Mayor Todd Honors Veterans

A special luncheon celebrated the town's military veterans Tuesday, November 11 as Millstadt Village Mayor Mike Todd came to the senior center to heap praise on those who devoted their lives to protecting the nation. "We can't all be heroes. Some of us have to stand along the road and clap as the heroes walk by," said Patty Evansco, director of Millstadt Township Senior Services, using a quote attributed to actor Will Rogers. "So to all the heroes in the audience, and across the nation, we thank and salute you with the utmost respect and appreciation." Mayor Mike Todd said that he "stand(s) in admiration" of the people who have stepped up to risk their lives in service to the nation, especially as that number has dwindled over the generations. Jim Bereitschaft brought some medals and a memory box from days in the Vietnam War. Mayor Todd presented flags of appreciation to Lester Eckert (Army), William Anderson (Army), Dennis Fleming(Marines), John McLaughlin(Army) and Dan Smith(Marines). In attendance were veterans of multiple branches of services including Army and Marines. The retired railroaders were also there on that day.

December I had so much to tell you that we ran out of room in our Newsletter so I will include in my note to you this month. On Tuesday December 9th we will be going to the Millstadt Greenhouse for a tour and chance to see the beautiful poinsettias that they grow there.

If you are interested please be sure to sign up early. Only those on the signup sheet will receive the free plant. Be sure to join us on December 10 at 11:00 am for a Wine & Cheese & Bing Social to celebrate the Holiday Season. We will play Bing Crosby holiday tunes as we serve wine and cheese. On Tuesday, December 16 a member of the Walgreens staff will be at 11:30 am to check your blood pressure. Starting in January 2015 we will be giving a special “Birthday Basket” away each month. Everyone that is 60 or over and has a birthday that month will qualify to be in the drawing. Each month the drawing will be on the first Tuesday of the month. The “Birthday Basket” will contain gift cards from Millstadt stores, snacks and special gifts for the winner. You must be present to win if you are a Congregate Diner or receive a Home Delivered Meal that day if you are a Meals on Wheels client. (Frozen meal customers will have had to receive a meal on the Monday before drawing). The drawing for January 2015 will be January 7, 2015. My Christmas wish for all of you is to have wonderful things come to you!

Clothing Donations Is it time to clean closets to make room for those Christmas gifts you know you’ll be getting? Remember your clothing items donated to the collection box at the IGA parking lot will add to the proceeds IGA collects and donates to the Senior Center. Proceeds from the clothing collection box at IGA along with funds from aluminum cans collected at the Community Center help maintain the Meals on Wheels program for Millstadt Township. With the help of your donations 20,000 meals were served to Seniors in Millstadt Township last year.

Spice Sugar Cookies A little taste of spice with the molasses, cloves, ginger and cinnamon, but not too much, the spice amounts may be adjusted to suit your taste. ¾ cup butter 2 cups flour 1 cup sugar 2 tsp. baking soda ¼ cup molasses ½ tsp. cloves 1 egg ½ tsp. ginger ½ tsp. salt 1 tsp. cinnamon Cream butter and sugar, add molasses, and egg, mix well. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. Chill four hours, or overnight. Shape into balls and roll in sugar. Bake at 375 degrees for 8-10 minutes. Makes 3-4 dozen.

The Glass Pickle Ornament The pickle ornament was considered a special tree decoration by many families in Germany. There, the fir tree was decorated on Christmas Eve. It was always the last ornament to be hung on the Christmas tree, with the parents hiding it in the green boughs among the other ornaments. When the children were allowed to view the tree on Christmas morning they would begin gleefully searching for the pickle ornament. For they knew that whoever first found the special ornament would receive an extra little gift left by St. Nicholas for the most observant child.

