job of inviting friends who would otherwise not be attending church. As a result, many visitors were able to hear the Good News of Jesus Christ, and for some it was their first time hearing it! Praise God for blessing this event! Our annual Youth Tailgate Service will include grilled burgers, fun games, and great worship! This event is an excellent outreach opportunity. As Fall moves into Winter, our Student Ministry will engage in several special events from Destination Unknown outings, to local missions work, to holiday fellowships and other Christ filled activities!
