Adding adjectives Nouns
Nouns are often known as ‘naming words’ because they can name people, places
and things.
Girl = noun
Adjectives
Adjectives are ‘describing words’. They describe a noun.
terrible = adjective book = noun
The book he read on holiday was terrible
Adjectives can come before or after a noun.
He read a terrible book on holiday
Adjective or Noun ?

partner, stick together and discuss:

Adding adjectives
Simple noun phrase
Simple noun phrases are groups of words, including a noun, that make up part of a sentence.
The noun is the main word in the phrase and other words give information about it.

You add adjectives after the determiner to make an expanded noun phrase
This adds extra detail about the noun.
Determiners are placed before the noun to help to describe it.

Review
Consequence game! • Work in pairs using plain A4 paper.
• Player 1 draws the head of a monster, folds the paper and passes it to player 2.
• Player 2 draws the body, then passes it back to the Player 1.
• Player 1 draws the legs then passes it on.
Open up the paper to reveal your monster.
Firstly, identify the monster with a simple noun phrase ‘the monster’.
Then create sentences to describe the monster using expanded noun phrases. Write these underneath
your monster.