The Millstadt Historical Society held its annual homemade winemaking contest on Tuesday, November 25th, at

the Community Center. There were ten contestants in this years’ event. Cindy Keller won 1st place for the second year in a row with her White Zinfandel wine. 2nd place went to Les Mehrtens, with his homemade blackberry wine. Third place winner was Ryan Mehrtens with a pear wine. After the winners were chosen, historical society members and guests enjoyed all varieties of wines entered in the contest along with homemade summer sausage donated by Tom Baltz. Class of 1964 Raymond W. Millaway, 85, of Millstadt, Ill., formerly

of Cahokia, Ill., and St. Louis, Mo., born Dec. 7, 1928, in St. Louis, Mo., died Friday Nov. 21, 2014, at Alton Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Alton, Ill. Raymond was a retired plumber and former owner of Ray's Plumbing Supply

Parts Inc. of St. Louis, Mo. He was a member of Bethany United Methodist Church, Columbia, Ill., and former member of Cahokia Park United Methodist Church, Cahokia, Ill. He was also very active with the Millstadt Senior Center and the Community. He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty J. Millaway; his parents, Ray and Anna Millaway; two sisters, Maryann Dahms, Dorothy Lechner; nieces, Susan Prichard and Carol Dahms; and a great-great-nephew, Owen Dahms. Surviving are his niece, Gail (Greg) Phelps of Edwardsville, Ill.; two nephews, Henry (Roseann) Dahms of Leslie, Mo., Allen Dahms of St. Louis, Mo.; brothers-in-law, John Lechner of Glen Carbon, Ill., and Henry Dahms Sr. of Leslie, Mo. He was a dear uncle to four generations of nieces and nephews and a great friend

DID YOU SIGN IN? Knowing who is at lunch at the Center is important for a number of reasons. First of all it’s good to keep track so if someone isn’t there for a few days we can contact them to make sure everything is ok. Second, when you sign in and are registered we are able to submit your name to receive our grant money to help pay for the meals. A way to look at it is that if you aren’t registered and signed in we can’t send a bill for your lunch to the Area Agency on Aging.

Make Christmas A Little Brighter Your donation to the local food bank can help a Millstadt family have a holiday food basket delivered to their home. The Millstadt food pantry is in need of Kleenex, canned stew, tuna, cake mixes, pasta, peanut butter, canned soup, toilet paper, laundry detergent, soap and almost any other donation you can make. Monetary donations are also accepted and needed. The pantry relies on donations from the Boy Scouts and other community food drives, as well as donations from individuals and churches. Donations may also be made at the Village Office lobby. The food pantry is staffed by a team of volunteers and serves the Village of Millstadt, Millstadt Township and the Millstadt School District.

In mid-November the First National Bank of St. Louis became the Central Bank of St. Louis. Gone with the old name and signage and in came the new over the week-end of November 15, 16. Now, we see a green and white bank sign with the name “Central”. Across the street from the bank, on the corner of Washington and Jefferson, a McDonald’s is on the drawing board to replace the former Mertz Ford garage. A demolition permit has been issued to NAI Desco a commercial real estate firm from St. Louis who is the current developer of the retail project, to tear down the 100 year old plus former Ford salesroom and garage. The McDonald’s will be the anchor for a small retail center. Retail space will be available for rent at $16.00 per square foot according to the current plans on the NAI Desco web site. If you are at the corner of Washington and Jefferson with some cash in your possession, you will have the options of filling your car with gas, saving or withdrawing money from the bank, or putting a smile on someone’s face with a happy meal purchase.

Instructions for “Fresh” Meals We hope you enjoy these fresh tasting meals. Our Meals on Wheels are specially prepared to be fresh, safe, and nutritionally balanced for you. The meals provide 1/3 of your daily nutritional needs. The meal is kept warm until delivered to your door, so you don’t have to eat it immediately. You may place the meal in the refrigerator and eat it when it is convenient for you. Please follow directions for reheating in a microwave oven or in your regular conventional oven. Additional foods, such as bread or roll, fruit, dessert and milk, do not need to be reheated and come in a separate package. The label includes the packaging date.

