What is Circle K?

SERVICE Service, the first and arguably most integral

part of our Circle K tenets, is in the hearts of

each and every Circle K member.

Our service partners include UNICEF,

Students Team Up to Fight Hunger (STUFH),

March of Dimes, and the Eliminate Project.

In the local chapter at the University of

Wisconsin, Circle K organizes fundraisers to

benefit these service partners, as well as

performing hundreds of community service

hours in the Madison area.

LEADERSHIP Circle K provides a bounty of leadership

opportunities on the club, district and even

international levels! Every CKI member has the

opportunity to serve the club as an officer,

committee chairman, project chairman, district

officer, or international representative.

Opportunities range from Club President to

Social Chair to Webmaster and everything in

between. (For descriptions of board and chair

positions check out page 7!)

FELLOWSHIP Whether it is tutoring a child, networking with

business professionals or bonding with club

members during a social, Circle K provides

plenty of opportunities for meeting new people

and building strong relationships.

The people I've met through Circle K make all the hard work

more than worthwhile. There's something about giving up

your time to serve others that helps to form friendships that

are stronger than any others.

At UW-Madison, our club brings

two years we have performed over

3,000 hours of service and have

raised almost $5,000 for various

charities!

Adult Role Models in Science ARMS is a partnership program managed by the UW–Madison Institute for Biology Education with the goal of enhancing science education in elementary and middle schools. It was started in 1990 by Lyle Hill and Bob Heideman as a partnership between the Center for Biology Education and the Kiwanis Club of Downtown Madison. We work with the kids at the Mt. Zion Baptist Church afterschool program. Each week we alternate between tutoring and doing a science demo or project with the kids. We’ve done everything from constructing penny rafts to making the infamous Dr. Seuss “Oobleck”!

River Food Pantry

“Madison has a river—one flowing with food, faith, and friendship.”

Madison’s River Food Pantry is a nonprofit, volunteer driven community that provides hot meals, groceries, clothing and household items to families struggling to make ends meet in Dane County. For every dollar donated, 99 cents goes toward food and services. No one who goes to The River goes away hungry! Working at The River, there is a volunteer spot for everyone! Volunteers can help serve meals, ration food, direct families and even watch the kids while their parents shop. It’s a great organization and a fun service project to get involved with!

Dog Walking This past year we kicked off our partnership with both the local Madison Pet Smart as well as Shelter from the Storm – an all-breed dog and cat rescue that serves the greater Madison area. As part of this partnership, we helped exercise dogs as well as socializing them with potential adopters. This opportunity quickly rose to be a popular club favorite with many of our members coming away with a few new furry friends!

B1G Ten Food Fight This past year, UW-Madison Circle K launched our Second Annual “B1G Ten Food Fight”. The event brought together other Big Ten schools such as Michigan, Indiana and Ohio State in a week-long food drive. Each school paired with a local food bank or charity to which the food would be donated. While coming into this year as the reigning champs with over 1,000 pounds of food collected the first year, Penn State rallied and came out on top in 2012. We are looking to take back the crown and once again show the rest of the Big Ten why Wisconsin is so great! All of the donations went to benefit the Second Harvest Food bank of Southern Wisconsin. Second Harvest is a nonprofit organization dedicated to ending hunger in southwestern Wisconsin through community partnerships, serving nearly 141,000 people annually.

March of Dimes Every day 1 in 8 babies born in the U.S. arrive too soon. Circle K members help by raising funds annually for March of Dimes programs to help prevent prematurity. The March of Dimes currently focuses on raising awareness of prematurity and reducing the rate of premature births. As a club we have helped serve this service partner by collecting money and by participating in the annual March for Babies. Shake, Rattle and Roll Circle K rolled out the red carpet for their Second Annual Shake, Rattle and Roll benefit night for March of Dimes. The event showcased the talents of many prominent acapella and dance groups on campus. Those included in the performance were Fundamentally Sound, Hypnotiq, Surma and the renowned UW Madhatters! The event was a huge success and all proceeds went towards the March of Babies Charity Walk.

Service Chairs Our service chairs work feverishly to organize and brainstorm possible volunteer opportunities for the club. They are always looking to incorporate new options based on club interests.

Fundraising Chairs As fundraising chairs, these members work to organize, plan and develop fundraising activities to help raise money for both our service partners as well as for our club itself.

Madhu Rajendran Junior: Biochemistry and Mathematics “My favorite volunteer activity was volunteering at the River Food Pantry. They offer a wide variety of volunteering opportunities ranging anywhere from serving meals to monitoring the children's area. We usually pick serving food. While serving food not only do I get to do service, also I get to meet new people who also take pleasure in serving!”
