Principal’s MessageThank you to all the parents and carers who attended Parent/Teacher Nights over the past two weeks. It was great to see so many in attendance gaining valuable feedback about their child’s progress.

Overall, the feedback from parents in regard to our new phone policy has been extremely positive. We thank you for your support and appreciate your ongoing efforts in working with your child as the school implements the policy next term.

This week I had the pleasure of attending the Fair Education Conference where there were many outstanding presentations and workshops. In particular, the sessions presented by Professor Michael Anderson and Miranda Jefferson, the co-authors of ‘Transforming Schools’ were extremely informative and thought provoking. Fair Education supported Dubbo College in the implementation of the AVID program across all year groups.

Congratulations to our CAPA team on their entertaining and captivating Creative and Performing Arts Night last night. The students did an outstanding job and were supported by the attendance of many staff, parents and families.

Next week Ms Renee Tink will commence as Assistant Principal at Mian School until the end of the year. We wish her all the very best and extend a warm welcome to Mr Adam Romanowski who will be joining our executive team in the role of Head Teacher Teaching and Learning for the remainder of 2019.

Next week, South Campus Executive will be participating in a planning evening to focus on the 2020 curriculum, the School Plan and the final stages of the YONDR implementation. We are also looking forward to celebrating NAIDOC Day next Friday, this will be followed by a Yarn UP at 2.30pm. In regard to a permanent identified Aboriginal SLSO position that will be advertised shortly. We look forward to seeing you there.

YEAR 7 creating Healthy Food Habits

Congratulations to all the winners of the major prize draws at the PBL Assembly. Four lucky students from each year received either a $50.00 Cotton On or Readings Cinema voucher in acknowledgement of their positive behaviour. The CARES COUPON box was full to the brim

and it’s great to see so many students earning these acknowledgements in their classes every day.

The Fortnightly Focus for weeks 7 and 8 has been “Let Others Learn”. Students have been encouraged to think about the impact of disruptive behaviour on their peers and the detrimental effect distractions have upon the quality of teaching and learning in the classroom. The core business of classrooms is teaching and learning. Students have been reminded to respect others and strive towards the creation of a quality classroom environment reflecting a focus on effort and achievement.

Upcoming Acknowledgement Activities include the CARES COUPON CANTEEN on Wednesday 25 September followed by an afternoon at the movies for deserving students on Thursday 26 September. Students are urged to keep up the positive behaviour to earn the CARES COUPONS necessary for redeeming these acknowledgements.

Always remember that South CARES!PBL Team

In Week 6, Ms Smith’s and Mr Ellen’s Support classes travelled to the Wambangalang Environmental Education Centre for an excursion. The trip supported a scope of work in Science that had investigated original and altered eco-systems, with a particular focus on western New South Wales.

At Wambangalang, the students looked at the Box Gum Woodland that has been preserved in this small area and made comparisons between the management practices of the traditional owners prior to colonisation and how this land management and usage had radically changed in the last 200 years. In particular, the students

saw first-hand, the stress that the natural environment was currently experiencing under drought conditions. The students also had the chance to sample some ‘Bush Tucker,’ which was not to everyone’s taste.

It was not all work, and the students participated in two wonderful team building sessions. It was particularly exciting to see 100% participation with some students revealing excellent skills to persevere and take measured risks that are not always evident in the classroom. The Low-Ropes course after lunch was the highlight of the day and this is where the spirit of collaboration was most on show.

As always, the presence of a Flying Fox proved popular, with the ‘shriek meter’ reaching its full potential.

Many thanks also to Lillian Lamb and Maree Louis, our wonderful SLSO’s and the fabulous Dave Houghton from Wambangalang who was our expert teacher, all for whom this marvellous day could not have gone ahead and been such a success.

Tamworth Sports DayGirls Academy staff and ten students travelled to Tamworth on Wednesday to play in the 9’s

Football Tamworth Sports Day. We travelled with girls from our Delroy Girls Academy to compete against football teams in the Tamworth region.

