Session IMIDWEST CONFERENCE 2016

BLUEPRINTS FOR SUCCESS

Welcome!Thank you for joining us in Minneapolis for the 2016 MIDWest ACAC Conference! On behalf of the boards of each affiliate, I would like to extend you a warm welcome to Minneapolis. Whether you traveled from near or far, this is your first ACAC conference or you are a veteran of many, we are all here to learn, share, and build upon our own “Blueprints for Success.” Blueprints, by definition, speak to frameworks, collaboration, and well thought out plans from which successful endeavors are made possible. We are all here because we are drawn to the importance of college access and postsecondary options. We have a desire to advocate for policies and programs that benefit our profession and the students and families we serve. In order to continue to build upon the great foundation of past leaders there is a need to continue to modify our blueprints so that they align with the ever-changing landscape of 21st century education. Our schools, institutions, and organizations are changing – so too must we change ourselves and our profession to align with the needs our students will have in the future. I hope you will actively network throughout this conference, taking an opportunity to create connections with new people while rekindling existing relationships. A dynamic host of sessions lies in front of you that will allow you to dialogue, share ideas, and advance in your own professional development. I am excited to have Kent Rinehart, NACAC Board Director, here to offer perspective on how NACAC supports our work at the national level. Our keynote speaker, Phil Gwoke, known as “the Motivator,” is skilled in improving inter-generational communication and collaboration. Take advantage of time with our sponsoring business partners during the conference to learn more about their beneficial programs, products and services that may advance the work you do. This conference is made possible by the collaborative efforts of the conference committee made up of talented and hardworking individuals from each of our great states. Please take a moment to thank the members of the committee as you encounter them throughout the conference. Thank you, and again, welcome to Minneapolis. Enjoy the conference! Norma Gutierrez – President, Minnesota ACACDirector of College Counseling, Saint Thomas Academy

CONFERENCE THEME:Grab your hard hat and let’s get to work! The theme for the 2016 MIDWest ACAC Conference is “Blueprints for Success.” The MIDWest ACAC Conference is symbolic for what it means to be a part of higher education: relationship, association, alliance, teamwork. Regardless of which description you prefer, to build something that is effective, strong, and sustainable, all players need to have input into the blueprint for successful execution. Inspired by “construction season” in downtown Minneapolis, with the new US Bank Stadium, hotel renovations for Super Bowl LII, and the expansion of Mall of America, we’ve designed an opportunity to share ideas, connect with colleagues and fully engage. Take this opportunity to truly develop as an individual, as well as a professional, so we can continue to engineer successful student outcomes and the advancement of higher education.

Birch/MapleSearch vs. Search: The Great Debate of 2016Student Search and Search Engine Marketing have historically sat in two very different arenas. But it’s 2016, and these two types of Search now have a “chicken or the egg” dynamic in your enrollment marketing strategy. How do you appear when prospective students are searching online as a result of both you and your competitors’ Student Search efforts? What type of presence do you have for online searchers that weren’t part of your Student Search strategy? In this session, we’ll review all of the synergies between Student Search and Search Engine Marketing (SEO and PPC). And you’ll walk away with some tests and audits you can do for your own institution to ensure you’re set up for success in both. The definition of “Search” for higher education is evolving. Are you ready?

Ballroom 4M-I-C-K-E-Y M-O-U-S-E and the Magical Experience: A Unique Take on Customer ServiceThere are lots of reasons people break up with companies. Broken promises, a product doesn’t meet the customer’s expectations, and even changing customer needs. What does Mickey Mouse have to do with higher education? Knowledge, passion, friendliness and fabulous customer service can create precious memories from the moment a student passes through your college campus or starts their college search. Three elements exist at colleges and universities which include the cast, setting and process. These dimensions make a critical impression on students, prospective students, parents, alumni, job candidates and others in contact with your institution. This session will lend some advice to applying some customer service lessons to our institutions, even if we don’t offer Magic Toad Rides or Mickey Mouse Parades.