INSTRUCTIONS • REFRIGERATE the fresh meal as soon as it arrives, unless you plan to eat it immediately. • When HEATING, vent the plastic sections with a fork or pull back the corner of each food section to vent. CAUTION! Steam will be HOT! - To heat in a MICROWAVE: Heat the meal for 2-3 minutes on high or until the food reaches 165 degrees. (Begin with two minutes and increase the time if needed.) - To heat in a CONVENTIONAL OVEN: Place the meal on a cookie sheet in the middle of the oven. Heat at 350 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes. This is the time when you can make changes to your Part D plan or Medicare Advantage plan or you can enroll if you missed your enrollment time when you were first eligible. Below are the changes that a Medicare beneficiary can make during OEP (open enrollment period): • Enroll in a new Part D Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. • Change from one Part D Medicare Prescription Drug Plan to a new Part D Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. • Enroll in a Part C Medicare Advantage Plan with Prescription Drugs • Change from one Part C Medicare Advantage Plan to a new Part C Medicare Advantage Plan. • Return to Original Medicare and purchase a Medicare Supplement and enroll in a Part D Medicare Prescription Drug Plan. • Return to Original Medicare only and enroll in a Part D Medicare Prescription Drug Plan • Or Return to Original Medicare with no Part D plan. Don’t forget there is a penalty for not enrolling in a Part D Medicare Prescription Drug plan when first eligible. For those who already have either a Part C Medicare Advantage plan with or without prescription drugs or a standalone Part D Medicare Prescription Drug plan, Medicare’s Open Enrollment is the time to make sure your drug plan or Medicare Advantage plan you are currently on or thinking of enrolling in still meets your needs, especially if you had any changes to your health. Many families who currently live in Millstadt and the surrounding area can trace their ancestry to Gross-Bieberau, Wersau, and surrounding villages in the Odenwald which is a beautiful region of farms, hills and woodlands in the State of Hessen, Germany. While Americans are doing genealogy research looking back to the Old World for family roots, many Germans are also interested in learning what happened to their countrymen who immigrated to the United States. Immigrants from Wersau who settled in Millstadt include the family names Harres {Harras}, Herbert, Oldendorph {Oldendorf}, Schaefer {Schäfer} and Seibert. In honor of the 700th anniversary of the Village of Wersau (located near Millstadt's Sister City, Gross-Bieberau), the Village of Millstadt and Millstadt Sister Cities Organization sent a congratulatory letter which is currently the first item on the Wersau 700 Jahre website: http://www.700-jahre-wersau.de/en/# In appreciation of the friendship and respect shown by Millstadt in honor of their 700th anniversary, the Wersau 700 Committee gave a stained glass image of the official Wersau coat of arms which was presented by Millstadt Sister Cities' President Glenn Logan and Board Members to Mayor Michael Todd and the Village of Millstadt at the Village Board meeting on November 3, 2014.

Armin Louis Speichinger Dies Armin Louis Speichinger, 91, of Millstadt, Ill., born,

November 10, 1923 in Millstadt, Ill., passed away on Thursday, November 27, 2014 at St. Paul’s Home in Belleville, Ill. Armin retired from Illinois Bell Telephone Company as a repair dispatcher after 33 years. He was a

member of St. Paul United Church of Christ in Floraville, Ill., member and past secretary at Columbia Masonic Blue Lodge 474 AF & AM, Ainad Shrine, Drum & Bugle Corps for 16 years, Royal order of Jesters Court #86, Rob Morris Chapter 6 times past patron, Millstadt Volunteer Fire Department, Millstadt Commercial Club where he was the longest living member and honored as being one of the Grand Marshals at the 2014 Millstadt Homecoming Parade. Village of Millstadt board for 2 years when the Village Hall was built, Telephone Pioneers of America, Past President State Chapter #1, Millstadt VFW Post 7980, & President of the Belleville Shrine Club. He was also a United States Army Veteran during the Korean War. Armin was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Speichinger, nee Sliment and his parents, Edward L. & Gertrude I., nee Eckert, Speichinger. Armin is survived by his son, Michael Speichinger, his daughters, Carol Speichinger & Linda Speichinger, he is also survived by other relatives and friends.

Robert Harold Glass Dies Robert Harold Glass, 74, of Millstadt, Ill., born, Oct. 7,

1940, in Kuttawa, Ky., died Friday, Nov. 21, 2014, at Relais Bonne Eau in Edwardsville, Ill. Robert worked for A.E. Lottes as a parts delivery man. He was a member of Zion Evangelical Church in Millstadt, Ill., and

the Millstadt Commercial Club where he ran the poker stand for 33 years at the picnics. Robert was also a United States Army veteran. Robert was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Amos and Lucy, nee Waters, Glass; his son-in-law, Floyd Poelker; and his sister, Sue Carol Reeder. Marge Wolfmeier recently decided to have her head shaved for a good cause. The Millstadt Community School challenged the teachers and kids to raise $1500 for the American Cancer Society during Red Ribbon Week. Marge Wolfmeier, Bryan Weaver and Matt Belosi all school staff and local residents agreed to shave their heads if the goal was achieved. They were really surprised when more than $5,000 was raised. Marge Wolfmeier, an American Cancer volunteer and leader of local Blood Drives fought colon cancer in 2007 she never lost her hair but decided to have her head shaved for a good cause. Students Abby Ready and Cole Harris both childhood cancer survivors had the privilege of doing the cutting honors.