Contact timeThis term our year 7 and 8 girls have been involved in the ‘Super Girls’ program with Lisa Weber. The program is all about learning about self-esteem, body image and empowerment.

Our year 9 and 10 girls are enjoying the ‘Quit B Fit’ program with WACHS as well as working on our latest project of re-establishing the Girls Academy garden.

Girls Academy Sports DayLast Thursday 29 August our girls participated in the Girls Academy sports day which was held at Delroy Campus. We played league tag, netball and basketball against four other Girls Academies in the region.

The five Academies all had a chance to get to know each other with a stay over at Charles Sturt University with organised activities planned for the evening. Well done to the girls who participated and thank you for a great couple of days.

“Books – the original handheld device”

Throughout the term, students have watched the Library space evolve. We are making room for more collaborative activities, rejuvenating the reading spaces and encouraging students to interact with each other without computers or phones.Thank you to the students who have continued to use the Library on ‘Tech-Free’ Tuesdays and Thursdays. On Tuesday, paper plane design was the focus (thank you Haiden). There were some very innovative designs and one plane that could do loops before landing. New titles this month include: The Last Balfour by Cait Duggan “An utterly riveting tale of magic, danger and witch hunts … that grips you by the throat and won’t let go.”The Unlisted by J. Flynn “They are inside your head.”This is How We Change the World by V. Wakefield “what it takes to fight back when you are not a hero.”Everywhere Everything Everyone by K. Warner “A single flame can spark a sea of fire.”

Monuments by W. Kostakis “They built the world, now we have the power to change it.”The Surprising Power of a Good Dumpling by W. Chim “For family, whatever form they may take.”

Suggestions for books, games and puzzles are always welcome.

NEWSLETTER TERM 3 WEEK 7 We recently have had contact sessions with our 2020 Year 6 male students at Dubbo South Primary School on Thursday of Week 7.

South Campus Clontarf have had a number of engagement mornings with the young men heading into Year 7 at South Campus in 2020. These sessions were to inform the students about Clontarf and how we work to support them. We engaged the students in activities we do on a regular basis. This has involved Johnny Cake making around a fire, an information session, ping pong competition and training sessions. The students enjoyed the full range of opportunities Clontarf can offer, including healthy “Clonny-style” lunch of chicken wraps before heading off back to school. We cannot wait to see the boys come next year!

Our dedicated students have represented our school and Clontarf by providing their cooking expertise at the recent Father’s Day Night Session at Bunnings. The students are to be congratulated in their service and the professional way in which they represented both our school and Clontarf. Thank you to Bunnings who have been a wonderful supporter of Clontarf. The Clontarf team would like to give a big “shout out” to Zayne McMillan and Ayden Mulheron. “THANK YOU’’ You have shown commitment not only to our school and Clontarf but also by giving back to the community.

Throughout the term Clontarf students have had early morning training sessions on Mondays where they have been running laps and drilling. As a reward for the hard work and commitment, we took the students to Sydney for the annual Manly Fun Run. This is a long distance run taking the runners along the beautiful Manly Beach, with some of our students volunteering to assist injured participants. It was an absolutely incredible day.

We would like to congratulate twenty of our students who have gained part-time employment with various companies in Dubbo and Wellington. The range of employment is extensive with some working in fast food outlets, mechanical work, supermarkets and much more. We encourage our students to work hard and realise that holding down a job gives them much more than monetary value.

Thank you to Mr Black for spending time with our Academy and enjoying some of our activities.

Thank you Ms Solomans for sharing your culinary skills with us on Tuesdays. Ms Solomons made Bacon Carbonara and passed on her professional tips and culinary secrets. At the end of the session we all grabbed a fork, a seat and enjoyed the wonderful meals she prepared. No doubt Ms Solomons’ Bacon Carbonara will feature on home menus for weeks to come. The students loved the dish and are still talking about it today.