St. Croix IHow to put the Fruitopia into your Customer Service! This interactive session will allow attendees to reflect on the best and worst customer service experiences they’ve had! With humor, self-reflection, and some acting chops; we’ll learn about four styles of customer service. Do you want the Freezer (brrr, its cold in here), the Factory (next in line!), the Friendly Zoo (what a ZOO!), or Fruitopia (Utopia with a little fru-fru)?

Admission counseling is full of people who perform amazing customer service every day. Let’s remember why customer service is important in our personal lives, in our professional roles, and also to our office or department as a whole.

This customer service philosophy has proven to be a great training model for student staff as well as counselors. Join us and think intentionally about how to create a more Fruitopian customer service experience for students and families.

Pine/CedarThe Sophomore SlumpSo you’ve made it past your first year, congratulations! You’re not new in the office anymore — thank goodness! — but you haven’t quite found yourself either. So what happens now? Many counselors in years two through five are unsure of what to do to advance their careers; enter the sophomore slump! The slump can cause you to become confused about your career goals, lose motivation, and feel disconnected from office life. So many times we have seen this cause great admission counselors to leave the profession—We don’t want that to happen to you!

This session will provide helpful tips and insight on how to break through the sophomore slump and achieve success in the office. By following our tips closely you can learn how to transition from a first-year counselor to middle manager, end your sophomore slump, and find yourself a seat at the big kids table.

Session V - Session VI

St. Croix II*Promoting College Access and Student Success with Micro-scholarshipsColleges award billions of dollars in scholarships each year, most of which is awarded at the end of a student’s high school career. Research suggests this timing is often too late to impact students’ college aspirations, application decisions, and post-secondary outcomes. Join us as we discuss initiatives that are shifting this paradigm to the benefit of students, high school educators, and colleges alike.

Raise.me, an innovative program supported by the Gates Foundation, helps students earn aid (“micro-scholarships”) for college starting in 9th grade based on their individual achievements throughout high school. Over 150 colleges (including University of Iowa, Drake, UM-Twin Cities, UM-Duluth, Gustavus Adolphus, and Lawrence) are awarding micro-scholarships to promote college readiness and play a positive role in students’ development. Educators at over 16,000 high schools use Raise.me as a tool to motivate students and build a college-going culture.

We will discuss how earlier access to financial aid influences college preparation and persistence. College representatives will learn how Raise.me can help grow their pool of college-ready low-income students, and ultimately hit their enrollment goals. High school counselors will hear how their peers are creating a college-going culture and the success they are having with tools like Raise.me.

Pine/Cedar*Straight Talk on Counselor RecommendationsCounselor recommendations are an annual stressor for school counselors, all the more in the Upper Midwest where high counselor-to-student ratios are the norm. What do colleges – no matter their selectivity – expect to learn from your Secondary School Report and Written Evaluation? We invite school counselors, both new and veteran, to bring your curiosity and best practice suggestions to this panel that includes both writers and readers of counselor recommendations.

Deer/ElkData-Driven Relationship BuildingAn admission counselor’s responsibilities can vary across institutions, but a commonality of all admission counselors includes the importance of establishing and maintaining relationships with prospective students and their families. When you are responsible for recruitment in a large territory or state, it can sometimes be difficult to target or narrow your focus specific students. Join us to learn how North Dakota State University manages their recruitment territories through data-driven decision making in an effort to reach a desirable student-to-institution fit. Attendees will be invited to share their ideas and suggestions as well.

Crystal Lake*Summer Nudging: Combating Summer Melt in MinnesotaSummer melt is the phenomenon where students accepted into an institution of higher education fail to successfully matriculate in the fall. This is a problem in Minnesota and across the United States. Nationally, it affects 1 in 5 college bound students. Researchers have been developing assessments of this phenomenon in order to help mitigate summer melt and the achievement gap. This is done through gentle “nudges” in the form of text messages or e-mails. With eleven to fifteen texts going out between early June and late August, this is a cost effective and productive way to work with students who need help getting to college.
