Joshua 24 gives us a lists of people that came against Israel and God saw them through to vic-
tory:
Amorites, Moabites, Perizzites, Canaanites, Hites, Girgashites, Hivites, and Jebusites
Each of these names to the Israelites represents a place where blood was shed, hardships
were had and were ba le was hard. These names to us may have simply become names on a
map but to an Israelite soldier they represented so much more than just a name or a dot on a
map. At the end of the day they represented an obstacle that was overcome, as was said in
Joshua 23:3 You yourselves have seen everything the LORD your God has done to all these na-
ons for your sake; it was the LORD your God who fought for you.
While these ci&es each represent a different challenge or obstacle, we could name our ci&es
as well. Our map of life obstacle has different names beside the dots though. Our city names
might be replaced by words like grief, financial ruin, secret sins, family problems, illness,
doubt, insecuri&es or depression. These are words that to the one who is currently figh&ng
that ba le is much more than just a name in a list of obstacles. Ba les are real, ba les are
scary and ba les are never easy. But there is hope. In the same way that God carried the Isra-
elites through he promises to carry us through as well.
Isaiah 41:10-13 (NIV)
10 So do not fear, for I am with you;
do not be dismayed, for I am your God.
I will strengthen you and help you;
I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.
11 “All who rage against you
will surely be ashamed and disgraced;
those who oppose you
will be as nothing and perish. 12
Though you search for your enemies,
you will not find them.
Those who wage war against you
will be as nothing at all. 13
For I am the Lord your God
who takes hold of your right hand
and says to you, Do not fear;
I will help you.
How great it is to know that the Lord loves so much and so strongly that whatever the ba le
we fight, one day, because of him we will no longer be able to find it, he will have destroyed
it.
James 1:12 (NIV)12
Blessed is the one who perseveres under trial because, having stood the
test, that person will receive the crown of life that the Lord has promised to those who love
him.
And so un&l the victory is one, keep figh&ng the ba les, keep relying on God and keep your
focus on him and not your enemies.

A Favorite Subject of Mine
Prayer is one of my favorite subjects and there is
no be er place to begin than the Word of God. I share a
few verses from that Word.
− “The priests and the Levites stood to bless the people
and God heard them for their prayers reached heaven,
His holy dwelling place.” 2 Chronicles 30:27
− “Hear my prayer, O Lord; listen to my cry for mercy. In
the day of my trouble I will call to you, for you will an-
swer me.” Psalm 86:6-7
− “The Lord detests the sacrifice of the wicked, but the
prayer of the upright pleases Him.” Proverbs 15:8
− “Therefore I tell you, whatever you ask for in prayer
believe that you will receive it, and it will be yours.”
Mark 11:24
− “Do not be anxious about anything but in everything
by prayer and pe&&on with thanksgiving, present your
requests to God. And the peace of God which trans-
cends all understanding will guard your hearts and
your minds in Christ Jesus.” Philippians 4:6-7
− “For the eyes of the Lord are on the righteous and his
ears are a en&ve to their prayers but the face of the
Lord is against those who do evil.” I Peter 3:12
How wonderful are these truths from God’s holy
Word? Read and reread them. Cut them out of this bulle-
&n and put them in a special place like in your Bible. Pray
oFen. I highly recommend it! Walter
