RESPONDING T'O THE CAI,LDo we truly know the voice of Christ? Do we
truly respond to the voice of our shepherd with ourown distinctive voice? How often we attempt to imi-tate those around us,appropriating the re-sponse of anothermember of the flockto Christ. Perhaps weneed to balance theimage of being sheepof one flock with theimage from the second reading, which tells us thatwe are all children of God. What child has preciselythe same interaction with parents as his or her sib-lings? Instead, they frequently do and say things todistinguish themselves in the eyes of their parents.
Whether we use the image of children or ofsheep to understand our relationship with Christ, webelieve that we are all known and called by name.With this great gift comes a responsibility: to re-spond to the call with our own distinctive voice, totake time to discern exactly what our call is, to deter-mine precisely what the will of the Father is for eachOf US. coplrishr @ J. s. There are few openings for "Shepherds" inthe classified ads today, but few occupations are asdear to the Christian heart. Most of us tenderly placeshepherds by our Christmas cribs, name the Twenty-third Psalm as our favorite, and recognize "GoodShepherd" as a title ofJesus. Bishops carry astaff, called acrozier,modeled after the shep-herd's walking staff.Long before Christianartists painted Jesus onthe cross, they traced onthe walls of their worship places images of a strongyoung shepherd, shouldering a lost sheep and bring-ing it to safety. Springtime is the season of lambing,a time when the shepherd not only leams the faces ofthe new arrivals, but also when the newborn sheepbecome attuned to the voice of the shepherd. This isexactly what we do as a community in Easter as weshelter and guide the newly received Christians, andalso put our Lenten muscles to good use: listeningmore attentively to God's Word, and respondingwith springtime vigor to God's call.-Jmes Field, Copyright @ J. Constitucion Dogmatica "Lumen Gentium'o dice: Ob-jeto de fe es que la Iglesia, es indefectiblementesanta. Porque Cristo, el Hijo de Dios, a quien con elPadre y el Espiritullamamos "el soloSanto" am6 a la Iglesiacomo a su esposa, en-tregindose a Si mismopor ella para santifi-carla (cf. Eph.5,25-26),y la uni6 a Sicomo su propio cuerpoy la llen6 con la pleni-tud del Espiritu Santo,para gloria de Dios.Por eso todos en laIglesia, ya pertenezcan a la Jerarquia, ya sean dirigi-dos por ella, est6n llamados a la santidado segirnaquello del Ap6stol: Porque 6sta es la voluntad deDios, westra santifrcaci6n (l Thes. 4, 3; cf. Desde en-tonces la Iglesia nos llama y nos invita a orar porlas vocaciones. El orar y promover las vocacionesdeberfa ser diariamente. Pero en forma pafticulareste Domingo 29 de Abril (Cuarto Domingo dePascua) es dedicado a orar por las vocaciones.Cada afio el Papa nos da un mensaje por las voca-ciones. Para celebrar este afio El Papa BenedictoXVI escogi6 como tema: La vocaci6n don de lacaridad de Dios.
