Helping local volunteers to make sense of some of the available tools at their disposal to gather an audience for their Festival and Events. This introductory presentation assumes no prior knowledge of Facebook, beyond possibly using Facebook personally. This presentation was updated in mid-April 2013 to reflect the changes to the layout of the personal profile made by Facebook.

HOW BIG IS FACEBOOK? One billion monthly active users as of October 2012  Approximately 81% of monthly active users are outside the U.S. and Canada. 584 million daily active users on average in September 2012.  488 million monthly active users who used Facebook mobile products in

March 2012, and more than 500 million mobile monthly active users as of April 20, 2012. 604 million monthly active users who used Facebook mobile products as of September 30, 2012

During March 2012, on average 398 million users were active with Facebook on at least six out of the last seven days.

More than 125 billion friend connections on Facebook at the end of March 2012.

On average more than 300 million photos uploaded to Facebook per day in the three months ended March 31, 2012. 

An average of 3.2 billion Likes and Comments generated by Facebook users per day during the first quarter of 2012.

More than 42 million Pages with ten or more Likes at the end of March 2012.  Facebook is available in more than 70 languages.

Tagging Mentioning a friend or another page in a post or

photo by adding their name/page name to your post. Accessed by adding the @ sign before their name, or by typing their name and allowing FB to bring up the relevant person/page

Mentioning other pages creates a post on their wall – so be wary of too many which might be regarded by the other page as ‘spamming’