Mary Hallenkamp APN We all know that prescription medications sometime have significant side effects and those side effects often

make us wary of taking them. But do we have the same concerns about the over the counter meds and supplements? Cold meds are a prime example. Many contain multiple ingredients that can

cause dizziness, drowsiness, or cause problems with blood pressure and your heart. Pain meds may cause stomach problems or kidney and liver dysfunction. “stomach” meds can be very effective, but make sure your doctor knows you’re taking them; they also can interfere with prescription drugs. Taking vitamins and supplements seems like a safe thing but they also may not mix well with other meds. Be sure to tell your doctor what you take. Be careful taking supplements that promise weight loss, energy, muscle rebuilding or anything that sounds too good to believe’ usually it is. Over the counter products should be taken with just as much caution as prescription medicines. Many of them can help you feel better; just make sure they do not hurt

Kathryn Elizabeth Hascall was born on Nov. 8, 1917, and passed away on Nov. 8, 2014. Kathryn was born in Monroe, Neb., and lived most of her life in Millstadt, Ill. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Her last years were spent at The Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows.

She was a member of Zion Evangelical Church in Millstadt, Ill.

Fall Season 2014 Results

Cattle, shepherds, and kings knew (maybe a drummer boy, too). Mankind would know. Who knew me? Few. Who knew Him? Creation! Humankind would watch, listen and perceive as He progressed through the rites of passage by which humankind professed to KNOW a person. There was one difference. The obituary wasn’t !!!! This was the beginning! Enlivening!

WHO KNEW ME? There I was? New! They looked to see-if boy or girl, if all parts present, if everything worked, if……No refunds.

No returns. You’ve got her; name her. That’s having a baby (Except nowadays they often know the sex, the working parts, and have a name ready for the shower.) My

brother wrote from Africa that he read about the birth in a month old newspaper but thought the family on 158 had a baby; then, “It should have been a boy!” It took years to know me. Colicky. Crying. Clingy. Stubborn. Pushy. Talkative (too much per Miss Hoffman). Daddy’s girl. Etc., etc., etc. Now? Encounters with friends from years past mean getting to “know” each other once again. We only really know a part of the person such as a child, a schoolmate, a band member, a cousin, a parent, a spouse, a nurse, a pantry volunteer, a boss. We know only a part, a snippet, of the whole and keeping catching-up reacquainting. As the years pass, expectations about a person build upon the premise of that “part”. Eventually, the person is summed up - usually in an obituary. Right now, it’s time to celebrate the Advent/Christmas season. Who knew about the baby Mary awaited? Gabriel knew. Elizabeth knew. Joseph knew. And, on that birth date angels harkened his birth (even Herald).

Services Available Meals on Wheels One of the Center’s most important programs, the Meals on Wheels program provides daily meals to people who have difficulty getting out of the house and/or cooking for themselves. Not only are we able to supply necessary food, but the driver delivering the meal is able to ascertain how the client is getting along and share some companionship. We have a number of folks dedicated to providing these services. They give freely of their time and energy to deliver the meals, make contact with the recipient and report back to the Center. The majority of the “regular” drivers volunteer one day per week and most have said it is highly rewarding for them.

Lunch Program Lunch is served Monday through Friday at 12 noon. You must be 60 years of age or older to qualify for this program. It is appreciated that if you want lunch you call the center by 3:00 pm in order to sign up for lunch on the following day. When you come in you may sign yourself up for the next day. If you like, you may sign up for the entire week or month. If you know that you can not make it and you have signed up, please call and let us know that you will not be here and tell us when you will be back for lunch. If you have any questions concerning the lunch program please contact Patty Evansco at 476-3731.

Bible Study At Senior Center An informal Bible study will be offered at the
