Innovation UpdatesThis “sounding-board” approach will help align creative thinking with market realities. Organizations that offer Peer Groups and mentoring opportunities, such as the Newmarket Chamber, are geared to provide this kind of support.
Like a well-balanced portfolio, innovation can be diversified for a small organization: small, incremental changes can be balanced with larger ones, and planting the seeds for radical innovation. It takes commitment, courage, and capability to be able to confidently navigate a world of exponential change. Those leaders who choose to pursue an innovation strategy have a stronger foundation from which to lead disruption in their sector, or to more effectively manage external disruptive dynamics.
For more reading on the concepts of Disruption, Innovation and Abundance, check out abundancehub.com
New Funding Program for Young Entrepreneurs (18-29 years old): OCE SmartStart Fund
The Ontario Centres of Excellence has launched a new funding program for technology or innovation based startup companies, led by an entrepreneur 18-29 years old. The program will provide eligible applicants with funding of up to $35,000 per start up to launch and grow their business. It includes: $30,000 in seed financing (1:1 matching), $5,000 in entrepreneurship skills training and professional support services and access to regional business and investment networks.
For more information on the OCE Smart Start Fund, visit www.oce-ontario.org/getting-started/entrepreneurs-startups
The Innovation Imperative: Disrupt, or Be Disrupted
Peter Diamandis, famous for creating the X-Prize for commercial space flight, often speaks about the exponential pace of change and fundamental shifts in business markets, technologies and processes – a new reality that organizations of all sizes are facing. His stark observation is that for any business, you must disrupt or be disrupted. While that sentiment can seem threatening, his premise that is the exponential change dynamic is creating an abundance of opportunities for businesses that are willing to pursue them.
And that opens a discussion of how companies navigate disruptions, ensuring not only survivability but a thriving, growing business. Forbes magazine in 2013 identified that where the external environment is driving disruptive changes, a key strategy for companies is to change the game internally; essentially, this requires “accelerating the speed of execution, as well as your agility to recognize opportunities”.
Most small businesses are really focused on day-to-day priorities, with little time to address changing market dynamics. Change also carries risks, whether ensuring that new products/services are accepted by the market, creating uncertainty with an organization’s staff, and whether or not a new direction will ultimately be successful. Often times, the challenges associated with disruption and change result in an organization not being able to adapt to significant market changes quickly enough.
One approach for small businesses to consider in managing innovation and change, is to build a network of individuals who can help “think through” next steps, prioritizing the strategies and activities. This network could include key personnel, trusted members of an industry or sector association, or local community members, but they should all be aware of the innovation imperative and focused on finding solutions to it.

Looking Back
The awards were formerly known as the “Past Presidents” & “Hall of Distinction” Business Excellence Awards and receptions were have been held in the Great Hall at Pickering College, Glenway Country Club, Cardinal Golf Club and now at our current venue The Manor at Carrying Place Golf & Country Club. Over the years a variety of businesses have been nominated and recognized for excellence, some on more than one occasion, for different categories; Allied Global Holdings, Mars, Microcel Corporation, & Viex Inc. Looking back, many interesting things have happened, such as the year a fire alarm was pulled at
Pickering College and the building was evacuated until the Fire Department gave the all clear.
Over time the award categories have changed several times. One of the
most interesting categories was the “Founders Award” which honoured the founding fathers/mothers of the Newmarket business community, the people without whose hard work and dedication (often given over a lifetime of achievement) Newmarket would not be the commercial centre it is today. Did you know that one of our past winners was Robert Simpson who was a town merchant? He opened a small store at the North West corner of Main and Timothy called Simpson & Trent Groceries, Boots, Shoes & Dry Goods. In later years the name was changed to Robert Simpson Co. and he moved the store to Queen St. Toronto.
25th Anniversary Celebration
This year’s event is a major milestone and we are extremely excited to have added an “After Party” with dessert stations, DJ and dancing to celebrate. We hope you will join us for the celebration.

Business Excellence AwardsNewmarket Chamber of Commerce Celebrates 25 Years of Business Excellence
The Newmarket Business Excellence Awards were launched to celebrate excellence in business 25 years ago. As we observe the 25th year of the awards, the award recipients and nominees continue to provide an ongoing source of inspiration and pride in the Newmarket business community.
Past winners have told us:
“I was humbled just to be nominated and even more so to win among such outstanding competition.”
“I find the Newmarket Chamber very progressive for not just being about the bottom line. They included giving back in their criteria.”
“I wanted to take a shot at starting a company of my own from scratch. I said ‘If I don’t, I’ll never know’.”
