St. Francis of Assisi Parish Presents:

WHY PRAYER MATTERS

Thursday, March 12 at 7:30 PM Father Sunny Castillo

Praying Twice and More: God’s Voice in Music and

Song Music and song are languages of the soul, where one can enter into a profound encounter with God. This presentation is about learning the spirituality of music and vocal renditions. Father Sunny is the Pastor of St. John Paul II Parish in Kankakee.

The Benedictine Sisters of the Sacred Heart will be holding a Lenten reflection on March 10 from 7-8:30– PM and March 14 from 9-10:30 AM. The presentations will be led by Sister Mary Bratrsovsky and will occur at

Sacred Heart Monastery in Lisle. Sister Mary will be using the video “Shua”, written and performed by Father William Burke. The audience will come to understand, through the eyes of a childhood friend—not a believer in Jesus as Messiah—who Jesus is and why He died. Sacred Heart Monastery is located at 1910 Maple Avenue in Lisle in the 2nd floor Monastery Chapter Room. (The statue of the Sacred Heart is locate in front of the monastery entrance.)

THE THREE BASIC LENTEN DISCIPLINES

FASTING: Expresses our desire to find happiness in God rather than in the satisfaction of our physical needs. The control we gain over our appetites helps us recognize more

deeply that all true and lasting pleasure comes from God. Knowing this we are freed to gratefully accept food and savor it, or to avoid or limit foods that we know are unhealthy for us. Through fasting, our relationship to ourselves is reoriented toward God.

ALMSGIVING: Provides assistance to the poor among us and helps us recognize God as the true source off our security. Property and wealth exercise less control over us hen we

give away or share our wealth out of love for God and for others. Almsgiving is a way of bringing our relationship to others into the orbit of Christ’s love.

PRAYER: Changes our relationship to God. Through prayer, we admit our need for a power that is greater than ourselves. We acknowledge our limitations and let go of the drive

to control everything. In the process, we open ourselves to all that God has to offer us.

St. Thomas the Apostle Church, Naperville “The Road to Jerusalem:

A Lenten Labyrinth Walk” Be part of a Lenten labyrinth walk at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, 1500 Brookdale Road in Naperville, on March 24 between 7-8:30 PM. We turn our eyes toward Jerusalem as we draw nearer to Holy Week. The labyrinth has been used since the Middle Ages as a “virtual pilgrimage,” a prayerful walk with Jesus as we reflect on his destiny and ours. A pilgrimage is a journey with a sacred purpose—take some time to seek your purpose, by walking the labyrinth this Lent.

If you know of someone in immediate need please have them contact our help line.

In the Gospel Jesus is transfigured and a voice from heaven said, “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased: Listen to Him.”

Do we listen to Jesus when he asks us to help our brothers and sisters when they are suffering? We so heartily thank you for in doing so through your gifts to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul we are able to carry on this work. By your generosity our collection last week amounted to $1979.09. This greatly enables us to continue our works in your name with faith and the inspiration of the Holy Spirit. God Bless You!

Please join the Legion of Mary every 2nd Monday of the month in a Holy Hour from 8-9 PM in the Church. Our Holy Hour consists of spending some quiet time in the presence of our Lord exposed on the altar, praying a rosary for our priests, religious, and for an increase in vocations; and concludes with Benediction. Our next Holy Hour will be Monday, March 9th. Won’t you please come and spend one hour with us and Jesus.

Cross of Wishes

During Lent, the staff of St. Andrew the Apostle is asking for your help in purchasing a few items on our “Wish List”. On the wall at the church entrance is a large cross with small purple crosses

on it. These are items of varying amounts that are needed and wished for by our staff. Take a cross and put your name and phone number on the back and return it with your donation in an envelope marked Cross of Wishes to the collection basket, the office, or to a staff member.

May our Lord continue to bless you for your kindness!

Be Kind and Merciful

2020 Catholic Ministries Appeal

We are pleased that so many parishioners have already pledged a gift to the 2020 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA). Your support will allow us to Be Kind and Merciful, as, together, we do God’s work here on earth. Every gift brings us closer to our parish’s 2020 CMAA goal of $67,500. If we raise more than our goal, 70% of the amount over goal will be returned to us for our needs. This is an amazing opportunity for our parish. Please prayerfully reflect on your pledge to this year’s CMAA and make your gift today. Pledge envelopes are available in the church. You can also return the pledge card you received in the mail from the diocese, make a gift online at jolietdioceseappeal.org or text “Donate” to (815) 205-1949 from your mobile phone.

any items to the school. You can contact the school office with any

questions at [email protected].

Do you wear shoes? Do you have family or friends that wear shoes?

Do you work with people that wear shoes? If you answered “yes” to any of those questions –

this is for you!

During March and April we will be collecting gently worn shoes to raise money for our school. Our goal is to collect 2500 shoes – and YOU can help! Check your closets, talk to your friends and family, talk to your co-workers! Bring your gently worn shoes to the school office during school hours-or drop them in front of the door in a bag.

SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA)

RCIA is a faith formation process for adult seekers, both unbaptized and baptized Christians and baptized Catholics, who seek to complete their initiation sacraments (Holy Communion and Confirmation). For more information, contact Barb Sanders at the Adult Faith Formation Office:

815-886-4165 X308 or [email protected]

BAPTISM OF CHILDREN We joyfully celebrate the Baptism of children on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m. The requirements are: to be registered in the parish and have an active participation in our parish community for at least 3 months. Register at the parish office for the Baptismal prep class, which is held on the first Wednesday of the month at 7:30 p.m., in the school hall. It is important to notify the parish office with the date that you will be attending the class.

FIRST COMMUNION AND CONFIRMATION

Please see page 9 in the bulletin for Faith Formation information regarding preparation for these important sacraments.

MARRIAGE REQUIREMENTS

Diocese requirements include a formal engagement preparation period of at least six months before the date of the weddings and attendance in a marriage preparation program. St. Andrew requires either the bride, groom, or parents of either to be registered as parishioners for at least three months before contacting us to set a date. There are a number of additional requirements. Please contact the Parish Office for additional information.

FUNERALS

Arrangements for a funeral are usually made through the Funeral Director at a funeral home of your choice.

PASTORAL CARE OF THE SICK

Hospitals do not inform churches when parishioners are patients. You should ask an immediate family member to contact the Parish Office to request a visit from a priest when sickness occurs or death is imminent. Please contact Barb Sanders to arrange for Communion to be brought to the sick at home, to a hospital, or nursing home.

I would like to have my house blessed.

Please contact me to make arrangements.
